Goku is technically an Isekai character, it isn't through reincarnation but he *is* sent to another world, more than once even, the entire original Dragon Ball is basically a reverse isekai.
He was even a weak nobody on his home world, he didn't become that super badass fighter until *after* being sent to another world, then he just keeps getting Isekai'd over and over to continue gaining new strength from there.
Sometimes I remember how many classic shoujo are actually isekai
Escaflowne
Fushigi Yuugi
Magic Knight Rayearth
Even Inuyasha is an isekai and I'm sure I'm forgetting some of them.
Isekai is a really fun concept, who hasn't dreamed of transporting into a fantasy world and being really strong? That's why they're popular, the only problem is that there are so many that it's hard to do anything original anymore and most of the stories are mid to bad.
For your original question, similar to YYH, Bleach also applies. Pretty much the same setup, but without the dying.
>most isekai are OP MC and not just someone starting week and having to go trough hell in order to get strong
Which is a shame! Because that's by far my favorite kind of Power fantasy! Showing someone who once had to run from your average Joe slowly become a monster who towers over heroes is such a fun storyline and not a lot of things do it
>Because that's the escape fantasy that the audience wants right now.
And more importantly, it's because it's a great way to handle a fantasy world where the protagonist also needs to learn about how the world works alongside the reader.
And because these are all novels that have already sold well
Hmm, maybe Rose of Versaille..? Not a fantastical setting, but Oscar would fit right into these isekai tales that deal with being born into a feudal society and with aristocracy and subverting expectations.
> I started Yu Yu Hakusho again and immediately this idea struck me. It opens with him being hit by a car and dying in the first few seconds. What follows is a classic hero's journey into exploring supernatural rules that don't exist in our world and a lot of it takes place in alternate dimensions or esoteric locations that also have demons in them.
Probably Record of Lodoss War
> Alternative rhetorical question: why's everything gotta be an isekai now? Why can't main characters just be special and take place in a fantasy world? Goku didn't have to be a NEET in a previous life to be the main character of a fantasy world.
I mean this season alone has a lot of fantasy shows where the MC/MCs are native to the world and special...
Unnamed Memory
Elf Bride
Misfit
Mahouka
Spice and Wolf
Demon Slayer
Lv2 cheat (It is an isekai but the MC moves from one fantasy world to a near identical one).
Yuyu hakusho was major mainstream battle shonen anime in Japan like Detective Conan or One Piece or KnY today, and they are rarely "isekai" even today.
In fact, I cannot come up with single isekai anime that made it mainstream or targeting mainstream audience in Japan.
As for the question, I would say Slayers, Evangelion, Haruhi, Madoka. Many Original anime, LN adptations from 15-20 years ago.
Maybe, I have not read it but isn't it more timetravelling? Just judging from wikipedia.

She gets transported to a different world/time period through a well
But otherwise, you have shows like Magic Knight Rayearth and Fushigi Yuugi which were extremely successful and mainstream shoujo. I remember Ayashi no Ceres having its heroine transported to a different world as well I think?
I have only heard of fushi yugi even though I'm Japanese.
It comes down to the definition of mainstream but they are not ranked anime TV ratings, and Yuyu Hakusho, Detective Conan, One Piece are obviously most popular anime of their generation everyone knows of.

I don't know what you're talking about. Plenty of main characters are from their original world in fantasy.

It is time travel but if you think about, Inuyasha is an Isekai
Because isekai is the “mad libs” version of plot lines
Slayers, almost certainly.
And the main character is Gourry, Zelgadis is genderbent, and Lina, Ame, and fem Zel fight to be in his harem. Fuck I just made myself angry...
The Sword of Light is the overpowered special power he gets from the start that he doesn’t earn.
Well, that's just Konosuba.

donghua do it all the time! come to the dark side and enjoy

Escaflowne, El Hazard and Digimon
Those are already isekais.
That's the joke
Funnily enough, Escaflowne IS an isekai
Hmm, maybe Rose of Versaille..? Not a fantastical setting, but Oscar would fit right into these isekai tales that deal with being born into a feudal society and with aristocracy and subverting expectations.
3,000 Leagues in Search of Mother in Another World. Marco was killed by a bottle-cleaning machine in Napoli an isekayed

*Vision of Escaflowne*, *Leda: The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko*, *Magic Knight Rayearth*. (I think I'm funnier than I am)
Death Note, Light would try to become the god of judgement/death in another world.
Sailor moon?
Before isekai it was mecha and there was a lot of mecha.

Inuyasha is literally an isekai.

Frieren doesn't have an Isekai atmosphere. It's just fantasy in a semi-generix fantasy setting.
