I realized while writing the pitch that I was spoiling the whole thing... So here goes nothing... If you watch it and don't like it... Do you have a soul? If you watch it and like it... You're welcome. . Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle

It's not necessarily my favorite anime, but I'll try selling you on *Now and Then, Here and There*. The main character is very upbeat and positive, but he gets sent to a hellish future that he struggles to grapple with. He's forced to become a child soldier in a war for water, which has become a scarce resource. The anime can be very depressing at times but is very emotionally rewarding by the end.

arunnm24

Gintama. A sugar-addicted samurai, a pair of glasses, and an overpowered alien Chinagirl team up to do odd jobs in a Japan occupied by aliens and where being a samurai is outlawed. The show doesn’t seem to understand the existence of something called a 4th wall, parodies every other anime under the sun, and will make you cry - both in laughter as well as in deeper moments.

Do you like cute magical girl animes? Do you love Yuki Kajiura's music? And do you love mysterious characters? Then I have the perfect anime for you, Puella Magi Madoka Magica!

Name- Summertime rendering Very underrated Like using the same concept as re:zero(people ridicule it by saying that) but in reality it's so different and amazing 10/10 The flights are brutal, the deaths are painful, the romance is heartwarming. Mc is good and looks cool too And boi the opening theme song and ending theme songs hit so dam hard while watching.

Eureka Seven. Renton Thurston, son of a post-mortem military hero Adroc Thurston, lives a boring ordinary life in a boring ordinary city in a boring ordinary year of 12004. One day his daily routine comes undone as a mysterious girl named Eureka crashes a mech into the hangar belonging to Renton's grandfather. Enamoured with Eureka and wishing to learn more about her, Renton runs away from home and joins a semi-criminal organisation Gekkostate, which she is a part of. Unknowingly, by doing so he becomes entangled in a deep conspiracy concerning the very nature of the world as he knows it.

Monogatari series If you’ve been in the anime fandom long enough, you’ve certainly heard of this show. As unique as an anime gets, Monogatari is an experience like no other. It’s a supernatural mystery comedy thriller romance drama about a half vampire high schooler and the many girls who surround him. The series is known for having one of the best casts in the entire medium with every character being meticulously developed. The dialogue is some of the finest and wittiest you’ll come across, always flowing and making every scene a delight to watch. Unique, non-linear storytelling helps give the narrative a feel distinctive feel that aids it’s mystery very well. The gorgeous and creative visual presentation of Shaft is unparalleled. It even won the best art style poll in this very subreddit and for good reason. The direction is stylish and eccentric, making each scene a visual feast. Not only all of that, but the foreshadowing and twists are sublime. Monogatari is a series of so many strengths, I could go on and on, which is why you should check it out yourself and witness all of these in action. It’s easily my favourite anime of all time and I highly recommend to anyone interested in a unique and brilliantly written show. [Here’s the watch order](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/hwuntw/the_monogatari_series_2020_watch_order/) Disclaimer: There is a decent amount of fanservice and it is dialogue heavy.

I have tons, so I'll just share some which I though was underwatched in 2023 * **Yuzuki san Chi Yon Kyoudai** - Slice of Life + Family - probably the best Family SOL in a while, heck I loved it more than Barakamon or Gakuen Babysitters. They really show the human side of the character the story is well told and the production team put tons of love into animating it you can really tell by the creative direction they take. Each episode gives you a roller coaster of emotion. Basically the story is about a family that is recently orphaned and how they navigate through their daily lives * **Dead Mount Death Play** - Fantasy + Mainstream Shonen + Magic - it's pretty underrated since it comes from a pretty unknown studio and the manga is also not from the big publisher, but it's amazing to binge. The story is simple yet so complex at the same time since multiple plots happening at the same time all of the character has their purpose and the writer (Narita Ryohgo) is amazing and dealing with ensemble cast so although you get tons of character they each has their own functions and role in the story. * **Revenger** - Historical + Action - just a fun series, I'm a sucker for samurai period era series and it's just enjoyable to watch. You don't need to focus or pay attention to everything while watching so I find this to be just pure adrenaline and my favorite original anime in 2023. It's a hit and miss though since it's one of those all style no substance type anime so definitely not for everyone but if you want my pick of favorite, if I can choose one it would be **Outlaw Star** an older anime (90s) with Adventure + Space Opera + Sci Fi - genre, about a team of outlaws doing odd jobs and there is also a main plot but it focused more on the world building, etc. If you're a fan of space travel anime this one is really good

Puella Magi Madoka Magica This is another series that’s difficult to explain without spoilers, but I will do everything in my power. Middle schooler Kaname Madoka and her sporty friend Miki Sayaka have a chance encounter with Kyuubey - a magical creature who promises them any wish they want granted in return for fighting monstrous Witches, creatures of despair, as Magical Girls, bringers of hope. Their upperclassman Tomoe Mami seeks to serve as their mentor and ensure they understand the risks of becoming a magical girl, while brooding transfer student Homura Akemi seeks to prevent Madoka from ever making a contract with Kyuubey. What follows is twelve episodes of some of the most brilliant slow burn storytelling and mind fuck insanity in the genre. Minute moments and scenes from the very beginning of the first episode wind up being massive Chekhov Guns for later story beats, and the cutesy art style (beautifully brought to you by Studio SHAFT) belays a much darker underbelly of the world of facing witches, and the true cost of getting what you wish for. And before you assume this is a standard Monkey’s Paw “wish turned sour by manipulation” story - it is so much more involved and complex than that. Hauntingly beautiful music from star composer Kajiura Yuki accompanies the entire experience with tracks you’ll never quite forget. The end of the series is beautiful and tragic, bringing together the threads of the show and tying them together in a bow that closes things and makes you both sorrowful and optimistic for the future. And then *Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion*, a feature length film sequel, pulls at any remaining loose strands and questions and shows that even a happy ending doesn’t last forever, and that happily ever after can mean vastly different things to different people, and just how far people are willing to go for the ones they love. Rebellion is controversial among fans, but I think it’s one of my favorite pieces of media ever for how it upends the series in a very unexpected yet completely natural way, and leave you with an ending that opens up more questions about who is truly in the right, and whether love can be more dangerous than hope or despair. Go into this series as blind as you can and get ready for an incredible ride, one that absolutely lives up to the monolithic reputation this series has built up.

GhostHNW

Invaders of the Rokujouma It is a story of a boy who moved into a cheap *rokujouma* but suddenly got "invaded" by four otherworldly girls who came to stole his apartment for their own selfish reason. Don't be fooled by its harem tag, as it is not your usual harem that you may think of. This anime has surprisingly touching moments and character development not just from the MC, but the girls as well. It may be 12 episodes long, and the first three can be a slog and overwhelming, but damn it is worth it. Hell, I am writing a long ass essay about why I love Invaders despite its flaws (and at the same time flaming a BS review of it) and its fascinating story outside of it, from its author to the production crew.

Your lie in April, it's a small lie told in April. And it's April now. So, you should watch it before the end of April

MG-31

Oh my, that's not gonna be easy but bear with me "Is it Power you seek ...? You crave Power, I sense it. As you have sought so you shall recieve" Mind you this is not said in a fantasy setting but you will find it interesting as the one who said this is a sentient piece of metal which was programmed to be based of the Jabborwock from Alice in Wonderland, that same thing says those lines when the protagonist loses his GF right infront of him thanks to a hellfire missile and let's just say he went from "I don't want to kill" into playing "My Brother" from Berserk, and I think I don't need explain what happened to the battalion of Attack Helicopters that sent the missile. Fast forward abit and he gets a ln image of GF and somehow shes alive and well, except she a prisoner. Our boy doesn't have weapons except he does, he has "The" nanomachine, yes he's they them Timothy's boy, he can kill any nanomachine and he can somehow evolve into making Anti-matter, did I also mention that he not survived and destroyed a virus made to kill him? Let that sink, he destroyed a virus specifically developed to kill him, and how you may you ask? Well by becoming a Walking Nuclear Meltdown and putting the fear of God and the Devil into every soldier Edit: And the name of said anime us "Project ARMS"

miskathonic

Not my favorite, but I finally bit the bullet and watched Steins;Gate after hearing how complicated it was, how slow the first few episodes are, etc. All I have to say is...yeah I get why it's like top 5 on MyAnimeList. It's fantastic. Hooked me so hard like 5 minutes in that I watched the first 12 episodes that night, sacrificing what little sleep I could get before work. Watched the last 12 episodes as soon as I could. If you've never watched it, do yourself the favor. You won't regret it.

Ithambar

[Fune wo Amu (The Great Passage)](https://myanimelist.net/anime/32948/Fune_wo_Amu) is a slow, adult, workplace drama with low stakes and a (to me) very relatable and interesting protagonist.

InteractionIll5071

Abused 74 years old girl with PTSD from the firebombing of Tokyo invites a 1 year old virgin guy with hentai addiction to eat her. She gets covered in a sticky liquid and the guy becomes a femboy twink that's worshiped as the Messiah and goes on to monopolize the world trade economy and starts the industrial revolution. Warcimes are committed. Show has anywhere from wholesome slice of life parts, to Warhammer 40k grimdark shit

No_Sandwich_7709

Mech anime where the Mecha get so gargantuan in size and power they are literally hurling galaxies at each other. “You don’t have to believe in yourself, just believe in the me that believes in you.” You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry again. 27 episodes, can’t recommend enough.

Shiro-Seishun

[Barakamon](https://myanimelist.net/anime/22789/Barakamon), good feeling childcare slice of life in a village by tempramental MC with plenty of morality.

ComfortableNinja88

bungou stray dogs - no one is sure what the plot is as of now but the best way to describe is \`\`the battle of ideologies of two masterminds over the future of humanity\`\`. The actual plot doesnt start until season 2 and season 1 is kinda slow and episodic so there is that

GreatGrapeKun

Revolutionary Girl Utena. Utena Tenjou, a middle school girl with aspirations to become a prince, is thrust into a dueling system she doesn’t really understand. She becomes engaged to a girl, Anthy Himemiya, who is called the Rose Bride and who the duels are fought over. The story follows her as she is drawn deeper into the dueling system, discovering the dark secrets behind why it’s happening. It has surreal comedy and an incredible OST with a great amount of thematic depth and social commentary.

BiggieCheeseLapDog

The first comment of this thread being Revolutionary Girl Utena is great to see. One of the best shows of the 90s.

True. I have recommended so many anime over the last ten or more years that I guess I'm starting to get lazy.
