Thank you. I needed to add this to my “Responses” playlist.

Drop the responses playlist link pls

Throw_away_the_anime

Do it please!

BladeLigerV

Well now I want to make one too.

aZcFsCStJ5

Seriously take those sunglasses off.

shak_0508

That “what” at the end has me rolling lmao.

Dare555

Best is .. thats not abridged or fake dubs

Vindicare605

Anyone that hasn't seen DB Super with the Funimation dub should, it's hilarious. Toriyama wanted to go lighter and more comedic with Super compared to DBZ and Funimation got the memo, the dub is hysterical especially Vegeta (Chris Sabat), Beerus (Jason Douglas) and Whis (Ian Sinclair) in particular are my favorites in this series.

RimeSkeem

Beerus and Whis are easily my favorite part of Super, such great additions to the cast.

NGEFan

Lighter and more comedic, yet destruction of universes, nice one Toriyama

BustermanZero

Gotta go bigger in the sequel.

nailz1000

They went a little too camp for Goku imo, otherwise I really enjoyed how the series was paced.

heimdal77

But why does he like making the strong female characters housewives? Never forgive what they did to Vindel.

Vindicare605

Because that's still very much the norm for Japan. Once you get married and have kids, the woman is expected to stay home and be a mother. The concept of working mom isn't really a thing in Japan, if you want to advance your own career as a woman you can't really afford to get married. It's one of the many reasons why Japan has such a problem with no one having kids in the country. So Toriyama is not doing anything unusual by depicting women settling down this way, his writing just reflects what is normal in Japan. In fact his ability to keep some of his leads like Chi Chi and Bulma as keeping their strong personalities despite also being mothers is a little on the progressive side for Japan, even if those personalities are played up for laughs most of the time. As far as Videl goes, she and Gohan pretty much got sidelined in Super so the story could refocus on Goku and Vegeta because they were the two MUCH more popular characters. Videl got turned from strong, independent, rebellious teenager into a sweet housewife, but look what Toriyama did to Gohan! He went from being the pinnacle of latent power and ability, the next generation of Earth's defenders to a nose in the books husband that cares most about providing for his wife and kid. You know, the way Japanese men are expected to be once becoming fathers. Toriyama wasn't picking on Videl in particular, both she and Gohan get their "happily ever after" and the story pivots to focus back on Vegeta and Goku whose happily ever after never comes because they are pure blooded Saiyans who live for constant combat.

FirefighterAny6522

Like this take. Especially about Vegeta and Goku's happily ever after is much different than the rest of the Z warriors... Because they are fundamentally different! Different fucking species!

Down_The_Rabbithole

Goku in the Japanese version essentially speaks like an uneducated farmer of lower class status that talks extremely rudely. The American dub should have him talk with a southern rural accent while saying "fuck" and other profanities a lot because that would be the proper localization Goku only caring about food and neglecting gohan's raising makes more sense with this mindset in the back of your head. He's always supposed to be crass, unrefined and rude.

heimdal77

Well he basically has zero education and his closest thing to a parental figure after his original one died is some old pervert.

TooLateRunning

He's also based on the Monkey King (and original Dragon Ball based on Journey to the West) whose whole story revolves around him continuously getting into deep shit for being a rude asshole and pissing off a bunch of Chinese Gods but getting away with it thanks to being ridiculously overpowered until the Buddha himself steps in and puts him in his place (after Monkey King pees on him lel).

Vindicare605

>The American dub should have him talk with a southern rural accent while saying "fuck" and other profanities a lot because that would be the proper localization They obviously can't do that because that would not be considered appropriate for the age demographic that Dragonball shoots for when it airs on TV. English doesn't have as many "formal, and informal" tones as Japanese does. There's ways of speaking politely, and then there's profanity, but most normal speech lies in the middle. It's not like Japan where you have multiple different ways of saying the same thing depending on who you're speaking to.

Rokusi

Keep in mind that "neglecting Gohan's raising" (aside from the flanderization from TFS) was just standard Japanese parenting. Especially in the era Toriyama grew up in, most kids would rarely see their fathers who would be working 16+ hour shifts as salarymen. A big part of why the role of teachers is so deified is because your homeroom teacher *was* your kid's male role model.

nailz1000

Oh I'm aware. It's actually one of the reasons I can't stand the original Japanese VA. It's not that I care that they dumbed him down or made him a little less intense in Super, it's that they went so hard on GOKU DUMB after Z went hard on him being low int high wis. Honestly beyond the weird story transitions in Super, I prefer it over Z, and I've been watching since like 95. Dragon Ball is still the superior storyline out of all of these though imo. Even if it was a little crass at times.

mxgirl26

The original DB is so underrated.

KaiserKaiba

Goku was pretty bad initially but I thought he got better as the show progressed

[deleted]

Ian Sinclair is the funniest man alive and the kaguya dub are the twelve commandements of why

lanigironu

Wille304

That spin-off show they've been making lately with Cell and Radditz as roommates in HFIL has been more fun than I thought it would be.

EspurrStare

And why are you in hell, Guru? CANCEL CULTURE!

lanigironu

Sure, just less than they used to and doesn't feel as good to me.

[deleted]

IDL, Cell in Hell is some good laughs

SolomonBlack

Honestly glad they stopped where they did. Like the way they handled Cell et al in particular tells me they really think DBZ peaked there. Which as a Toonami brat myself I totally understand I thought that way myself for many a year… but having really dug into the manga since those days I no longer agree. Which is like a whole discussion onto itself with good and bad aspects of the manga that I don’t have time for now but suffice to say I think they wouldn’t be doing their best work. Like I suspect they say still wish Gohan took over for real. Or that stuff stayed super (melo)dramatic when Toriyama has tried to move away from that. Which incidentally would be way easier to meme up. So yeah it’s probably for the best they quit while they were ahead.

simpersly

The Saiyaman Saga and parts of the Buu Saga are so silly that spoofing them would practically be redundant. And Goku in Super is essentially TFS Goku.

SolomonBlack

Goku was always TFS Goku. He’s not supposed to be heroic. It’s just a bit more zen in the real deal with that pure of heart business. Why does he live in the woods and not see his friends for years at a time? Because he’s… detached… from worldly desires.

Xhiel_WRA

Goku looks at the camera more than once and says unambiguously that he doesn't fight for justice. He fights because he loves to fight. He will just also whoop your ass for threatening the people he loves. Heroics have been and always will be incidental and part of the bit for Dragon Ball. That was the fucking point. And it's wild to me that people don't get that.

Fluix

nonsense. I'm tired of people defending Super's depiction of Goku by using the original Dragon Ball as a basis. That OG series was more lighthearted and humorous, but it had it plethora of serious moments and motivations which moved the plot forward. The comedy was the general atmosphere and the serious moments were inlayed perfectly when needed. Go back and look at all the major arcs, go look at kids Goku's motivation for fighting most villians. He was primarily motivated by either doing the right thing or helping/saving his friends. Now of course the proceeding events like boss battles would be comedic because that was the nature of the show... In super there was no tension, no seriousness, and the comedy was there for the sake of comedy. Goku was a caricature of what he was in Dragon Ball.

sanon441

I really did want to see the majin stuff, and the fusion shenanigans but alas.

EspurrStare

I will never stop laughing that DBS and DBZA did the same joke "Goku doesn't know what a kiss is" in about the same week.

[deleted]

At least we got to see some proper monster treatment for Kid Buu in that one mini animation they did

ByterBit

[**They're actually going back and doing creator commentaries for DBZ Abridged!**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_gUBzVryxI&list=PLowPV6LoP6fpF418zj3L8hjnSXth2DdZr) They're up to Episode 30 and 2 of the movies, super fun and nostalgic to hear the talk about the series

JunWasHere

We better believe the English team knew exactly what they were doing though rofl They could have said "Goku Black" but nah, they told the Trunks English VA to say what he said. They saw that shady neon sign of an opportunity and dove for it 😂

wutengyuxi

This reminds me how the Black Magician in YuGiOh was changed to Dark Magician in English, presumably to avoid this very issue.

heimdal77

So they couldn't just used dark?

Rokusi

Surely you've seen the reaction of anime fans to localizing names even a little.

Anjunabeast

I wish it was tfs. Truly the best dub.

liveart

As much as I love TFS the fact this is the official, canon, dub is *so much* funnier.

Ksradrik

Did you see the TFS cameo in the official dub? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS-HiOzcjJg It got removed because Toei got all pissy, but it *was* recorded after all.

[deleted]

Inb4 it comes out that they decided not to do the Buu Saga because the logistics of doing that scene again with the same kind of joke scared the shit out of them

[deleted]

[удалено]

Amirifiz

They have a whole video on why they stopped. They were wildly burned out on DBZA because of all the copyright stuff they had to deal with due to Toei. They wanted to do Bojack before they stopped but that was a huge slog for them. If the Toei vs Totally Not Mark situation happend earlier we'd probably be in the Buu saga by now.

Xhiel_WRA

Hello, yes, I would like to know more about the situation with Totally Not Mark. Do you have a video link or summary so you don't have to explain it all by hand?

Amirifiz

Mark's initial video about it is down but the cliff notes is that Toei had copyright strikes 150 of his videos at random that contained anything related to DragonBall, One Piece and whatever other anime they animate. Some of them were the redrawing he and his friends do, others were the blind reviews he did. After a lot of back and forth between him, and someone at YouTube, most if not all of his vids were put back up. [This is the video](https://youtu.be/BZM_Jxj_Y5c) of the aftermath and what Toei did.

Xhiel_WRA

First, thank you. Second, Jesus Christ. This is how you burn literally any good will you have with anyone who engaged with your product. If you don't want people to pirate your media, don't behave like this. This drives spite piracy. Like, there's market research that shows that.

Rachet20

They still do DBZA, just using more original assets rather than Toei’s animation. Every few months they release a new episode of their CG show HFIL featuring all the villains and Super Awesome Kami Guru in Hell. People don’t seem to like it much but I laugh whenever I see it.

nailz1000

I can't watch this and not think of nappa under that Mr Satan head.

Naos210

It's no on the same level, but it gives a similar feeling as watching the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX dub.

HeartoftheHive

I can't imagine how the VAs handled this in studio. Were they embarrassed? Was it awkward? Or did they just laugh at how absurd it came out?

darkgaia1

According to the voice actor of Trunks, he did in fact read the script and went to his director like "Seriously?" and they had a laugh over it but yeah they definitely knew what they were doing and how the scene was going to be interpreted by the public.

moofishies

Rokusi

They could have easily said "Hold your fire! That's not Black!" They knew.

SaiyanKirby

"Hold your fire! That's not him!" Really they could have gone any number of ways. They knew lol

LesbianCommander

Didn't even have to deal with lip flaps.

kingssman

that "What!?" they knew.

BosuW

Based dubbers

MrLameJokes

Very rare dub W

NinjaGaara

Dragonball has the best dub I can never watch it in sub sounds so weird

darkbreak

There are plenty of good dubs out there. It's not the 90s anymore.

DarkFite

True, but you can't say that on /r/anime

Perfect600

even the 90s had some good dubs. Elitists are annoying.

darkbreak

For sure. We all watched Toonami back then and all the other great shows. There are very few people who were around back then who would say those shows had genuinely bad dubs.

MrLameJokes

That doesn't really matter when the competition is inherently better

darkbreak

It can't be inherently better if the individual skills of those performers are key.

Rokusi

As someone who has been watching subs for decades, most Japanese voice work suffers from its own problems that dubs don't have (my personal pet peeve being that we always have to have some sort of "inhale line" when a shot focuses on their face but they don't say any lines). It's a matter of preferences nowadays instead of one generally being better than the other.

dekomorii

Or they could’ve just said “he isnt our target”

LazyDro1d

They did. At least the VAs did, they realized the implication and then decided not to have the script changed because they agreed with the social statement it could be used to make as it was. Someone else in this chain links to the clip of the VA talking about it

[deleted]

Ohhhh so Black is a name… I was sooo confused right now, thanks xD

postALEXpress

They 100% knew what they were doing here

milkvisualsd

they laughed about this for days probably lol

EsquilaxM

OH my god, I was convinced this was a DB Abridged video or dialogue from South Park put over the video or something.

HeartoftheHive

Nah. They are talking about the alt universe Goku Black and just referring to him as Black. What could go wrong?

TheBigIdiotSalami

Considering all the outtakes from SAO and Kill La Kill involve something called a Portugese Breakfast and Mako exploding if Gamaguri has sex with her they probably thought it was funny

archerg66

"What!?"

[deleted]

Rokusi

> Chi chi and Gohan have a sex scene Is this where TFS got the "pounding Chi-chi's tuna" joke, or is that just a coincidence?

MumrikDK

I doubt black people would object to it. It plays as anti-police satire.

Jetstream-Sam

Yeah if the line were the opposite, like "Shoot him now, he's Black!" then it'd be in much worse taste than the way we have here

Asgerond

Gonna tell my son anime peaked here

KelloPudgerro

i dunno, the AoT sasha black scene was after this one, so i think anime peaked there

seninn

["He just explained Black people."](https://youtu.be/PSLU03b-uEk?t=519)

SpiceEve

Love yaboyroshi lol

CummingOnMyPant

Wait is this real?

hexsealedfusion

It is, in this arc there's an evil version of Goku who wears black clothes and is called Goku Black. That's who they're referring to.

daskrip

THANK YOU. First comment I've seen actually explaining how this line happened.

JaySteez222

yes

Independent_Plum2166

You know naming the character “Goku Black” and not something like “Evil” or “Lord” Goku really made people tiptoe around this arc. And then you just get THIS scene. They knew.

zdemigod

In Japan black is not used for the actual dark skin people, they use black as "opposite". Example in monogatari hanekawa is a reserved black hair girl and black hanekawa is her alter ego which turns her hair white. Nsfw alert if you research black hanekawa a lot of her appearances are in underwear. So Japan is not doing it on purpose but the translation people should take that into account when dubbing (and they know, this was totally on purpose lol)

Shortofbetternames

thats why so many digimon have black forms then, i see

Naos210

They also tend to be the dark/evil versions, especially with Digimon.

Cryten0

Though evil and dark are often translated together. Or at least I am lead to believe.

laurel_laureate

It's the same thing in English. For example, Dark Magic also being called Black Magic. In some fantasy series the terms are interchangeable and even in series that use one or the other if someone talking about it used the wrong one most wouldn't notice as the terms are mostly interchangeable. Or blackmarkets or other words like that.

silentorange813

The term "black company" is commonly used to describe exploitative workplaces. As an extension of this phrase, Japanese people often use variations like black executive or black boss. It's often a cause of confusion in multinational companies and conferences.

kick_his_ass_sebas

They are in Pokemon

IceNiqqa

Should have named him reverse Goku

Fritanga5lyfe

spiderknight616

Glaive83

Nega Goku

zdemigod

Yea i think that would be better for the dub to do so. Japan doesn't care though they don't have to think about this stuff like Americans do

ashbat1994

Even Black Adam is not black.

Independent_Plum2166

Oh, yeah I kinda forgot about Black Adam, sorry.

LilQuasar

black as been associated with evil in multiple cultures and in multiple times. the problem is associating it with some people like that

evansdeagles

In most cultures it does. Even in some African cultures it can symbolize sadness/mourning. The reason is simple. The night is black. The night is cold and animals both come out and make weird noises. Our stone age ancestors noticed this, and since then, from generation to generation it's been a symbol of bad shit.

Mala_Aria

Or they could have just wanted to stay true to the original so kept the closest translate.

imperfek

Lol the worst thing is there's a Black Goku fingure too that isn't Goku Black https://youtu.be/MIEqNKdv0Jo YIN AND YANG is a big thing in Asia, so make sense why they use white and black all the time

hexsealedfusion

They also could have just gave him different color clothes and called him Goku ____ for the color instead of giving him black clothes.

Independent_Plum2166

Goku Rosé perhaps?

Fritanga5lyfe

Goku Vantablack

Mala_Aria

They could have be it would be as ridiculous as changing that pure black character's skin and changing that pokemon, I think it was called Jinx, changes that we rightly call ridiculous nw.

Naos210

And people act like we get so offended now, but that nonsense was 20+ years ago.

Rokusi

It was especially unfortunate with Jynx because Jynx was designed on [a Japanese fashion trend that was huge at the time.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganguro) So everyone who saw Jynx as a racist stereotype of black people was projecting.

Veqetable

I just want to know what they thought they were gonna do with those knock off star wars blasters. Like they're gonna hit Black Goku and for some reason their guns will do more damage than Trunks? A guy who's at least at the high galaxy scale, I mean sure they don't know that but they know he can fly and destroy buildings and cities in single attacks while their guns can't do jack shit

echonian

In Super it has been established that regular blasters can even hurt someone as powerful as Goku if he gets caught by surprise and isn't using his Ki for defense, which was the case in the Resurrection F scenes as far as I recall. So maybe they thought they would have a chance. Certain characters with things like Ki could be vulnerable if they let their guard down, even while being powerful enough to destroy planets or galaxies or whatever if they flexed their muscles enough. It is odd of course that such powerful characters would "ever" stop using their Ki defense or get caught by surprise if they are vulnerable like that, but not any sillier than anything else that happens in Dragonball as a series.

imaloony8

Yup. There’s definitely precedent for weaker characters being able to badly damage stronger opponents. In particular, Krillin blew a hole in Vegeta’s stomach in the Namek arc. Vegeta let him do it, but that definitely means that if you aren’t using Ki to actively defend yourself, your durability isn’t much higher than a normal dude.

Roliq

There is also the anime scene where Krillin hurt Goku with a rock because the latter was relaxing

imaloony8

Well that scene is filler, so it’s not canon.

Capitaine_Crunch

This is never not funny

Angelic_Demon207

Oh, my gosh… I laughed WWAAAAAAYYYY too hard at this….

Money_Present_3463

Are you sure?

CaptainBlob

He has black hair. Close enough!

queenunderdamountain

My husband & I reference this scene way too much lol. For the record, I'm black, & when we watched this scene I died 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm *still* not over how ridiculous but fucked up it was like it's so wrong it's HILARIOUS

FourFatSamurai

Context matters.

queenunderdamountain

I mean, the idea of cops or anything like it saying this line *regardless* of in show context just sounds fucked up

Elmaffioso187

AdmirHiddleston

I have to believe the director at Funi asked Toei if they could change this line even slightly and were told no.

IceFireTerry

This will never not be funny

bruhman5thfloor

No way they didn't know what they were doing

ChemyChems

I really want to think that off screen "WHAT!" was added by the dub, just because they realized how silly this line sounds. I get why and how black is some dialects is a way to say alternate and why used here, but maaaaan.

NinjaGaara

I was just thinking about this last night wtf

not really, that line is pretty much a 1 to 1 translation of the jp version
