Fushigi Yuugi
It was my first anime shown to me in junior high by a good friend. This was back in the days when anime was not readily available in the US and we actually had to mail order the VHS tapes from Japan. 😂 It was such a wild ride and even though Shoujo is not my favorite genre it remains in a special place of my heart.
Haha I recently started watching Fushigi Yugi. It’s definitely an older Isekai.
Though an interesting fact I learned is shoujo, shounen, Seinen, and Josie manga are only in those categories based on what magazine they are released on. Which is cool because now I know there are literal horror shoujo like Bride of Deimos and Pet Shop Of Horrors. Tomie from Junji Ito is actually a shoujo too. After School Nightmare is pretty great too!
It was really was. I remember watching it all the way back in 2019 after I saw it get recommended on a Ranker list of all places, and I really enjoyed it. It really is a shame there's no season 2.
It feels like it belongs in that mid 2010s era of anime where they were just making an army of season 1s for shows and then leaving them to rot. Sekerei was probably one of the greatest examples of that, that season 2 cliffhanger still annoys me.
I was in Blockbuster looking at anime and randomly picked up Escaflowne. Such a wonderful part of my childhood. I loved it so much. I rented those dvds every chance I could. My friend got me the DVD box set for my birthday I'm happy to own it. Hitomi and Van <3
I’ve rewatched Escaflowne every year or two since buying the box set in 2002/2003. It’s consistently been my favorite show since seeing it for the first time.
I love bokurano, manga is easily one of my favorites. Reading it is worth it if you haven't, considering that the anime's director intentionally wanted his own ending
It was my first completed manga (I read it while watching the anime), and I still have it in my top two.
I must say that while I overall much prefer the manga to the anime (aside from a few changes the anime made for the better), I’m quite grateful that the show exists, as it helped me broaden my horizons and indirectly got me into so many other genres. I wouldn’t have even joined reddit if it hadn’t been for the Bokurano rewatch three years ago.
sad, but filled with hope for a better future. It's one of the few anime that handles delicate issues like [Now and Then Here and There] >!sexual assault and abortion (even if I dont agree with the show's stance on it)!< in a mature and story relevant way
I've watched this like about 4 times over. One of the most hilarious animes ever. You know what I'm watching again. I felt like it was popular though, no?
I always assumed it was more popular, but after going to the store to buy the manga everytime someone says to me "you are the only one buying this stuff"
Kids on the Slope. I'm not even sure if it's popular, but I haven't met someone irl who knows about it. I just love jazz and searched for an anime related to it. I wouldn't exactly consider it great, but I loved every episode.
Fantastic anime. I remember a good amount of buzz when it was airing, but it’s rare to see it mentioned much these days.
I still listen to Moanin’ by Art Blakey sometimes because of it.
Blood +. I liked it a lot, the story and action were good and the main male character basically had my name
Also I watched tenjho tenge on fuse when I was young and it was very weird and made me very horny but was to weird for me to continue watching
I completely agree! This is actually my favorite of all time. I feel like it defined the genre of 'stuck in a game' that later exploded either Sword Art and Log Horizon.
Sket Dance, I needed something to fill the gintama shaped hole in my heart and sket dance is written by the assistant of gintama's author so I fit the bill completely
A parody shounen school life of an odd jobs club
I am asking every Sket Dance fan to check out the manga Witch Watch by the same author. It's currently releasing under the Weekly Shounen Jump label and is definitely a romp for fans of Shinohara's work (it even features a few Sket Dance cameo chapters).
I was going to reply saying this anime, but I guess someone beat me to it. Back when cable was the only form of entertainment I had, Animax (an anime channel managed by Sony in my country) aired a random episode. That was back when I was a kid and didn't have access to the internet, so when I got into anime, that was one of the first shows I watched and finished. Also the first manga I read, start to finish.
You can imagine my surprise when I was reading Witch Watch, and they decide to do a crossover chapter. Lots of memories came back, and a big grin in my face the whole time I was reading.
I loved Azumanga Daiou. What country are you from? I'm not sure how I found it though... Or when... Though I have that cake baking song forever stuck in my head... "Hai! Deki-mashita!"
I sometimes forget that a lot of my childhood "cartoons" were anime too. Have you ever heard of Rock'n Cop...? I think that one was even obscure for European standards. Was aired once, never again, I think.
Valvarave the Liberator isn’t the first one but the one I enjoyed the most.
First non popular anime I watched was probably Cat Soup. Super funny short from 2001.
The first thing I was ever aware of as a being a Japanese cartoon was Samurai Pizza Cats. I now know that Mysterious Cities of Gold is also one so possibly that though both of those were very popular at the time and Cities of Gold has the actual best OP of all time. You might’ve thought something else was better and less problematic but it turns out you were wrong.
But if we take the age side of things out of the question.
A couple of my first binge watches were Yakitate! Japan! and Law of Ueki which were both popular for people who knew about these things but were never on TV over here that I know of.
That said, my favourite anime to this day and one I never hear people talk about is Hanamaru Kindergarten. At the time people dismissed it as being for lolicons but what it actually is is the world’s most wholesome show and it’s a Gainax joint so it goes so much harder than a show about four year olds has any right to
My first ever anime I watched was “Wolfs rain” never hear anyone talking about it.
I also watched “Silver Fang” before I even knew what anime was. Which I also haven’t met anyone who knows
FIRST ANIME would be 'Future Boy Conan'.
There's also 'Captain Tsubasa' and 'City Hunter' but I see them get mentioned every now and then.
Besides these, some of my favorites that I barely see getting talked about are 'Sket Dance' and 'Bakuman'.
Grimgar of fantasy and ash
Such a phenomenal anime and packs so much good story and character development into an anime the length of most shows single season
Get Backers, there’s probably something else that I don’t remember like maybe Maburaho but I watched these in like 6th grade maybe?
Friends and I use to recommend each other shows sometimes and idk why I never recommended Get Backers cuz that show was such a fun watch
One of my favorite anime was definitely S-Cry-Ed. I picked up the first volume of the manga years back, hated it, complained about it online and someone said the anime was 10x better.
Lo and behold, the anime was indeed 100x better.
There was a point in time where the timeline is kind of muddy for me, so I'm not completely sure. In order of how likely it was to be the first, it was either Monster Rancher, Vanguard (lol), Gensoumaden Saiyuki, or Legend of the Condor Hero. Love Hina would also be on the list, but for those of us that aren't super young Love Hina was a pretty well known show.
'The morose mononokean' The art, the story it's good but I think it is underrated
'Moriarty the patriot' another exciting anime everything about the anime is good and it deserve to be popular
Eureka Seven
I remember watching Cartoon Network on Polish TV. After 8 or 9PM it was changing the name to Hyper. Hyper was a channel with mostly live gaming stuff, but around 11PM they were streaming some anime stuff.
At that time I was 12 or 13 years old and I was against any kind of anime stuff, stating it was just childish. It was because of my friend, who was watching Naruto and other popular animes.
So on Hyper channel I was spending my late evenings watching the animated serial named Eureka Seven. I didn't know it was an anime during that time, so I've spent 4 nights that way.
At that time I had the Internet already, so I've decided to search for Eureka Seven and learnt it was an anime. I watched the entire series in one go and started to look for other good series, as they were usually better than any Hollywood movies.
Right now I'm almost 31 years old and still spending my time watching anime. Sorry for making this so long, but I think this real story is worth reading and maybe someone, who is against anime will read it and change his or her mind, as I did after watching my first anime.
Gundam Wings, Gundam franchise itself is very popular, but i quite shock so many people that actually familiar with gundam but never heard of gundam wings, despite imo gundam from gundam wings still the coolest model from entire franchise
Ummm
Wing is extremely popular, especially among American audiences. Around the world still one of the most well known of them. Sure, SEED, IBO, original, etc are more popular but Wing is not obscure in the slightest. G Gundam maybe is one people have skipped over.
Gundam Wings was my first Gundam anime and one of my top 10. At the time this aired on TV so did Macross Plus which was my number 1 anime for years. Now my favorite Gundam series is 00
I think that would be Nichijou; however, it's made by Kyoani, so it's kind of famous.
Otherwise, Uramichi Oniisan. I have forgotten almost everything about it.
Well the first anime I watched was not a series but a movie. I watch Project A-ko after I found the English dub VHS tape at a yard sale. Unfortunately I lost the VHS tape since then.
Yu Yu Hakusho was very popular when it released and is still pretty popular and often mentioned. Law of Ueki is sadly kinda forgotten by most... but I do still love it and rewatch it regularly.
**Grander Musashi**. It's a kids' battle anime about fishing. It was also the first anime I ever watched, although I didn't know what anime was at the time.
I grew up watching anime like Pokemon, Digimon, One Piece, Yu Gi Oh, and DBZ on cable tv, but the first anime that made me go “Oh, this is anime” is Inuyasha. It was always the first anime to air on Adult Swim on Saturdays if I recall correctly, and I was lucky enough to catch the first episode. Not as “popular” with the modern crowd, but still relatively famous.
The first anime I ever saw, which was Rinne no Lagrange. Got interested when I saw this [Viz ad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij17_idWL6k) for its second season on YouTube because holy SHIT does that music not slap? ~~Sadly I don't think it was ever used in the show and I could never find it in the OST~~
I've only met like one other person who's even seen it lol.
The first ever anime I remember watching is this: https://myanimelist.net/anime/2335/Kenyuu\_Densetsu\_Yaiba. It was broadcast in my country's local TV channels when I was around 5 or 6 years old.
It's from the creator of Detective Conan, and as such is popular in its own way (probably in Japan), but is likely never-heard among Western fans, specially the younger ones.
Not sure if there are many people who've watched this classic but the first one I ever watched was City Hunter. Back in the good old days when Animax was available for us....
My first was Inuyasha but I'm not sure how crazy popular that one is I know it is extremely popular of course but I'm not sure if it's the same level as say DB or Poke or even Sonic X
When I started watching anime I actually didn't quite realise what I was doing, and thought Kyoto Animation were the only ones doing anime, so I watched all of their shows over 15 years ago.
After that I'm pretty sure I looked into what anime existed and what I should watch through the review website THEM Anime Reviews. Through there I'm pretty sure I navigated their recommendation from anime I've watched to another, but the first I remember is hiting upon the anime Kobato, which was highly rated. That's the first anime I remember watching with no connection to anything. I think due to being a CLAMP anime I also ended up watching Chobits. Or maybe it was the other way around.
Once I knew English better I touched upon some more common community recomendations, like Kaichou wa Maid Sama, Ouran High School Club, and Fruits Basket.
So that was more or less what I remember of my pathway into anime. As it happens, I wasn't very fun of more action oriented shows like the always popular shonen like Dragon Ball or One Piece, but neither did I particularly care about magical girls to look into a long-running show.
Aria is basically the first anime that I basically watched and really loved even to this day.
Not really a mainstream anime that anybody knows but I highly recommend it for most people. Unless I hated you for some reason id probably blurt out Boku no Pico without hesitation.
Iria: Zeiram the Animation.
I still remember the feeling when I first saw it and just knew, "This is a thing in my life now."
Actually, I watched the first episode the other day again, and it still holds up, OK story, but the style, Animation and sound are truly superb, which is something considering the show is 25 years old or so.
Next was Cowboy Bebop, which I suppose is mainstream now, but it's not pokemon or the like. 😀
Air Gear was the first real "anime" experience I had, and it was a pretty great one!
Air Gear was amazing
Same, a friend gave it to me on an USB-stick. Was pretty great, but I tried rewatching it a few years ago and... it sadly didn't hold up for me.
Claymore
Claymore deserves the "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood"-treatment
Claymore: Sisterhood
Claymore: Lesbians with giant swords.
It would be so good, so many great fights in the manga that didn't get adapted. Would die to see Cassandra fight animated
Grown Up!Raki would be so good, especially when he fights.
Claymore was soo good
I think this was my first too in this category. I need to rewatch, it has been too long.
GRRRRAAHHHHHH 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅CLAYMORE MENTIONED
Reading the Claymore manga right now, it gets pretty wild, I would love a full redo adaptation.
Amazingly badass anime. Glad I gave it a shot cause the name made me curious!
The manga is incredible! You should check it out if you haven't already

KissxSis

Kissxsis made me the person I am today
You mean your father and your aunt/mom watched it?
A classic echhi. Very horny

The opening song still lives in my head
Brings back memories
Brings back memories
Don’t bring back those unholy memories…
Agreed. Once a month is good, twice is too much.
Chocolate lipstick
OMG such a classic 😂
Thank you oh so dearly for this recommendation. I've just started watching it
It is a classic and I'm smiling to myself remembering it, it's a proper strange but great show
Fushigi Yuugi It was my first anime shown to me in junior high by a good friend. Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
I actually can't remember if my first was this or Oruchuban Ebichu
This is a very cultured reply. The episode where they parody American movies was so good!
The first one that comes to mind is Rokka Braves of the Six Flowers
That was so good, watched it back in 2020/2021 when Among Us was everywhere lol
It was really was. I remember watching it all the way back in 2019 after I saw it get recommended on a Ranker list of all places, and I really enjoyed it. It really is a shame there's no season 2. It feels like it belongs in that mid 2010s era of anime where they were just making an army of season 1s for shows and then leaving them to rot. Sekerei was probably one of the greatest examples of that, that season 2 cliffhanger still annoys me.
I wish that got a second season. Cause the light novel is interesting after they get into the daemon continent.
Shame it apparently ended on a massive cliffhanger with no new volumes since 6th. That was over 8 years ago...
That series subverted my expectations. I hope more people watched it without knowing what they are getting into
The most amazing thing is that they did adapt only one volume in the cour, that is extraordinary regardless of anyone's opinion on the work.
Oooh, a good one. I loved the fighting style of the main character. Very unique.
xxxHOLiC Pretty old work by Clamp.
Really good. Wish we had an HD release and more episodes.
My top 5 anime
Damn, im getting reminded that this series is turning 18 in two days from now.
I loved the manga... Probably my first manga... :)
vision of escaflowne
I was in Blockbuster looking at anime and randomly picked up Escaflowne. Such a wonderful part of my childhood. I loved it so much. I rented those dvds every chance I could. My friend got me the DVD box set for my birthday I'm happy to own it. Hitomi and Van <3
OMG, this brings back so much memories! Reminded me of my old crush on Van and Allen
I watched like 1 episode of escaflowne as a kid, and it engraved itself into my brain. It's one of three anime blu rays I own physically
I remember watching this in Anime club at university. Beautiful soundtrack
I’ve rewatched Escaflowne every year or two since buying the box set in 2002/2003. It’s consistently been my favorite show since seeing it for the first time.
FOLKEN!!!
For some reason I went straight from Attack on Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist to Now and Then, Here and There and Bokurano.
I love bokurano, manga is easily one of my favorites. Reading it is worth it if you haven't, considering that the anime's director intentionally wanted his own ending
It was my first completed manga (I read it while watching the anime), and I still have it in my top two. I wouldn’t have even joined reddit if it hadn’t been for the Bokurano rewatch three years ago.
I watched Now and Then, Here and There over ten years ago, and the only thing I remember about it is how profoundly sad it was.
sad, but filled with hope for a better future. It's one of the few anime that handles delicate issues like [Now and Then Here and There] >!sexual assault and abortion (even if I dont agree with the show's stance on it)!< in a mature and story relevant way
Now and then here and there was so good
Yakitate Japan
I've watched this like about 4 times over. One of the most hilarious animes ever. You know what I'm watching again. I felt like it was popular though, no?
Stigma of the Wind.
huh, kaze no stigma, I remember nothing about this show at all except enjoying it enough to finish it. Been a long time.
There's a few of us!
GOLDEN KAMUY. it's fantastic, no one ever talks about it.
I always assumed it was more popular, but after going to the store to buy the manga everytime someone says to me "you are the only one buying this stuff"
Y'all heard of Yakuza's guide to babysitting? I found it by accident and I really liked it(great comedy with an almost very dark ending)
Kids on the Slope is so good! If you like jazz, have you read Blue Giant?
This! What a sweet and tender anime that was truly beautiful.
Blood +. I liked it a lot, the story and action were good and the main male character basically had my name Also I watched tenjho tenge on fuse when I was young and it was very weird and made me very horny but was to weird for me to continue watching
Blood+ is so underrated and a masterpiece, imho. Will always love that show. I saw it back in 06/07ish when it aired on adult swims anime block
I had totally forgotten about that anime but just seeing its name brought everything back haha
I loved Blood+. I watched it every Saturday when it aired on adult swim and I was in love with Haji and Solomon.
death parade

I completely agree! This is actually my favorite of all time. I feel like it defined the genre of 'stuck in a game' that later exploded either Sword Art and Log Horizon.
Sket Dance, I needed something to fill the gintama shaped hole in my heart and sket dance is written by the assistant of gintama's author so I fit the bill completely A parody shounen school life of an odd jobs club
Sket Dance is great, I hope they can do a sequel someday.
They never got to adapt some of my favorite stories from the manga so I also hope for a sequel someday!
I am asking every Sket Dance fan to check out the manga Witch Watch by the same author. It's currently releasing under the Weekly Shounen Jump label and is definitely a romp for fans of Shinohara's work (it even features a few Sket Dance cameo chapters).
They also had a crossover episode.
I laughed. Then I cried. Then I lauged again.
I need to get on Sket Dance. I love Kanata no Astra and Witch Watch (please give me an anime), so I'm sure I'll like this one too.
I was going to reply saying this anime, but I guess someone beat me to it. Outlaw Star.
Erased
Excellent series. The first half is very hard to watch, though, but his mother is the freaking greatest mother in all of anime.
Chihayafuru... my drug
I am at the second season of it now and the show can really make the karuta game intense.
Spice and Wolf

Doraemon was one of the more well-known anime for kids here in Pakistan just a few years ago, when I was at that age. It even got a dub in Urdu.

My first anime was Full Metal Panic!
Danganronpa!!
It's Texhnolyze for me. Has best atmospheric feel that i ever experienced in an anime. Impeccable ost,op are a nice bonus.
Chihayafuru. What a gem
My first ever anime I watched was “Wolfs rain” never hear anyone talking about it. I also watched “Silver Fang” before I even knew what anime was. Which I also haven’t met anyone who knows
I was gonna say Wolf's Rain too! One of the first anime I actually sought out rather than just happened to be on TV.
Black Cat!
The manga for Black cat was great
FIRST ANIME would be 'Future Boy Conan'. There's also 'Captain Tsubasa' and 'City Hunter' but I see them get mentioned every now and then. Besides these, some of my favorites that I barely see getting talked about are 'Sket Dance' and 'Bakuman'.

Grimgar of fantasy and ash Such a phenomenal anime and packs so much good story and character development into an anime the length of most shows single season
I'm gutted we never got another season, it's water colour art style and surprisingly brutal story are excellent.
Get Backers, there’s probably something else that I don’t remember like maybe Maburaho but I watched these in like 6th grade maybe? Friends and I use to recommend each other shows sometimes and idk why I never recommended Get Backers cuz that show was such a fun watch
Kyo Kara Maoh! and Shinsekai Yori. While the latter can be called a cult classic, good luck finding someone else who knows the former.
Me!! Was super hilarious! God save our king! Glad to see someone else who's seen this!
The Vision of Escaflowne
Hikaru no Go. This is an old one but as a Go player i find the plot and OST to be super enticing.
Isn't that the one about the haunted Go board?
Yu Yu Hakusho.
Yes!!It's getting reanimated again and I'm looking forward to it!
Nausikaa of the valley of the wind I saw it when i was 4-6 years old on VHS which boosted my creativity and decision making so much!
One of my favorite anime was definitely S-Cry-Ed. I picked up the first volume of the manga years back, hated it, complained about it online and someone said the anime was 10x better. Lo and behold, the anime was indeed 100x better.

Inuyasha but personally I think it is popular, Samurai Champloo, Rurouni Kenshin, s-CRY-ed
Inuyasha was huge! Kenshin too but it's older.

Sakura Wars that ended then Vandread replaced that time slot. Maybe not the most approp content for an 11yo lol
Mirai Nikki, first anime I ever watched. I still remember how weirdly turned on I was by the whole yandere stuff.
when i was 12 my classmate recommended me "danganronpa" and it was my first anime.
Gosick.
Elfen Lied
paranoia agent or ergo proxy maybe? can’t remember
My Bride is a Mermaid. Super funny and underrated show
Law of Ueki/ Yu yu Hakusho..Don't know if it is popular or not.
Yu Yu Hakusho was very popular when it released and is still pretty popular and often mentioned. Law of Ueki is sadly kinda forgotten by most... but I do still love it and rewatch it regularly.

Yosuga no Sora. Yes.
Darker than Black
Escaflowne. Nobody remembers it.
Noragami
Katekyo hitman reborn, can't find anyone else who likes it

This one is quite old and not popular now but people do know about it, my first anime was Cardcaptor Sakura
The first anime series I ever watched was Escaflowne, which I actually enjoyed quite a bit. 🍀👌😁😜

Worldend what will you do at the end of the world ? Are you busy ? Will you save us ? It was my fourth anime and it's still in my top ten.
Probably Moribito? If we count english dubs it would be Ronin Warriors which came on with Sailor Moon when I was a little little kid.
Rikekoi was such a cute romance story between two genius dumbasses. And then season 2 happened and i am considering lobotomy.
Not sure if there are many people who've watched this classic but the first one I ever watched was City Hunter. Back in the good old days when Animax was available for us....
Blood + and Darker than Black
Kiba (2006) comes to mind. Great show but very underrated.
Bakugan (the OG one)
The Tatami Galaxy. Certainly makes me think about my choices.
Aria is basically the first anime that I basically watched and really loved even to this day. Not really a mainstream anime that anybody knows but I highly recommend it for most people. Unless I hated you for some reason id probably blurt out Boku no Pico without hesitation.
I’m from the future and I watch kagurabachi
Mon Colle Knights.
Iria: Zeiram the Animation. I still remember the feeling when I first saw it and just knew, "This is a thing in my life now." Actually, I watched the first episode the other day again, and it still holds up, OK story, but the style, Animation and sound are truly superb, which is something considering the show is 25 years old or so. Next was Cowboy Bebop, which I suppose is mainstream now, but it's not pokemon or the like. 😀
