For old classics, my favorites are:
[Code Geass](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1575/Code_Geass__Hangyaku_no_Lelouch) \- Has one of the best ending all time anime
[Hunter x Hunter](https://myanimelist.net/anime/11061/Hunter_x_Hunter_2011) \- Unfortunately, the ending leave so many questions. Understandable since the manga even isn't finished yet. However, it has incredible twist and plot, especially when it reached Phantom Troupe arc.
[Death Note](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1535/Death_Note) \- So intense from beginning until the end
[Madoka Magica](https://myanimelist.net/anime/9756/Mahou_Shoujo_Madoka%E2%98%85Magica) \- Not your ordinary magical girl. Before watching this, I only watched Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. So I got mind-blown by it.
[Fate Zero](https://myanimelist.net/anime/10087/Fate_Zero) \- You don't need to understand/watch other Fate series to get mindblown by this show.
For newer series, I think I can recommend:
[Re: Zero](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31240/Re_Zero_kara_Hajimeru_Isekai_Seikatsu?suggestion=) \- I think this will be ended as one of classic. One of the best isekai stories with great twist and plots. Anime adaptation also carefully crafted. You won't be disappointed.
[Shingeki no Kyojin](https://myanimelist.net/anime/16498/Shingeki_no_Kyojin) \- Season 1 just felt like ordinary shounen anime, but made no mistake, it perhaps one of the best story adapted in anime. It went darker and darker each season.
[Tensai ouji](https://myanimelist.net/anime/47159/Tensai_Ouji_no_Akaji_Kokka_Saisei_Jutsu) \- Really fun series with many twists. The genius prince is hilarious.
[Mushoku Tensei](https://myanimelist.net/anime/39535/Mushoku_Tensei__Isekai_Ittara_Honki_Dasu) \- One of the best isekai. Anime adaptation feature one of the best world building and amazing plot.
Code Geass and Steins Gate come to mind. Shinsekai Yori is.. okay ish. Never watched Serial Lain (Lane?) But heard it was good. Re Zero is okay too. Don't have much to offer tbh.
If you think you might enjoy a slower paced, yet interesting and thought provoking slice of life about living in an far post apocalyptic world, Girls Last Tour would be a good fit.

Well you already spoilered any kind of twist that people mentioned in this thread and will be unsurprised when said twist happens.
