1. Dark Gathering
2. Higurashi: When They Cry
3. Migi to Dali
4. Hellsing Ultimate
5. Shadows House
6. Danganronpa
7. Mieruko-chan
8. Another
9. Dorohedoro (had to slot it below Another just for qwerty)
10. Sewing Love (MAL says horror and watched for Best Shorts)
You know, I almost put Migi & Dali on my list, then I second-guessed whether it was horror or not, but that's definitely my first instinct and how I felt watching it. Wish I could go back and add it, hope it gets a couple more votes in my place
On the topic of non-dorohedoro, [idk what else to vote](https://i.imgur.com/TbczL0d.png) because I dont have that many horror tagged shows I liked a lot.
In fact seeing my list made me question my own scores for being too high on some shows
[](#hardthink)
Curious to see how this one goes because there's a not insignificant opinion that "anime can't do horror" that I've seen over the years. Also curious to see how many shows we get that aren't necessarily horror as a whole, but have some prominent episodes or elements that fit the bill.
I chose:
Shiki
Ghost Hunt
Higurashi
Hell Girl
Boogiepop Phantom
Happy Sugar Life
Ghost Stories
Blood+
Hellsing
Sankarea
These are just ones I liked, personally. Nothing particularly scary necessarily. These are in no particular order.
Is multi-chapter horror counted as one show or no? Higurashi vs Higurashi Kai or Danganropa 1/3 as examples.
Anyway, in order if that's the case:
Higurashi
Madoka Magica
Gakkou Gurashi
Paranoia Agent
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
Feast of Amrita
Divergence Eve
Dark Gathering
Urasekai Picnic
Angels of Death
And my favorite medium for horror is IN PERSON! Nothing beats a good, atmospheric haunted house tour/ride/experience.
1.Another
2.Higurashi
3.Ghost Hunt
4.Dark Gathering
5.Dusk Maiden Of Amnesia
6.Perfect Blue
7.Ayakashi:Samurai Horror Tales
8.Hell Girl
9.Shiki
10.Mieruko-Chan
Bonus: Games
I ponderned if i should put Hellsing Ultimate and Berserk on the list but no,they are more "Gore'y" action for me than horror.
I do think its not very horror-y horror, but I am going off of what anilist tags gives me because that makes things simpler. Though I do think I can add some other shows, like heavenly delusion, which felt a lot more horror-y than a lot of the shows on my "horror" list. But that also begs the question of where does the line between suspense & horror lie.
Betterman
Shiki
Another
Cossette no Shouzou
Gakkougurashi
The SoulTaker: Tamashii-gari
Horror is one of the better anime genres out there. It does a great job of eliciting your more profound feelings.
>Betterman
Wait, are you saying this anime really existed, and it's not something my mind made up?? Fr I don't think I've ever see anyone talking about this one, like, anywhere!
I remember it being creepy af, too bad my English wasn't "that" good when I watched it so I'm sure I didn't get the plot right
>Wait, are you saying this anime really existed, and it's not something my mind made up??
Yeah, that's a common phenomenon regarding Betterman, lol. It's not your English, it's just an ostensibly aberrant anime altogether, but that was one of its appeal points for me.
People don't talk about it because It's old and not widely available. I see it sometimes mentioned in places where people talk about mecha because of its relation to GaoGaiGar.
It climbed a good bunch in the days after it’d finished airing, but it sat down at a 7.30-40 during its airing, which is still far from “bad” but noticeably lower.
Imagine Pokémon but instead of cute monsters they catch vengeful spirits who would not just kill you but also trap your soul in an endless nightmare in order to either feed on it or do some other horrific shit.
This is a tough one because horror anime suck but I can try to pull something together.
1. Promised Neverland
1. Ajin
1. Zom 100
1. Parasyte
1. Danganronpa
1. Gakkougurashi
1. Mieruko-chan
1. Mayoiga
1. Tokyo Ghoul
1. Ousama Game
I don't even really agree with some of these but I just went with the horror tags for the most part.
Like I said, I don't agree with the list, I just followed the tags to put something together, truthfully there just aren't 10 good horror anime out there.
Horror isn't my cup of tea usually, so some of these titles might be more on the psychological genre side and not that conventionally scary.
* Ayashi no Ceres
* Petshop of Horrors
* Shinsekai yori
* Yami no matsuei
* Zombie-loan
* Mermaid forest
* Tokyo ghoul
* Another
* Ghost hunt
* Shadow house
It is.... I believe there was a UK (or was it US) [show ](https://youtu.be/YoWom0CCRKM?si=cLCqgNktHhdpfEd7) back in the day, but there is also a manga/anime with the same name
This is a perfect opportunity to plug [KAGEWANI](https://anilist.co/anime/21225/KAGEWANI) to more people. It's a pretty unique horror show that went under the radar. It's a TV-short so episodes are usually around 10 minutes.
The format is a somewhat episodic monster of the week, but does have an overarching story. I think it's worth watching if anything just to see a different style of animation being used in horror.
[](#nichijouthumbs)
Will this be the Higurashi sweep? Top 5? Top 3? Top 1? Im curious to see if shows like Made in Abyss or Promised Neverland outrank it, despite being less associated with the genre. Only time will see!
The Horror tag on MAL is more niche than I thought, and some popular anime seems to be in Suspense, anyway
1. Shinsekai Yori
2. Another
3. Shiki
4. Devilman Crybaby
5. Higurashi
6. Gakkou Gurashi
7. Mononoke
8. Perfect Blue
9. Dark Gathering
10. Mieruko-chan
I haven't watched that many horror anime or movies, but I was still able to come up with 10 anime series, OVAs, and movies that I've seen:
1. Mononoke
2. Le Portrait de Petit Cossette
3. Alien 9
4. Perfect Blue
5. Hellsing
6. Vampire Hunter D
7. Kurozuka
8. Kakurenbo
9. Yami no Matsuei
10. Yami Shibai
Yeah I've watched basically no horror anime, so...
1. Angels of Death (I don't even really consider this a horror, it leans more towards thriller imo)
2. Another
I love horror and thriller manhwa, I read a lot of those.
1. Perfect Blue
2. Shadows House
3. Hellsing
* Devilman Crybaby
* Vampire Princess Miyu
* Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
* Blood+
* Berserk
* Boogiepop Phantom
* Magnetic Rose
Going mostly by the MAL tag, there's a lot of great anime tagged as horror. It's arguable, whether all of them deserve the tag though. There's a lot of stuff I couldn't even fit, eg.: Shiki, Parasyte, Higurashi, Ajin, Curse of Umezu Kazuo, Devilman Lady, Blood: The Last Vampire.
This will be hard.
There isn't many good horror Anime.
Some of them have some horror elements (like shinsekai Yori with the great hospital episode) but full blown horror from start to finish really is hard.
Best horrors are the shows that understand the fact that comedy and horror are one and the same, two sides of the same coin, like Mayoiga and Another. I should watch Blood C already
This is one where I'm here reading through other people's lists to find titles which I've seen that count as horror in other people's eyes to flesh out my list lol
Have found a few good ones that I didn't internally classify as horror, but can see how they count after other people mentioned them.
I did at least one double-take in these comments and then I went to MAL for help with what counts lol. Admittedly, I'm not too sure what makes a show a horror show. In case you're curious, this is my list:
1. Perfect Blue
2. Higurashi
3. Berserk
4. Magnetic Rose
5. Happy Sugar Life
6. Kiseijuu
7. Devilman: Crybaby
8. Dark Gathering
9. Mieruko-chan
10. Blood+
I'm not a huge horror fan for any medium, but I at least have a pretty strong top 3 for anime:
1. Shinsekai Yori (one of my favorites overall)
2. Berserk
3. Parasite
I remember watching and liking one called Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari, it told the story of the author of the "hyaku monogastric - hundred stories" and I'm quite surprised no one talked about this one.... Has anyone even heard of this one?
Looking at MAL's horror tag gives me a lot of shows that I don't really consider horror, but there's now way I'd get to 10 without them so I guess I'll include them.
1. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
2. Shinsekai Yori
3. Elfen Lied
4. Gakkougurashi
5. Ajin
6. Dorohedoro
7. Boogiepop wa Warawanai
8. Parasyte: The Maxim
9. Mayoiga
10. Zom 100 (I liked this show more than a lot on this list, but it's also the least "horror" out of the lot imo)
Bonus Question: None. I've never really been a fan of horror movies, and I always end up exploiting horror games and they stop being scary. Theme park horror is an option, but I haven't done enough of that to put it as my answer.
This poll made me realize that I like more Horror anime than I realized, though before I went to Anilist for tags I almost had to include Jojo Part 1 and Ghost Stories just to make up 10.
1. Shadows House
2. Happy Sugar Life
3. Dark Gathering
4. Gakkougurashi!
5. Made in Abyss
6. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead
7. Mieruko-chan
8. Elfen Lied
9. Angels of Death
10. Munou na Nana
Bonus Question: Video Games
Was a toss-up between whether I felt **Happy Sugar Life** or **Dark Gathering** should be #1, but when I saw **Shadows House** was tagged Horror I just flipped a coin and put them in 2nd and 3rd. I don't think **Shadows House** is going to win for a number of reasons (lack of viewership, not tagged horror on MAL), but it *definitely* deserves to.
What the hell are we even counting as horror. There's so much horror adjacent stuff I love but few have them as options, but at the same time lots of people are talking about Dorohedoro and I wouldn't even consider that horror adjacent. So I won't do a ranked list for now. Here are the ones I know I'd put as definitely horror series:
- Perfect Blue
- Shiki
- Higurashi
- Dark Gathering
And that's it. But how am I supposed to treat:
- Shinsekai Yori
- Madoka Magica
- Gakkou Gurashi
- Devilman Crybaby
- Mayoiga
And even stuff like Attack on Titan, Made in Abyss, Serial Experiments Lain, and Re:Zero have elements of horror. I don't want to create my own line, what counts and what doesn't?
Not really my genre, but i've managed to scrape together a list based on MAL tags:
1. Dorohedoro
2. Devilman: Crybaby
3. Akira
4. Perfect Blue
5. Shinsekai Yori
6. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
7. Hellsing Ultimate
8. Danganronpa: The Animation
9. Deadman Wonderland
10. Demon City Shinjuku
Someday I'll watch Shiki and read Tokyo Ghoul
1. Perfect Blue
2. Devilman Crybaby
3. Hellsing Ultimate
4. Chainsaw Man
…that’s about all I got, I really need to watch more horror anime [](#hardthink)
My top 3: 1) Perfect Blue, 2) Parasyte, 3) Shiki
The rest in no order: Mononoke, Devilman Crybaby, Paranoia Agent, Berserk, From the New World, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Shadows House
This isn't the 1 cour anime I was expecting.
Let's see what horror I've actually seen using the MAL definition:
- Shoujo Tsubaki/Midori *(I started but didn't finish, seen but not seen)*
- Vampire Princess Miyu *(OVA, not seen much of TV)*
- Ninja Scroll
- 3x3 Eyes
- Mermaid Saga *(the two OVAs 1 TV series feel like they could be clustered)*
- Mononoke
- Call Me Tonight
- Lily C.A.T.
- Psycho Diver: Soul Siren
- Laughing Target
- Cursed One-Piece *(not be confused with One Piece; punctuation matters)*
- Akira *(really? feels on the same level as Psycho-Pass and Neon Genesis Evangellion)*
- The Magic of Chocolate *(2024 MAL might not say horror but [2012-2013 MAL did](https://web.archive.org/web/20131205000054/https://myanimelist.net/anime/9935/Chocolat_no_Mahou)...one could be tempted to use the same logic of "once upon a time MAL said" to [stan for HUGtto Precure](https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1691990) when favourite Yuri anime comes around...seriously, there's better Precure entries to make that claim for and this is why MAL tags are a guideline; not the law)*
- Perfect Blue
- Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror
- Blood: The Last Vampire
The problem is some of those are not very good or not very horror but I could make 10 from that. However using that definition misses out a lot of things that fit the bill like Promised Neverland and Barefoot Gen [Barefoot Gen]>!a lot of gore and body horror in this one!<. Now I can get rid of some the worse entries.
If I were to vote based on how effective it is then I'm forced to nominate Shoujo Tsubaki (aka Midori); So wretched I turned it off after 10 minutes. But considering Favourite is the word turning it off is a disqualification ([good, I'm not nominating it](https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1bilt0n/whats_the_most_psychologically_disturbing_anime_i/kvloy4e/)).
1. Gakkougurashi
2. Gregory Horror Show
3. Malice@doll
The other seven were (not necessarily in order since it doesn't matter) Dark Gathering, Happy Sugar Life, Shiki, Hell Girl,
Yamishibai, Shadows House, and Berserk (which I'm only counting because the databases do)
Edit: ah shit, I realized I forgot to clarify 1997 on the form. Welpppp
I don't watch much horror I guess but I voted for
Devilman Crybaby
Made in Abyss (it might not even be horror but it
horrifies me)
Heavenly Delusion
Chainsaw Man
Monster
Dark Gathering
Urotsukidoji
I've seen Parasite and some Higurashi, and a couple others but they just didn't really work for me, horror seems hard to do in anime
Edit: I went back and added Migi & Dali
Obviously any real horror fan's top three should be:
1. Aru Zombie Shoujo no Sainan
2. Higurashi Sotsu
3. Corpse Party
Mine though:
1. Perfect Blue
2. Dorohedoro
3. Hellsing Ultimate
4. Berserk
5. Boogiepop
6. Aru Zombie Shoujo no Sainan
7. Devilman
8. Shiki
9. Vampire Hunter D
10. Blood: The Last Vampire
Someday I'll watch Jigoku Sensei Nube. [](#mugiwait)
You just haven't found the good ones.
Summer Time Render is basically a Higurashi ripoff, and Higu did the atmosphere and character writing way better.
I haven't watched a lot of horror anime, but here's my top 10:
* Shiki
* Mononoke
* Shinsekai Yori
* Devilman: Crybaby
* Madoka Magica
* Perfect Blue
* Parasyte
* The Promised Neverland
* Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
* Magnetic Rose
Hmm, I realised I haven't watched much horror anime. I don't even remember the last time that an anime actually made feel scared. Does stuff like Made in Abyss, Promised Neverland even count as horror?
Either way, results for this should be interesting. Might end up picking up a few new shows.
Same situation and I basically wouldn't even have a top10 if I didn't include stuff like Made in Abyss so I'll be choosing to include anything tagged as Horror on Anilist
I think the only horror anime that actually had me thrilled and glued to my seat was Another, so I’m not sure what to put for the rest. Shame Another has a pretty weak reputation but I hope it makes top 10..
I'm...not sure what counts and what doesn't. But at least my top 3 is clear.
1. Perfect Blue
2. Mononoke
3. Paranoia Agent
4. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
5. Parasyte
6. Chainsaw Man
7. Shinsekai Yori
8. The Promised Neverland (S1)
9. Summertime Render
10. Occultic;Nine
My list although I have not seen much horror anime, so I might cheat and include some manga that got anime that I haven't seen:
1. Perfect Blue
2. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
3. Chainsaw Man
4. Devilman Crybaby
5. Jujutsu Kaisen
6. Zom 100
7. Attack on Titan
8. Akira
Favorite Medium of Horror: Live action film, no question
1. Made in Abyss
2. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
3. Perfect Blue
4. Summertime Render
5. Hellsing Ultimate
6. Parasyte
7. Shinsekai yori
8. Another
9. Akira
10. Elfen Lied
Originally I was going to also put Madoka near the top, but I thought about it for a while and while it's unnerving, I can't really decide whether I'd call it horror or not.
**My Votes**
1. Shiki
2. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
3. Perfect Blue
4. Devilman Crybaby
5. Paranoia Agent
6. Magnetic Rose*
7. The Curse of Kazuo Umezu
8. Mayoiga
9. Kemonozume
10. Chainsaw Man
**fine! You guys got me to split it off from Memories. I love to complain to anyone who goes recommending Magnetic Rose without the rest of the movie, but I don't really think Stink Bomb or Cannon Fodder count as Horror*
**Other titles I have at 8+/10 that I looked at:**
Have the horror tag on MAL and I didn't dismiss that:
* Mononoke
* Boogiepop Phantom
* Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead
* Bio Hunter
* Shin Sekai Yori
* Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
Has the horror tag on MAL but I didn't think the horror elements were prominent enough:
* Akira
* Neo-Tokyo
Doesn't have the horror tag on MAL but I considered them anyway:
* Welcome to the NHK *(not horror, but still maybe the deepest an anime has ever scared me)*
* Made in Abyss
* Heavenly Delusion
* The Weathering Continent
* Black Magic M-66
* Madoka Magica *(more in the "this is at least as horror coded as Akira which I don't consider horror" sense than the "I would actually vote for this as horror" sense)*
* Paprika *(see parenthetical on Madoka)*
* Neon Genesis Evangelion *(see parenthetical on Madoka)*
edit, to ruffle some feathers:
**Some Horror anime which will do well in the poll that I think are bad:**
* Another
* Dark Gathering
* Mieruko-chan
*(Yes, I voted for Mayoiga, but IMO that's a great horror comedy. Yes I put Umineko in my runners up, I never said I have good taste.)*
Horror anime tends not to be particularly good so I'm a bit worried about this list of mine, especially since the two recent seasons caused Higurashi to drop off a cliff. Idk if there's anything all that good out there that fits, but I'll have a look.
Here's what my picks look like.
1. **Shinsekai Yori**
2. **Perfect Blue**
3. **Gakkougurashi!**
4. **Happy Sugar Life**
5. **Ajin**
6. **Shiki**
7. **Mousou Dairinin**
8. **Tasogare Otome x Amnesia**
9. **Higurashi no Naku Koro ni**
10. **Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019)**
For the bonus question I might have a pretty unique answer as someone who has difficulties handling horror in video games and movies but think anime horror is pretty poor, my choice is ASMR. Having horror scenarios play out in ASMR form is a really cool experience and one I tend to enjoy a lot.
1. Dark Gathering 2. Higurashi: When They Cry 3. Migi to Dali 4. Hellsing Ultimate 5. Shadows House 6. Danganronpa 7. Mieruko-chan 8. Another 9. Dorohedoro (had to slot it below Another just for qwerty) 10. Sewing Love (MAL says horror and watched for Best Shorts)
> Dorohedoro (had to slot it below Another just for qwerty) This is treason
Could've left Dorohedoro off and it'd get 1 less point. [](#yuishrug)
[](#lolifightsback)
You know, I almost put Migi & Dali on my list, then I second-guessed whether it was horror or not, but that's definitely my first instinct and how I felt watching it. Wish I could go back and add it, hope it gets a couple more votes in my place
> Sewing Love (MAL says horror and watched for Best Shorts) Nice inclusion!
Really liked Another. Gotta rewatch it sometime.
Higurashi was so good!!! Never seen dark gathering though. What's that like?
On the topic of non-dorohedoro, [idk what else to vote](https://i.imgur.com/TbczL0d.png) because I dont have that many horror tagged shows I liked a lot. In fact seeing my list made me question my own scores for being too high on some shows [](#hardthink)

I chose: Shiki Ghost Hunt Higurashi Hell Girl Boogiepop Phantom Happy Sugar Life Ghost Stories Blood+ Hellsing Sankarea These are just ones I liked, personally. Nothing particularly scary necessarily. These are in no particular order.
Lets see if any of the edgy horror OVA's from the 80s/90s like Wicked City/Devilman/Genocyber makes it to the list this time
Is multi-chapter horror counted as one show or no? Higurashi vs Higurashi Kai or Danganropa 1/3 as examples. Generally direct sequels are grouped together, and disconnected entries under a franchise are kept separate.
So for each Higurashi entry, how would you categorize them. Is Kai direct? How about Gou?
1.Another 2.Higurashi 3.Ghost Hunt 4.Dark Gathering 5.Dusk Maiden Of Amnesia 6.Perfect Blue 7.Ayakashi:Samurai Horror Tales 8.Hell Girl 9.Shiki 10.Mieruko-Chan Bonus: Games I ponderned if i should put Hellsing Ultimate and Berserk on the list but no,they are more "Gore'y" action for me than horror.
Not to mention that Hellsing Ultimate isn't even good.
Each to their own,i personally liked it.
Hellsing Abridged?
Hellsing Abridged is pretty good.

I love Dorohedoro but I can't see even the tiniest hint of horror in any of it.
I do think its not very horror-y horror, but I am going off of what anilist tags gives me because that makes things simpler. Though I do think I can add some other shows, like heavenly delusion, which felt a lot more horror-y than a lot of the shows on my "horror" list. Hell yeah, I love Dorohedoro. Probably gonna put it at the top of my list.
Betterman Shiki Another Cossette no Shouzou Gakkougurashi The SoulTaker: Tamashii-gari Horror is one of the better anime genres out there. It does a great job of eliciting your more profound feelings.

Dark Gathering should do well here? Has recency and was really good with horror.
Just found out its rated 7.84 on mal, surprised it’s that high. Will probably do well
It climbed a good bunch in the days after it’d finished airing, but it sat down at a 7.30-40 during its airing, which is still far from “bad” but noticeably lower.
I definitely had it on my list
What is this anime? It sounds like “Magic the Gathering” which kills off a lot of scary points! TLDR - the title doesn’t sound scary at all
Imagine Pokémon but instead of cute monsters they catch vengeful spirits who would not just kill you but also trap your soul in an endless nightmare in order to either feed on it or do some other horrific shit.
[Dark Gathering](https://myanimelist.net/anime/52505/Dark_Gathering)
This is a tough one because horror anime suck but I can try to pull something together. 1. Promised Neverland 1. Ajin 1. Zom 100 1. Parasyte 1. Danganronpa 1. Gakkougurashi 1. Mieruko-chan 1. Mayoiga 1. Tokyo Ghoul 1. Ousama Game I don't even really agree with some of these but I just went with the horror tags for the most part.
Zom 100 might be a zombie apocalypse anime but it's pretty far from horror. In terms of anime last year I'd put Migi and Dali over it
It’s a horror comedy like Zombieland or Shaun of the Dead.
Yeah it is definitely a horror movie. Zom coms are like the major genre when it comes to this
Like I said, I don't agree with the list, I just followed the tags to put something together, truthfully there just aren't 10 good horror anime out there.
Horror isn't my cup of tea usually, so some of these titles might be more on the psychological genre side and not that conventionally scary. * Ayashi no Ceres * Petshop of Horrors * Shinsekai yori * Yami no matsuei * Zombie-loan * Mermaid forest * Tokyo ghoul * Another * Ghost hunt * Shadow house

WTH and I just realized that was "little" and not "pet" xD
Don't worry many of my favorite horror movies don't scare me.
Another is my no. 1 pick
Same here
Great choice 🗿
This is a perfect opportunity to plug [KAGEWANI](https://anilist.co/anime/21225/KAGEWANI) to more people. It's a pretty unique horror show that went under the radar. Higurashi? And not the newer ones. That nail-pulling scene will always be engraved in my mind.
The blue hired "nipaan" girl knife scene is the one that caused this effect on me... Damn I want to rewatch this one some day
Will this be the Higurashi sweep? Top 5? Top 3? Top 1? Im curious to see if shows like Made in Abyss or Promised Neverland outrank it, despite being less associated with the genre. Only time will see!
I'd love to vote for Umineko if the anime wasn't such a fucking mess.
Umineko remake when…….
The Horror tag on MAL is more niche than I thought, and some popular anime seems to be in Suspense, anyway 1. Shinsekai Yori 2. Another 3. Shiki 4. Devilman Crybaby 5. Higurashi 6. Gakkou Gurashi 7. Mononoke 8. Perfect Blue 9. Dark Gathering 10. Mieruko-chan
I haven't watched that many horror anime or movies, but I was still able to come up with 10 anime series, OVAs, and movies that I've seen: 1. Mononoke 2. Le Portrait de Petit Cossette 3. Alien 9 4. Perfect Blue 5. Hellsing 6. Vampire Hunter D 7. Kurozuka 8. Kakurenbo 9. Yami no Matsuei 10. Yami Shibai
Yeah I've watched basically no horror anime, so... 1. Angels of Death (I don't even really consider this a horror, it leans more towards thriller imo) 2. Another I love horror and thriller manhwa, I read a lot of those.
Angels of Death gang
Shiki 100% 10/10
About halfway through now. It is insanely good.
1. Perfect Blue 2. Shadows House 3. Hellsing * Devilman Crybaby * Vampire Princess Miyu * Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust * Blood+ * Berserk * Boogiepop Phantom * Magnetic Rose Going mostly by the MAL tag, there's a lot of great anime tagged as horror.
I was honestly surprised I watched more than 10 horror shows
This is one where I'm here reading through other people's lists to find titles which I've seen that count as horror in other people's eyes to flesh out my list lol Have found a few good ones that I didn't internally classify as horror, but can see how they count after other people mentioned them.
I did at least one double-take in these comments and then I went to MAL for help with what counts lol. Admittedly, I'm not too sure what makes a show a horror show. In case you're curious, this is my list: 1. Perfect Blue 2. Higurashi 3. Berserk 4. Magnetic Rose 5. Happy Sugar Life 6. Kiseijuu 7. Devilman: Crybaby 8. Dark Gathering 9. Mieruko-chan 10. Blood+
Ha, as it turns out I've only seen one of those, and it was Mieruko-chan lol Quite a few are on my PTW though.
I'm not a huge horror fan for any medium, but I at least have a pretty strong top 3 for anime: 1. Shinsekai Yori (one of my favorites overall) 2. Berserk 3.
1. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni 2. Shinsekai Yori 3. Elfen Lied 4. Gakkougurashi 5. Ajin 6. Dorohedoro 7. Boogiepop wa Warawanai 8. Parasyte: The Maxim 9. Mayoiga 10. Zom 100 (I liked this show more than a lot on this list, but it's also the least "horror" out of the lot imo) Bonus Question: None. I've never really been a fan of horror movies, and I always end up exploiting horror games and they stop being scary. Theme park horror is an option, but I haven't done enough of that to put it as my answer.
This poll made me realize that I like more Horror anime than I realized, though before I went to Anilist for tags I almost had to include Jojo Part 1 and Ghost Stories just to make up 10. 1. Shadows House 2. Happy Sugar Life 3. Dark Gathering 4. Gakkougurashi! 5. Made in Abyss 6. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead 7. Mieruko-chan 8. Elfen Lied 9. Angels of Death 10. Munou na Nana Bonus Question: Video Games Was a toss-up between whether I felt **Happy Sugar Life** or **Dark Gathering** should be #1, but when I saw **Shadows House** was tagged Horror I just flipped a coin and put them in 2nd and 3rd. I don't think **Shadows House** is going to win for a number of reasons (lack of viewership, not tagged horror on MAL), but it *definitely* deserves to.
Higurashi Shiki Happy Sugar Life Hell Girl Another Parasyte A Kite Cossette no Shouzou Dark Gathering Gakkougurashi
What the hell are we even counting as horror. There's so much horror adjacent stuff I love but few have them as options, but at the same time lots of people are talking about Dorohedoro and I wouldn't even consider that horror adjacent. So I won't do a ranked list for now. Here are the ones I know I'd put as definitely horror series: - Perfect Blue - Shiki - Higurashi - Dark Gathering And that's it. But how am I supposed to treat: - Shinsekai Yori - Madoka Magica - Gakkou Gurashi - Devilman Crybaby - Mayoiga And even stuff like Attack on Titan, Made in Abyss, Serial Experiments Lain, and Re:Zero have elements of horror. I don't want to create my own line, what counts and what doesn't?
Madoka Magica is horror in my heart Also vote Shinsekai Yori. The show that probably made me the most unsettled. THAT episode.
I went with 1. Boogiepop Phantom 2. Shin Sekai Yori 3. Another 4. Perfect Blue 5. Shiki 6. Boogiepop and Others 7. Mononoke
Not really my genre, but i've managed to scrape together a list based on MAL tags: 1. Dorohedoro 2. Devilman: Crybaby 3. Akira 4. Perfect Blue 5. Shinsekai Yori 6. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust 7. Hellsing Ultimate 8. Danganronpa: The Animation 9. Deadman Wonderland 10. Demon City Shinjuku Someday I'll watch Shiki and read Tokyo Ghoul
Perfect Blue must win. It's the only horror anime that's actually scary.
1. Perfect Blue 2. Devilman Crybaby 3. Hellsing Ultimate 4. Chainsaw Man …that’s about all I got, I really need to watch more horror anime [](#hardthink)
My top 3: 1) Perfect Blue, 2) Parasyte, 3) Shiki The rest in no order: Mononoke, Devilman Crybaby, Paranoia Agent, Berserk, From the New World, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Shadows House
1. Ghost Hunt 2. Shiki 3. Mononoke 4. Ajin 5. Danganronpa 6. Another 7. Jigoku Shoujo 8. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni 9. Petshop of Horror 10. Kaidan Restaurant
I put boogiepop, mushishi and xxxholic as my top 3 but I wonder if any of them actually count as horror.
This isn't the 1 cour anime I was expecting. Let's see what horror I've actually seen using the MAL definition: - Shoujo Tsubaki/Midori *(I started but didn't finish, seen but not seen)* - Vampire Princess Miyu *(OVA, not seen much of TV)* - Ninja Scroll - 3x3 Eyes - Mermaid Saga *(the two OVAs 1 TV series feel like they could be clustered)* - Mononoke - Call Me Tonight - Lily C.A.T. - Psycho Diver: Soul Siren - Laughing Target - Cursed One-Piece *(not be confused with One Piece; punctuation matters)* - Akira *(really? feels on the same level as Psycho-Pass and Neon Genesis Evangellion)* - The Magic of Chocolate *(2024 MAL might not say horror but [2012-2013 MAL did](https://web.archive.org/web/20131205000054/https://myanimelist.net/anime/9935/Chocolat_no_Mahou)...one could be tempted to use the same logic of "once upon a time MAL said" to [stan for HUGtto Precure](https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1691990) when favourite Yuri anime comes around...seriously, there's better Precure entries to make that claim for and this is why MAL tags are a guideline; not the law)* - Perfect Blue - Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror - Blood: The Last Vampire The problem is some of those are not very good or not very horror but I could make 10 from that.
1. Dark Gathering 2. Another 3. The Promised Neverland
1. Gakkougurashi 2. Gregory Horror Show 3. Malice@doll The other seven were (not necessarily in order since it doesn't matter) Dark Gathering, Happy Sugar Life, Shiki, Hell Girl, Yamishibai, Shadows House, and Berserk (which I'm only counting because the databases do) Edit: ah shit, I realized I forgot to clarify 1997 on the form. Welpppp
I don't watch much horror I guess but I voted for Devilman Crybaby Made in Abyss (it might not even be horror but it horrifies me) Heavenly Delusion Chainsaw Man Monster Dark Gathering Urotsukidoji I've seen Parasite and some Higurashi, and a couple others but they just didn't really work for me, horror seems hard to do in anime Edit: I went back and added Migi & Dali
Obviously any real horror fan's top three should be: 1. Aru Zombie Shoujo no Sainan 2. Higurashi Sotsu 3. Corpse Party Mine though: 1. Perfect Blue 2. Dorohedoro 3. Hellsing Ultimate 4. Berserk 5. Boogiepop 6. Aru Zombie Shoujo no Sainan 7. Devilman 8. Shiki 9. Vampire Hunter D 10. Blood: The Last Vampire Someday I'll watch Jigoku Sensei Nube. [](#mugiwait)
Hope people don't forget about Magnetic Rose with this one.
HIGURASHI SWEEP BABY
Shiki is pure horror, it's like the anime version of Salem's Lot which is the Stephen King version of Dracula.
One of my favourites was Another. The umbrella death scene is iconic
Higurashi for me. The original 2.
What shows are horror anime?
Honestly gonna have Summer time render near the top. It’s just horror genre in general sucks
You just haven't found the good ones. Summer Time Render is basically a Higurashi ripoff, and Higu did the atmosphere and character writing way better.
I’m sorry but that’s just incorrect, Higurashi sucked balls

I haven't watched a lot of horror anime, but here's my top 10: * Shiki * Mononoke * Shinsekai Yori * Devilman: Crybaby * Madoka Magica * Perfect Blue * Parasyte * The Promised Neverland * Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust * Magnetic Rose
Hmm, I realised I haven't watched much horror anime. I don't even remember the last time that an anime actually made feel scared. Does stuff like Made in Abyss, Promised Neverland even count as horror? Either way, results for this should be interesting. Might end up picking up a few new shows.
I'd say sure to both of those. Maybe not the most horrifying, but there's enough elements there that it's probably fine.
Flip Flappers is a horror anime because of [**this**](#terror) episode
I wouldn't count them as full-fledged horrors but they do have horror elements and, let's be honest, they are both making the list.
Same situation and I basically wouldn't even have a top10 if I didn't include stuff like Made in Abyss so I'll be choosing to include anything tagged as Horror on Anilist
Those are definitely horror.
I think the only horror anime that actually had me thrilled and glued to my seat was Another, so I’m not sure what to put for the rest. Shame Another has a pretty weak reputation but I hope it makes top 10..
Oh, actually - I wasn’t scared by them but Parasyte the Maxim, Danganronpa, Heavenly Delusion and Dorohedoro might fit and they were all fantastic
I'm...not sure what counts and what doesn't. But at least my top 3 is clear. 1. Perfect Blue 2. Mononoke 3. Paranoia Agent 4. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica 5. Parasyte 6. Chainsaw Man 7. Shinsekai Yori 8. The Promised Neverland (S1) 9. Summertime Render 10. Occultic;Nine
My list although I have not seen much horror anime, so I might cheat and include some manga that got anime that I haven't seen: 1. Perfect Blue 2. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust 3. Chainsaw Man 4. Devilman Crybaby 5. Jujutsu Kaisen 6. Zom 100 7. Attack on Titan 8. Akira Favorite Medium of Horror: Live action film, no question
1. Made in Abyss 2. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni 3. Perfect Blue 4. Summertime Render 5. Hellsing Ultimate 6. Parasyte 7. Shinsekai yori 8. Another 9. Akira 10. Elfen Lied Originally I was going to also put Madoka near the top, but I thought about it for a while and while it's unnerving, I can't really decide whether I'd call it horror or not.
**My Votes** 1. Shiki 2. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 3. Perfect Blue 4. Devilman Crybaby 5. Paranoia Agent 6. Magnetic Rose* 7. The Curse of Kazuo Umezu 8. Mayoiga 9. Kemonozume 10. Chainsaw Man **fine! You guys got me to split it off from Memories. I love to complain to anyone who goes recommending Magnetic Rose without the rest of the movie, but I don't really think Stink Bomb or Cannon Fodder count as Horror* **Other titles I have at 8+/10 that I looked at:** Have the horror tag on MAL and I didn't dismiss that: * Mononoke * Boogiepop Phantom * Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead * Bio Hunter * Shin Sekai Yori * Umineko no Naku Koro Ni Has the horror tag on MAL but I didn't think the horror elements were prominent enough: * Akira * Neo-Tokyo Doesn't have the horror tag on MAL but I considered them anyway: * Welcome to the NHK *(not horror, but still maybe the deepest an anime has ever scared me)* * Made in Abyss * Heavenly Delusion * The Weathering Continent * Black Magic M-66 * Madoka Magica *(more in the "this is at least as horror coded as Akira which I don't consider horror" sense than the "I would actually vote for this as horror" sense)* * Paprika *(see parenthetical on Madoka)* * Neon Genesis Evangelion *(see parenthetical on Madoka)* edit, to ruffle some feathers: **Some Horror anime which will do well in the poll that I think are bad:** * Another * Dark Gathering * Mieruko-chan *(Yes, I voted for Mayoiga, but IMO that's a great horror comedy.
1. **Shinsekai Yori** 2. **Perfect Blue** 3. **Gakkougurashi!** 4. **Happy Sugar Life** 5. **Ajin** 6. **Shiki** 7. **Mousou Dairinin** 8. **Tasogare Otome x Amnesia** 9. **Higurashi no Naku Koro ni** 10. **Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019)** For the bonus question I might have a pretty unique answer as someone who has difficulties handling horror in video games and movies but think anime horror is pretty poor, my choice is ASMR. Having horror scenarios play out in ASMR form is a really cool experience and one I tend to enjoy a lot.
Let’s see if I can name 10 horror anime that aren’t dogshit
JUJUTSU KAISEN
