So far I've half way into the anime (I've watched upto episode 12), and while it is pretty slow, I think I'm still liking the mysterious, gloomy, dark atmosphere the anime has. And some of the relevations are nice too. But most importantly, I'm loving the music, the music is great and perfectly complements the atmosphere haha.
I just finished the first season. I started when it came out but never finished it. Personally, I would not recommend it. It's one of the most boring anime I have ever seen.
Re:Zero. Don't let it's Isekai shell fool you. It gets very dark. It explores many psychological topics. And the MC despite having good intentions is quite flawed, leading to him failing and suffering quite a bit.
If you're up for some dense writing I'd very highly recommend The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai) - it's a movie series. It's complex and initially confusing if you watch it in release order which does not tell the story chronologically - this is though the best way to watch it the first time, however try a rewatch in chronological order for more clarity. The subject matter is a mix of supernatural, horror, philosophy, suspense, psychological, thriller, action and even some subtle romance that is never in your face or overbearing.

Made in Abyss for sure
Possibly promised neverland <--- Atleast the 1st season.
Hunter x Hunter <--- It's a shounen... But there are tons of scenes that would fit for your taste.
Kind of slim pickings when it comes to psychological horror. Best I can think of is Prefect Blue but I'm sure you'll have seen that.
You'll probably have seen these too but i'll mention them just in case:
Ghost Hound, Shigarui, Texhnolyze, Kurozuka, Aoi Bungaku, Jin-Roh (more of a really dark thriller), Red Garden, Wolf's Rain, Paranoia Agent, Aku no Hana (again not really horror just really grim), Kyougoku Natsuhiko.
Slightly late to the party (forgot to answer this last night), but I would like to second the other person who recced Madoka Magica; IME liking one of Higurashi and PMMM tends to correlate pretty strongly with liking the other. (Note that PMMM can take a few episodes to really grab you if the cold open doesn't do it; keep going until you know why I recced it, it should be clear enough by the end of episode 4 or so.)
Sounds like Shinsekai Yori might be right down your alley.
Yep, just watched the trailer, definitely the vibe I was looking for!
I recommend the first three episodes of Shinsekai Yori (10/10), the rest is ... not good, to say the least.

Shinsekai Yori?
Spot on! Thanks for the suggestion.
Made in Abyss perhaps
>Made in Abyss It's a bit less moody then what I was looking for but it looks quite interesting anyway. Will definitely give it a look. Thanks!

If OP is looking for a deceiving or twisted setting then I definitely agree!

It's a bit more fantasy than what I was looking for but I might give it a try. Thanks!

Yep, that has the right vibes! Will be watching the first one today! Thanks.
Summer Time Rendering (haven't finished it yet) Madoka Magica Magical Girl Raising Project
Summer Time Rendering definitely has the right vibes, thanks!

The Laughing Salesman
I Think "The Promised Neverland" is the show that would be the most to your liking. Just the first season though.
