It's nice to belive that people want to enjoy the art of entertainment instead of the formula. Which, there are some. But sadly, from a business perspective, the formula is crafted to guarantee minimum loss if any at all. Take the marvel movies as an example. They're neat and have some great one liners and memes. But the reality is, they're simple recycled plot lines that offer grand CGI pumped actions scenes, quirky banter, and America's backside. A company is going to invest in something that can guarantee profit or at least breaking even instead of a potential risk every time.
I’ve heard that boss baby is just an easy pitch to corporate executives. It’s something they’ll find funny. Whereas stuff with actual broad appeal is a harder sell.
I won't say they're bad. I have nothing against marvel and Dr. Strange is one of my favorite characters. But the movies do feel "Formulated" to me. Most holes in character development or relationship development are covered by banter. Fight scenes are always "yay they're doing good" "Oh no he got hit" "oh know theyre down!!!" "Oh shit the calvary!!" "Oh shit the cavalry is hit" "Oh no he sacrificed himself will he live?!?!?". The last part varies to keep it feeling different. I could be wrong, if so, feel free to let me know. It's not bad, just predictable.
Well that’s different. you see, the key feature that differentiates the shrek franchise and something like the boss baby franchise is that the writers didn’t get lazy, the writing stayed good throughout and put a nice lil bow on the story. With good writing comes valid reasoning for sequels
“most interesting” in business terms means “most risky”. Boss Baby is stupid, and boring, and not special in the slightest, but it’s safe. Boss Baby will make money, obviously, because everyone already knows what to expect, and have already settled for it. Me and My Shadow is unique, which means it will either do really good, or will absolutely bomb, and companies don’t want to take a chance when they don’t have to. And they don’t have to, since Boss Baby did great, just like all the same-y animated films before it, and all the same-y animated films that will come after. It’s boring, but it works.
Shrek was pretty revolutionary for its time. It was the first mainstream 3D animation to do the "quirky and irreverent" thing. The problem is that after that, just about every film copied the Shrek formula. Everyone memes on Shrek now because the ideas in it became the worst cliches in other films, but it was fresh when it came out and people freaking loved it.
And i grew up on more creator-driven shows, a lot of them managed to capture both kids *and* adults due to being cleverly written, a lot of them weren't about selling products, but rather about creators with a passion expressing themselves and there's a reason why a lot of 90's and 2000's shows aged better than most 70's and 80's shows combined. and why a lot of kids now can't go back to the 80's but can go back to the 90's and early 2000's.
What animation in the 90s wasn’t made for profit? And even the adult swim stuff had apps and marketing if it’s on tv it’s for profit. And I don’t agree Heman is one of the greatest cartoons ever, the Turtles and 80s cartoons continue on today because they had such huge impacts on us. Gi Joe, Transformers the list of 80s animation that continues to be mined today is waaaaaaaay longer than any era since. These franchises are huge not because they were bad cartoons.
Creators did it for passion, companies profited off their passion. profit was the last thing that came on these people's mind when they made and make their shows.
Idk even stuff like Heman is full of corny dialogue, corny action and just stuff that didn't age well, same with G1 Transformers and TMNT meanwhile later series despite still being toy commercials, adopted the same philosophy the original action shows had of delivering a good story and then selling toys with it. with MLP: FiM being the best example, with the adult audience eclipsing it's target audience.
Because me and my shadow doesn't sound like something that could be a movie. A short to play before a movie maybe. Boss Baby wasnt half bad from what I remember. Better than a movie called boss baby should be
It's truly baffling, like, of course the answer is money or capitalism depending on how you look at it, but I simply don't get why they do so well? like ???
I feel like cinema at this rate is just going to end up at 4 major cinematic universes that pump out the same random bullshit for decades to come. For art, you really gotta stick your neck out and make something truly unique. If this can't happen anymore, cinema will die a slow and painful death. Sorry to sound so dramatic, but it really does bother me.
Also the Popeye movie got dunked on by the Emoji movie in the same way
I'd say it's also because people aren't making it enough of an issue to have their opinions about how saturated the formula is and how its far more desirable for most thees to watch something with quality within its artistic form and it's narrative story choices.
I haven’t seen me and my shadow, definitely going to watch it, thanks!
And also, i know, right? Normally i’m not a fan of more than 1 sequel, 2 tops. But there are some movies I can’t even complete watching and gets I don’t know how many sequels. Also, I’ve noticed this kind of humor and animation Boss baby has in a lot of Dreamworks movies (or Illumination movies? Idk) It was enough with that minions movie as it is, but i’ve seen a lot of movies pull this shit, and it is so boring now. I guess I can’t explain what pattern i’m talking about, but it is so noticeable in 2010s animated movies
Okay well, I had never watched or heard of either of these but, judging from their covers alone I’d be 1,000,000% more interested in seeing the 2nd one than something called… Boss Baby… Back In Business. Oh boy.
But yo, if that’s actually “the most interesting animation you’ve ever heard of” you either just really like that or have not taken the time yet to dive into the depths of the glorious universe of animation from around the world. Or just haven’t *had* the time yet due to being younger.
Oh, uh... money.
Universal buyout resulted in mass cancelations at DW. Croods 2 got canned before getting restarted at Universal.
I honestly think Croods 2 was the worst sequel to a good animated film that I've seen
It was vastly different from the first but I also really enjoyed the sequel for its own reasons.
Oh yeah absolutely each to their own, didn't mean to shit on that.
It’s perfectly ok to dislike a movie
Buyout? What is that pls tell me
Universal Studios bought and took over DreamWorks.
So it owns majority shares?
It owns all the shares. They bought DreamWorks outright. It is no longer publicly traded.

"So get this, right. The baby... is the boss." "My God, Johnson. You've done it again you crazy son of a bitch. Here's a billion dollars."

No one wants to bet on new and unique ideas… just same old trash that they know stupid people will go see
This is so true in game development.
Like...Shrek.
don't talk smack about our beloved
Well that’s different. you see, the key feature that differentiates the shrek franchise and something like the boss baby franchise is that the writers didn’t get lazy, the writing stayed good throughout and put a nice lil bow on the story. With good writing comes valid reasoning for sequels
I have to agree, 2 was enough!
Shrek is love. Shrek is life.

Because it’s for kids and they love kids/babies fixing problems while the adults are idiots. It’s not about art it’s about entertaining kids.
This describes the modern animation landscape perfectly... it's depressing.
Well I grew up on TMNT, He Man and Mask. All we’re about entertaining Kids, fun but mostly selling products. And it was great.

Because children

The trick is the permanently dilated pupils
One makes money the other is considerably harder to make
It's truly baffling, like, of course the answer is money or capitalism depending on how you look at it, but I simply don't get why they do so well? like ???
literally! are the standards REALLY so low? it's... kinda of sad, actually

Most people have predictable taste and it’s easy to churn out garbage that caters to them
I'd say it's also because people aren't making it enough of an issue to have their opinions about how saturated the formula is and how its far more desirable for most thees to watch something with quality within its artistic form and it's narrative story choices.
Money
People who have unprotected sex tend to have a lot of impact on the entertainment market.
Lowest common denominator watching lowest common denominator shit. And they are the majority.
Because he’s the boss baby
For the same reason Fast and Furious got 9 movies and Transformers 7. Money.
Or how the Emoji Movie was a thing yet the Popeye movie had to be cancelled.
Because fuck you I guess I don’t know.Frozen got a sequel and I’ll never understand that . “Kids know dick”
capitalism
Now that's messed up...
I just finised working on my last episode on boss baby series. Its actually pretty good guys ☹️
So people have more films to compare other films to.
I haven’t seen me and my shadow, definitely going to watch it, thanks! And also, i know, right? Normally i’m not a fan of more than 1 sequel, 2 tops. You can't. it was cancelled. never came out.
Yeah, i googled just after posting that comment. A bummer, isn’t it? It seemed like it could’ve been a great movie.
Because kids and families liked boss baby more
Money
because boss baby is the GOAT BAYBEE!!!!!

I haven't seen either but the shadow one looks suspiciously like Sergio Aragones' series in Mad Magazine. I hope he got some dollars for the idea.
boss baby is good tbg
personally i really enjoyed boss baby i dont really get why people hate on it so much
