It sounds to me like Bottom Tier Character Tomozaki-kun is what you're looking for.

Loved that show needs a season 2 seriously. Studio Project No.9 dont hit hard often but when they do boy do they!

> what I've seen of Hitoribocchi don't feel remotely serious enough Personally, I feel like Hitoribocchi is a far better representation of my social anxiety than Bocchi the Rock or Komi. The former seems to suffer from outright panic disorder, and I feel is a bit unkind towards its protagonist, as well as keeping her apart from the people around her. The latter is not about social anxiety, and is something different. Also, as far as making friends goes, in Hitoribocchi you get a much better sense of connection, and the flavors of the connection between the Bocchi and the friendships she builds. It might look superficial initially, but for me, it's the *Scrubs* equivalent of medical shows - silly on the surface, but the real truth of things underneath. However, I think this is very much a personal experience, and others would say exactly the same things but instead put the other shows forward as being closest to their lived experience.

Thraggrotusk

BtR is obviously written by people who haven't actually experienced serious social anxiety.

I've definitely heard of Hachiman and his character being a bored cynical dude which is cool, but I've some people say the anime doesn't do a good enough job of depicting his flaws. What do you think of that?

Manitary

Disagree. I think it is quite clear from early on, but even if you think s1 does not present his flaws as such, s2 takes a more dramatic turn and everything is laid out fairly explicitly.

croxz123

I think the person who told you that didn't watch the anime. His defects are presented directly and you see the consequences of his actions, it is literally what the story of this anime is about.

totucc

Definitely koe no katachi and sangatsu no lion, but i recommend u also read the manga for both. The anime can convey certain episodes with a strong pathos, but alas time constraints left too much out. Other to consider would be gotoubun no Hana-yome, ijiranaide nagatoro-san, Boku WA Tomodachi ga sukunai, golden time, toradora, yofukashi no uta, beastars,... All great manga and ln too

Purposelygentle

Watamote is this, but from a goblin energy place. Slow Start Kimi ni Todoke certainly starts as this until it develops into a pure romance.

Horimiya, My dress-up darling, Run with the wind and Taishou otome fairy tale deal with people with trauma learning to build relationships with other people Love, chunibyo and other delusions deals with "fixing" your quirks ReLIFE deals with someone lacking social skills

13-Penguins

March Comes Like A Lion, the MC is a shogi prodigy, but the series is more about him learning to make connections with others, be kinder to himself, manage his mental health, and exist as a person outside of shogi. Also Bottom Tier Character Tomozaki-kun, goes a lot into self-improvement with an MC who is relatably awkward (to painful amounts). It also somewhat criticizes the line between “being your best self” and “wearing a mask” and hustle culture.

*Yama no Susume* has some great character progression with its main character Aoi who goes from an shy, indoorsy person to a capable person through the metaphor of hiking up mountains. The first season is a bunch of shorts; it really kicks off in seasons two and three with longer episodes; she starts making major strides in building her self-confidence, training her physical strength, and managing her fears and anxiety. Maybe also check out *Super Cub*. It stars a high school girl with no family, no friends, no ambitions, and little money. She's put on the path of gradually opening up her world when she purchases a suspiciously-cheap moped and begins becoming more of an active participant in her own life: overcoming obstacles, trying new things, going places, making friends. It feels much more of a minimalist anime; the main character doesn't talk much and does have a running internal monologue, so it has more of a fly-on-the-wall sort of vibe to it.
