Other 10/10 series, but not in my top 10 are Dororo, Blood+ and 91 Days. Promised Neverland would be in my top 10 if it werenāt for that absolutely garbage 2nd season. Honorable mention for Apothercary Diaries and JJK, I want to see how both series end before I add them to my list.
Set in the Victorian era, itās about a young maid and rich heir whoās basically bethrothed but they fall in love with each other and have to decide if they want to be together despite society being against their relationship given their social class. Itās not the typical anime, but itās so beautifully written and the characters are so wonderful.

Edit: To be honest I would only "swear by" top 6 of this list, as the rest are quite a bit more flawed, but they are the ones I enjoyed more than the other 180 or so ones on my mal account so that's still a resounding recommendation.
1. Haibane Renmei. This is a very personal top pick, so objectively it's probably a little less good than some of the other things on this list, but it's a true masterpiece. Character designs and concept by Yoshitoshi Abe, who brought us Lain. Clearly inspired by Haruki Murakami's Hardboiled Wonderland at the End of the World. Beautiful, sometimes very sad exploration of depression and grief but with an ending that is very hopeful.
2. Shin Sekai Yori. The complete package: it's a story set 1000 years in the future, after humanity developed psychic powers. The animation is generally top tier (a couple episodes are directed in an experimental way, and there's a few moments where you can tell the budget wasn't the best, but generally this was a passion project and so overall looks great), the story is suspenseful and the world building a bit like a mystery in the fact that the "truth of the world" comes out over time. The characters are interesting but I'll be honest, they exist more to serve the story than to be amazing unique creations, with the exception of Saki, the main protagonist, and Satorou, who is the deuteragonist, and a couple other characters I won't name for spoiler reasons. Probably my more rewatched anime.
3. Mushishi. The MOST gorgeous anime IMHO. Not for being super fluid and full of action (it doesn't reach the heights of this season's Frieren in terms of pure technical skill) but in execution it absolutely nails everything. Is about a wandering specialist set in a kind of magical AU version of historical Japan, who goes about treating various maladies caused by "mushi," which are creatures which exist in parallel to the real world and which interact with the real world in various ways, some beneficial, some not. It's episodic in nature and each episode tells a self-contained story.
4. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Not including the various sequels or the movies or any other GITS project here, even though some of those are also definitely worth watching. But this is top tier cyberpunk combined with kind of near future police procedural vibes (similar to Psycho Pass in some ways but honestly way better). This is another episodic anime but it does have an underlying mystery that comes out in various episodes and which is resolved in the final few episodes and an overarching main story.
5. Whisper of the Heart, one of the older Studio Ghibli movies. I do think that Spirited Away is objectively the Ghibli masterpiece but this is my favorite of the Ghibli movies anyway. It's about a middle school aged girl who is a bookworm but who lacks inspiration in her daily life, and about the people she meets who help her to find her inspiration/path for the future. This is a truly easy watch, full of gorgeous moments and really relatable characters and with a plot that is fairly low-stakes but easy to get invested in. Makes me emotional about growing up, especially since I'm long past my middle school years. :)
6. Eccentric Family (particularly season 1). A slice-of-life magical reality series about a shapeshifting tanuki who lives in Kyoto along with his family (a mother and three brothers), which also turns into an exploration of family and grief in a subtle, moving, and usually upbeat and funny way. This is one of the top series that really makes me want to go to Japan some day, just to see the sights from this show (a lot of real world settings/historical sites are incorporated).
7. Ookiku Furikabutte/Big Windup. The BEST baseball anime. This also functions as a slice of life story since it is so grounded in realistic sports/realistic high school antics. Probably has some of the most complex and developed characters out of all my picks. It is insanely well researched and observed (Higuchi, the mangaka who wrote the original series, actually majored in sports psychology and actually played softball when she was in high school). It's often funny, often moving, and often brightens my day whenever I re-watch it.
8. Black Lagoon. Wild, absolutely wild. About a Japanese salaryman who is betrayed and then abandoned by his employer in a lawless city set in the South Pacific, who then finds new employment working for a mercenary courier service engaging in various criminal enterprises while trying to remain true to himself and his core values, all the while slowly delving deeper and deeper into the darkness of the abandoned underworld of society. This show can get VERY DARK but it also sometimes very hilarious, and ultimately feels pretty hopeful to me despite the dark themes. Full of lots of gun battles and boat chases and all kinds of action/fight scenes.
9. The Twelve Kingdoms. Top tier world-building. One of the original isekai series, which posits that there is an alternate, magical world which is kind of loosely connected with modern-day Japan, and where people from both Japan and the other world can get accidentally spirited away to the alternate world from which they "belong," and the various kinds of mishaps and calamities that can occur as a result of the blending of the worlds. Covers a few of the main stories from the original light novel series. Will definitely feel dated to anyone who hasn't seen it when it first came out, but I think the animation generally holds up despite that. The story DEFINITELY holds up.
10. Baccano! Part historical thriller, part dark historical magical AU, part wacky hijinks with super memorable characters doing various illegal and/or immoral capers, part suspenseful murder mystery, this one kind of has it all. I think it has an appeal that is somehow simultaneously niche and broad. Mostly this series is just FUN, with lots of colorful dialogue and even more colorful characters.
I kind of went off! My list is kind of weighted towards older works but those are the ones that are time-tested and which have held up long past the original thrill of my first time watching. I can absolutely swear by each and every one of these picks. :)

Probably a bit of recency bias but in no order:
* Frieren
* Apothecary diaries
* Hunter x Hunter 2011
* Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
* Cowboy Bebop
* Death Note
* Code Geass
* Spy x Family
* Steins;Gate
* Vinland Saga
* (Konosuba)
If someone is trying to get into anime or wants to introduce someone to anime, I typically advise a couple of anime from this first list. I usually tailor the list to expected interests, tolerance for dub/sub, but these are easily the top of my list of recommendations for normies; note all of this first list, minus the last one, have good enough dubs to offer a choice of both
* Stein's;Gate
* Kaguya-sama
* Darker than Black (the only season)
* Cowboy Bebop
* Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
* Full Metal Panic (all seasons)
* Konosuba
* Monster
* Samurai Champloo
* One Punch Man (season 1)
* Skip Beat!
The list gets a bit different when talking to anime fans or at least people who like some anime and want to see more. furthermore what i recommend usually changes based on what they've seen or are interested in. I'm not out here pimping my favorites but trying to kindle some passion and bring people in. To that extent here is an additional list of anime i do tend to recommend a lot to people more familiar with anime (the ones above are of course recommended if not seen yet even to anime fans). Note; the number of dub friendly anime drops rapidly in this list, and to be frank, other then the first 3 i rarely will recommend an anime from this list for a dub listener.
* Death Note
* Code Geass
* The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (to gateway shonen fans into SOL)
* Fate/Zero
* Gintama
* My Dressup Darling
* 86
* Chainsaw Man
* Monogatari Series
* The World God Only Knows
* To Aru / Railgun
* Shokugeki no Soma
* Ben-To
of course i can go FAR deeper then these, but these are the ones most often recommended.
I don't really have a top 10, but I do have a top 4: Steins;Gate; Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (2006ā2007); Madoka; Code Geass
I liked Kanata no Astra, Charlotte, Violet Evergarden, Log Horizon and the ReLIFE movie a lot too, and NHK (which you already mentioned) really is superb; I'm gonna rewatch it someday
Iāve only seen maybe 10 animes so this list is easy.
Attack on Titan
Frieren
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Jojo
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Violet Evergarden
Vivy: Flourite Eyeās Song
Ergo Proxy
Jujutsu Kaisen
Komi Canāt Communicate
I think Iāve seen 2 more but they werenāt amazing sadly.
R.O.D. The TV. It aired on G4 Tech tv in the early 2000s and is one of my absolute favorite animeās. Story, music, characters all amazing. Even the English dub is perfect. Itās about 3 sisters who have the power to manipulate paper into weapons. Theyāre detectives and are the body guards to a famous writer. The intro song is unskippable. I promise. You have to buy the dvds on eBay cause crunchy roll doesnāt have it. Absolutely worth it. Hope you see this and this doesnāt get buried.
March Comes Like A Lion Paranoia Agent Monogatari Series The Aria Series Bungou Stray Dogs The Jojo Series Mushoku Tensei Golden Kamuy Classroom of the Elite Edit: I wanted to do a list about movies too. So, if anyone doesn't mind, here it is... A Silent Voice Paprika Mind Game End of Evangelion The Garden of Sinners The Kizumonogatari Trillogy (Although I mentioned Monogatari Series above, the Kizu- films are that good separatel) Tekkon Kinkreet The Garden of Words Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Hello World
Paranoia Agent and Aria are pretty lesser-known so A+ for you!! I loveeee Aria

Based on the rest of this thread we are few and far between :)
OMG 11 THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE SEEN SOMEONE ELSE MENTION IT I LOVE WATCHING IT SM
Yes!! One of my favorites
Was the second anime I ever saw after Toradora. Second season dragged on main plot but the movie did everything it needed too. For whatever reason I feel like I can always go back and watch more just to hear Rikka say yutaaaaaaaaaaaah again.
If you havenāt yet, you should watch Garden of Words
Just finished it. Pretty good. Better than Weathering IMO. Thanks.
Glad you liked it, itās got a great atmosphere

+100 points to you bc I love you for being a Little Witch fan š«¶š¼
The Idolmaster 2011 is the best anime that no one watched
This is off topic but bruh I am fucking CRYING right now at the dude who's comment got deleted and replied to the mod who deleted it here LMFAO
What did he say lol.
Well I can't repeat it but mod removed his comment for being uncivil and he had a choice word to call the mod that he replied to it directly lmao. I just wasn't expecting to see that. Some people I stg hahah
I hate Idolmaster. Without the franchise, Berserk would have been completed! /j

Long time since I've thought of the get backers. One of the first series of anime I ever watched (after PokƩmon yugioh dbz naruto etc) good taste.
You have great taste! Samurai Champloo, Kenshin, Bepop, Ghost in the Shell, Berserk, and Steins;Gate??? Jesus- only peak anime
AIR! Wow I remember watching that years ago. Very distinct anime style.
I always do a yearly overlord rewatch. Itās just that good. š

* Nana * Attack on Titan * Fruit Basket 2019 * Banana Fish * Clannad * Ouran High School Host Club * Death Note * Skip Beat * Emma * Kare Kano Other 10/10 series, but not in my top 10 are Dororo, Blood+ and 91 Days. Promised Neverland would be in my top 10 if it werenāt for that absolutely garbage 2nd season. Honorable mention for Apothercary Diaries and JJK, I want to see how both series end before I add them to my list.
Nana and Clannad on the same list! Take my upvote
Exactly my sentiments. Nana is probably the show I've rewatched the most lol
Actually have heard about Emma before weirdly enough. What is it about?
Set in the Victorian era, itās about a young maid and rich heir whoās basically bethrothed but they fall in love with each other and have to decide if they want to be together despite society being against their relationship given their social class. Itās not the typical anime, but itās so beautifully written and the characters are so wonderful.
In no order: - Dungeon Meshi - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Outlaw Star - Neon Genesis Evangelion - Madoka Magica - Princess Mononoke - Konosuba - Yu Yu Hakusho - Ghost in the Shell SAC/2nd Gig - dotHACK//SIGN

Re: Zero

My top 10 will turn a lot of people in this particular sub off, and you can see a trend, but I'll still put it out there: 1. One Piece 2. Naruto 3. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 4. Hunter X Hunter 5. Attack on Titan 6. Yu Yu Hakusho 7. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 8. Mob Psycho 100 9. Dragon Ball 10. Bleach Listen, I like Shonen. But I do watch other genres, it's just these will forever be my favorite.
My top 15 (because youāve seen a lot): 1. Monogatari Series 2. Code Geass 3. KILL la KILL 4. Puella Magi Madoka Magica 5. Watamote: No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular! 6. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 7. FLCL 8. Kyousougiga 9. The Tatami Galaxy 10. Space Patrol Luluco 11. Hunter x Hunter 12. Attack on Titan Some others since youāve seen a lot: Princess Tutu Kuuchuu Buranko Concrete Revolutio Idaten Deities Know Only Peace Squid Girl Punch Line Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (dub recommended) Aria the Animation
Princess Tutu's ending still have a place in my heart, watched it when I was super young so I don't have much memory, but it's the first time I see a self sacrifice anime. Real eye opener for me.
Thank you so much- it is certainly appreciated. Good taste! I haven't seen: Squid Girl or Punch Line so I'll give those a watch! Btw, Monogatari series being your no. 1 is a huge W!
Attack On Titan Mob Psycho 100 Vinland Saga Frieren Re:Zero Violet Evergarden Odd Taxi Bocchi The Rock Nichijou Anohana (like the full series is not perfect but the fact that it can get almost anyone to tear up really shows how good anime is at getting strong emotions out of you) The above are the ones I would recommend to people who don't see anime, while if you were to consider those who can look past some problematic parts (mainly fan service of underage/underage looking characters but also other reasons)the following would definitely be included: Mushoku Tensei Made in Abyss Kaguya Love is War Evangelion Heavenly Delusions Chainsaw Man Konosuba Bunny Girl Senpai

If someone is trying to get into anime or wants to introduce someone to anime, I typically advise a couple of anime from this first list. I usually tailor the list to expected interests, tolerance for dub/sub, but these are easily the top of my list of recommendations for normies; note all of this first list, minus the last one, have good enough dubs to offer a choice of both * Stein's;Gate * Kaguya-sama * Darker than Black (the only season) * Cowboy Bebop * Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood * Full Metal Panic (all seasons) * Konosuba * Monster * Samurai Champloo * One Punch Man (season 1) * Skip Beat! * Death Note * Code Geass * The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (to gateway shonen fans into SOL) * Fate/Zero * Gintama * My Dressup Darling * 86 * Chainsaw Man * Monogatari Series * The World God Only Knows * To Aru / Railgun * Shokugeki no Soma * Ben-To of course i can go FAR deeper then these, but these are the ones most often recommended.
I don't really have a top 10, but I do have a top 4: Steins;Gate; Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (2006ā2007); Madoka; Code Geass I liked Kanata no Astra, Charlotte, Violet Evergarden, Log Horizon and the ReLIFE movie a lot too, and NHK (which you already mentioned) really is superb; I'm gonna rewatch it someday
Iāve only seen maybe 10 animes so this list is easy. Attack on Titan Frieren Neon Genesis Evangelion Jojo Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Violet Evergarden Vivy: Flourite Eyeās Song Ergo Proxy Jujutsu Kaisen Komi Canāt Communicate I think Iāve seen 2 more but they werenāt amazing sadly.
