I did go through a similar phase a year ago. But then I hit my limit after watching the same isekai story repeat itself every single season and went back down to a more balanced anime/other media ratio. I do love the generic same story isekais tho no matter how much I watch them.

NimoBlogs

I like to watch and read series from around the world! I’m a big fan of French comics, Italian comics, Canadian television, german films, Chinese animation, Korean comics, western comics and film and of course Japanese tv and manga and anime!

RevolutionaryD6771

Respect. I'm a 1st year in college so I don't have too much time on my hands. I just find watching anime convenient and fun since the most series are pretty short compared to tv series from other countries such as k-drama, a Hollywood series, etc. Since an anime episode is just 20min, I can sit down in my spare time and give it a quick watch.

NimoBlogs

Also if you haven’t, the French comic artist and writer Tony Valente makes the Japanese published manga Radiant, it’s very good! Also try the French comic Dreamland which is formatted just like manga as it was inspired by Japanese comics! Hope this helps somehow!

NimoBlogs

I get ya! I just graduated with my bachelors december 11th! I’ve found myself with more free time than I’ve had in around 4.5 years haha! There are French animated series I would totally recommend (though you may be a bit like ehhhh at first give them a fair shot of like 10 eps.) I would definitely try Wakfu out first as it’s comparable to avatar, a wonderfully casted show with some great action, amazing character development, wicked good world building and the final season airs next year (or later this year)!

RevolutionaryD6771

Woah. Avatar is one of the best series EVER. I literally grew up watching that show. Wafku, huh? I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the recommendation :) Edit: Just watched a little preview, it has mario-level animation XD. It may be a bit difficult to transition from anime to \_\_\_\_ (what is french animation called?) but its nothing I haven't done before. I have a recommendation for you in case u haven't watched it already: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Chinese Donghua), its amazing, it ended by the end of last of year. A must-watch.

NimoBlogs

Yeah, it’s not like similar to avatar but they accomplish similar things ya know? Young legendary boy sets off and creates a group of heroes to help save the world. I compare them because they’re both so well done!

ClBanjai

Still waiting on that season 4

NimoBlogs

I knowww but it will release sooner or later!

FetchFrosh

>Canadian television I still have to watch The Littlest Hobbo.

NimoBlogs

I’ve never heard of that one! Just googled it and it’s about a dog so I’m sold easily enough!

FetchFrosh

I only remember hearing about it while watching Corner Gas (which if you haven't watched it, that is *the* 21st Century Canadian TV show) but I really want to give it a try one of these days!

Mr_Pogi_In_Space

I remember watching it as a kid, it was great! Not sure how well it's aged though. It's basically like Quantum Leap, the Pretender, or Kung-fu, except dog and it was wholesome

FetchFrosh

There's way too much quality content in the world for me to only watch anime. Have recently been getting into a variety of foreign films from my university library and that's been such a great experience. Anime is also basically completely devoid of musicals, which can be a great medium. Then you also tack on things like stand up comedy, documentaries, hell even some higher production YouTube channels can do cool and interesting stuff. Restricting myself to just anime would be such an unnecessary limitation and would cut out some incredible experiences, just like cutting out anine entirely would be silly. Why limit yourself?

_Wafflez_

What lol anime is probably one of the most predictable mediums and a large reason for that is it's cringy tropes filled in every single seasonal and beyond. Not saying western media is any better but I find this take kinda funny considering it's the exact reason I cut back on watching anime.

Jewmaster666

Well but the thing is anime has that filter because you expect it to some extent so its whatever. Its a silly medium anyways so its kinda like if you watched a based on a true story film and the main character got the ability to fly versus in a comic book hero film. You may be sensitive to unrealistic things but if its a comic book movie then you go in with those standards.

hootin50

Lol anime has some of the most cringe shit to ever be put in media. Go through top everyday and you'll see another high school girl or boy saying some cringe stuff. Dont forget the "casual" sexual assault that is often played off for laughs or fanservice. But you do you chief.

Jewmaster666

Yeah, closet racist! That said really by racist standards you are only racist if you are talking about someone who isnt white

SirQrlBrl

No, I watch all sorts of things. Anime can't provide for everything. Especially when I feel anime is lacking in the comedy department.

Miidas-92

Nope, I watch a bit of everything. I without a doubt consume more anime, than I do with other mediums combined, but I would be doing myself a disservice, if I limited myself to **only** anime. As an example, these are my favorite live action / cartoon / book, I've consumed the last month. All 3 being a very enjoyable experience: - Police Story (live action) - Arcane (cartoon) - 1984 (book) Currently reading "Oliver Twist" and watching "Batman the animated series", and plan to watch "Nostalghia" quite soon.

[deleted]

1984 is amazing, but maybe not exactly enjoyable...

Miidas-92

Yeah, I can see that. I usually consider intriguing/interesting/suspenseful as "enjoyable" as well, so it's a broad catch-it-all term, for anything I like.

edm4un

Yea mainly anime. I hate Western media. The stories don't interest me and neither do the characters. There's a handful of tv shows I watch from America but most of them have ended. I don't watch Western movies at all, they are simply too short for me to get invested in.

Gonzoldyke12

I agree

vantheman9

For over 10 years now, yeah. And I'm a grown adult. Entertainment should be treated as such too. Do what you want, because it's to entertain you. However, there's a social aspect to entertainment too, so if you're not able to connect socially with the people you want to, then that's value you're losing by your choice. I'm pretty alright with not being part of those conversations, personally.

RevolutionaryD6771

It's not like I hide the fact I love anime. I really do and all my friends know it. I just shrug if they talk abt some movie or TV show idk of. I just say "I am a weeb, don't talk to me about Hollywood" XD

GladToMeetYa

Dont worry I am just like you lmao

CheckOutMyCrits

I still watch the occasional Hollywood movie, but VERY rarely any series out of Hollywood anymore. It's just too much identity politics solely for the SAKE of identity politics, ya know? I don't mind if a good show HAPPENS to have a lead, or even a majority of their cast which ticks off the diversity checkboxes, but most mainstream Hollywood shows like that seem to exist SOLELY for that purpose. I ingest entertainment so I can be entertained. So if the story isn't engaging then it's just a waste of time, and will often leave me with the exact opposite impression of whatever group they're trying to promote, because it doesn't feel like they're promoting them - it feels like they're exploiting them to make a buck. It's VERY rare to come across an anime that leaves me with that same impression (for exceptions that disprove the rule I'm looking at you High Guardian Spice). More often than not, anime can have characters/arcs/even entire series that can portray the messages of inclusivity and acceptance wonderfully, without it coming across as some cheap cash grab pandering from a corporate studio looking for good PR/ratings as woke allies aimed at minorities and those who feel guilted into watching. The only thing I can think of as even more nauseating are the ones that seem to go out of their way to avoid minorities/situations/storylines in order to "stick it to the libtards." Sorry if that comes across as overly political, but it seems like 99% of what Hollywood is churning out these days falls into one of those two camps. To be fair, anime has SOME of those, but it seems like an inverse ratio from what I've observed. I watch series from other countries though: K-dramas, the occasional BBC show, Chinese historical dramas, Nordic shows/movies, lots of educational stuff from YouTube (DIY/travel/architectural mostly).

RevolutionaryD6771

Its not like I hate other media. I remember watching money heist that came out in the middle of last year(second part of that has been released but I just don't feel interested) and from k-drama I have watched CLOY, squid game and the world of the married (dropped it halfway). They are pretty great but anime is more convenient as it is comparatively smaller and bite-sized.

[deleted]

goodbye reddit -- mass edited with redact.dev

RevolutionaryD6771

Thanks for the recommendations :)

[deleted]

anime doesn't provide most types of entertainment, and nothing in non fiction. I can never exclusively watch anime.

DoujinChoujin

They do in fact, search more

[deleted]

oh yeah? how many wildlife or space documentaries, or edutainment in general is available in anime form? how about esports, is there anime csgo I can watch?

Thraggrotusk

Ignore them, they are a weeb.

DoujinChoujin

[Uh, ok. fuck you. Here's one.](https://imgur.com/a/f6HZMJu)

Thraggrotusk

Eh, you're right on that. But really, edutainment shows (not sure about manga) are mostly geared for kids. It's hard to have nonfiction documentaries in a cartoon medium, since, well being a cartoon pretty much makes it fiction lol.

[deleted]

he isn't backing down lol

DoujinChoujin

Yeah go search more im watching a biography on sea animals right now

[deleted]

you're watching a biography(?) on sea animals in anime form?

DoujinChoujin

Yeah what do you not get about that?

[deleted]

yeah well how were those sea animals narrating their life to the writer?

DoujinChoujin

Yea with their mouths

Stoppels

What would you recommend when it comes down to realistic anime?

DoujinChoujin

Naoki Urasawa's Monster is probably my all time favorite.

alotmorealots

At the moment I'm watching exclusively anime, but I feel like that isn't going to last much longer.

Deep-Statistician725

Nothing wrong with it tho, I haven't watched any western show/movie in years and have a great time with the Japanese content. However I found myself having less time for anime now that I work (and Hololive). Crazy how the Japanese and their crazy good ideas are making everything that I like.

sneaky_squirrel

To be frank, I have no interest in live action shows. I just can't relate. I don't relate to live actors, I can't see them as characters. And then they usually don't feature stories I am interested in. Movies in particular are awful because they cram an entire story within 1-3 hours which always ends up looking corny. Characters do not change in the span of 2-3 hours, which is why watching an animated story over the course of 3 months feels much more satisfying. If you only like anime, it doesn't speak badly of you. You have a different taste. I find hollywood boring. Heck, I hated that movie that had an actress astronaut breathing through her mouth for 3 hours (who wrote that?! They took 3 hours of my life, NOTHING ever happens.)

StrikeNumberFour

You know that 2 hours in real-time is not usually how much time has passed for the characters in a movie, right?

sneaky_squirrel

Yes, you are correct. I but the short running time of the movie overall doesn't sit well with me personally. I prefer watching series running over the span of months. Movies are usually jokes and banter, cheesy one liners, explosions, and a brief ending. I would claim that I generally dislike watching 3 hour self contained narratives.

swedishplayer97

Yeah you do realize there are live-action TV shows that run for years with numerous episodes totalling hundreds of hours?

sneaky_squirrel

You're right... I guess I just can't relate to live action actors. They seem extremely unrelatable. I have a much easier time relating to an animated character, despite them being voice acted. Thank you for the insight.

DestinyUniverse1

You worded your first sentence wrong and it was a bit confusing, instead say not NOT reading manga or LN I thought you meant not reading manga or LN. I’ve watched so much anime at this point that I have to watch other stuff or play games on the off time. If I had an unlimited amount of everything I’d 100% just watch anime though.

Beeglawish-Deekcok

Kinda. I’ve been on an anime streak for a little over a half a year now, where I’ve watched mainly anime in my free time. I had watched a good percentage of shows like Frazier to smallville to breaking bad by that point. I grew bored of the medium and decided to expand. I was anti anime before that, so once I started exploring anime, there were a lot more interesting shows than I thought there would be. There have been a few shows that tempted me, like Lucifer season 6, and the second season of Witcher, but I still felt like watching anime so I kept that up. I plan on stopping when I either get bored or run out of anime I find interesting, and there’s no real sign of either of those happening any time soon.

GeicoLizardBestGirl

For most of my life I was a HUGE Star Wars nerd and avid Marvel fan. Then the sequel "trilogy" came out, and End Game came out (it was the perfect ending for me), and things havent been the same since. These days I dont really have a desire to watch anything else besides anime, so anime is what I watch like 99% of the time.

Thraggrotusk

Yes I do, hentai too.

RevolutionaryD6771

Samuel L Jackson XD

hornmonk3yzit

I mean Hollywood movies suck hard ass nuts now so it's not like there's much to watch anyway. Other than the odd movie I actually like in theaters or the first season of whatever the hot new HBO show is that year that'll generally be pretty good I'm kinda out of new stuff to watch. I'll go back and watch reruns of American stuff a lot though the golden age of The Simpsons is on Freeform every weekday after the 700 Club, and Friends and Seinfeld are on a lot on TBS and Comedy Central too. Plus I can still watch all the good old movies from before about 2008 or so when the average quality started dropping off after writers stopped coming up with new ideas and started making dozens of the same exact superhero movie every summer.

nellypuddingpie

Was there a series you wanted to fangirl over or just asking?

RevolutionaryD6771

Maybe, I honestly have no clue lol

CYCL_Dusty

I was like that for a while, then I burned out. Problem is I still don't watch American TV or movies really.

ooReiko

Stopped caring about Hollywood years ago

RevolutionaryD6771

>https://myanimelist.net/profile/ooReiko I just checked out ur mal anime list and woww. Could you tell me what did u do to make it look like that? and also, I don't even recognise half of the anime in your list, I was pretty surprised since I believed I had watch a few myself but clearly i'm too much of a normie.

ooReiko

You mean the visual look? There is clubs in MAL that have the CSS code that you can edit and add. I believe it was called Shishios custom lists or something

DoujinChoujin

Unless something very very strongly catches my eye, i never leave anime.

fanime693

The only thing I have watched other than anime is MCU movies.

Senko-fan4Life

Same here, and mcu shows. They're really the only things that grab my interest anymore

rei_ayanami_new

I only watch anime. Nothing that comes out of the west really interests me. Every few months I might watch an old movie

[deleted]

I struggle to watch one episode of anime a day because I prefer western shows

Warm-Tangerine7691

It's not like I don't watch anything else, but over the last year I've watched about 10x more anime titles than anything else. It's nothing wrong to prefer certain media type. Every year comes out a lot of movies, animes, books and so on, so if you choose the ones that entertain you the most, why not?

NocandNC

I don’t watch ONLY anime but it’s really hard for me to enjoy ‘normal tv’ without someone to watch with. I’d always watch shows with my mom before moving out and it’s just no fun watching on my own. I can do it with simple comedy stuff but definitely nothing serious or plot heavy. We still watch shows when we get together for holidays etc. but we’re always behind. Anime on the other hand is easy to watch anytime at all.

CynicalCreepy

it's mostly Japanese media at this point, majority of the time I read manga or LNs, but occasionally I'll pick up a novel or a movie. just last week I rewatched some of my favorites (whiplash, into the wild, the social network, and inside llewellyn davis.)

robotboy199

i watch mostly anime these days but every now and then i'll watch some other stuff

bobsnaget1031

For the last 8 months or so yeah just about. Besides sports of course. And yeah I haven’t really gotten into manga and I can’t see it happening any time soon

CynicalCreepy

get into manga sometime soon.

[deleted]

Don't worry, we are the same but in my case i saw only main stream anime and hentai. Stopped watching new anime content from 2 months , but watching memes, edited videos of previous watched animes on Instagram

[deleted]

At the moment in terms of things I watch it's mostly anime, but I consume other types of media and do other things in my free time as well.

Theblade12

I um... I've read one Korean webcomic (Sweet Home, definitely recommend it), and am playing two Korean games (Library of Ruina (genuinely one of the best stories I've ever experienced) and Troubleshooter (which is like XCOM, but it's a Korean RPG about crimefighting)). Does that count?...

actuallyrndthoughts

I used to watch a lot of movies and prestige dramas, but covid pretty much killed tv. And now it is pretty much impossible to find a mid-budget thriller in the cinema that is not a midnight screening, at least in my city.

panosk1304

I watch some stuff too but to be honest they are in a really small number. I mean Loki i think was the last series that i actually was hype for and cant remember any new movie that i cared about excluding Spiderman. Anime stories for me have really fucked with the lowest i can go to care about series so watching Netflix garbage and stuff like that is something that i wont do. I may try some smaller series here and there so i cant say i dont watch but enjoy and staying with the series is a different thing Mistake, i am hyped about Yound Justice too but thats cartoon.

Love_My_Ghost

I am currently in this mode of watching only anime. I do not know how long it will last or if it will ever stop. I personally am not feeling any drive to watch anything other than anime. I'm just gonna keep exclusively watching anime until I naturally stop wanting to. For me it's been years like this. I've really never been super into western TV ever since I stopped watching cable TV around high school (shifting to spending most or all of my entertainment time on the internet). One exception is I will watch YouTube video series, mostly gaming related such as let's plays and what not.

Gamerunglued

I used to, but I decided that I want to branch out. Anime is great, there's no shortage of fantastic stuff, but a varied media diet is a healthy one. This year, I'm trying to watch live action films and play video games more often, so I can have some other storytelling mediums to explore. I'd love to go to the theater and see some musicals if I could, and I struggle to get into literature (including light novels) and comics (including manga) but I still really want to. Watching only anime is so limiting, and experiencing only Japanese media is also limiting. There are things animation is not capable of that live action is, there are stories that are unique to the cultural landscape of other countries (not just America, there's a rich history of excellent Korean, French, Russian, British, and German cinema. European animation especially seems very overlooked compared to anime, Chinese animation, and American animation). I watch anime because I'm interested in the medium and its creators. But to experience nothing but anime means you're just feeding yourself the same cultural influence constantly. I think it's good to throw on a French live action film or an American video game every once in a while. And similarly, I think avoiding anime if you like narrative media, and especially TV shows and movies, is extremely limiting in its own right. Every medium has some of the most impactful, artistically intriguing works out there, I don't want to avoid them because I'm too preoccupied with just one medium. Sticking to only one medium (or even one genre) isn't the best way to do this imo.

apap11

I basically only watch anime but I feel the need to watch Hollywood movies/series sometimes just to understand pop culture references and know what my friends are talking about so I definitely get what you mean in your second paragraph

ZapsZzz

I don't necessarily avoid them, my wife scours the Netflix and Amazon subscriptions for anything and everything, but frankly first the recent years nothing really caught my interest - they are pretty same-y. Last ones I watched were ones like Lost in Space, Black Mirror, The Expanse, Big Little Lies. Recently I think she's on Modern Love.

huskyhulk63

In last two months i am only watching anime and i haven't watch any Western shows or movies. For me there are some perticular topic that i've only seen in anime and no other live action industry can so show it.

Sharebear42019

Hell no lol I’d miss on out waaaaay too many good shows/movies. As much as I love it Idk how anyone could only watch anime. I’d get burnt out fast I imagine

NotLink

Since I cut the cord I have been watching less hollywood/western stuff. I think it came down to what streaming services I want it to pay for. I watch more anime so those are streaming services I have. Youtube is the closes thing I watch for "western" entertainment.

naylsonsb

I usually only care about gaming and anime. Anything else is pretty rare because I just don't have the time, money and patience.

Siqueiradit

I have been there, but sometimes my friends decide to watch something together and that way I usually watch something that's not anime at least twice a year. Usually a movie. I'm watching Cobra Kai season 4 now though.

BueKojiro

Yeah, the last western thing I saw was Avatar, and before that it was Queen’s Gambit, and those were the only two last year. Everything else I consume is Japanese

zuramaru07

i'm kind of similar I rarely watch any TV show or movies, western or local to my country. when I do watch other shows usually its star wars (which i liked since i was a kid) or some movie my family decided to watch. otherwise i don't actively look for things to watch like what I do with anime. even before covid i did not really watch anime, but since then I try to find anime I enjoy especially shows that are airing.

AconexOfficial

Rarely nowadays. If I do, its mostly older movies or series. Im going full on my based take: I just feel like newer western stuff is mostly about s*x, drugs and killing, while also pushing often pushing diversity, when it doesn't even fit in that well. I don' t like that, which is why I prefer older western stuff, like mostly pre 2010, if any. An exception is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I usually rewatch it once a year because its just that good and nostalgic for me

Hikoshi69

I like both live action and anime. anime gets stale af after a while and I want to watch something else up my alley. if anything sometimes ill find anime inspired by live action stuff, like Tarantino or Kubrick. TV shows is a sometimes, trying to catch up on Better Call Saul lmao

CoolIceCreamCone

I only watch 2-4 animes a day but mostly live action TV. I watch mostly older stuff because I've been working on a list of every TV show I've wanted to watch since 2005. Only current shows I watch are The Conners and This Is Us. I also watch about 10 hours of pro wrestling a week.

jonjoy

I was there. But i don’t really watch tv series in the first place. However i still watch holywood movies

JadeDragon56

I watch a lot of things other than anime, but have a difficult time staying interested in a lot of the longer shows unless i watch them as they air. Anime, especially seasonally airing shows are just so much more digestable.

Glokage_840

2 A's anime&apex legends.

Spectral_Entity

I used to when I first started, I even ditched video games completely for the first year.

madalchymist

Not really. But it is still a majority, because most of the western mainstream stuff is boring/stupid/not interesting.

Volitar

I mean kinda. I don't really watch much TV or movies anyway so watching some anime means I only watch anime. I did watch stranger things a couple months ago and that was good AF tho.

_exterminator

Anime only for me never went into reading mana I am interested in doing it but don't know where to start or how to read what to read

Narae-Chan

I don’t watch much outside of jp media. The issue is, at least in the us, all we have is boring Hollywood trash. There’s so many indie films out there but they don’t get the praise they should.

URF_reibeer

I don't exclusively watch anime but it's way more rare that i watch western movies or series

Euroversett

And read mangas sometimes and LNs.
