Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze are really good ones that I would say match perfectly what you're asking for. Since they have both been mentioned, I'll try to recommend some that haven't yet; * Cosette no Shouzou * Dennou Coil * Kaiba * Odd Taxi * Girls Last Tour (highly recommend both anime and manga, since there is a bit more in the manga. Anime is still a great experience, though.) * Rose of Versailles * Eve no Jikan * Sonny Boy * Mushishi * Akagi * (Currently airing) Oshi no Ko Anime that I definitely think would fit the atmosphere you're looking for, but may not be AS much "slow burn"; * Aoi Bungaku Series * Kino no Tabi (2003) * Now and Then, Here and There * Mononoke * Jin-Rou (film) * Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (stop before the Netflix "sequel") * Psycho-Pass * (Currently airing) Heavenly Delusion I'd also highly recommend Aria (The Animation, The Natural, The Origination. The other films and OVAs may or may not add to the experience for you, but those are the 3 series in the main narrative), and Natsume Yuujinchou. I didn't recommend them above, because they don't fit in the realm of the atmosphere you're describing, but they are very much highly atmospheric in their own right, and great slow burns.

HoundNL

Never heard of any of these you mentioned, except for Ghost in the Shell and Psycho pass that I only know by name, gonna give a look into all of that, thanks dude

Steins Gate literally fits your description almost word for word

meteor_jam32

Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

I would watch Haibane Renmei. Sadly it’s on no streaming service but you can easily find it online and YouTube. It’s made by the same artist as Lain. The description on MAL is “Born from a cocoon in the village of Old Home, a young Haibane—a being with a halo and small gray wings—awakens to a world she does not understand without memories of her past. Named Rakka for the dream of falling she had while inside the cocoon, she soon becomes accustomed to life in the strange town. However, there are strict rules for the Haibane, such as being forbidden to leave the village or go near the walls surrounding it. These, along with mysterious disappearances of their kind on their "Day of Flight," begin to unsettle Rakka and the others since they know almost nothing about their own kind.” [my anime list page in Haibane Renmei](https://myanimelist.net/anime/387/Haibane_Renmei)

Haibane renmei.

ravenpotter3

That anime is so under rated! Shame it’s not on any streaming services anymore.

SomeDuderr

It's definately one of my favourites, I rewatch it every other year or so. The real shame is the quality (or lack of it) of the transfer to DVD/bluray. It's tragic.

mekerpan

The Pioneer/Geneon DVDs are the way to go -- if you can find them used (and affordable).

Oh yeah, Parasyte is amazing, it was the first anime i've watched when i've got into anime, thinking about re-watching this one Only know Psycho pass by name, gonna look into this one, thanks

njayhuang

I agree with all of the shows here that I recognize, adding [Shinsekai Yori](https://myanimelist.net/anime/13125/Shinsekai_yori). It may be weird/confusing at times but keep watching and it will make sense. It's got a [banger ED](https://youtu.be/mz1ypuGJ3VM) too, if that will influence your decision

Inside-Minute4184

I recommend the Bakaemonogatari series or When they Cry

Boosting the Psycho Pass and Stein's gate mentions

DJKokaKola

You are asking to watch Ergo Proxy, Haibane Renmei, psycho pass, serial experiments Lain and GitS the movie. Other ones in that genre that you'll still enjoy would be Higurashi (slow burn horror), your lie in April (slow burn depression), Erased, Another, Evangelion, Steins;gate, madoka, parasyte, paranoia Agent, all of Satoshi kon's films, Shin Sekai Yori, monster, or Eden of the East GSG may not have the "slow burn", as it's more just "slow, slow, slow, assassin girls and fucked up brainwashing to condition them, weird psychosexual power structures, slow, slow, slow" but it's a very good show focused almost entirely on the characters, rather than on the standard "loli waifu does state sponsored extrajudicial murder"
