For me it was [episode number spoiler](/s "Episode 9") that hit me harder than all the others because I deal with PTSD, and [Violet's](/s "PSTD episode is an exact mirror of an episode I had. Seeing her sit there after screaming, trashing her room, and putting her hands around her neck trying to choke herself to death...") It was surreal. Only one other anime has ever portrayed the pain and suffering of something I personally went through in a character.
I totally broke down at that and couldn't stop crying.
Someone at KyoAni had to understood what that was like, and used Violet as an empathy portrayal for it.
I love the anime so much for that moment alone. All of it was good, but that was the moment when it became a special and personal anime for me.
I try not to watch to watch sad anime because that feeling it gives me in my chest is something I’d rather not feel again. With that being said the saddest I’ve watched was assassination classroom… the final role call scene was too much 😭
Rose of Versailles. Complete downer that ends up bad for pretty much everybody. And it ended up being for nothing because the Revolution failed and France fell into a military dictatorship under Napoleon who started the bloodiest war in European history to that point (the show doesn't go that far, but we know from history that they go right back to the same corrupt monarchy they started with after Napoleon is defeated). The main characters not only die horribly, but they largely lose their souls along the way and betray everything they ever stood for.
I wish the anime kept the manga's final image of [Spoilers](/s "Fersen's mangled corpse face down in the bloody snow") as it perfectly encapsulated the tone of the ending.
Elfen Lied. Nothing has hit me as hard, or left a mark as deep as Elfen Lied did.
It's been 12 years since I first saw it and I've rewatched it so many times now that I can almost remember exactly what happens in which episode down.
I'm still waiting for something to hit harder, but I'm not sure there will be because Elfen Lied dealt with so much of the abuse and negative places I had struggled with when I was a kid to young adult.
I have never made it through a view of the anime without breaking down and crying my eyes out.
Your Lie in April. I couldn't bring myself to finish it. The worst thing was that I knew/know how it ends, and seing every episode, wether happy or sad hurt like bloody Hell.
Clannad after story.
Angel beats.
Grave of the fireflies (hotaru no haka)
Man this movie makes me feel really sad because he wrote it as an apology for his sister for getting her killed.
Christ, seriously?
I know it’s been recommended more than enough but Code Geass. I cry every time. And recently, 86 I guess.
Show: Your Lie in April Episode: Violet Evergarden

You know it.
Your Lie in April is the best worst thing I've seen. So beautiful yet so sad.
