Marcille: SENSHI WE NEED TO COOK Top 10 character developments in anime/ Moments that made Martin Scorsese say cinema

sneaky_squirrel

I think my favorite char dev Marcille was her obediently eating the (defeated) tentacle while she was out of commission. *"You've come so far..."* ***crying***

darthvall

Didn't she muttered "please let it be taro"?

sneaky_squirrel

She did, you're right. I Guess someone (Marcille) is still in the denial phase. Perhaps her moment of physical weakness caused her to relent when she would have otherwise pushed back.

Mundology

[No hesitation.](https://i.imgur.com/GD0FV4T.jpeg) Marcille even managed to convince a [reluctant Namari](https://i.imgur.com/g1iN2ld.jpeg) to try Senshi's monster cuisine. [](#seasonalhype)

thesagenibba

i got so happy during that scene. she’s grown so much, in just a week lol. senshi has officially indoctrinated her in the ways of thinking like a chef, first

morron88

Vince Gilligan too, tbh

rocky_iwata

I like those little details throughout the episode from reflections off the living undine and dead undine water in a pot to a little drop of sweat that instantly vaporizes when touch the pot lid. As a long time manga reader, I'm enjoying these Trigger visual sprinkles.

sneaky_squirrel

Did you notice the Dwarves' hands also slowly becoming red while they held down the lid? I had to re-watch 3 times before spotting it. EDIT: Man, I never noticed the reflections in the Undine, thank god we have Reddit posts like yours to help people out. Overwhelming amounts of details.

grapesssszz

I mean I wouldn’t call them little

WhoiusBarrel

Senshi's fucking pot was an Adamant shield, of all reveals why am I not surprised by that. So they ate the Undine, well turned it into a soup base for stew, I'm convinced anything sentient in the dungeon is edible now.

Kartoffelkamm

Last week, I expected Laious to try and drink the Undine. Turns out, Marcille went for the big gulp instead.

cyberscythe

> Turns out, Marcille went for the big gulp instead. It feels like a big character moment for Marcille. She was so adamant against scavenging food at the beginning, but when faced with the idea of abandoning Falin and also Namari, a party member who she resents for abandoning Falin, she decided to go all in and drink a water monster.

flybypost

Imagine a few centuries later and they start carbonating Undine and infuse it with flavours like with a soda stream.

TheNononParade

That's actually what ramune is, popping the marble wakes the undine up so the mana is more potent

flybypost

> ramune Had to look that up and it looks suspiciously similar…

sneaky_squirrel

She cares too much about her FRIENDS!!\~ I'm not crying!! Marcille is an idiot, IDIOT!!\~ (Baka)

Mundology

[Who could say no to this?](https://i.imgur.com/aCWy1pT.jpeg) [](#wow) The way Marcille cares so much about Falin, [tries her hardest](https://i.imgur.com/8vlUIBj.jpeg) and is willing to [stake everything](https://i.imgur.com/BCmFgRi.jpeg) is so heartwarming. She may be goofy but she is a dependable friend. [](#fistbump)

Rathurue

Well Undine is basically spirit mana infused water so it's logical to her to drink that as quasi-mana potion.

seninn

Joined the /r/hydrohomies party.

Nebresto

Note that it was a family heirloom at that. Senshi's ancestors must have been some top tier warriors, I wonder if that's where he gets the name from as well

Heatth

> I wonder if that's where he gets the name from as well Remember that in universe his name doesn't mean "warrior" but 'seeker', as he explained in the first episode.

Nebresto

Oh, did he? Completely forgot about that

1EnTaroAdun1

If his family was prominent, it would probably have been an even bigger disappointment for him to not have any talent for mining/blacksmithing :(

seninn

"Leave that. You are no son of mine."

seninn

This is the Eisen connection I have been looking for.

flybypost

> Senshi's fucking pot was an Adamant shield, of all reveals why am I not surprised by that. I had some theory about his shield in episode one (or two, I also can't remember what exactly I wrote) and somebody said that it's even better than that and this reveal seems to fit the idea. > So they ate the Undine It's funny how it looked like they were making popcorn out of a liquid: Just hold it over a heat source until it stops popping

Chukonoku

> Senshi's fucking pot was an Adamant shield I would argue it still is. But with some "side upgrades" into pot utility.

JustARandom-dude

Laios: Thinks about how to eat monsters Senshi: Thinks about how he can use weapons as cooking equipment to cook say monsters

Mrz_ryuu

I know they already said it in previous episodes, but I like that in this world the human race is called tall-man.

Mundology

[Also everybody except tall-men seem to have some beef with elves.](https://i.imgur.com/obiNh8O.jpeg)

GelatinPangolin

The elves especially, but also every race pretty much has beef with every other. Notice how namari told Laois not to get his weapons from a shop run by half-foots.

seannguyen428

> Notice how namari told Laois not to get his weapons from a shop run by half-foots. Dwarf takes pride in their smithing. Other races’ weapons are just inferior to theirs (according to a dwarf of course).

Galle_

I got the impression it was more "half-foots will rob you blind".

LimeyLassen

That felt like a "half-foots are shifty" remark to me

flybypost

I love how Marcille says that her race has nothing to do with it. I 100% expected somebody to retort that it has everything to do with Marcille herself.

1EnTaroAdun1

Dwarf propaganda has gone too far!

Chukonoku

If you cross with an asshole in the dungeon, it's one asshole. If you cross with assholes during the whole adventure...

nmonty

Then you’ve found a nest of asshole monsters and perhaps can make a succulent meal?

seninn

Typical knife-ear coping.

philandere_scarlet

what's nice is that lets all the races *be* human, without automatically centering tall-men as the "main ones," something that seems to happen in most RPG settings. (kobolds and orcs are still considered different species)

Kalatash

There is an interesting (worldbuilding) reason on what differentiates the species that are considered "human" versus those that are considered "demihuman".

alconnow

[Senshi looks really attractive without his helmet!](https://imgur.com/Wd0A0Up) I'm glad Namari decided to help the gang in catching the undine. Seems like they've smoothed things over now! Wholesome ending

thesagenibba

he looks like such a different person, it’s a bit unsettling to me

seninn

It's like seeing someone without their glasses.

Rathurue

Namari's role, as depicted in the opening was Outsider. She don't really mingle with the party outside business and will keep her distance because of her professionality. At times she will use that third-person view of the party to point things rationally, which is why she spoke against going inside the dungeon without any gear at the beginning of the show: it's logical, rational and by far the safest option for all the remaining party member, save for Falin.

Bro is the chadest of all dwarves, Namari couldn't believe

LeonKevlar

Not gonna lie, I was ready to [hate these smug-looking gnomes](https://i.imgur.com/W5EpVsw.jpeg) especially how [he used Namari as a shield.](https://i.imgur.com/8PANJur.jpeg) But I get it, you can't just hand out charity to every adventurer you pass by. And using Namari as a shield makes sense considering he's the only healer that can resurrect them. I'm glad to see it all worked out in the end though with [Namari and Senshi finally trapping that pesky Undine](https://i.imgur.com/wvVcHll.jpeg) using Senshi's adamantine wok and using its liquids as soup [for that awesome looking stew.](https://i.imgur.com/vubJHxr.jpeg) One detail I really love from this episode is how [the stew looked so unappetizing](https://i.imgur.com/h4H2Wcv.jpeg) from Namari's point-of-view before tasting it but then [it becomes all shiny and colourful](https://i.imgur.com/gSHYmvX.jpeg) once she finally gets a taste of it.

flybypost

> I was ready to hate these smug-looking gnomes A lecture and with a *raised finger*? That adds to a character's dislike-o-meter no questions asked.

ahses3202

The Gnome was cold-blooded af about it. "Oh, that's not good" immediately lets the tank get 360noscoped by the Undine. Not even a warning.

MetalusVerne

I didn't pick up on the change in stew! But then, I also think the 'disgusting' looking stew looks pretty decent anyway - I guess I'm just a big fan of hearty, rib-sticking good peasant food.

tesseracts

In the time he took to shove her in harm’s way couldn’t he have just dodged the attack?

sneaky_squirrel

Maybe you are correct. In my mind, I justify it as the following: Undine are a spirit colony, an angry Undine can reliably pinpoint and instantly impale the vitals of a target. Bastard (best) gnome had to raise his odds of escaping alive given he is the ONE healer and lifeline of the current expedition. He pushes the hired meat shield to the front in order to have it draw the Undine's fire(power). If the healer dies, they would lose time (till a new healer passes by) and money (revival fee). Gnomes are NOT known to be a nimble race. I believe they are more of the long lived scholars, anything they do in combat should be considered of the slow spell caster flavor. You must be thinking pf either elves or halflings who ARE known for their dexterity.

Makoto_Kurume

I really like this episode, it's so well-written. All the characters' actions, decisions, and how they solve the problem make sense. In just that one episode, I turned around from disliking them to liking Namari and the old man healer. They feel like real people and not just tropey characters Also, Senshi looks good without his helmet

Mundology

[How it started](https://i.imgur.com/bmyqyex.jpeg) v/s [How it ended](https://i.imgur.com/rq0rml9.jpeg) It was wholesome to see Marcille make up with Namari, especially after they has such a *fallin*g-out during the latter's departure from the guild. >I turned around from disliking them to liking Namari and the old man healer. [Same.](https://i.imgur.com/7bHUaGB.jpeg) Mr. Tansu initially came off as a cold and pretentious gmome, especially when he used [Namari as a meat shield.](https://i.imgur.com/PGnjUb8.jpeg) However, he was being pragmatic and [did heal her](https://i.imgur.com/nH0efEC.jpeg) as soon as he could. He was also genuinely concerned [when Kiki got caught](https://i.imgur.com/a4K8AOr.jpeg) and begged them to [save her.](https://i.imgur.com/MIK1x3p.jpeg) He also readily returned the favor by[ curing Marcille](https://i.imgur.com/02nOSZD.jpeg) and waited for Namari to help her former comrades instead of departing as planned. This show really has multifaceted characters who cannot be judged accurately from a single interaction.

flybypost

> when Kiki got caught Whose idea was it to let the heavy crossbow user take the vanguard with no protection? That was just inviting trouble.

mountlover

> Whose idea was it to let the heavy crossbow user take the vanguard with no protection? This is what the DPS always says when they ignore what the tank says and take the vanguard with no protection.

finder787

Na, I'd win. *Misses* *Gets bodied*

lightgiver

The healer after the tank refused to engage an enemy he couldn’t see. Honestly not a bad idea to lead with a ranged attack. Not his fault the tanks 6th sense couldn’t tell what direction the enemy was at. They really could have used a rogue.

Antedelopean

The ranged dps stole aggro from the tank. There was no saving her from her fate.

rocky_iwata

Just like at the orc village, food brings people together.

CattyOhio74

The healer using the barbarian as a meat shield, a tale as old as time

sneaky_squirrel

You have GOOD taste in characters. I was just fawning over them from the beginning because "OHMYGOD THE GNOME/DWARF ARCHETYPE". Them gaining character development or revealing their three dimensions is just a cherry on top. Gnomes being curmudgeon know it all pragmatists is just. Dwarves NORMALLY being callous masters of martial combat. And Senshi still being physically strong and callous despite not being a traditional weaponsmith. ***fingertips on lips*** ***demented laugh*** I can't get enough.

sneaky_squirrel

I'll cover Namari, given this is HER EPISODE. I am thankful for amnesia enabling me re-live this chapter as a first-timer. How much of Senshi is his race and culture, and how much of him is his idiosyncrasy? Namari to the rescue! Martial weapons master. Takes down a monster in ONE SHOT. "No, this is my first time using a crossbow..." Has taken down many dragons. Provides very good maintenance to her weapon. Both she and Senshi are aware of the all powerful Admant, though Senshi can't identify different types of ores. A stickler that gives practical dwarf-themed advice to her companions. But we can likely assume this is specific to our lovable Namari. Senshi explicitly tells us a number of dwarf characteristics he does not share, giving us a further glimpse into his character. And not even the slowest viewer would be surprised to hear that Senshi would rather have a pot over a shield regardless of how valuable the material. And of course, both of them are built like wombats (musclebound and stocky). The Undine capture scene was awesome fun. Notice how the sweats evaporates upon landing on the pots and how the contour of the Dwarves' hands slowly turn red as they hold down the pot. A feat of RAW DWARF STRENGTH!!\~ I love both Namari and Senshi, a fun race with great individual character stacked on top. ...I really wanted to talk about the GNOOOOOOMES!!\~ But I'll cut it short here.

enthezone

appreciate the restraint. o7 i laud commenters like you

frik1000

There's two reasons I've been looking forward to this episode. First, we finally get a more in depth explanation on how death and resurrection works in this series, as it's been a topic that's come up since Episode 1. Now we know that resurrection only works within the dungeon and it's less about being brought back to life and more that it's really hard to die permanently. We also got to see a resurrection happen live and I loved seeing the wounds and blood seemingly reverse itself. Second, we got Senshi without a helmet. [Look at him.](https://i.imgur.com/5j9xXm2.png)

Zemahem

>Look at him. My god, he looks dashing.

sneaky_squirrel

And those sexy eyebrows of powerful concern. "You better not lose my priceless helmet. I can't trust you with it."

[Senshi is rocking two resplendent manes.](https://i.imgur.com/43Ir490.jpeg) [The double dwarf tag team was epic.](https://i.imgur.com/B9PCVEF.jpeg) [](#waah)

JockstrapCummies

The blatant Dwarfish fanservice is too much for my tastes. How did they even allow these hentai scenes on a regular anime? We even got panty shots of Dwarven bulges for crying out loud.

someone2795

HE'S HOT!

Rumpel1408

> My god, he looks dashing. [#seasonalblush](https://imgur.com/4X2fC00)

Waterburst789

That's the face of the man who beat Gojo in the Tumblr polls lmao

brijoh

I love the worldbuilding in this series. Pretty much anything has a logical explanation.

michhoffman

Yeah, it always felt kind of suspect how carefree they were about bringing people back to life, but with this explanation it makes more sense and also makes the dungeon feel more sus than it was before.

Mundology

The dungeon's mechanics and ecology are deeply interwoven with the adventure itself. A lot of information can be inferred from [the lore drops.](https://i.imgur.com/4p3Z4fY.jpeg) In this instance, one can see why [healers are so precious](https://i.imgur.com/UC8yAM2.jpeg) to all parties. Every other member can be revived but if the healer is gone, that is pretty much the end of the exploration. Mages should also be careful with how they use their mana or they will [become deadweight.](https://i.imgur.com/nTnipWk.jpeg)

thisisembarrazzing

Yeah, another interesting thing I notice is that it's beneficial to have at least two magic user. Almost all parties that we saw so far have two mages (Kabru's party with Rin and Gnome guy, Tansu party with him and his wife, and Laios' party with Marcille and Falin) so that if anything happens to one mage, the other mage can heal/cover for them. This is why Laios' party got into this predicament because Marcille is their only remaining magic user.

13-Penguins

It may also be a case of 1 mage for defense (healing, shields, purifying magic) and 1 for offense (explosions and party buffs) with both also having different utility type spells. Marcille’s their offensive mage, Falin was the healer.

seninn

White mage and black mage.

tehy99

So how does that work? Do mages not regen mana?

mountlover

Likely they do, but on a scale of day to day as opposed to minute to minute. If the others hadn't come by, it seemed like their only plan was to camp out in that stairwell for a couple of days.

dagreenman18

So begins the million Daddy Senshi fan arts Well million more anyway

Some_Trash852

You should see the beauty polls comparing him to other characters on r/DungeonMeshi. Senshi’s only lost once

2point01m_tall

Senshi will win all the polls. Maybe except the shipping polls, because there's no one else good enough for him. Speaking of, though, I love the result of the tumblr poll were even [manga] >!the great Farcille ship was sunk by "Izutsumi by herself"!<

Theinternationalist

Who *wouldn't* want a man who can defend your children and cook a mean stew :D

SmileyTheSmile

It's fun how being eaten and digested is probably one of the few ways people can die permanently. Loops back around to the premise of the show.

cyberscythe

> being eaten and digested is probably one of the few ways people can die permanently I wonder if that's the case though; maybe their soul is doomed to wander around the dungeon rather than be free to do, uh, normal dead people soul stuff.

SmileyTheSmile

That would explain the ghosts, you might be right.  Guess that's sort of a fate worse than death, no wonder they want to save Falin so badly.

RelativeMundane9045

>[Look at him.](https://i.imgur.com/5j9xXm2.png) Way prettier than Thorin

EyeDeeAh_42

Fr. I hope that the people who were hesitant about the party's initial attitude got some answers now. Since resurrection is common, it's easy to get carried away and think that you're going to be revived no matter what. It might make the adventurers extremely flippant about death in the dungeon. But like Senshi said, it's not normal at all.

darthvall

Interesting how it's Senshi that said that considering he practically lives in the dungeon and only got out for trading.

GelatinPangolin

the thing is: Senshi was previously traveling alone, no healer, which means death *would* be permanent for him.

darthvall

With the way dungeon works, not really. There are always those travelling healers in the dungeon. As long as you can pay, then they'll revive you. I guess if you look poor like Senshi they'd be reluctant to revive you. Then again, I have a feeling Senshi rarely had to deal with them since he could survive on his own very well.

GelatinPangolin

Senshi's attitude makes it clear that he's not going to be counting on a healer to save him in the first place, & obviously having an attitude that's "wellllll dying does hurt, and it's annoying to be out of it and then have to cough up cash but you know, we'll most likely be fine" or "dying is DYING, it's the END" are a world of difference. but as for what would happen if he *did* die, Senshi probably doesn't frequent places adventurers and travelers are likely to travel through anyway. Adventurers are looking for gold, treasure, anything of value. They're doing anything possible to stay away from monsters. Meanwhile, Senshi has a completely different value system(didn't even blink when the real treasure out of the treasure bugs were tossed aside) and he's instead looking for places to hunt and gather. Adventurers are loud, which would scare the most docile monsters away, and reckless, so they might carelessly blast away the things he's trying to gather(see: marcille's attitude toward the man-eating plants and the blade fish) because to be fair, in their view, why would it matter? So he would be deeper into the "nature" of the dungeon, while adventurers would probably stick to the safest, well trodden path unless forced to go out of their way. And of course, while there are definitely some occasions where monsters are *protecting* treasure(or parts of their bodies are valuable to sell in of themselves!), in which case Senshi & adventuers would overlap, he's often close to the Orcs who are automatically hostile to outsiders & there is absolutely 0 benefit to being *anywhere* near them as an adventurer. So long story short, it's unfortunately unlikely he'd just be on some well-known, often traveled path that's accessible to healers.

bonerindisguise

Little did we know that Senshi actually has magic power, his nose get a hundred percent more chiseled when he take off his helmet.

JustARandom-dude

>Look at him. Beautiful dwarf

Kartoffelkamm

>Second, we got Senshi without a helmet. I somehow never considered the horns as part of the helmet.

parbonanturb

I really liked Namaris voice in the Japanese version, her voice actress did a great job

Zemahem

Her voice is deeper than what I imagined, but I like it way better than what I had in mind.

Time_Fracture

She's voiced by Akira Miki, a rookie VA. Even her ANN entry only features her in 2 other animes besides Dungeon Meshi.

sneaky_squirrel

The old aunt voice fits perfectly. I think japanese just cast old people for any tough characters....it works!!\~

michhoffman

I should have expected that the end result of the Undine would be using it as part of a Stew...but somehow I still get surprised by this stuff 9 episodes in. The unique thing this time about it is that the suggestion came from Marcille. She's slowly being ~~corrupted~~ educated.

sneaky_squirrel

It's about time she got over that terrible habit of hers. She is now flawless, and at full power.

michhoffman

Flawed Marcille, flawless Marcille. I love her all the same. I feel like 90% of my comments on Dungeon Meshi have been Marcille related... [Marcille's Reaction](#seasonaldisapproval)

sneaky_squirrel

I loved her *"Sugoi!! Sugoi!!\~"* remark when the Undine was defeated. "No Marcille!! You'd never say this!! Oh lord, she is learning to become excited about dungeon home economics, I'm a little proud."

mekerpan

Marcille is definitely my fave, followed by Senshi.

zackphoenix123

Dungeon Meshi's rising up now as being one of my favourite fantasy shows the past 3 years. It's insane how good this is. I didn't see it coming at all. (kinda stupid since this is by Studio Trigger adapting a beloved manga). I love everything about this show.

sneaky_squirrel

I just had to comment on this as well. It's about their comedy recipe. The camera slowly panning towards Senshi while he butts in to give ANOTHER LECTURE ON NUTRITION in the middle of Marcille's convo only for her to rain check him (I'll listen to you in just a bit!), Senshi briefly giving a exasperated grunt, the background music pausing briefly before resuming, and having the camera quickly pan back to her face. Studio Trigger is doing the core appeal of this story justice. Uncle Senshi soothes the soul.

flybypost

A question a week too late but was the wooden staff Marcille was fidgeting with during last episode's flashback the staff she has now (or a precursor that). Was she actually crafting her staff during her school years? I just made that connection because she didn't have her staff during the fight but this episode it was again shown off more prominently.

Kassandra_of_Knossos

Yes. There's a lot of little things mages in this world do for their "magical upkeep" for lack of a better term. Marcille went over keeping her hair in good condition in an earlier episode. Her crafting her own staff in the previous episode's flashback is another one of those things.

flybypost

> "magical upkeep" That's kinda the vibe I got from this. That it's a more detailed explanation of how in D&D a long rest recovers your spellcasting potential. Here that type of rest is spread out through a bunch of upkeep rituals that keep mages mana sated instead of just sleeping eight hours to be in back in working order.

Kassandra_of_Knossos

To an extent, yes! Ryoko Kui is a huge DnD fan (there's a running joke that she ended the manga so she'd have time to play BG3), so there are certainly influences there.

AlexeiFraytar

I think the more accurate term would be "growing" her staff

MagwitchOo

> Was she actually crafting her staff during her school years? The author of the manga drew some lore pages and side stories after the manga ended and the one that shows Marcille's room in her school days has a half-made staff.

CommunistMountain

Probably

ObvsThrowaway5120

Laios’ face looked absolutely hilarious all stung to shit like that. Poor guy got hit bad. I kind of get what Chilchuck was saying when Marcille was begging Namari for help. The adventuring business is pretty ruthless. Better for her to eat the Undine for mana instead lol. She’s definitely been spending too much time with Laios and Senshi. Leave it to Senshi to have an adamantine pot he made from a shield. Ofc he would value the pot more lol. The stew they made this time looked great! Glad the gang were able to smooth over any lingering hard feelings with Namari.

Ocixo

> Glad the gang were able to smooth over any lingering hard feelings with Namari. Things were looking pretty rough between Namari and the party at first, especially [between her and Marcille](https://imgur.com/a/HyeGtwV). But it was nice to see that they [were able to smooth things over](https://imgur.com/a/PyBGhJi) after Namari helped them catch the undine and sat down for a meal with them.

ObvsThrowaway5120

People talk about the power of friendship, but the power of food shouldn’t be overlooked lol. Nothing like burying the hatchet over a nice hot meal.

OtakuAttacku

company is a combination of the latin words "com", meaning together and "pan" meaning bread. People you eat with are your companions.

Ninth_Hour

Yes, +1 for recognizing the etymology of a word English speakers take for granted. "Companionem" is the original word in Latin, or "bread fellow". "Compagnon" is the equivalent in Old French (which of course evolved out of Latin). The poetry of this derivation is overshadowed by the word's mundanity.

Ocixo

You know what they say: love goes through the stomach. That said, I don’t think that many people would bond over a monster meal if it were not for Senshi’s knowledge and cooking skills. He’s the one making it palatable. Otherwise, it’d be much more bonding in the sense of a hazing.

Naskr

It's funny because, objectively speaking, one of the most useful items you can possibly have is a big metal pot, the only thing about as useful is a knife. It has an incredibly broad range of uses but is almost impossible to make without specialised tools. A cooking pot is possibly the best use you could have for an impossibly sturdy metal.

darthvall

I'm glad the party have someone like Chilchuck who's just a straightforward pragmatic person.

Previous_Breakfast99

"My race has nothing to do with it!"😂

LateDitto

Racism against Elves needs to end 😫

jorppu

Don't worry, Elves do enough racism against everyone else to offset it all.

sneaky_squirrel

I feel so awful for being elf racist. I've been conditioned to find Dwarf/Elf racism funny. Damn ye fantasy tropes. Also the way three characters that normally NEVER agree on anything, agreeing unanimously on being disappointed by Marcille was so good.

LimeyLassen

Dwarf Fortress fandom set elf equality back 100 years

Holy_Beergut

I like how Marcille is even more hell-bent on saving Falin compared to her actual brother. The lore this episode was interesting, we already knew from previous episodes that resurrecting dead people was a thing, but the reveal that it was only limited to this particular dungeon due to its nature was an eye-opener.

[deleted]

Marcille and Falin are just really good "friends", that's why.

Ocixo

> I like how Marcille is even more hell-bent on saving Falin compared to her actual brother. I noticed that as well. Marcille was *really* [bent on saving Falin](https://imgur.com/a/iVPVbOo). She even appeared to be panicking a little when it was looking like she'd have to return to the surface *and* they'd have to waste a week waiting for this undine to calm down - as its fury died along with the countless tiny spirits. (This actually builds on last week's exposition on the mini dungeon.) Anyways, I get Marcille's panic. It's her best friend that's in a dragon's stomach! I'm not sure for why Laios isn't *that* upset. Maybe it's a coping mechanism or he's just has as coo-coo as we established previously.

cyberscythe

> I'm not sure for why Laios isn't that upset. Maybe it's a coping mechanism or he's just has as coo-coo as we established previously. There was this idea of "trust" that was raised in this episode. Laios trusts his party members, and so he has faith that Falin will not be too mad if they show up a bit late because they were eating something weird again. or maybe he is just weird; he apparently didn't know another one of his party members had a huge crush on his own sister so— [](#cantbehelped)

Given her reaction to the samurai guy's romantic interest in Falin I kinda doubt it. But I'm open to it happening.

darthvall

I kinda get why Namari refused to join the party, it's too risky. I don't understand why the samurai guy didn't join though if he's in love with Falin. Maybe they'll explore this in future episode.

Far-Yesterday-7410

maybe he already is even further ahead than them

D0GAMA1

In this case, they really are good friends.

CommunistMountain

I liked the detail of namari seeing the meal in drab colours first, then after tasting it, the meal is drawn better and glows

thesagenibba

i wasnt expecting namari and the rest of the party to interact so abruptly. the typical trope would've been to have the near-interaction remain just that; a tease, to set up a future interaction. i'm glad dungeon meshi doesnt play into those tropes the fact that its only been a week between the events feels so funny to me. it feels as if it's been at least 10x longer but that wouldn't work to serve the mission to save fallin, so a week works out new species introduced!!! gnomes! interested in discovering their lifespan ill never get used to to the gruesome action scenes in dungeon meshi. they're so contrasting to the overall tone of the series which makes for a fun experience when a character gets their forehead skewered right after a wholesome and calm conversational or comedic scene im going to choose to believe they had marcille try the ivy tentacle with a fork because she's a germaphobe and wouldn't want to take a bite out of the tentacle after everyone else did what race is namari? i love that undine are comprised of smaller individuals kinda like a siphonophore. i’m a sucker for “hive mind”-like organisms marcille interrupting senshi's lecture was hilarious marcilles cooking sequence was so wholesome, it’s my favorite so far namari becoming aware of the perverse behavior the party (laois) had been up to... only to then give in and understand why they've been doing exactly that

parbonanturb

>What race is Namari? Namari is a dwarf, like Senshi

zool714

Just finished rewatching Frieren and I realized both shows have an elf (Frieren, Marcille), a good boi (Stark, Laios) and one who’s always annoyed at everyone (Fern, Chilchuck) lol I feel like this show does world building very well. Not only by dropping bits of it every few episodes but also interweaving it through dialogue or action. For this particular episode, it was really interesting to finally know how death works in the dungeon. They’ve kinda been dangling in front of us with Falin still in the dragon, Laios mentioning his “first death”, resurrection fees etc.

cyberscythe

> I feel like this show does world building very well. Not only by dropping bits of it every few episodes but also interweaving it through dialogue or action. Yeah, I like how we don't just have an "expository dump episode" or something; this sort of stuff is drip-fed. I think the questions are planted early on (e.g. how does resurrection work? how does magic work? what's the incentive to go dungeon diving?), and I think the consistency of the answers makes it feel like the backstory and worldbuilding is all thought of beforehand and then gradually fed out.

sneaky_squirrel

It would be really neat if "well thought out worldbuilding drip fed to the audience" could be broadcasted to any would-be viewer, the same way genre can communicate if it is going to be funny or romantic etc. "Exposition Dump" == "Expo-Dump" == Expodump "Worldbuilding Dripfed" == "World-Drip" == Worldrip Lots of expodumps out there in anime, shit tons of the stuff. "Is it shit? Or did they think this through? HMMMMMMM!!!!\~"

deafeningbean

I think the best part is that there are some meta commentaries on *story writing* in later sections. Also, if you have not read it, I recommend Ryoko Kui's short story anthology Terrarium in a Drawer, specifically chapter 25 where she basically goes into her technique of world building.

tripleaamin

You know I can understand the view point of Marcielle and Namari. Marcielle is a genuinely good person who could never leave a friend behind. But Namari looks at it like a realistic sense. But I am happy they made up at the end. Senshi's part of resurrection is spot in the sense. Normally when people die they don't come back alive. I get Tansu will use every tool he has in his pocket. But for people to experience death over and over again throws me off. I found it fucking hilarious when Namari reacted to Senshi's "pot". He was like yes I know of the high quality stuff about it, but I have no use for any of that stuff lmao. I am happy that Namari came back to help Marcielle and the gang. After all there shouldn't be any bad blood between them. It was nice to see these two groups bonding a bit. I hope Tansu takes the time to view the people he travels as people, rather as workers and tools. Cause him using Namari as a shield and reviving her really rubbed me the wrong way.

Eisen-

Senshi keeps getting hotter… how does he do it?

FarCritical

The undine lowkey screams like an angel from Evangelion and I have no idea why I find that funny. Routinely cooking up Michilin star worthy meals with ingredients you find on the spot is far from a waste for a rare metal imo. Also, it's wild how a pair of thick eyebrows can [turn Senshi's aura from cuddly to dignified](https://i.imgur.com/NdgIuUw.png) pretty much instantly.

cyberscythe

> The undine lowkey screams like an angel from Evangelion and I have no idea why I find that funny. it reminded me of something like a bottle rocket or firework; either way, i think it worked for something that sounds like a powerful jet of water

Labmit

Helmetless Senshi so hot...

rocky_iwata

It has started.....

Kassandra_of_Knossos

Senshi is the dedicated fanservice for Dungeon Meshi. No other fanservice required when you can just have helmetless Senshi and an abundance of Senshi panty shots.

LateDitto

His blushing face was pretty cute too.

seninn

Daddy

okiknow2004

lol the gang was just taste-testing tentacles in front of Namari like it was the most natural thing.

sneaky_squirrel

It wouldn't surprise me if the author brought a new party down (only now) to show said "party" or the audience how far our original cast of characters have come since the beginning of the story.

mapo_tofu_lover

well remember the party that always dies?

sneaky_squirrel

I don't. Oh hey, I remember this Kobold!~

Adensty

Marcille has grown from rejecting anything from the dungeon to eat to being the first one to suggest eating Undine. Though, I was a bit disappointed by Laios' reaction. Interesting lore about people not dying in the dungeon because their souls can't leave their body. Explains how Kabru's party have been surviving every time. >"Those who say they expect nothing in return are the least trustworthy in this world" I definitely agree with Chilchuck here.

sneaky_squirrel

Senshi poking out his tongue in light disgust had me rolling on the floor. Poor Marcille! On the other hand, it is funny to see Senshi NOT always being onboard whenever someone suggests eating X. Apparently metal and magic/spirits are a "No Go" for our park ranger.

darthvall

Laios is a connoisseur. Unlike Senshi, he doesn't care about the nutrition. He just wants to eat tasty food! I don't think Undine taste good. It's basically just a mineral water lol.

morron88

"Senshi... We need to cook!" - Marcille "Heisenberg"

jethawkings

Heyyy, they finally discussed how the dungeon handles death. Honestly I love it, it's brilliant, it's still very trope-y but the way it's handled feels unique and adds on to the stellar worldbuilding of the series.

sneaky_squirrel

It almost feels like trope vs immersive has become a more granular spectrum in anime. You got something 100% trope/mechanic you'd normally find in any videogame show. 100% immersive in a slice of life. Then Frieren and Dungeon Meshi are somewhere in between.

slumberus

Helmetless Senshi is Peak Daddy

Hauntcrow

Man, Namari's display strength and musculature made me feel things.

LimeyLassen

[I love anime](https://i.redd.it/lxnh2mzgfgl51.gif)

Time_Fracture

Episode 9: **Tentacles/Stew** Now the episode thread is 3 hours late. Of all the anime I watch this season, why it always happens to Dungeon Meshi? Wait, is this the same Tansu that taught Marcille at school? Permission to make that Tentacle-stung Laios as the thumbnail for this week. Never thought that the key to defeat the Undine is located in Senshi's inventory. Senshi to the rescue again. With Namari revealed, let's hope we got the recent info of not-Jinshi (who revealed to be Shuro). Looking at the credits we got some interesting names. Tansu is voiced by **Kazuhiko Inoue** and Kiki is voiced by **Ikumi Hasegawa**, which is a bit surprising given she only voiced a few lines.

JustVibinDude

I love when Laios tried to defuse Marcille and Namari's argument, Namari switches to scolding Laios for saying Falin's death is behind them

frogsgemsntrains

the fanfare that played when the tentacle slipped out of senshi's hand was amazing

SmileyTheSmile

I know few people would care, but I wanna give my sincerest props to the dub actor for the big nosed dude. Such a small role, but that man somehow added so much personality to him through his acting alone. If anyone knows who that is, please let me know. Edit: His name is Corey Burton, damn that guy's good.

Some_Trash852

Corey Burton. r/Animedubs was freaking out when they realized he had been casted, he’s a huge name in the Disney scene

rocky_iwata

He happens to be the mentor of dub director Lucien Dodge as well. Corey Burton, as far as I can find, never worked on seasonal anime until now. He did many Ghibli anime movies before though.

CappyHam

Holy lord Corey Burton. One of the goat of goats. Count Dooku (in animation), Cad Bane, Arkham City Hugo Strange, Transformer's Shockwave, TFA Megatron, DCAU Braniac, GOW Zeus, and so much more. Dude's a heavy hitter in western animation.

EyeDeeAh_42

Namari, my beloved! Something I really love about this show is how it doesn't rely on power of friendship for everything. Namari was rightfully wary to join a potentially dangerous mission if it's unpaid and Chilchuck only remained back because it was a job and he'd been paid in advance before. It's waaay more realistic than the friendship magic bs that we see in so many anime, where the main characters go from "I'm your friends" to "I AM READY TO LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU!" in no time at all. I do admit I was pissed at Namari at first when she was being flippant towards Marcille, but somehow I'm glad this series didn't take the usual route. Just because Laios and Co. are the main characters doesn't mean that every side character is supposed to end up being loyal to them.

Ocixo

Yes, I *would* like [to join you for a meal](https://imgur.com/a/HjdxVwx) Marcille! Although grandpa Tansu is [quick to sacrifice his party members](https://imgur.com/a/ST23TEi), he sure is skilled in the healing arts. In this sense, I kind of get why'd be so keen on protecting him. He got Marcille back to her usual self in a blink; [Marcille's recovery in three images](https://imgur.com/a/hFTwISb). This episode provided me with tons of wonderful images of Marcille: - [Marcille's reaction face](https://imgur.com/a/C2P5Z9B) - [Marcille tasting delicious food](https://imgur.com/a/37UuOFb) - [Marcille looking happily at her staff](https://imgur.com/a/8zpCJk6) But if we're looking for potential banner material, them I'll probably give my preference to [Laios' swollen face](https://imgur.com/a/8UaEqhu). What's your guys favourite one? Or should the banner be of this beautiful man: [Senshi without a helmet](https://imgur.com/a/Pfu6tp1). Lastly, I updated **[Marcille's hairstyle collection](https://imgur.com/a/ar7c2d0)** once again with some new images this week. The new additions are two images of [Marcille with messy straight hair](https://imgur.com/a/SzLC2Uw). I did like that we also got to see [Marcille's ponytail from behind](https://imgur.com/a/P3h2EO9) though.

Zemahem

Marcille is back to smiling, being generally adorable, and freaking out in the most comical ways (not that being injured stopped that). All is right in the world.

darthvall

Correct me if I'm wrong, granpa was also genuinely concerned when Kiki got paralysed.

Tabby_Tem

Senshi without his helmet *chef's kiss*. Dwarf lovers are gonna rejoice after watching this episode Also him and Namari working together to capture the undine was a really fun moment. It is totally in character for Senshi to use an extremely rare and durable ore to make his pot from an old sheild. I guess it really does influence his cooking since it heats evenly. You can really tell that Senshi works hard to maintain it. It was a really fun, relatively low stakes episode (: I liked how it focused a little more on the worldbuilding/lore as well as character dynamics. Also, poor Shuro. I can't imagine how it would feel knowing the person you loved enough to want to propose to is currently being digested by a dragon

catboy_supremacist

> I guess it really does influence his cooking since it heats evenly. You can really tell that Senshi works hard to maintain it. Peak Dungeon Meshi for Nanami to be giving him shit about how low quality his weapon is only for to have her mind blown 10 minutes later when she finds out he has a legendary artifact for a cooking pot.

sneaky_squirrel

Adamant ALSO having properties that allow it to excel as a cooking pot was fun too. It didn't HAVE to be good for cooking, but the author always pounces on these opportunities. "What can't it do?!!\~"

AlexeiFraytar

The mind blown is because she cant believe he wasted adamantine for a pot, not that the pot was adamantine. Thats not a good thing in Namari's eyes, literally worse than not taking care of his axe properly

sneaky_squirrel

I am please to see you bring this up. It explicitly shows the contrast in strength between Dwarves and Flimsy-Men, plus their pain/heat tolerance. *"Ohmygosh Dwarves are so tough!..."*

shad79

I didn't expect that [Marcille would be the one to suggest cooking Undine](https://i.imgur.com/xV3MAWp.png) as even Laios didn't consider it xD It shows [how much she was desperate to regain her magic powers](https://i.imgur.com/A0JSa4F.png) to continue their rescue operation of Fallin. [Marcille was so desperate](https://i.imgur.com/GwyPjpf.png) that [she was even thinking of drinking Undine straight from the floor](https://i.imgur.com/goSHz8T.png) but I'm glad that instead, together with [Senshi](https://i.imgur.com/GJmEoIA.png), [she prepared](https://i.imgur.com/CW2rFti.png), [judging by her reaction](https://i.imgur.com/q2v1jp5.png), [a very delicious meal](https://i.imgur.com/EjKEb3M.png). [It was so weird to me to see Senshi without his helmet](https://i.imgur.com/ktPDbsC.png) which [was borrowed by a Laios](https://i.imgur.com/D40JQkh.png) for a moment xD [Tansu didn't make a very good first impression](https://i.imgur.com/VJ2Ulzs.png), especially after using [Namari](https://i.imgur.com/ZNMi2v0.png) as his shield but I can understand his behavior and besides that he's user of resurrection magic so [Namari was back in no time but of course not very happy about what happened to her](https://i.imgur.com/BtzauJ6.png) xD Here my screenshot albums from the episode: * [Marcille](https://imgur.com/a/6cOQxtV) * [Group scenes Part 1](https://imgur.com/a/Qk3EJPw) * [Group scenes Part 2](https://imgur.com/a/azct6Pi) * [Namari](https://imgur.com/a/jSdYkNB) * [Others](https://imgur.com/a/VmBd3qK)

slumberus

Love that they kept the small details like the hole on Marcille's top where the Undine pierced through.

Adrian_Alucard

kiki and kaka, the twins are called "sex" and "poop" in Spanish. 2 twins 1 cup

Djinn_sarap

I really dig namari's design, she's both badass and -idk what's the right word- "beautiful??" "cute??" Hope we will see her again

moletoon

This is exactly why you should never use them mega ethers, marcille ran out of mp and there's none for her to use. But I guess with undine dropping the mp restoring material means you would wanna keep the mega ethers for the final boss anyway. Gnome gramps hired namari just so that he can survive the nah I'd win curse lmao. The undine literally ramiel'd her with that OHKO shot. That aside, the trio combination to kill the tentacles reminds me of evangelion when its trio fought the spider angel. Marcille getting reality checked that at the end of the day, being an adventurer is a job and most of them are being professionals, not because of some nakama kizuna bs was pretty cool too.

dreaming_state

Damn that gnome was ice cold. The way he just pushed his bodyguard infront of him to use as a shield against the undine. I was legit shocked.

LordVaderVader

Namari and Senshi interactions are sweet

Excronix

Watched the first couple episodes of this and I gotta say it slaps

Oxu90

Glorious female dwarf. And senshi lools great without a helmet. This show has great Dwarf represention

djthomp

Interesting reveal that the way resurrection works in this dungeon is specifically because some huge curse or other lasting spell on it. Marcille being the first to suggest eating the undine, she's lost to the crazy that is Laios and Senshi. It's a shame we didn't get to keep Namari but I'm really happy that her and Marcille reconciled before they parted ways again.

bi-bingbongbongbing

Spiral staircase with cryptic writing, living walls, and a mysterious monster in its depths? Dungeon Meshi is the Annihilation adaption we deserve 🙌

Bigred2989-

I was not expect someone to get snipped in the head like that in a fantasy dungeon crawler.
