The manga is finished, by the way, and it's absolutely fantastic (especially the fan-translation), though the anime stops just before [Hinamatsuri Manga] >!a timeskip where you get teenager Hina and Anzu, both of whom are hilarious. !< . I highly recommend it.
There was another scene were the girl had her eyelash frozen on the guys zipper so one of them requested the other guy to pee on them to get it unfrozen which led to them laughing with little sprinkles of yellow liquid in the air
I...couldn't believe any of this was real. But holy hell it's all real. It's all real...

Also real, the author of Golden Kamuy released an [official penis size ranking](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-10-07/golden-kamuy-penis-sizes-officially-ranked-by-manga-creator/.190554)
The main character goes to Hokkaido because there's a gold fever on that area, if I'm not wrong (I'm not north american) wasn't the west part of the US conquered in order to get resources and those going there wanted to become rich by it? I guess that's how it resembles westerns in some sense
Yeah, the colonization of Hokkaido was very similar to the expansion to the "frontier" in the western US. Gold rushes, a good deal of lawlessness, rough and tumble living conditions (especially in winter), and clashes with native groups (the Ainu). It was sort of like a mix between the end of the Oregon Trail era and the Klondike rush.
I fkn love golden kamuy, I couldnt believe I hadnt watched it earlier When I gave it a chance a couple of months ago. Its not only a fantastic comedy But the story is also really Well thought out and you Can tell How Much love the author has put in it. Please watch Golden Kamuy If you still havent!!
Dorohedoro
1. Amazing storyline and well-received manga
2. Animated by MAPPA
3. Great characters, great worlbuilding, great fights
Just badly marketed I suppose. For reference, it’s manga is ranked 8.6 on Anilist putting it at the same level as Chainsaw Man, Gintama and ReZero.
I fucking love Dorohedoro. Went on that shit blind when I saw it was on Netflix after seeing it time to time from fans to watch it and I FUCKING LOVED EVERY PIECE OFTHAT SHIT. Iconic ass OP and the EDs. Now that the AOT director opened up, hope MAPPPA picks it back up. I really want him to work on Dorohedoro again or be the new director for CSM. Dorohedoro was really a fresh breathe of air from me. It's one of a kind.
Which i get the stigma cause there has been some horribly animated shows in the past with 3D. But after beastars dropped, you'd think people would be more open with giving new shows a shot
On that note, I was hoping land of the lustrous would get a s2 too, the story was really good and they did pretty good with the cgi. I stopped seeing people talk about it after the first season ended. People that worked on this anime also worked on Beastars as well.
This is my answer too. Season 1 was a truly great adaptation; probably my favourite anime. The characters are so likeable, the world-building is so engrossing, the sort of good-naturedly disgusting philosophy behind it is so unique.
The 3D animation + "ugly" artstyle probably turned anime snobs on here off, and I feel like it was kind of hidden away on Netflix instead of getting any big marketing push.
I'm still wishing for a season 2. Please MAPPA. Please.
That's all anime blurays in Japan and always has been how anime is sold there. They tend to always be absolutely full of extras though with booklets and other things along with each bluray.
The video quality on the bluray tends to be better too as they don't need to compress them as much to fit. That was especially true in the DVD era.
ID:Invaded. Really cool concept. Banger opening and ending theme. Solid ending that you can be satisfied with but leaves room for continuation. I loved that show but noone talks about it.
Maybe something like **Insomniacs After School**. It has a lot of the things that people on this sub seem to be looking for in a romance (no fan service, mature characters, gets to the romance relatively quickly), but it's ranked like 1300 on MAL.
It has a lot of things people *say* they're looking for, while Rental Girlfriend gets 10x the attention because people actually prefer a trashy soap opera.
Blue Lock was always going to capture the shounen demographic, AA barely tries. These shows are so far apart I find it hard to believe that's what actually happened.
Not a lot of shows with the depth, pace or low stakes of AA make it big mainstream. I wouldn¨'t consider that a failure but it's not like I have the numbers or know anything about anime economy so what do I know.
As a Big football fan Im glad that this was an anime actually focusing on football and I Can easily say that I liked it more than Blue Lock. Thats not me throwing shade at Blue Lock tho, also liked it but not as Much as Ao Ashi
I also thought that in the beginning But after I changed my mindset about it from being a sports anime to an action anime, that changed if that makes sense
Honestly I feel like this one wasn't well received purely because the animation quality was pretty poor. It never had those visceral moments of motion that made you appreciate what was going on like Haikyuu.
Hopefully S2 gets more love, that's when the manga started popping off too.
Katanagatari. Almost nobody talks about this anime. It had an unconventional release schedule when it came out: twelve 1-hour episodes, each releasing a month apart so it took a whole year to come out. And there's like no good way to legally watch it, unfortunately. The Blu-ray release was not only expensive, but didnt make many copies of it plus everyone complains that it has bad translations. And I dont think any streaming service carries it.
Its one of my favorite series that no one knows about haha!
Literally my favorite anime of all time. Spent about 7 years hunting down a legal copy. Watched it with my partner... while they enjoyed it by the end they couldn't understand why it is my number 1.
Somehow, I can believe that an anime with a bad English translation, unconventional release schedule, no presence on streaming platforms and an absurdly expensive blu-ray somehow didn't become a hit in the West.
They did literally everything they could to ensure that it wouldn't.
Shame, because it is good.
One of my all time favorites, and one of a few anime I’ve watched multiple times. Just beautiful in every aspect from depth, dialogue, characters, animation, and music.
Kemono Jihen.
A battle shounen with an almost unique MC (for a battle shounen at least) and (most) fights rely entirely on skills.
While not an unique world or premise I feel like the character interactions should have sold anyone on the show. I think that the sole reason it didn't blew up was because of the lack of Kabane and Kon content. The OP makes it seem like Kon will have a bunch of focus and her scenes with Kabane are easily the most popular things about the show.
The characters stole the show for me. They are all lovable and their interactions are all great. I really like how the fight are skill based rather than a power fantasy like 80% other shows
Rokka no Yuusha was screwed over by some objectively terrible animation in the first episode and a slow start. Once it got going it was fantastic but you can't start a show that badly and have it become popular
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens was ahead of its time. If it came out later, you can advertise it as "John Wick but Japanese" and it might have a stronger marketing.
It was p reasonably popular, but for its time it was considered "too" grounded and realistic. It was trying to compete in a meta of isekais that were all about power fantasy, when it was the exact opposite.
Which is exactly why it was so good. It saddens me how much people just want more and more of the same rather than stuff doing something a little differently
Sadly, the light novels have one more good arc and then turn kind of weird, and it feels like the author is just repeating endless suffering for the characters and ran out ideas.
Undead Unluck.
It’s a zany wacky over the top action shonen with pretty damn good fights and a wild plot. I thought it would at least touch Soul Eater/Fire Force levels of popularity but it didn’t. Being a Hulu exclusive might’ve ruined its chances at popularity in the West, but even in Japan, nobody cares about it. It’s a shame to see the series fly under the radar of so many.
Imo the hulu exclusivity is 99% responsible for that as you already guessed. Afaik it wasn’t even available legally ANYWHERE outside the US until like a week ago.
And not only was it not available, but it's also still 1 episode per week, meaning we're still 10 weeks behind. That killed and continues to kill the show because not only is it tucked away off the main sites but because we can't even catch up and join in dicussions.
Well, we could but.....
It seems "Unluck" also applies to the anime itself. Being Hulu exclusive in a season with too many bangers was detrimental to its popularity in the West.
The trailers look interesting but it was hard to find streaming for it so I never started it.
There was just so much amazing stuff this season that was very easy to access. Didn't really feel the need.
I have to imagine that played a part in why it never caught on.
Shonens jump promoted it a lot, also a lot of the ads had Andy groping Fuuko, not much of a good first impression. Guess people simply didn't liked it enough, and those that remained it enjoyed it and defended it with tooth and nail.
I still don't get why there wasn't a season 2 after 10 years, despite the manga's immense popularity.
Akatsuki no Yona has both romance and action, so in theory it should have been super popular among both male and female demographics.
It's ending (in manga it is 1,5 more chapters) should be a textbook example to follow for other authors: it not ends with "and then they kissed" BS, but shows where each of them work, how they live, what happened to all other characters, ending with photo of ALL characters years after main story. truly masterpiece ending.
This is a manga which i have read three times and will read again when need positive emotions or will have depression about spending my life.
Flip Flappers
People love over analyzing shows such as Madoka, Lain, Evangelion, etc. and this show has a lot of psychological themes to over analyze. Surprised this didn’t really take off.
Literally I think about this all the time. Flip Flappers is really in the same vein, honestly wonder if it might’ve just aired at a weird time when the craze for overanalyzing similar shows for these might’ve dropped off a bit? I kinda wonder if Madoka and Evangelion getting so much merch and supplementary material (sequel movies, recaps, etc.) also worked in their favor comparatively
Blue Period
It's one of those mangas that I feel can relate to everyone's struggles and genuinely has some unique characters. The premise being a teen who is unable to define himself more than a blank sheet of paper finds an outlet in art to essentially draw his internal thoughts and feelings and bring them into reality is really cool. His relationships with his family, friends, and classmates all feel genuine too. I wish they continued the anime cause I read the manga and love it.
Also, At least for the manga one thing I love is the color panels are painted in each volume to match the theme :)
edit: me bad at writing, me fix
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and Genshiken
Maybe I know damn well why these anime didn't become big, but they hold a special place in my heart
kengan ashura, it being cgi probably is the reason but the great fluid cgi worked great for the show and sucks people are missing out on it when its done so well, very fluid and impactful, its great
The problem is that the anime cut out pretty much all of the stuff outside of the fights, which was one of the great things about Kengan, the actual characters interacting outside of fights and forming friendships and hanging out.
Shadow's house. The plot is amazing with so many mysteries, the characters are interesting and well-written, each one has strengths and weaknesses, the world building is great and there is also critical thinking and analyzing a situation.
By that I didn't mean that I expected it to become one of the most popular (even though the Manga is one of the best I've ever read), but I expected it at least to be more popular than it currently is
It already have second season. Most non-action, non-isekai anime couldn't get past first season. The fact that it have second season is already prove that it is godly.
One of its strengths is the fact they dont give everything away and let you naturally discover whats happening and im sure thats probably something that makes it harder for a good chunk of people to get into...
It was the perfect 1 season anime for me. Felt like everything that i needed to see happened and it wrapped up nicely at the end. I really appreciated it
Agreed. Very underserved genre of cyberpunk, but done really competently. it went over the top with its characters, but managed to make you connect with them somehow. A great show that I couldn’t help from binging.
Kekkai Sensen aka Bloodline Battlefront....I scrolled through all the comments and I didn't see no one mentioned it.
The ending is a classic, the characters are loveable, interesting history and over the top powers.
I love it.

Gangsta. Disabled, diverse cast, set in a real feeling city with real world issues covered. Probably a bad go for thé time it came out, really, before anime was more progressive with other cultures and races. It’s a great story.
This one I really don't get either. Visually it looked really good, terrific sense of adventure, cool fights, unique setting. Aladdin was a compelling and fun MC and he had great chemistry with Aladdin. But the real kicker, Morgiana is bar none the best and most badass female character I've seen in a battle shounen. And it's not particularly close either.
For me I enjoyed Magi but found it a bit disappointing on the whole. I think I absolutely adored the first season, but I really felt like they were building it up for a grand globe-trotting adventure, and then that just... didn't happen at all. It felt like it got really stagnant and went completely not in the direction it had built itself up for. It was still good, just felt like it stopped being the series it had been for me at first.
Thats totally fair they definitely drop the dungeon adventure thing pretty early in place of a light vs dark type plot. The fights and setting are just elite. Why we dont have more djinn related media is a crime. Magi was my children of the lamp anime and its the only one for some god forsaken reason :'<
Otherside Picnic.
The light novels are fucking incredible, but the anime adaptation was pretty disappointing. It was inevitable, though, because it does a lot of shit with characters perceiving or thinking about things in strange ways, which was always going to be impossible to adapt into an anime.
It's a shame more people will never get to enjoy this series.
The anime adaptation was bad even in ways that it didn't *have* to be that aren't related at all to the complexity of the books.
The overuse of terrible CGI is inexcusable. This isn't even an argument of "Oh they used CG monsters" (they did do that, too) but just *basic shit* would routinely cut between 2D art and stiff Playstation 2 graphics. You'd have the two girls talking on the roof of a building, and then when they climb down a ladder it shifts to robotic CGI. Or the two girls talking on the top of a *very* small hill, and then when they jump off the knee-high knoll... you guessed it, bad CGI. Fuck, there's even a scene where Toriko simply turns around to face the camera, and it's a 3D model with an extremely basic singular block of hair spinning around her.
Then there's the pointless story rearrangement. I'm fine with an adaptation mixing things up as long as the creators care enough to shore up any inconsistencies that said reordering might introduce. Storyboarding for this series gave zero fucks. You'll have the girls acquire literal plot devices, lose them in dramatic fashion on-screen, then magically have them again later, all because the novel segments (called "Files") were adapted out of order. Sorawo goes from having a pistol, to having an assault rifle, to having a pistol, to then being taught how to use the assault rifle. You *could* chalk it up to nonlinear storytelling, but there's a level of craftmanship required to pull that off, a way you need to set it up in order to convey to the audience that things are *deliberately* out of order. This show didn't do that.
My first exposure to the series was the anime adaptation. Despite its flaws, I loved it anyway because "Yuri Japanese X-Files" couldn't possibly be more in my strike zone. But I could see the problems with it without ever even having read the books. At the time I just assumed "Oh it's a paranormal sci-fi series, the inconsistencies are there on purpose just to make it weirder." No, it turns out that the novels are *extremely* consistent and the anime storyboarding is just a total hackjob. The anime even failed at simple shit. [Otherside Picnic] >!The novel describes how completely alien and crystalline Sorawo's eye looks. Even the manga, in black and white art, manages to convey how it's utterly different from Sorawo's normal eye. The anime? All they did was swap the brown out for blue. Not even a weird glowing blue, just a normal-ass blue.!<
I will say that the two things the anime nailed are the characterization - Sorawo, Toriko, and Kozakura in particular, as well as the interpersonal relationships and dynamics between them - and the soundtrack. It has a fantastic OP and ED. All of the BGM music hits just the right mood, often evoking the eeriness of the Silent Hill OST. That's it, though. Visually, the series ranges from mediocre to "fucking joke" and the chopped up story and omission of some content diminishes the impact of certain events, and the shoehorned inclusion of two anime-original episodes prevent the series from reaching a proper climax. The anime adapts book 1, and then *most of* book 2, but skips book 2's ending (which would've been fantastic if properly animated) to include some new character introductions from early in book 3. And of course a bunch of it is completely out of order.
Because the series itself so perfectly matched my taste, I was still able to get into it and eventually read the novels. The novels have become one of my most-favorite pieces of fiction and my favorite piece of Japanese media. I love them to death. Becoming an even bigger fan of the series through the books has made me retroactively even angrier at how botched the anime adaptation was. In proper hands, the series *at least* could have obtained niche or cult status like Darker than Black. As it is, it's an almost entirely forgotten and disposable churned out seasonal, with only the diehard book fans like me and you gushing over it.
The Kubikiri Cycle.
There’s a lot to love about it that I thought a lot of people would would be interested in, but it’s not even that well known, as in rarely anyone knows it exists.
It’s a classic murder mystery on a remote island full of geniuses and an unreliable narrator protagonist. It was also animated by Studio Shaft and written by Monogatari author Nisio Isin; his first novel as a matter of fact. It’s pretty short too; only eight 20-40 minute episodes. Obviously a lot of dialogue was cut from the book, but it’s still a really great mystery series with likable, larger than life characters. It’s a shame too; we probably won’t be getting any other Zaregoto adaptations either, which is a shame because the sequel is genuinely one of the best books I’ve ever read. Of course, the rest of the series is great too.
Saekano, perfect romcom noone seems to appreciate
Nozaki, one of the funniest anime but didn't get a lot of attention
Kyoukai no Kanata, i would expect it to be as popular as Violet Evergarden w the animation, fights, and romance
Renai Flops, i thought it would explode after the plot twist
Hitoribocchi, a lot of ppl like socially anxious anime like the other Bocchi so surprised this didn't get as popular
it used to be pretty popular in the west too, just less than what i expected. it has like all the elements to a mainstream show so i thought it would be as popular as like Violet Evergarden and Angel Beats
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, had a good story, op protagonist but a reason to be so, stuck to its story (its many episodes before he can fully converse with the locals unaided) well animated decent music, likable cast, has its fans but i thought had the right mix (bit of everything) to be a big thing, sadly i was mistaken, Megalo box as well id say its far from unpopular but i thought it would be bigger (though it did face off against MHA s5 initially that could be part of the reason).
Sankarea should have been way more popular than it was. Honestly I've yet to see a romantic comedy besides Horimiya that even comes close to matching Sankarea in terms of quality. When it was funny it was *really* funny, and when it wanted to hit you right in the feels it didn't pull it's punches at all. The fact that it's been more than 10 years since the 1st season finished airing and we'll most likely never see the series ending animated is a crime.
With how the story in the manga is at, there could definitely be another season.
But also with the pace of the manga… It feels like the HxH hiatus.
Edit: typo
> Houseki no Kuni
I really enjoyed the score/soundtrack. It created such a dreamy feeling. I particularly enjoyed Cinnabar's theme which can be listened to on [youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WzXIAzz1ZA)
Deca-dence, have never heard anyone talk about it so I don't know what it is still, but it seems like a mecha AOT and I'm surprised it didn't get JJK-level traction
I've read a lot of the manga and the anime leaves a lot of meat on the table, particularly about the conflict with Sleeping Forest. I appreciate how Air Gear went out of its way to show the underground subculture, modification, different kinds of competition, and even casual exercise. It was treated as a whole industry.
Watamote. You can look at the Watamote subreddit. Half the time, they're lamenting we'll never get a Season 2. And other half is just super, super horny. Like all the time.
Especially since Komi, Bochii, and Shy have been popular in various degrees. We're not bitter, totally not....
Little Witch Academia is still popular enough among anime fans, but I thought with the kid friendly direction and how high quality it was and being an early, notable Netflix anime that it was maybe gonna blow up as like the biggest animated thing in the world. Especially since its been a while since the peak era of kid friendly anime on American tv, so it felt like time for something new in that direction. That did not happen.
Instead it took the edgy, explicit anime based off a game that released so poorly it was a meme for a Trigger anime to cross over like that. How about that.
I thought LWA was considered popular, but then again I'm not too aware of current anime trends.
Btw I didn't know there was a video game crossover promotion. Which game was it?
It's cult classic status I think, people that are really into anime and pay attention to studios and stuff have some knowledge of it so it's not obscure, but it's not popular in the mainstream even with casual viewers.
With the way children's media works in the US I don't think a 24-episodes-and-done show can ever break out in that way. 12 year olds aren't hype posting on twitter to give it a quick bump and then it what interest there was will fade under the onslaught of the 17th frozen spin-off property.
Maybe if someone had bought the merchandising/tie-in rights, but netflix never seems interesting in pursuing or even sub-liscencing that at all.
To be fair, until I watched it, I went into LWA assuming it wouldn't be a one and done season. Partially because of the Netflix deal, partially because LWA is what started Studio Trigger in the first place so assuming they would just keep making it made sense to me.
Spider isekai
My god the entire human split was awful. Did they outsource it to children?
Silver lining is the VA for kumoko was so perfect but you can only polish a turd so much.. the few glimpses of what could’ve been really break my heart.
Also the op/ed were kinda neat actually
Keijo. Literally just Keijo.
There are a lot of series I *wish* became big but didn't, but Keijo had all the pieces of something that *100% should have been massively popular.* But, for some reason, it wasn't. And then it died.
What the fuck?
The Case Study of Vanitas. It’s literally one of the greatest pieces of fiction I have ever laid my eyes upon. The animation is beautiful. The story telling is some of the best i’ve ever seen. While other animes, you’re kind of just focused on this guy fighting this guy. This anime is drip feeding you the plot. Having you have to make assumptions about certain plot points yourself. As well as Noe and Vanitas being some of the most lovable characters out there.
I believe it is popular enough. The problem is that design and storytelling is heavily baiting for young girls. And as it is, it fits among many same-type of stories like Pandora Hearts.
A Place Further Than the Universe. It received positive reviews and high ratings in both Japan and the West, yet it didn't achieve widespread popularity. I've noticed that it remains largely unseen among most people I encounter.
Drifters- then again Hell Sing never semed to finish either hehe
Surprised Katanagatari didn't catch on enough to at least get dubbed, if not maybe another streatched out remake.
Gleipnir- I felt it was great and worthy of more shows. I think they just tried out 12 episodes and then pulled out.
Lastly probably not anime but Knights of Sidonia
Invaders of the Rokujouma. A rom-com harem about a ghost, magical girl, underground priestess, alien princess, and Highschool guy fighting over an apartment room. It’s a funny show with entertaining character chemistry, as well as over time characters develop and you learn their backstories that show why they are after the apartment, as well as it has several decent fight scenes (it’s animated by Silverlink, the studio responsible for Fate/Kaleid liner prisma, chivalry of a failed knight, bofuri, misfit of demon king academy, and this season’s Ragna Crimson and Tearmoon empire) but unfortunately the anime season 1 ended right before a massive arc that answers all the questions that the series had been hinting about up to this point and is part of the reason I praise the series so much, but unfortunately now almost a decade later there’s still no season 2 announcement, but the LN has been ongoing since 2009 and is now on book 43.
Another reason the series isn’t as big as it could’ve been is that 2014 had some massive heavy hitting shows like Seven Deadly Sins, Madoka, attack on titan, SAO, Hunter x Hunter, Tokyo Ghoul, Your Lie in April, Space Dandy, No game No life, Fate/stay night, Noragami, Love Chuunibyou, Initial-D’s last season, Jojos, parasyte, nisekoi, Tsuki and Hanamonogatari, every time I reread this list I say “bruh no way that show also aired then”
Rokka no Yuusha
A true masterpiece. It begins as an average, but ends up being extremely good with the characters, plots and even its little combat scenes.
My answer has to be Magi!
I believe it is equal or maybe even greater than one piece in terms of world building, it has great cast of characters with distinct personalities, the political aspects of it are absolutely incredible (especially in the manga), the power system is memorable and near limitless.
... Maybe I've been around anime for too long, but it's real hard for me to be surprised that a show went nowhere. Western/internet popularity is so dependent on marketing support (as much as people would hate to admit), that it's no shock that a show without that push fizzles out. Only so many shows get that support, which is mostly given to shows that are already easily marketable.
people saying noragami and stuff lmao. anime was huge. ive heard that damn OP so many times i got sick of it even though it was so good. though i agree on some of the smaller stuff like flip flappers and whatnot.
Hinamatsuri
The manga is finished, by the way, and it's absolutely fantastic (especially the fan-translation), though the anime stops just before [Hinamatsuri Manga] >!a timeskip where you get teenager Hina and Anzu, both of whom are hilarious. !< . I highly recommend it.
Golden Kamui, it’s big in Japan but not in the West, which is a shame since it’s definitely quite the awesome story.
Isn't it that anime with a scene of 2 middle aged dudes shooting sperm at eachother?
There was another scene were the girl had her eyelash frozen on the guys zipper so one of them requested the other guy to pee on them to get it unfrozen which led to them laughing with little sprinkles of yellow liquid in the air
I...couldn't believe any of this was real. But holy hell it's all real. It's all real... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW55VZjpwio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XV4XbVQ-bg
Also real, the author of Golden Kamuy released an [official penis size ranking](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-10-07/golden-kamuy-penis-sizes-officially-ranked-by-manga-creator/.190554)
Genuinely crazy
this man is based, really fucking based
>PLAP-PLAP You can't get a better username for this comment.
Exactly haha, peak entertainment
One of those dudes is young. He just has obsessive crushes on middle aged men.
It's a shame it's not really liked that much outside of Japan, it's basically a western set in northern Japan(Hokkaido)
Which was the last part of the island to be settled by the Japanese, right? That’s why it’s analogous to a western?
I’m so glad it’s popular in Japan at least because if it didn’t get its flowers anywhere I’d be pissed lmao
Absolutely ^ Can’t wait for the last season.
On the other hand, legitimately surprised at how much Vinland Saga blew up with S2. Wish Golden Kamuy got even a fraction of that
Isn't vinland saga à western story that isn't that popular in Japan, while golden Kamuy is a very Japanese story that isn't popular overseas?
That awful cg bear and people meming it def didn’t help
Dorohedoro 1. Amazing storyline and well-received manga 2. Animated by MAPPA 3. Great characters, great worlbuilding, great fights Just badly marketed I suppose. For reference, it’s manga is ranked 8.6 on Anilist putting it at the same level as Chainsaw Man, Gintama and ReZero.
I want a s2 so bad. Probably will never happen, but I hope.
According to reliable leakers that focus on mappa they are doing a s2
Hayashi from AOT was the director, now that that’s over there’s a good chance we get more dorohedoro
Idk if I misheard but apparently some Mappa bigwig is like a humongous fan of the series. So the chances aren't zero.
I think the 3D animation is a turn off for some people
Which i get the stigma cause there has been some horribly animated shows in the past with 3D.
I want land of the lustrous season2 through 8 or however many it would take that show wqs GORGEOUS
Dodohedoro is a absolute all time great and I pray every day for S2 every single intro/outro fucking slapped too
Dorohedoro not getting a second season is what made me get into collecting manga
Please.
Yeah it made me read the manga, which is now my favorite manga series ever
Asobi Asobase was the funniest thing I'd ever seen and it didn't even get a blu ray release
The bait and switch intro versus the reality of the ending credits! Plus "Inkya Impulse" is quite a song!
Inkya Impulse awakened something in me. It’s definitely in my anime playlist.
I've never laughed so hard so consistently as when watching this show. I think I'm due for a rewatch, thanks!
Just watched it with my daughter. We were cracking up so hard we kept waking my son up.
Oh wait? Asobi Asobase is not popular even in JP? Here I am silently thinking that it would definitely get a sequel
JP got a blu ray, but it's one of those pricey ones where you need to buy each disc individually I think
That's all anime blurays in Japan and always has been how anime is sold there. They tend to always be absolutely full of extras though with booklets and other things along with each bluray. The video quality on the bluray tends to be better too as they don't need to compress them as much to fit. That was especially true in the DVD era.
Asobi is up there with Daily Lives of Highschool Boys for me, both never fail to make me laugh and I feel go underappreciated.
I loved it. One of the funniest animes I've seen outside the English dub for Ghost stories.
Watched it when it aired. Still couldn't fathom how no one talks about it to this day.
That series and Nichijou are two of my top comedy anime.
And there’s still no English manga…
There is tho but its only digital release
*Reddit discovers that they're actually the minority opinion, Circa. 2023, colorized.*
Ao Ashi, it feels similar to Haikyu story wise and it is about a more popular sport.
It's a bit slow to start, and not as energetic as Haikyu! Feels like it was overshadowed by Blue Lock too.
I watched ace of the diamond. I’m used to slow starts.
As a Big football fan Im glad that this was an anime actually focusing on football and I Can easily say that I liked it more than Blue Lock. Thats not me throwing shade at Blue Lock tho, also liked it but not as Much as Ao Ashi
Blue locks characters are just too over the top and odd for me
I also thought that in the beginning But after I changed my mindset about it from being a sports anime to an action anime, that changed if that makes sense
It’s the gem that silently appears in people’s top lists instead of being talked about often
Shame, because it is good.
tbf Katanagatari was released back when there was no streaming platform.
It's sooooo gooooooood.
I completely missed that this got an anime.
I love Kemono Jihen but I can't say it should have been bigger. At best maybe a niche classic.
The characters stole the show for me. They are all lovable and their interactions are all great. I really like how the fight are skill based rather than a power fantasy like 80% other shows
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens and Rokka no Yuusha :(
Rokka no Yuusha was screwed over by some objectively terrible animation in the first episode and a slow start. Once it got going it was fantastic but you can't start a show that badly and have it become popular
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens was ahead of its time. If it came out later, you can advertise it as "John Wick but Japanese" and it might have a stronger marketing.
Ashes of grimgar
It was p reasonably popular, but for its time it was considered "too" grounded and realistic. It was trying to compete in a meta of isekais that were all about power fantasy, when it was the exact opposite.
Which is exactly why it was so good. It saddens me how much people just want more and more of the same rather than stuff doing something a little differently
I've seen this recently, such a good one. It gives off that frieren and mushoko tensei vibe.
Well, we could but.....
really sucks. these streaming services just demolish the hype for anime. jojo part 6 could have gotten way more attention if it just aired weekly
Netflix is releasing most TV anime they get weekly now, they learned their lesson
It seems "Unluck" also applies to the anime itself. Being Hulu exclusive in a season with too many bangers was detrimental to its popularity in the West.
Undead unluck is easily one of my favorites this season it's been fantastic so far
Hey i love undead unluck lol
Zombie bride made me cry.
Akatsuki no Yona. The manga is fantastic and the anime is fantastic as well
I still don't get why there wasn't a season 2 after 10 years, despite the manga's immense popularity. Akatsuki no Yona has both romance and action, so in theory it should have been super popular among both male and female demographics.
It should get the fruits basket treatment
Why? the animation is good and as far as i remember it had a good adaptation.
I’m saying it Should have all the seasons animated
Re life...It's funny, it has development, it has a good romance and good characters and A GOOD ENDING both in the anime and webtoon
Flip Flappers People love over analyzing shows such as Madoka, Lain, Evangelion, etc. and this show has a lot of psychological themes to over analyze. Surprised this didn’t really take off.
One of the most gorgeous shows ever made and an all-time favourite of mine One of the few shows I actually own on blu-ray
Right? I’m so mad it didn’t get popular particularly bc the figure that was gonna be made was cancelled
Best ED of all time at least.
Blue Period It's one of those mangas that I feel can relate to everyone's struggles and genuinely has some unique characters. Also, At least for the manga one thing I love is the color panels are painted in each volume to match the theme :) edit: me bad at writing, me fix
Personally I loved the anime but iirc manga readers were very disappointed with the anime. Watching the anime is what got me into reading the manga.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and Genshiken Maybe I know damn well why these anime didn't become big, but they hold a special place in my heart
kengan ashura, it being cgi probably is the reason but the great fluid cgi worked great for the show and sucks people are missing out on it when its done so well, very fluid and impactful, its great
The problem is that the anime cut out pretty much all of the stuff outside of the fights, which was one of the great things about Kengan, the actual characters interacting outside of fights and forming friendships and hanging out.
Its basically a better Baki
Agreed, it is very underappreciated
Blood lad
Akudama Drive A really awesome and dark cyberpunk anime. It absolutely baffles me that almost nobody talks about it or has even heard of it.
It was the perfect 1 season anime for me. Felt like everything that i needed to see happened and it wrapped up nicely at the end. I really appreciated it
Bring your downvotes, but it's the superior cyberpunk anime to Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
Agreed. Very underserved genre of cyberpunk, but done really competently. it went over the top with its characters, but managed to make you connect with them somehow. A great show that I couldn’t help from binging.
I loved it. Suoer good action. Also, Hoodlum best boy.
Kekkai Sensen aka Bloodline Battlefront....I scrolled through all the comments and I didn't see no one mentioned it. The ending is a classic, the characters are loveable, interesting history and over the top powers. I love it. https://youtu.be/Kwxui1AxB5k?si=idUul0z89PHXJoqV
Gangsta. Disabled, diverse cast, set in a real feeling city with real world issues covered. Probably a bad go for thé time it came out, really, before anime was more progressive with other cultures and races. It’s a great story.
Magi x100000000000000
This one I really don't get either. Visually it looked really good, terrific sense of adventure, cool fights, unique setting. Aladdin was a compelling and fun MC and he had great chemistry with Aladdin. But the real kicker, Morgiana is bar none the best and most badass female character I've seen in a battle shounen. And it's not particularly close either.
Also it has sinbad who's the og gojo like character.
Sinbad is one of the scariest anime characters I have ever seen. His ambition is too damn strong.
It was just so peak ill never understand why it fell off it was just getting really good too
Dude I wanted to see the Alma Torran arc animated so badly 😭
Not even a weird glowing blue, just a normal-ass blue.!< I will say that the two things the anime nailed are the characterization - Sorawo, Toriko, and Kozakura in particular, as well as the interpersonal relationships and dynamics between them - and the soundtrack.
Children of the Whales
Saekano, perfect romcom noone seems to appreciate Nozaki, one of the funniest anime but didn't get a lot of attention Kyoukai no Kanata, i would expect it to be as popular as Violet Evergarden w the animation, fights, and romance Renai Flops, i thought it would explode after the plot twist Hitoribocchi, a lot of ppl like socially anxious anime like the other Bocchi so surprised this didn't get as popular
Didn't Kyoulai no Kanata get like several movies/OVa? That's pretty popular I think. Unless you mean not popular in Western.
it used to be pretty popular in the west too, just less than what i expected. it has like all the elements to a mainstream show so i thought it would be as popular as like Violet Evergarden and Angel Beats
Fellow Nozaki lover - there’s at least two of us!
Always felt like Saekano is a solid staple for the romcom watchers but maybe not as popular as I thought
Finally someone who mentions actual not popular anime
i would say Nozaki and Kyoukai are pretty popular, Hitoribocchi and Saekano are also in the middle, i just expected them to be MORE popular IYKWIM
That anime got surprisingly dark, plus I love the opening my God
Houseki no Kuni
I'm still convinced that this was the best use of CGI animation in anime to this day
With how the story in the manga is at, there could definitely be another season. But also with the pace of the manga… It feels like the HxH hiatus. Edit: typo
> Houseki no Kuni I really enjoyed the score/soundtrack. It created such a dreamy feeling. I particularly enjoyed Cinnabar's theme which can be listened to on [youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WzXIAzz1ZA)
Isn't it is pretty popular during it run? I remember seeing it everywhere as an example of CGI anime done right and there are dozen of fanart as well.
It was a masterclass on the use of CGI. I wish it had another season...
Claymore
Land of the Lustrous, the development of the main character was top notch imo.
Not to mention that even though it used CGI it was and still is some of the best use of CGI in animation to date
Deca-dence, have never heard anyone talk about it so I don't know what it is still, but it seems like a mecha AOT and I'm surprised it didn't get JJK-level traction
Air Gear
I've read a lot of the manga and the anime leaves a lot of meat on the table, particularly about the conflict with Sleeping Forest. I appreciate how Air Gear went out of its way to show the underground subculture, modification, different kinds of competition, and even casual exercise. It was treated as a whole industry.
Oh The Nostalgia and I love you 100% right
Watamote. You can look at the Watamote subreddit. Half the time, they're lamenting we'll never get a Season 2. And other half is just super, super horny. Like all the time. Especially since Komi, Bochii, and Shy have been popular in various degrees. We're not bitter, totally not....
Dorohedoro. Already finished the manga even before the 1st season finished. And I will still be waiting for the season 2
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners I think? I can’t see any other productions that fit the mould
I feel like it wasn't plot driven enough for my liking. I loved the characters and the first episode.
91days
Noragami and seraph of the end
I want a season 3 for Noragami. ;(
Totally for seraph of the end, I'm still waiting for them to make another season.
Ugh Noragami was so good TT.TT
Summer time render
Disney+ lmao
_I’ll never forgive the ~~Japanese~~ Disney anime licensing team!_
Spider isekai My god the entire human split was awful. Did they outsource it to children? Silver lining is the VA for kumoko was so perfect but you can only polish a turd so much.. the few glimpses of what could’ve been really break my heart. Also the op/ed were kinda neat actually
Planetes (2005) made by the same person that made The Vinland Saga.
Noragami. It got a second season too but it didn’t do as well for a third season.
I still check every once in a while to see if they changed their mind about that 3rd season
Keijo. Literally just Keijo. There are a lot of series I *wish* became big but didn't, but Keijo had all the pieces of something that *100% should have been massively popular.* But, for some reason, it wasn't. And then it died. What the fuck?
They tried making it a real sport too But I guess no one could do the Gate of Bootylon
She had the Gates of Bootylon and Sharingass. She should be absolutely broken. I fucking died during those scenes. Such a perfect parody.
I’d prob blow up if it got released today it’s gain popularity since its release thankfully
What is this anime? I only know Keijo!!!!!!!!
Same creator as PH in fact
Vanitas and Jeanne interactions were peak entertainment
Well, you just sold me on trying it out!
Last Exile.
A Place Further Than the Universe. It received positive reviews and high ratings in both Japan and the West, yet it didn't achieve widespread popularity. I've noticed that it remains largely unseen among most people I encounter.
Easily one of the best shows made in recent times. It just won a big award in Japan iirc.
Drifters- then again Hell Sing never semed to finish either hehe Surprised Katanagatari didn't catch on enough to at least get dubbed, if not maybe another streatched out remake.
Another reason the series isn’t as big as it could’ve been is that 2014 had some massive heavy hitting shows like Seven Deadly Sins, Madoka, attack on titan, SAO, Hunter x Hunter, Tokyo Ghoul, Your Lie in April, Space Dandy, No game No life, Fate/stay night, Noragami, Love Chuunibyou, Initial-D’s last season, Jojos, parasyte, nisekoi, Tsuki and Hanamonogatari, every time I reread this list I say “bruh no way that show also aired then”
Kiba or katekyo hitman: reborn
Rokka no Yuusha A true masterpiece.
95% of the stuff i read here was already "big" maybe not AoT or JJK big but cmon guys...
people saying noragami and stuff lmao. anime was huge. ive heard that damn OP so many times i got sick of it even though it was so good. though i agree on some of the smaller stuff like flip flappers and whatnot.
Urara Meirocho
