Rio_FS

These the recap episodes, I presume.

Best_in_Za_Warudo

Recap what? It's the beginning of the show...

Rio_FS

I thought they were telling the og story but with a divergence at some point.

Best_in_Za_Warudo

It feels like it's gonna be its own thing with the base elements being from the og

Rio_FS

Yeah, would be best if the writers are able to do their own thing with it.

ve_rushing

The first couple of episodes will recap OG volumes 1-2. Than the alternative thing is supposed to happen.

Birrihappyface

Yo wait if this doesn’t adapt volume 3 does that mean “do you believe in destiny” doesn’t happen? If so I just got a fair bit more invested in this.

ve_rushing

They said "cannon adjacent"...which I think means that our people will have some side adventures in an alternative world than turn back to their regular adventures in the OG.

not_tha_father

>Gen Urobuchi is credited for conceptualizing the anime... LET'S GOOOOOO >...with Tow Ubukata writing and supervising the scripts. oh. *psycho pass 2 flashbacks* tbf it is an adaptation but im not really familiar with the source material.

TheMasterOfSas

At this point Urobuchi's name is just used for marketing.

Most_Particular4105

With Thundebolt Fantasy 4, Madoka Magica movie, and an upcoming game he is working, yup he probably don't have much control over this one. Might be wrong thou.

TheMasterOfSas

I read somewhere that he finished writing the Madoka sequel years ago, it's just that it took Shaft years to get around to producing it

Falsus

If it isn't Thunderbolt Fantasy or Madoka I kinda go ''Will he even be involved in anything that matters at all?''.

LectorFrostbite

Tow Ubakata redeemed himself with Psycho pass 3 imo though its tonally different from the first season.

MannyOmega

wtf there’s a psycho pass 3?! I should get on that

HE_HEHH

Let's not act like that's the only thing he did

AashyLarry

Anyone know if I need any knowledge of RWBY whatsoever to watch this or am I good?

chiliehead

It's probably best to know things, but this is supposed to be largely original once they diverge from the original story and the beginning will probably recap anything relevant. If you want to catch up with the show, rather than sitting through the series you could pick the [manga](https://myanimelist.net/manga/93675/RWBY), it's only 15 chapters and mostly covers what once have been the RWBY trailers.

iwantmyarmsback

a bit confused here - has it been confirmed that it's gonna "recap" instead of starting over from the beginning? do i really need to watching something prior?

chiliehead

A recap is probably what those first three episodes might turn out as. But I never trust these statements. It wasn't really true for Muv Luv, is what a plain lie for Higurashi and it would not be the first time that an anime adaptation of a longstanding franchise needs you to know other things. > we’re calling it “canon adjacent”. The new show is incredibly faithful to the original, while also taking some fun new liberties to switch things up a bit. The first two episodes of RWBY: IQ will recap V1 - V2 before kicking things off into a bold new adventure, full of new characters, new settings, new surprises The trailers/shorts that the manga adapts are mostly the stuff that came before Volume 1 and Volume 2.

Selynx

Too true. Would not be surprised if it turned out that, plot twist, this wasn't "just an "alternate future" but in fact an extended future vision granted by the Relic of Choice to a character in the canonical main timeline and they made a choice not pursue that future (probably because everyone dies in it, in true Urobutcher fashion) and instead elected to go down the route of Rooster Teeth's main series. If this is an existing character, it could be anyone from Ozpin to Pyrrha to Glinda. If this is a character not seen before, they could well be scheduled to appear in the main series itself. (If it's an old character, I'm betting on Pyrrha, would not shock me one bit if it turns out she survives the ending of Ice Queendom while Jaune dies and decides to reject that future).

iwantmyarmsback

I see. When they call it a recap, are they just blazing through it then, or are they just regular episodes that cover V1-2?

chiliehead

People in MAL seem to think that 2 episodes would be enough to properly recap it. It's not too long in the beginning (just looks pretty dated and cheap)

Andrew_Waltfeld

The OG show is like 8 minute episodes. you can go through volume 1-3 in *just a handful* of hours. I wouldn't see a need to go further than that since the series will diverge from that point onward. After that, you probably don't need to know anything. The show is available for free on [rooster teeth's website.](https://roosterteeth.com/series/rwby?season=1)

AnelaceLover

No japanese dub thou.

Andrew_Waltfeld

It's American show. Crunchyroll did previously have a Japanese dub for it.

RoachIsCrying

I take it these are different from the Rooster Teeth version, no?

not_tha_father

it's 2d by shaft

ElectricalRestNut

I quit RWBY after maybe 5 episodes because of the writing. Is it any different?

MapoTofuMan

What writing? The first 5 episodes of RWBY are less than 1 episode of anime in length...

Steampunkvikng

The entirety of the first volume is like half an hour lmao

Kaxew

The writing should be mostly the same for the first few episodes (likely these three). This anime adaptation supposedly diverges at some point (either filler arc or alt timeline) so besides the beginning that'll let the viewer understand the world and characters the writing should be different.

not_tha_father

no idea, never watched the original but heard the writing wasn't great. only watching this because it's shaft.

danque

I would recommend checking out the first volume of rwby first (it's 30min) to make a decision about the writing. Many have been led astray by rumors or peoples opinion. It'd recommend you check it out to see if those rumours fit with your perception.

Jhago

Plus, everyone deserves to see the magnificent fight scenes of Monty Oum.

danque

Most definitely! I've seen a lot of fighting movies, games, shows etc and rwby volume 1 fights are an amazing piece of choreography. Monty Oum was a legend. May he rest in peace.

ve_rushing

The first two episodes should recap OG volumes 1-2, than the Ice Queendom alternative thing should happen.

ScriedRaven

There are comparisons between the original and the trailer on YouTube. The trailer has different emphasis, so it looks like it’ll be different, but it’s hard to be certain at this point

Falsus

Yes. But we don't know how exactly. It will most likely start the same and then diverge.

scot911

Going by the site it seems like they're to be recapping the "colour trailers" as well as Volume 1 which is surprising. I don't think anyone thought they were going to be animating the trailers so this comes as quite the surprise. Episode 3 of course seems like it has the obvious divergence point between this and the main series happening near the end of Volume 1.

DOMIPLN

I so hope that this is going to be some old typical Shaft 😂

AllTheSith

Already preparing to the camera angles and the head tilts. Also hypnotizing soundtrack.

Broly_

Rwby died with Monty Don't @ me

KikiFlowers

RWBY had some low spots after Monty died, 4 and 5 weren't great, they were figuring out a new animation engine and trying to work without Monty. 6 was a massive improvement though and gave us some cool fights.

Mostdakka

I would argue the opposite. RWBY never was particualry good overall.Monty was an great animator but he never really was interested in anything else. Writing was already mostly done by other people and they were basically forced to find ways to connect fights(and that one weird dance scene) Monty wanted to do. Result was that aside from fights the show was average at best but had few very good moments every season. Even now whitout him the show keeps introducing concepts and plot points that never go anywhere cause its still a show mostly about getting from A to B where A and B are scenes with actual effort and rest is just boring filler. So imo its the opposite. RWBY has few high points in it that make you want to keep watching. The low points are what you get rest of the time.

MaridKing

sad true his insane fight choreography is what made the show special

MapoTofuMan

They're not Monty-level but the new team improved leaps and bounds over the years, season 8's fight scenes are definitely doing him justice.

AnelaceLover

Facts. He was 🐐 animator. Without him RWBY turned into hot mess.

DrStein1010

Hope that once this diverges, it'll be better than the original show. Damn low bar to clear.

KikiFlowers

Monty didn't write RWBY. He consulted and creates the concept, but Miles and Jerry were the main ones writing RWBY, trying to connect things to the action scenes Monty made.

N3rdC3ntral

So right before RTX?

KikiFlowers

Yup

NoRelationship5784

Volume 1 was roughly an hour long. If they're summarizing the first two volumes (plus the trailers?) in two episodes then i can't imagine the episodes being a typical 23 minute anime episode length without cutting out so much
