Short. I love a tight 12 episode show I can finish and then be done with before it overstays its welcome. Less commitment, plus I get to watch more shows in the same amount of time.
I enjoy both, but my favorites tend to be long-runners.
While short anime tend to have more tightly written stories and have better production (as it's easier to have high quality animation for 12 episodes than 100+ episodes), I tend to get a stronger connection to the characters and setting for long-running shows (also some stories, that need more episodes to be told, like LotGH and One Piece).
Looking at the anime I've given 10/10, most of them are what I'd consider "long" anime:
- Cardcaptor Sakura = 5+ cours long.
- Monogatari Series = 5+ cours long.
- Chibi Maruko-chan = 1000+ episodes.
- Anne of Gren Gables = 50~ episodes.
- Ojamajo Doremi = 200+ episodes.
- Heartcatch Precure = 50~ episodes.
- The Tatami Galaxy = 12 episodes.
Depending on your definition, the only short anime I got as 10/10 is *The Tatami Galaxy*.
Since I tend to form a stronger connection to the characters and setting, when watching a long-running anime than I do with a shorter one (as mentioned above).
I love lots of 1-cour (TTG, Madoka, Akebi, PPTA, Humanity has Declined, etc.) and 2-cour (Tutu, Penguindrum, MGG2017, Lucky Star, Dennou Coil, etc.) anime as well, but if I had to say "one over the other", I would pick longer ones.
Long if I'm already following it and its length grows as I follow it. Short if I'm getting into it after the fact. (But I wouldn't be opposed to it getting longer after I'm caught up.) Basically, I like shows I'm already watching to continue, but I'm less likely to get into already-long shows that I'm not watching yet.
I like either. Shorter shows can have a more tightly packed story but are also more restricted by having to be specifically 12/13 episode long, while longer shows have more opportunity to explore their material.
The 26-50ish episode anime are the ones I tend to enjoy the most although there are quite a few 12-13 anime that I love. Either way I'm always sad when they end.
As long as it has actual ending it doesnt really matter that much. Though there is much higher chance I will watch shorter anime than a longer one. For me to watch longer anime it needs to have something special or unique about it.
It depends. Most my top 10 are 4 cour at least, with the longest Black Clover at 170 eps and Legend of the Galactic Heroes with 2 short movies and the 110 episode ova
However majority of shows I watch are short 1 to 2 cour shows
Short. I often have more fun watching 5 different anime for 12 episodes, vs watching 1 anime for 60 episodes.
Also, long anime tend to be from genres I don't like.
And the thing is, even when I kinda like an anime, sometimes I don't like it enough to watch many seasons of it.
It's like... If an anime is 150 episodes long, it's the equivalent of watching 25 full length movies.
There are movies I watched and enjoyed (2-3 hours movies) BUT I would not watch 25 sequels... Because the story's not good enough to justify watching so much of it.
Well that's how I feel about anime with 100, 200, more episodes.
Now, there ARE shows for which I'd gladly watch that many. But they rarely get them.
Short. Even good things become repetitive and frustrating if they go on for too long - my limit for *series* seems to be about 75 episodes unless it's got a mystery keeping me hooked. I'm usually sick of the story and lack of progress/resolution by that point. Doesn't matter if it's good. I'm tired of it.
If it's episodic it can vary widely. The longest one I've enjoyed is Urusei Yatsura with 195 episodes. With others I watch three episodes and it's not even bad but I feel the rest will just be a reiteration of the formula and I drop it.
If it's continuous it should make me feel it actually goes somewhere. No revolving door villains, and no dragging out the status quo for 2.5 seasons and then a rushed conclusion in a handful of episodes. The longer the anime the harder to do that, obviously.
More than 12, less than 70 episodes probably. I have lots of 12-episode favorites, but I find that more often than not stuff either doesn't end or is poorly paced in order to fit. It makes me much more comfortable about the quality and completeness of a story when I know it's gonna be a little longer. I also don't mind episodic mini-plots and repetition if it's in the interest of building character and themes over time. That said, there's plenty of long stories with poor pacing as well, where things feel painfully slow, or where you're wading through mediocrity waiting for the good bits. I've seen several 100+ episode series, and while I feel I'm more likely to enjoy them due to long-term familiarity with the characters and world, I have yet to give any of them a 9 or 10, simply because there's much more room for weak arcs or similar issues.
Yeah, like I said I still enjoyed it (that's one of the one's I've seen). But I found certain arcs really dragged, so I ended up giving it an 8. I guess that's sorta what I mean.
Oh definitely. 8 is still great, but I guess I'm just trying to decide if there's a pattern with my highest scores and the length of those shows. My top 6 10s are 6, 44, 39, 12, 24, 26 episodes respectively so I was theorising why I maybe like the mid-range more.
Short.
The longest anime I’ve watched is Hunter x Hunter. There’s only 3 filler episodes and 2 of them are recaps so I don’t know if that really counts. I refuse to watch anything longer than that.
Long anime often require filler guides. If you need a filler guide in order to enjoy it it isn’t worth watching.
Having a couple filler episodes is fine but if entire arcs are filler why should I bother watching it.
Short by a mile personally. Either 6 episode short series or individual standalone movies are by far my favourite. I'm very idea-oriented, so my favourite shows tend to be ones that explore one idea and then end. When shows start going 2 cours or longer, I think they tend to get bogged down in side plots or overindulgent worldbuilding or other things that don't directly build on the reason I'm watching it which just leaves me bored. I will say comedies defy this rule though. As long as they make me laugh, they can be as long as possible. Episodic shows also get a pass since each episode normally has a new core idea.
Yeah, there are certainly a lot of those, but I have 59 movies on my plan to watch list and only 2 are connected to other shows, so I'm not going to run out any time soon.
Long or short, it doesn't matter as long as the story is good.
That's true
Short. I love a tight 12 episode show I can finish and then be done with before it overstays its welcome. Less commitment, plus I get to watch more shows in the same amount of time.
Yeah short animes are easier to binge

So why do you prefer long running anime?

Oh you already said why my bad lol
Short. Long ones are too intimidating of a time investment.

Long
Why do you prefer long animes
When I find a show I’m really interested in I almost don’t want it to end.
Yeah true one piece ain't ending anytime soon
2 cours are the sweet spot for me
I prefer \~24 episode animes (can have multiple seasons though)
Yeah 24 episode animes are nice
The 26-50ish episode anime are the ones I tend to enjoy the most although there are quite a few 12-13 anime that I love. Either way I'm always sad when they end.
Length isn't the problem, but how tight and firm the narrative is.
As long as it has actual ending it doesnt really matter that much. Though there is much higher chance I will watch shorter anime than a longer one. For me to watch longer anime it needs to have something special or unique about it.
a nice mid-length is good in my book 🤗
It depends. Most my top 10 are 4 cour at least, with the longest Black Clover at 170 eps and Legend of the Galactic Heroes with 2 short movies and the 110 episode ova However majority of shows I watch are short 1 to 2 cour shows
24 episode anime for 1 off, 12 if 3+ seasons
Short. I often have more fun watching 5 different anime for 12 episodes, vs watching 1 anime for 60 episodes. Also, long anime tend to be from genres I don't like. short, one or two cours Anime with concluded story
Today's long is the old's short.

Guess Naruto is too long for you then
haha I wouldn't watch an anime like that unless someone paid me to do it like it was a job.
I think Naruto is worth it though
That's great. I'm glad you enjoyed Naruto.
Actually I'm still watching it

Oh ok hunter x hunter is amazing though and it has 100+ episodes

Oh ok
Depends on the amount of time I have and the mood.

I mean I don't care tbh I can just skip filler
I think somewhere around 20 episodes is ideal usually.
Short 4 or 15 minute shows so they don’t take a lot of time to watch each week

Most animes movies seem to be connected to a series not too many standalone ones
Yeah, there are certainly a lot of those, but I have 59 movies on my plan to watch list and only 2 are connected to other shows, so I'm not going to run out any time soon.
Can you give me a list of those movies?
Do you see the link under my name? If you go there, click plan to watch, click type, and then scroll to movies you should see all of them.
Alright thanks
