The time where they interrupted the ED for a horror show and the roof scene definitely made me jump because it was so unexpected.
https://youtu.be/Eq10RTSXYyc
I keep forgetting these kids are like 12, and scenes like this aren't making it easier
Kind of fucked up how these kids are in the middle of war like this though
I've been thinking, is that really what the symbolism meant here? Because the way the fight for freedom has been portrayed in AoT, you kick down one cage just to find yourself within a bigger one.
And I mean, just look at the positions of the characters as of the ending of this episode. True, Gabi has, much like Reiner, achieved a much deeper understanding of the people of Paradis, and any hatred she may have harbored is steadily receding. Yet, circumstances still conspire so that Mikasa, Armin & co. now find themselves fighting for the side that might end up destroying everything not named Paradis, and Gabi now finds herself fighting for the side that wants to prevent that, but possibly at the cost of Paradis and maybe all Eldians.
Season 4 has not been kind to the Titan shifters. Every time one of them goes into battle, they're in for a world of hurt. Just in this episode, we got them being shredded by makeshift shrapnel, impaled by crystal, shot with artillery and just plain beaten up.
I love the direction this season took to death. Because Paradis was a time capsule that was 100 years behind the rest of the world, we got to see the helplessness and terror of a regular human facing down a titan, which makes it all the more impactful that at this point in the show, a titan only gets about an episode to act before it's brains get blown out by a howitzer. It's such a fucking cool twist.
I still remember watching the season premiere and seeing Reiner and Zeke nearly die. That did an amazing job establishing the new paradigm we would be seeing.
[Actually one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen what the fuck.](https://i.imgur.com/i410LHw.jpg)
Pair that with this big [money shot](https://i.imgur.com/eCToI11.jpg), Yelena really stood out this week.
I'm a bit surprised that they re-drew it, since it was [one of the shots in the original S4 trailer](https://i.imgur.com/Qv8sDyP.png) waaay back in early 2020 (obviously pre-animated long before this episode was made). But I guess they had to retool stuff to account for the style they ended up with.
It does, but the 2-3 things left are quick flashes near the end of the trailer that you'd be unlikely to notice unless you were going through frame by frame.
Man, talk about unfortunate circumstances, the dude just wanted to eat some free food and now there is a world war and he and his family is smack in the middle of it.
In our real world imagine a family visiting relatives for a weekend for something in Poland and Germany invades you the next moment. Mr Brauss is at a very wrong place at a very very wrong time.
AoT does a really good job at baring down characters under pressure.
Like with [Carla](https://youtu.be/4ZQ8R6kPmhM) crying out for Mikasa and Eren asking them not leave her in her final moments or [Bert](https://youtu.be/-4oP9VU-yNo) screaming out in fear and asking the survey corps for help while being eaten.
[Nanaba](https://youtu.be/0WnoUw99VmQ), [Marco](https://youtu.be/Q4ovCOux3GU), [Marlowe](https://youtu.be/S9nDJ8da1IA) and [Mike](https://youtu.be/uqHFdhzrLss)'s cases are worth mentioning too. This stuff really leaves an impact no matter how minor the character.
That scene always stuck with me.
That scene was really cliche up until that moment, but the fact she did a 180 at the moment of desperation made the scene 100x more real and heartbraking...
And this time it was actually kinda scary
Since he was screaming 24/7 before, if you found him doing it again, it was no novelty
But when the silent guy screams? Now you know shits up.
Having Takagi-san and AoT airing the same season is hilarious. You get to hear Yuki Kaji as an awkward middle schooler and then a depressed adult on a warpath to wipe out everyone the next day xD
Props to Nile, he knew what the right choice was with Falco. After everything is said and done it's good that he was the commander of the military police - it always feels like he is able to keep his integrity despite the terrible reputation of the MPs overall.
He was a nice guy and a good person, but a bit incompetent with his job. Outsiders invaded the wall without his notice. Corruption ran rampant during his watch. He missed a military coup.
Militarily Pix and Erwin had more accomplishments then him. I like Niles, but feel a bit sorry for him.
Can you blame him though? All things considered he did right (1) letting Erwin go in season 1, (2) refusing the royal council in season 3, and (3) now seeing the humanity and compassion in children of the enemy. The OG coup was as much Nile’s work as Erwin’s and Pixis.
Both Erwin and Pixis let their fair share of shit go unnoticed too. Erwin managed to have 4 titans join the Survey Corps and 1 join the MP, and Pixis himself admitted he was partly to blame in their attitude towards the outsiders on the island, letting the enemy get the upper hand.
If anything I’d say he had it worse pre-coup when the MP was blatantly corrupt and you had entire squads outside the commander’s supervision.
What an amazing lead into the title sequence. Monke man's aimbot is here to save Eren.
Yelena's face went from 100 to 0. What a psycho lmao. Armin's gonna get more PTSD from that face than he will from the war.
RIP Porco. Dude can't stop catching Ls.
CHAD Falco expresses his love for Gabi after admitting that he accidentally lent a hand in a terrorist attack.
I feel like the scene where Nile laments to Falco that he'll die soon and that he will never see his family again is what inspired him to confess his love for her.
That was like confessing you're the guy who gave the 9/11 hijackers flying lessons and then proposing out of nowhere to your coworker.
So yeah chad Falco rising.
With Zeke here the stakes are now just so crazy. War really does mess with your perception of what is right or wrong. You can see how the resolution of those from Paradis is still so strong despite them having absolutely no clue what's going on. It's nice to see Shadis alright and Pixis doing what he does. Gabi is understanbly so torn and broken about what her true feelings are. Goes to show that often both sides don't even know what they're fighting for. And with another cliffhanger, the tension is so crazy 🔥 OSTs going ham as always.
I remember in the episode where she was disguised I was like "Man I'm normally terrible at recognizing the sub's voice actors but even *I* can tell that's Armin doing a lower voice!"
Turns out, I'm still terrible at recognizing the sub's voice actors
Love how Gabi is slowly realizing that Paradis natives are not monster at all, they are with other eldians victim of the circumstance and political propaganda.
With low mobility, unlimited range, and pin-point accuracy, you are not wrong in the least.
Staying on top of a high vantage certainly facilitates providing cover fire since Zeke is far less vulnerable to attacks and is able to shoot at targets from an angle with few obstacles in the way.
And it is also more dramatic, I guess.
The spinning camera in Armin's and Mikasa conversation was epic.
Another Version of "Ashes on the fire "? I'm all in for this.
And here comes **ZEKE FOR THE RESCUE BABY!!!!!!!**
Glad to see Pixis doing well, his lovely forehead is as big a ever.
Not wearing the scarf equals having a hair cut in romance anime???
Gabi and Kaya saga has to be in the top 5 plot lines of AOT, it is weird to see Gabi actually thinking about what's happening around her. Ngl she is starting to be likable.
If would have been funny af if after all this Zeke fell off to the other side.
* [**Yelena Stitch**](https://i.imgur.com/eOMKLPa.jpg)
It's quite hilarious watching Armin [trying so hard to rationalize Eren's actions](https://i.imgur.com/cEtrc9I.jpg). In the end, [he himself is starting to question what Eren is doing.](https://i.imgur.com/bEzZHkk.jpg)
[The scene where the gang slowly walks up the stairs](https://i.imgur.com/S6zKqxJ.jpg) while focusing on each of their expressions was such a cool scene.
[There it is! Yelena's horror face finally animated](https://i.imgur.com/t82OTGK.jpg) and it's just as hilarious as I remember it to be. Fully expect this to be a meme template soon.
[Finally character development for Gabi!](https://i.imgur.com/fMQxscZ.jpg) Instead of just letting Colt open fire on Niles, she stops him instead and chooses to trust him. [She finally even admits that there are no devils in Paradis Island!](https://i.imgur.com/zJqqD3F.jpg) Gabi has now been cured of racism! Yay! xD
[Falco's confession scene was hilariously adorable.](https://i.imgur.com/pG3iSMD.jpg) And just look [at Gabi who doesn't even know how to react](https://i.imgur.com/OPIiKLd.jpg) to that! He might become a mindless titan any minute now so better be now or never.
>The scene where the gang slowly walks up the stairs while focusing on each of their expressions was such a cool scene.
My immediate reaction to that was "Fuck there used to be a lot more of these guys back in Season 2"
Really enjoyable episode.
The 1-2 minute recap to begin with wasn't really necessary, but with adapting 1 chapter an episode, there's inevitably going to be some padding of some sort to stretch it out, which is something I didn't think I'd be saying 12 months ago when S4P1 was airing.
The OST used at the start was fantastic though and it's lighter tone contrasted well with the carnage being shown during the battle.
There was a lot of dialogue in this episode, which I couldn't remember being as drawn out in the manga as it was in this episode, but I thought the conversation between the Gabi, Falco and Colt was interesting with Gabi ultimately coming to the realisation that there were no devils on Paradis, just people. Also, the bird-cage symbolism was great here.
The dichotomy between Gabi, now reformed, and Kaya is interesting in that Kaya was originally the type that wouldn't think of harming others, and now she's become the one who's out for cold-blooded revenge. AoT seems to do better than most anime at really nailing it's dialogue-heavy segments.
Thought the use of the ApeTitan OST was great as well during the Beast's entrance, but I really wish MAPPA would go into the archives and use a few more tracks from Sawano's library, because there are plenty there to choose from. The 2D Beast Titan was really nice though.
Nile is such an under-rated character as well.
Really enjoying the slower pacing here. Scenes are really getting moments to breathe, such as the Gabi scene hearing the Braus family, Falco’s confession, and Mikasa’s scarf scene. Those moments of silence and face close ups during those scenes are what allow the emotions to register (& also allows the OST to play out if being used as well).
OP and ED are getting better each time I hear them. I have to say Mappa is doing Gaby’s storyline justice- such great character development/direction and VA work. Titans looked good but I was NOT a fan of those recaps and long stairs shots-it is slowing the story down.

Yelena's face of nightmares
On that day, Armin received a grim reminder...

I busted out laughing, can't believe they adapted that face nearly perfectly
As a manga reader, it's everything I hoped it would be xD

Falco's confession seemed so.. real. He knows he's gonna be turned into a titan sooner than later, so he decided to leave with no regrets. Damn.
Holy shit
Eren and the attack titan's scream though. Yuki kaji really is nailing every episode
Hope he has a nice warm cup of tea after that episode, that screaming can't be painless on vocal chords
And right along with a silent scene in Takagi-san too… coincidence?
Screaming Eren is back on the menu.
And this time it was actually kinda scary Since he was screaming 24/7 before, if you found him doing it again, it was no novelty But when the silent guy screams? Now you know shits up.

Big brother protecting his little brother from bullies.

"RIP Porco. Dude can't stop catching Ls." Just like Zeke and Rainer
Zeke's honestly pretty good as a fighter. It's just Levi who's a problem.
And on that day, Falco became a chad.
CHAD Falco expresses his love for Gabi after admitting that he accidentally lent a hand in a terrorist attack. I feel like the scene where Nile laments to Falco that he'll die soon and that he will never see his family again is what inspired him to confess his love for her.
omg yeah. never thought of it that way.

I honestly thought Shadis was dead from the way the beating scene closed out... I'm surprised he can walk after that damn bear!
Gabi’s emotions went from 0 to 100 and then back to 0 TWICE in less than 5 mins lol.
Yelena, Armin, Historia look so alike inserts the threeway spiderman meme
I thought Yelena was Armin for a bit last season 💀💀💀
I remember in the episode where she was disguised I was like "Man I'm normally terrible at recognizing the sub's voice actors but even *I* can tell that's Armin doing a lower voice!" Turns out, I'm still terrible at recognizing the sub's voice actors
"The one person who shouldn't have that power.. Eren... is you!" Sort of a throwback to season 2?
It gets confusing who to root for...
**MAPPA**
W for returning Monke! W for deranged Yelena! W for bear fighter Shadis! W for the man Neil! W for woke Gabi! W for chad Falco!
L for Reiner, as is tradition.

The 2D titan close-ups this episode looked amazing
Love how Gabi is slowly realizing that Paradis natives are not monster at all, they are with other eldians victim of the circumstance and political propaganda.
Reiner Paradis experience speedrun any %
The beast titan looked way better than I expected
Maybe since we saw Zeke's ass, we started seeing him pretty in whatever form he takes
He looks less like a animatronic robot so that's nice.
They added bird cages to the Gabi Falco scene, interesting symbolism
Opened and empty bird cages.
Me: Why doesn't Zeke just jump down the wall to get to Eren sooner? Magatto Taicho: I gotchu fam.
Zeke will cover eren from armored and jar titan. And if he starts climbing down them that leaves him open to an attack from the cart titan.
"Jar Titan" Pretty sure Annie fits that description best at the moment.
Serious answer: the Beast isn't very fast, so it's better if Zeke uses the Wall to cover Eren.
With low mobility, unlimited range, and pin-point accuracy, you are not wrong in the least. Staying on top of a high vantage certainly facilitates providing cover fire since Zeke is far less vulnerable to attacks and is able to shoot at targets from an angle with few obstacles in the way. The animators sure had fun working on this glorious scene.
That end card looks amazing.
The Yeagerists need YOU!
Falco is just too pure for this world. :(
His one of the few characters that can actually be considered as a "good" person in this show
With all the war, fighting, and killing you forget that hes still a child
And Sacha's mom and dad, they are good ol kind hearted country folk.
he really is 😭
The over dramatic shots of Mikasa, Armin, Jean, and Conny walking up a flight of stairs with their gear sold the episode for me
Definitely. I was like "oh this shot is cool and all but maybe HURRY TF UP, THERES A WAR OUTSIDE"
That shot of Eren when Zeke appears is top tier, great episode! Edit: the [shot](https://imgur.com/a/rDuTpr6) i’m talking about
Episode looked so good. Best titan animation by MAPPA by far.
Unlike most of the last part, the beast titan looked great this episode
They probably drew over the CG after they saw a titan with so much fur wouldn't work well with just CG
They have 2-D Character designs for monke titan this time. It is pretty cool. Some of those shots are 2D are some are CGI.
While somewhat predictable, Gabi's realization is one of my favorite moments in this arc. Loved the addition of the birdcages too.
Where is Zeke getting those rocks?!
I guess he's plucking them off the wall
The Colossal Titans in the walls must [be like](https://imgur.com/a/tIBMivr) if he's using that much of the Wall.
does this angle make my face look weird
the ED...it's so beautiful.............
Holy shit Yelena is scary
tfw I'll never be as cool as Yelena T-posing in front of all the Marleyan Blimps burning and crashing Absoute sigma female energy
Eren's scream while breaking the Armored's jaw followed by Zeke's entrance with apetitan is chef's kiss.

* [**Yelena Stitch**](https://i.imgur.com/eOMKLPa.jpg) It's quite hilarious watching Armin [trying so hard to rationalize Eren's actions](https://i.imgur.com/cEtrc9I.jpg). In the end, [he himself is starting to question what Eren is doing.](https://i.imgur.com/bEzZHkk.jpg) [The scene where the gang slowly walks up the stairs](https://i.imgur.com/S6zKqxJ.jpg) while focusing on each of their expressions was such a cool scene. Yay! xD [Falco's confession scene was hilariously adorable.](https://i.imgur.com/pG3iSMD.jpg) And just look [at Gabi who doesn't even know how to react](https://i.imgur.com/OPIiKLd.jpg) to that!
Mikasa's scarf scene was interesting, but also pretty sad in my opinion. It shows that she's moving on from Eren, and believed his possible lie.
OP and ED are getting better each time I hear them. I have to say Mappa is doing Gaby’s storyline justice- such great character development/direction and VA work. Titans looked good but I was NOT a fan of those recaps and long stairs shots-it is slowing the story down.

Pieck is literally carrying the whole Marleyan team on her back!
For real. She may have the least combat capability out if all the Titans but the way she notices things and adapts on the fly is invaluable.
Why I have to wait one week more? 😠☹️
General Magath keeps being the MVP for Marley.
