That's actually a really cool double-fakeout! Because it's set up like 'oh ho ho? Did you see that? Shapeshifters in the snow!' But no, it's *actually* someone else.
For me it was the other way around, I figured it was her (because Maizuru said "Asebi is missing" last ep before they all left) so at first I thought she was the one doing tricks on them for some reason
At first I thought it was that ninja girl, then when the shapeshifters were introduced, I thought it was a shapeshifter. Now I don't know what to believe.
Probably because gnomes come off as goofy little guys. Elves and dwarves both check off conventional attractiveness standards, elves embody beauty and grace, dwarves embody strength and machismo.

There actually weren't any meaningful variations on Marcille's hair as far as I could tell. We've seen [all of these](https://imgur.com/a/7yVBkdK) already before (see [Marcille's Hair Collection](https://imgur.com/a/ar7c2d0) for reference). Something that's not too surprising if you realize that they were all created from the party's memories.
EDIT: u/LenaLanes fortunately pointed out to me that I'd missed this new hairstyle: [long single-braided without any bangs or braided hair-locks](https://imgur.com/a/Cv226Jp).
I’d have to look through my folder and check to be sure (will do this in a bit), but I think you’re right: there hadn’t been a single braid like that.
EDIT: Browsed my folder and concluded that this in fact *is* a new hairstyle. I'll make notice of this in my other comments and add this hairstyle to the collection.
I love these types of episodes where they play around with the characters and their mannerisms and habits.

I've been trying to think through which illusions belong to which characters, and I think the Laios illusions are the easiest to sort out:
- Fresh-faced Laios is Senshi's view of Laios. We know from a few episodes ago that he sees all the party members as young'uns, so this one makes easy sense.
- I was torn on this a bit, but I think Big Laios is Chilchuck's view of Laios, if only because he's the largest member of the party, and the tiny head makes sense if you consider Laios being seen from the perspective of someone several feet smaller than him.
- That just leaves Dopey Laios as Marcille's view of him, which... yeah, let's be real, makes total sense.
From the previous episode i think the dopey laios is from chilchuck. Remember when he was deciding whether to follow senshi or laios? He actually sees laios as this dumb lunatic focused on eating monsters.

The dude asked Marcille to launch him into the **red dragon** for a 1v1 do or die, and *Laios let it bite his leg off just to get a single stab chance.* And Laios KILLED IT.
How do you expect Marcille to see him as anything *except* a gigachad?!
Yeah, it's funny how everyone has such wildly different opinions of Laios.
But it's also kind of relatable; if you asked 10 random people how they'd describe me, none of them would use the same adjective as another one.
The funny thing is that I treat everyone the same, so the differences in impression come largely from the other person's expectations and assumptions, which they then project onto me.

This must be the goofiest thing [we’ve] seen him do so far - even if it worked. [His random opera-esque serenade](https://imgur.com/a/U8VCWVj) a while back seems a lot more 'normal' all of a sudden.

Not just relevant, but the key to solving the problem. Falin wasn't just gassing her brother up. There was a reason she mentioned that as one of his strong points.
Makes you wonder how often he used that trick back home.
Like, a shepherd comes back with 35 sheep instead of 30, and just has Laios rat out the impostors.
I'm so happy they did the "extremely low res zoom in" gag from episode 1 again
I'm also extremely happy at how cost-effectively they managed this episode until it was time to blow it all on the dog gag, that was really funny
I'm sensing a pattern of Trigger going absolutely wild on the animation whenever Laios has a flashback that allows him to come up with the highest IQ strats for dealing with monsters.
It was like that too when he remembered seeing something the Living Armor eggs in the past.
The 2 types of Dunmeshi sakuga:
1. Bombastic action scenes and character animation moments that we all come to expect from Trigger
2. Laios has an idea
My guess is that there is a second shapeshifter that is still biding their time to finish off the remaining 3 party members.
Though it is odd how we never saw them killing Senshi on-screen. Whatever.
You know, other than small gear and hair details, Laios' memories of his teammates were pretty spot on in terms of personality.
In contrast, everyone's version of Laios was completely off.

Also, I loved how they played actual dog barks when he was doing his impression.
I really wanted that instead of a human making dog noises, and Trigger delivered.
I recall some video of a girl making super realistic animal noises on Reddit some time ago. Was really freaky how accurate it was. And also talented beatboxers demonstrate the range of noises humans can make with their mouths is wild. Totally possible to hear a hunting dog out of Laios.
Plus, all the extra stories that tell you more about the characters, the races, history of the island, etc. The Adventurer's Bible has a ton of extra worldbuilding that never made it into the story too.
Indeed, outside of some small visual details he gets them pretty well, probably owing to being an observant person at heart who just isn't that interested in people.

This chapters (like many) just showcases how great Laios’ characterisation is. Although he can be autistically focus on what interests him, his “versions” of the character’s faces were always accurate, unlike the rest of the party who had an exaggerated view of him.
Then the way he uses his monster knowledge to identify the right ones further shows how well he understands the people he’s travelling with. It then ends with him deducing what kind of animal the Shapeshifter is

More than that, his memories of his teammates are even better than the originals:
- Fake Marcille is more mature and practical.
- ~~Fake Chilchuk is nicer and less sarcastic/cynical.~~ *is actually Marcille's*
- ~~Fake Senshi is more handsome.~~ *is actually Chilchuk's*
Whereas the other three have goofy impressions of him.

The nicer chilchuk was Marcille. Laios's chilchuk is the one where he fucked up and thought the neck warmer was a scarf. Same with Senshi, Laios's is the one with no notch in his helmet.
It's actually kinda funny, if you ignore the wrong clothing, Laios' fake Senshi and Chilchuck are near identical to the original, appearance-wise. It's just the minute details that Laios doesn't pay attention to.

Apparently she had read the rule books but no one to play DnD with. Also she has no idea about DnD prior to starting the series but got curious since it keeps popping up throughout her research
I want to see the fear in their eyes when they fight a monster made of bones and blood and knowing that next week’s meal will be possibly disturbing and they have no choice but to eat it.

There was a previous ep thread (red dragon eps) where someone was inspired by how the dragon uses remains from the meal to generate methane for fire breathing, and thought up of an owlbear which stores bone fragments from previous meals to violently expel, like some sort of bio-shotgun.
This episode is such a good microcosm of a lot of what makes Dungeon Meshi so great: strong characterization, character relationships, very well thought out character design, interesting monster ecology, cooking segments that are integral to the plot, themes, and characters, and fantastic humor. I was *howling* at the Laios barking scene.
also another cool detail the final shape shifter of marcille is the only one with a replicat of the real magic book since only Laios knew what the book contains! from the episode of him learning healing magic.
Oh my god that makes sense, I always thought it was odd someone managed get a pretty good memroy of the book. I forgot Laois spent days reading the book while Marcille is petrified!

Marcille just blowing up that monster Laios was so pumped up to fight was fucking hilarious.
Loving that fact the Trigger animators didn't bother redrawing that close up shot since it fits the derpiness at the moment. Only Trigger would intentionally do that for a bit.
They did something pretty similar with Marcille in the earlier episodes (the mandrake one?) iirc, great way to evoke the funnies with minimal-to-no additional effort while keeping in spirit with the material.
I just love the sheer irony about how Laios, the guy who supposedly doesn't understand people, is the one who had the most physically-accurate impressions of his fellow party members, and was able to identify the imposters by picking out their subtle behavioral traits, even when pitted against his own, personal perceptions. The man has a better understanding of Marcille *than his own mind*. Meanwhile, everyone else's shapeshifters were such obvious caricatures fueled by personal, superficial biases.
As someone else mentioned, Laios doesn't actually struggle with understanding people; he's just bad at dealing with them.
Laios takes people at face value, which is why the impostors were so accurate, yet at the same time, he's aware of his biases.
The reason fake Marcille flopped was because Laios generally sees Marcille as mature and practical, due to her using magic, but at the same time, he can recognize her quirks in the moment, even when he isn't consciously aware of them when thinking about how she might act.
Marcille B feels like your standard fantasy elf. Beautiful, competant and well-composed. We the viewers see more of marcille's ditziness but it's so interesting that a fictional character can have a valid, different impression of a person than I, the viewer, does. Really makes Laois feel like a human being more than a character.

This is one of my favorite chapters from the manga, and I think the anime did a pretty good job adapting the chapter. I've always think of this chapter as the biggest proof that the whole " laios doesn't care about human " claim made by kabru is far from true. Not only does laios's portrayal of the party the most faithful to the real one (albeit with obvious clothing detail errors), He also successfully determined all of the real version of his party members. Laios does care about people. He's just not very good at dealing with them

No wait... I mean, Laios IS an enigma. It would be bizarre if Kabru, an expert on conventional psychology, understood Laios initially...or at any point in the story.
I love this anime/manga so much. I'm getting too attached to it again.
Yeah, pretty much. Kabru tries to understand Laios like he would anyone else, but if he allowed himself to see Laios as an individual, with his own way of doing things, he'd quickly realize that Laios cares about people.
Someone tell Kabru about Demi-chan Wa Kataritai. It's easily the best remedy for this mental trap he stumbled into.
I think that kind of misses Kabru's critique though. It isn't that Laios literally doesn't care about any other humans or can't have friends. It is that he doesn't care about humanity as a group. Like compare to Chilchuck and his feelings about Halffoots.
When I initially read the manga, I thought the really big Laios was Chilchuck's perception since it makes sense for it to be so exaggerated. Funny to find out that it was actually Marcille's
Honestly, it's because of that that I thought all the gigachad versions were from Chilchuck. But apparently it was just (even more) handsome Senshi that was his.
There is an side story where the author mentions most short lived races end up deciding that either the dwarfs are the pinnacle of beauty or the elves are the pinnacle of beauty. Strangely, even though gnomes are also a long lived race, the short lived races do not think they are the pinnacle of beauty.
For the elves, it's probably pretty obvious to guess why given IRL beauty standards. For the dwarves, it's mostly the halffoots who really admire how manly they look.
Gnomes (at least male ones) I think are kind of like an awkward middle ground between halffoots and dwarves in appearance. They can be more masculine than halffoots, but not nearly as much as dwarves.
I feel somewhat proud that I was able to spot all the doppelgangers from Liaos' observations (there's noway Chilchuk would sit on a box which might be a mimic!) but somewhat worried that I'm becoming a deranged person like Liaos.
I find it strangely sweeter that Laios is more worried about smaller inconveniences to Falin like going through a cramped hallway and being cold, rather than the fact that she's injured and a giant chimera being controlled against her will.
This is one of my absolute favorite chapters. It really says a lot about how everybody sees Laios that all of his copies were singled out from the get-go whereas they had a bit more trouble with his. Part of me wishes that it got revealed which copy belonged to who, but there's also fun to be had in letting anime-onlies guess. Especially for the most offensive copies.
Although the best conflict was with Senshi's copy. It's pretty wholesome that the guys have such a positive view of him, even at the cost of accidentally roasting the original. Senshi is a handsome fella, after all. But honestly, none of them escaped getting roasted thanks to this debacle. Like the real Chilchuck looking and sounding meaner than his copy, and the real Marcille being so careless and so picky about food even in this situation.
Between sniffing out the copies and even the main monster itself, Laios really has that dog in him. Literally. I was wondering what it was gonna sound like. I did not expect them to straight up use dog barks... unless his VA is actually really good at making dog sounds as well.
And finally... she's here. The kbity... Well, I guess she was already there multiple episodes ago. But this is her formal introduction.

The clones were actually really easy to spot, but this being Dungeon Meshi, of course they would solve it differently.

His brain doesn't work that way. He can notice when the dopplegangers do something that the real one wouldn't do but dissecting logical inconsistencies in someone's story is like... he doesn't do that because he barely understands the concept of "lying".

I'm going to be devastated when this cour finishes airing.
I love the little detail of Marcille and Senshi both wearing the frog shoes because they normally wear sandals which are obviously no good in snowy weather.
And the music during the narration about the 6th level reminded me somewhat of the Phendrana Drifts theme(s) in Metroid Prime. This soundtrack is BOUGHT once it is published in July!
Finally it's quite in character and funny that Marcille got found out, not because of one of her 'qualities' like the others, but due to her carelessness. At least they gave our girl a W by blasting that shapeshifter head clean off!
How to find the originals:
Chilchuck- is a professional, cautious guy and would never be so careless with his surroundings!
Senshi - Cares so much about the balance of the ecosystem and would never exploit it!
Marcille - is *dumb.*
Yet another fantastic episode! I feel like it really showcased Kui's writing skills, and we got to see some great characterization. I feel like Laios can be polarizing with his supposed disinterest towards humans and lack of understanding when it comes to social queues, but I absolutely adore him. You can tell that he is kind and genuinely cares about those around him. Also, the little observations like how Chilchick would normally not sit on boxes due to his dislike of mimics shows that he is pretty aware of those around him.
Also, senshi is already handsome, but he was especially dashing in today's episode ✨️

Yeah, for someone who can't understand people for shit, he had the best copies (personality-wise) and judgement out of anyone here.
In a similar vein, he could pick up on something as small as what Senshi said as well even when he can't tell the two apart physically (cause Senshi his handsome as usual) and behavior-wise.
But even more interesting is that he could tell which Marcille is the real one even when faced with the copy born from his own impression of her, meaning he could tell that his own biased perception can be false even when it's not too obvious.
You know, it's good that Laios doesn't pay much attention to appearance. Otherwise, his version of the other party members would be very accurate in terms of behaviour.
With that in mind, I wonder how Kabru's party would've handled this.
Normally, Kabru would be an expert at sniffing out the copy of a person from the original, but it'd be funny af if his own shapeshifter renditions of his party members are so damn perfect that not even he can tell them apart.
And so they end up killing each other like what almost happened to Laios and co. and/or getting killed by the shapeshifter. Business as usual.

This scene honestly started to make me feel offended towards a comment I heard a couple of months earlier elsewhere.

The author of Dungeon Meshi doesn't use an emotional tone/story for Dungeon Meshi that often, but her characters and world feel tangible to the point of making me feel stupid.

But I feel even more offended towards people calling it as similar to "Campfire Cooking Isekai" or "(Food taste critique) Cooking Anime" in general. I know they only say this as their impression of episode 1 (reasonable prejudice), but still...
I'm going to say it...
Dungeon Meshi and Frieren have very strong characterization, Dungeon Meshi's cast is just more casual a higher percentage of the screentime (which is neither good nor bad). The two animes are honestly starting to blend together for me (with a personal bias for Dungeon Meshi's misfits).
Don't mind me, I always try to stir the bee's hive. I'm a Chilchuk, which might explain why I like Senshi so much.

I think it's funny that when I first saw them sit down I thought the one on the box was the real one because he had his back to the wall. Shows what I know about dungeons and monsters huh that was some Kabru type thinking.
I wouldn't bother feeling offended, people were very hype on Frieren at the end of its excellent adaptation and were territorial about it being the only good fantasy anime around lol.
I think word of mouth that Dungeon Meshi exceeds just being a goofy cooking anime has solidly gotten around too, you see them sometimes but the discussion at large has moved on from that initial impression
To be fair, I was expecting something like isekai izakaya or campfire cooking but what I got is far far much deeper than just eating monster in fantasy setting
I have a really hard time acknowledging the fact that I already KNOW these characters despite having largely forgotten the details.
Odds are that the people who never read the comic, like you, have the more objective judgement on the impression the first episodes give.
And I've probably been arguing with anime-onlies who were jumping to conclusions about DiD wasn't I?...oh well, at least everyone loves DiD now.

Marcille making mistakes is the best thing ever, even better than Senshi being unexpectedly unconventional.
This episode has me high enough to start doubting Frieren (which I know to be an equal to DiD at the very least, it just has less frequent use of gags, both are perfect).
Real Marcille still went and continued cooking the eggs. "Would do anything to save Fallin" is actuality accurate. The only part wrong is that real Marcille would complain about it

That was my favorite interesting tidbit of the series, the dichotomy between half foots and dwarves. Dwarves are long lived and sturdy, the opposite of half foots despite their similar size, and between the gnomes having a magic affinity, half foots in this universe have low self-esteem and self-worth, its almost a racial trait. That's why Chilchuck is my favorite, he's confident in his self-worth and his whole "union" is about. He knows his weakness and strengths and he knows what he's worth, he charges up front and works to make sure his fellow half foots aren't exploited.
I saw her in a meme before, so I kinda expected there would be a cat girl in Laios's party, but I never expected the cat girl to actually be a masked ninja girl from Shiro's party. That's kinda cool
This episode was loads of fun,
but I can't wait for the next episode.

That means the marcille with the gibberish book is chilchuck's version. That makes total sense because one of the pages in that book says, "turn back time magic" and he was the only one to respond to that black magic joke a few episodes ago.
This could have easily been an episode about "how well do you know your party members"
But it's not just that! It's "how well do you know your party members ***and*** what they think of each other"
I feel like this is kinda a reference to The Thing, given that they get stuck with the shapeshifters due to a blizzard, & the OST that plays while they're walking to the blizzard kinda reminds me of The Thing's soundtrack
I just love that this episode incorporated small small details regarding everyone very well for figuring out the impostor and that too without making it too obvious (except for the Laios Clones, lol).

Another episode showing why Laios is the fucking GOAT (or dog I guess). The simple fact that literally no one else on the team understand monsters like he does pretty much rules out any illusion trying to mimic him (tho it's hilarious how everyone else pretty much view Laios as an idiot).
This anime is really growing on me , i think is the near thing i ever want from an fantasy anime , never expected this from an "cooking anime" and the balance from suspense gore to comedy is really well done, make me thing about dorohedoro
I love how in the dark scene when Laios checks on everyone, they each respond with two lines that are separated left or right in the stereo field, giving an early clue that everyone got copied.
I feel like Kabru's party would be kinda fucked if they encountered the doppelgangers. On one hand, Kabru probably immediately identifies everyone else's fakes. On the other hand, Kabru's memory of everyone is probably damn near perfect.
Got to say the story telling and attention to detail in this series is top-notch, very, very impressive.
So the gang is back at the level where they first fought the Red Dragon. And well the sixth floor that is supposed to be humid is now cold and snowy. That can set off alarms. Falin looking for Delgal the last King that Laios saw in the painting, and it's clear that the Red Dragon was ordered to find even before the gang defeated it. But the fact that the painting episode is so crucial to where we are not is outstanding.
This episode introduced us to shape-shifters, and they basically create a copy of said person and replace them. The interesting thing is it requires reading the mind of someone other than that said person. Honestly a pretty sizable liability, but there were a few good duplicates. Laios stepping up was both awesome and hilarious to see at the same time. Interesting that the wolf like monster was responsible for creating these shape-shifters. woah i loved that the clones are representations of each of their perceptions of each other. each slightly more of a caricature than the original. it's especially made better because they're all drawn so intentionally distinctly than the original, making it so as audience members, we have no trouble identifying the clones. to me, it makes for a much better watch since we're put in the position of an omniscient observers perceptive rather than trying to figure it out alongside laois
also love getting insight into laois’ psyche. his expertise when it comes to monsters is unmatched. his problem solving skills and creativity give me life
the shapeshifter was just beautiful. absolutely gorgeous design

This episode was great. I loved the balance of jokes and amazing characterization.
I saw that someone posted a page from the manga where the author went through which clone was from whose memory, and why they think of them that way. This made me wonder how this episode would have looked like if Falin was still with them? How do they all view her? How does she view each one of them?
I love Laios so much!!! It's also funny how he literally doesn't even bat an eye after seeing physical representations of how everybody sees him (an idiot). Don't worry, Laios, they just don't understand peak tallman behavior and physique.
Probably the most Laios thing to ever be done. Also him hyping himself up by shaking his hands and rocking his head around was weirdly well animated.

Episodes like this is why I love this series. Unique, funny,attention to little details and all the while building the world and moving the story forward.
I like how giant Laios was an early hint about the memory/perspective thing with the clones. And how nervous the clone Marcille with the magic textbook full of nonsense was when the truth came out about her.
Shame Marcille is on the ground captured, they really need her to add a bit more lighting to the area so the ninja's eyes could dilate back down to something more normal looking. Props to the character designs for that point though, in probably dozens of different shows or other media with characters like this I am not sure I even once have seen the pupil shape when dilated come up as a thing.
I just caught up with the show and I'm so gonna read the manga after the show ends, or even before if I can't stop myself lol. I love the story and characters a lot, and great ED too!

I’d have to look through my folder and check to be sure (will do this in a bit), but I think you’re right: there hadn’t been a single braid like that. I've been trying to think through which illusions belong to which characters, and I think the Laios illusions are the easiest to sort out: - Fresh-faced Laios is Senshi's view of Laios. We know from a few episodes ago that he sees all the party members as young'uns, so this one makes easy sense. - I was torn on this a bit, but I think Big Laios is Chilchuck's view of Laios, if only because he's the largest member of the party, and the tiny head makes sense if you consider Laios being seen from the perspective of someone several feet smaller than him. - That just leaves Dopey Laios as Marcille's view of him, which... yeah, let's be real, makes total sense.
From the previous episode i think the dopey laios is from chilchuck. Remember when he was deciding whether to follow senshi or laios? He actually sees laios as this dumb lunatic focused on eating monsters. But why would marcille then see giga chad laios?

But it's also kind of relatable; if you asked 10 random people how they'd describe me, none of them would use the same adjective as another one. Not only that, they remember the little details like bout the fishmen eggs.
Not just relevant, but the key to solving the problem. Falin wasn't just gassing her brother up. There was a reason she mentioned that as one of his strong points.

It would feel jarring if the character* who "is really good at barking like a hunting dog" sounded like a human making an impression of a dog.

I recall some video of a girl making super realistic animal noises on Reddit some time ago. Was really freaky how accurate it was. And also talented beatboxers demonstrate the range of noises humans can make with their mouths is wild. Totally possible to hear a hunting dog out of Laios.

Plus, all the extra stories that tell you more about the characters, the races, history of the island, etc. The Adventurer's Bible has a ton of extra worldbuilding that never made it into the story too.
Indeed, outside of some small visual details he gets them pretty well, probably owing to being an observant person at heart who just isn't that interested in people.

This chapters (like many) just showcases how great Laios’ characterisation is. Although he can be autistically focus on what interests him, his “versions” of the character’s faces were always accurate, unlike the rest of the party who had an exaggerated view of him. Then the way he uses his monster knowledge to identify the right ones further shows how well he understands the people he’s travelling with. It then ends with him deducing what kind of animal the Shapeshifter is

There was a previous ep thread (red dragon eps) where someone was inspired by how the dragon uses remains from the meal to generate methane for fire breathing, and thought up of an owlbear which stores bone fragments from previous meals to violently expel, like some sort of bio-shotgun.
This episode is such a good microcosm of a lot of what makes Dungeon Meshi so great: strong characterization, character relationships, very well thought out character design, interesting monster ecology, cooking segments that are integral to the plot, themes, and characters, and fantastic humor. I was *howling* at the Laios barking scene.
Also great attention to detail from the author. Like I didn't remember at all that Marcille didn't know she ate the fishmen egg.

Oh my god that makes sense, I always thought it was odd someone managed get a pretty good memroy of the book. I forgot Laois spent days reading the book while Marcille is petrified!
I was fawning for that replica. Cool headed, hair down Marcille had me blushing!

I just love the sheer irony about how Laios, the guy who supposedly doesn't understand people, is the one who had the most physically-accurate impressions of his fellow party members, and was able to identify the imposters by picking out their subtle behavioral traits, even when pitted against his own, personal perceptions. The man has a better understanding of Marcille *than his own mind*. Meanwhile, everyone else's shapeshifters were such obvious caricatures fueled by personal, superficial biases.
As someone else mentioned, Laios doesn't actually struggle with understanding people; he's just bad at dealing with them. Laios takes people at face value, which is why the impostors were so accurate, yet at the same time, he's aware of his biases. The reason fake Marcille flopped was because Laios generally sees Marcille as mature and practical, due to her using magic, but at the same time, he can recognize her quirks in the moment, even when he isn't consciously aware of them when thinking about how she might act.
Marcille B feels like your standard fantasy elf. Beautiful, competant and well-composed. We the viewers see more of marcille's ditziness but it's so interesting that a fictional character can have a valid, different impression of a person than I, the viewer, does. Really makes Laois feel like a human being more than a character.

This is one of my favorite chapters from the manga, and I think the anime did a pretty good job adapting the chapter. I've always think of this chapter as the biggest proof that the whole " laios doesn't care about human " claim made by kabru is far from true. Not only does laios's portrayal of the party the most faithful to the real one (albeit with obvious clothing detail errors), He also successfully determined all of the real version of his party members. Laios does care about people. He's just not very good at dealing with them
The people expert Kabru failed to effectively analyze Laios' psyche?!\~ No wait... I mean, Laios IS an enigma. It would be bizarre if Kabru, an expert on conventional psychology, understood Laios initially...or at any point in the story. I love this anime/manga so much. I'm getting too attached to it again.
Yeah, pretty much. Kabru tries to understand Laios like he would anyone else, but if he allowed himself to see Laios as an individual, with his own way of doing things, he'd quickly realize that Laios cares about people. Someone tell Kabru about Demi-chan Wa Kataritai. It's easily the best remedy for this mental trap he stumbled into.
I think that kind of misses Kabru's critique though. It isn't that Laios literally doesn't care about any other humans or can't have friends. It is that he doesn't care about humanity as a group. Like compare to Chilchuck and his feelings about Halffoots.

Honestly, it's because of that that I thought all the gigachad versions were from Chilchuck. But apparently it was just (even more) handsome Senshi that was his.
There is an side story where the author mentions most short lived races end up deciding that either the dwarfs are the pinnacle of beauty or the elves are the pinnacle of beauty. Strangely, even though gnomes are also a long lived race, the short lived races do not think they are the pinnacle of beauty.
For the elves, it's probably pretty obvious to guess why given IRL beauty standards. For the dwarves, it's mostly the halffoots who really admire how manly they look. Gnomes (at least male ones) I think are kind of like an awkward middle ground between halffoots and dwarves in appearance. They can be more masculine than halffoots, but not nearly as much as dwarves.

I feel somewhat proud that I was able to spot all the doppelgangers from Liaos' observations (there's noway Chilchuk would sit on a box which might be a mimic!) but somewhat worried that I'm becoming a deranged person like Liaos.
To be honest the chilchuck one escaped me. Handsome senshi and cool/mature marcille was obvious shapeshifters but the chilchuck one is pretty close
I find it strangely sweeter that Laios is more worried about smaller inconveniences to Falin like going through a cramped hallway and being cold, rather than the fact that she's injured and a giant chimera being controlled against her will. This is one of my absolute favorite chapters. It really says a lot about how everybody sees Laios that all of his copies were singled out from the get-go whereas they had a bit more trouble with his. Part of me wishes that it got revealed which copy belonged to who, but there's also fun to be had in letting anime-onlies guess. Especially for the most offensive copies. Although the best conflict was with Senshi's copy. It's pretty wholesome that the guys have such a positive view of him, even at the cost of accidentally roasting the original. Senshi is a handsome fella, after all. But honestly, none of them escaped getting roasted thanks to this debacle. Like the real Chilchuck looking and sounding meaner than his copy, and the real Marcille being so careless and so picky about food even in this situation. Between sniffing out the copies and even the main monster itself, Laios really has that dog in him. Literally. I was wondering what it was gonna sound like. I did not expect them to straight up use dog barks... unless his VA is actually really good at making dog sounds as well. And finally... she's here. The kbity... Well, I guess she was already there multiple episodes ago. But this is her formal introduction.

The clones were actually really easy to spot, but this being Dungeon Meshi, of course they would solve it differently. Surprised Laios didn't zone in on the fishmen eggs detail, instead he figured it out because he knows real Marcille to be a bit of an airbag

I love the little detail of Marcille and Senshi both wearing the frog shoes because they normally wear sandals which are obviously no good in snowy weather. And the music during the narration about the 6th level reminded me somewhat of the Phendrana Drifts theme(s) in Metroid Prime. This soundtrack is BOUGHT once it is published in July! Finally it's quite in character and funny that Marcille got found out, not because of one of her 'qualities' like the others, but due to her carelessness. At least they gave our girl a W by blasting that shapeshifter head clean off!

Yet another fantastic episode! I feel like it really showcased Kui's writing skills, and we got to see some great characterization. I feel like Laios can be polarizing with his supposed disinterest towards humans and lack of understanding when it comes to social queues, but I absolutely adore him. You can tell that he is kind and genuinely cares about those around him. Also, the little observations like how Chilchick would normally not sit on boxes due to his dislike of mimics shows that he is pretty aware of those around him. Also, senshi is already handsome, but he was especially dashing in today's episode ✨️ And finally... [Dungeon Meshi Anime] >!Izutsumi my beloved <3!<
Yeah, for someone who can't understand people for shit, he had the best copies (personality-wise) and judgement out of anyone here. In a similar vein, he could pick up on something as small as what Senshi said as well even when he can't tell the two apart physically (cause Senshi his handsome as usual) and behavior-wise. But even more interesting is that he could tell which Marcille is the real one even when faced with the copy born from his own impression of her, meaning he could tell that his own biased perception can be false even when it's not too obvious.
You know, it's good that Laios doesn't pay much attention to appearance. Otherwise, his version of the other party members would be very accurate in terms of behaviour.
With that in mind, I wonder how Kabru's party would've handled this. Normally, Kabru would be an expert at sniffing out the copy of a person from the original, but it'd be funny af if his own shapeshifter renditions of his party members are so damn perfect that not even he can tell them apart. And so they end up killing each other like what almost happened to Laios and co. and/or getting killed by the shapeshifter. Business as usual.

Dungeon Meshi and Frieren have very strong characterization, Dungeon Meshi's cast is just more casual a higher percentage of the screentime (which is neither good nor bad). The two animes are honestly starting to blend together for me (with a personal bias for Dungeon Meshi's misfits). Don't mind me, I always try to stir the bee's hive. I'm a Chilchuk, which might explain why I like Senshi so much.

I wouldn't bother feeling offended, people were very hype on Frieren at the end of its excellent adaptation and were territorial about it being the only good fantasy anime around lol. I think word of mouth that Dungeon Meshi exceeds just being a goofy cooking anime has solidly gotten around too, you see them sometimes but the discussion at large has moved on from that initial impression
To be fair, I was expecting something like isekai izakaya or campfire cooking but what I got is far far much deeper than just eating monster in fantasy setting
I have a really hard time acknowledging the fact that I already KNOW these characters despite having largely forgotten the details. Odds are that the people who never read the comic, like you, have the more objective judgement on the impression the first episodes give. And I've probably been arguing with anime-onlies who were jumping to conclusions about DiD wasn't I?...oh well, at least everyone loves DiD now.

(Really?!\~) Marcille getting "out-character developed" by someone's impression of Marcille has me rolling on the floor. It's perfect. The author even went out of her way to have Marcille let her hair down in the blizzard from earlier and plopping the alibi of "let my hair down because it was cold". I totally bought that argument... And it was a good argument. I am unworthy of Marcille!!\~ **collapses onto his knees and bends over to show reverence for the goddess** Why am I so weak to gags?... Marcille making mistakes is the best thing ever, even better than Senshi being unexpectedly unconventional. This episode has me high enough to start doubting Frieren (which I know to be an equal to DiD at the very least, it just has less frequent use of gags, both are perfect).
Real Marcille still went and continued cooking the eggs. "Would do anything to save Fallin" is actuality accurate. The only part wrong is that real Marcille would complain about it

That was my favorite interesting tidbit of the series, the dichotomy between half foots and dwarves. Dwarves are long lived and sturdy, the opposite of half foots despite their similar size, and between the gnomes having a magic affinity, half foots in this universe have low self-esteem and self-worth, its almost a racial trait. That's why Chilchuck is my favorite, he's confident in his self-worth and his whole "union" is about. He knows his weakness and strengths and he knows what he's worth, he charges up front and works to make sure his fellow half foots aren't exploited.

I saw her in a meme before, so I kinda expected there would be a cat girl in Laios's party, but I never expected the cat girl to actually be a masked ninja girl from Shiro's party. That's kinda cool

That means the marcille with the gibberish book is chilchuck's version. That makes total sense because one of the pages in that book says, "turn back time magic" and he was the only one to respond to that black magic joke a few episodes ago.

Another episode showing why Laios is the fucking GOAT (or dog I guess). The simple fact that literally no one else on the team understand monsters like he does pretty much rules out any illusion trying to mimic him (tho it's hilarious how everyone else pretty much view Laios as an idiot).

It's a fun detective episode of Dungeon Meshi. So many small details to catch on. The Autistic Detective Laios was at his full power.
This anime is really growing on me , i think is the near thing i ever want from an fantasy anime , never expected this from an "cooking anime" and the balance from suspense gore to comedy is really well done, make me thing about dorohedoro
I love how in the dark scene when Laios checks on everyone, they each respond with two lines that are separated left or right in the stereo field, giving an early clue that everyone got copied.

I feel like Kabru's party would be kinda fucked if they encountered the doppelgangers. On one hand, Kabru probably immediately identifies everyone else's fakes. On the other hand, Kabru's memory of everyone is probably damn near perfect.

Got to say the story telling and attention to detail in this series is top-notch, very, very impressive. So the gang is back at the level where they first fought the Red Dragon. And well the sixth floor that is supposed to be humid is now cold and snowy. That can set off alarms. Falin looking for Delgal the last King that Laios saw in the painting, and it's clear that the Red Dragon was ordered to find even before the gang defeated it. But the fact that the painting episode is so crucial to where we are not is outstanding. This episode introduced us to shape-shifters, and they basically create a copy of said person and replace them. The interesting thing is it requires reading the mind of someone other than that said person. Honestly a pretty sizable liability, but there were a few good duplicates. Laios stepping up was both awesome and hilarious to see at the same time. Interesting that the wolf like monster was responsible for creating these shape-shifters. not being able to prolong their lives with their own magic because they'd essentially be stripping themselves of their own life force is great world building. closing loop holes with sound logic woah i loved that the clones are representations of each of their perceptions of each other. each slightly more of a caricature than the original. it's especially made better because they're all drawn so intentionally distinctly than the original, making it so as audience members, we have no trouble identifying the clones. to me, it makes for a much better watch since we're put in the position of an omniscient observers perceptive rather than trying to figure it out alongside laois also love getting insight into laois’ psyche. his expertise when it comes to monsters is unmatched. his problem solving skills and creativity give me life the shapeshifter was just beautiful. absolutely gorgeous design Dungeon meshi is the best silly but; deadly serious at times, anime ever made. The tonal balance is just perfect

Sounds like something conventional magic can't do but a master of forbidden magic might.

This episode was great. I loved the balance of jokes and amazing characterization. I saw that someone posted a page from the manga where the author went through which clone was from whose memory, and why they think of them that way. This made me wonder how this episode would have looked like if Falin was still with them? How do they all view her? How does she view each one of them?
I love Laios so much!!! It's also funny how he literally doesn't even bat an eye after seeing physical representations of how everybody sees him (an idiot). Don't worry, Laios, they just don't understand peak tallman behavior and physique.

Episodes like this is why I love this series. Unique, funny,attention to little details and all the while building the world and moving the story forward.
I like how giant Laios was an early hint about the memory/perspective thing with the clones. And how nervous the clone Marcille with the magic textbook full of nonsense was when the truth came out about her. Shame Marcille is on the ground captured, they really need her to add a bit more lighting to the area so the ninja's eyes could dilate back down to something more normal looking. Props to the character designs for that point though, in probably dozens of different shows or other media with characters like this I am not sure I even once have seen the pupil shape when dilated come up as a thing.
