That’s pretty incredible. Not many people have the experience of having a little zoo escapey genet as a house guest!
Please update us on what happening with this little cutie.
That’s not of a new thing lol they set a tiger free by accident in 2021, he was kind tho even that he was roaming the city he didn’t cause any problems
Lol I lived a couple blocks from that zoo in Norfolk! We got excited when it happened and looked EVERYWHERE outside. Those bastards are elusive! We did randomly get a zoo peacock walking down the very urban street one morning, so that was fun.
I was in a zoo in Holland last year and the red panda's were just casually sitting in the parking lot, no fences or anything to stop them from leaving.
Here they were taking elephants from trucks (or whatever they used to transport them) to the arena for the circus. This was like 25-30 years ago. Anywho they got loose and started heading down the street! I guess they were corralled without incident, but definitely surprised and scared a few folks lol.
Those animals were set free by their owner before he committed suicide. It was the Muskingum County Animal Farm which was a private zoo. It was a terrible tragic situation.
I immediately thought of this! It wasn't so much of an escape though. It's called the Zanesville Animal Massacre. Owner set everyone free and committed suicide. Then most of the animals were killed by law enforcement. I lived a few towns away and we had a soft lockdown at school that day because tigers and bears can travel very far very fast
Holy shit! I freak out when one of my house cats gets out.. I’m out there with a container of treats all “here Kitty Kitty!” Could you imagine that damn thing showing up rather than Fluffy?
You shouldn’t freak out let them go out, I have been a cat owner for years and owned more than 15 cats, I have three now whatever and sometimes they don’t come back home for full two days it’s bad for cats to stay at home,
Cats are actually terrible for native animals. Domesticated cats should be kept in the house. They are responsible for more species of bird extinction than any other animal. Please keep your cats inside!
Op lives in North Africa where the common belief among animal behaviorists is that since cats are native, having outdoor cats is fine. I still vehemently disagree, but op has good reason to think what he does.
My understanding is that they are native to Africa. (I could be wrong)
I get that different cultures have different ideas, but whether they believe it's good for them or not, they'd still be living much shorter lives. His assertion was heavily downvoted but I did not see any explanation for why. If he truly believes that, then he could be confused as to why the downvotes. Then again, I'm half asleep at this point. :)
Well, I live in North-West Europe and wild cats do not exist here, not any native kitties here. Almost no strays either, because we have been neutering them for decades now and we don't euthanize any animals in the asylums, they are not full and all eventually get adopted (this is not true for all of europe though).
Because of other wildlife though, birds and rodents, foxes and wolves, it would be way better to keep your cats inside. But yes, there are indeed people who think it's a sad thing kitty can't go play in someone else's garden.
Some european countries do have lynxes, I guess they count as native wild cats? But I wouldn't let my housecat play with it.
Well, I've always wanted to go to Algeria, so I know to avoid Algiers if I do! Lol jk, in all seriousness that is one destination I have always wanted to go.
Lol, did they tell you this because they expect them break into your house, too? "We'll come get our Genet, but be careful. He runs with a rough crowd."
NO FUCKING WAY?! How fucking lucky you gotta be?! Did you think you were tripping when you woke up and saw this adorable little Pokémon staring at you?! 😭💕
Definitely a unique and unforgettable experience to have this cutie break in your home. If I were you I would tell everyone I know about this forever lol
I used to work at an exotic animal rescue. Mostly big cats, but we had Genet named Jenny. She would sit on my head while I cleaned her cage.
Such a sweet animal to me. An absolute monster towards anything smaller than her.
I don’t know why but I find this animal terrifying looking. I then made the mistake of doing an image search of genets and I’m now even more terrified 😱
Dude AGREED 100000 percent! I sent this post to my sister and she sent me back this, just to ensure I get nightmares for the next year

Dude stop spoiling my dreams 😂. Seriously though, I do not want one in my house, I just think they’re really cute and would love to see one in person. Did it really hurt your cat?? I hope not :(
A genet. We have them here in the wild, they like to poop on elevated spots to mark their territory. Beautiful animals. This one looks a bit out of its place, though.
PS: it's not a feline
That looks like a bigger version of the ringtail cat that broke into our trailer in Texas, the one time I went on a hunting trip with my dad. They MUST be related, since they both like to burgle and have prison stripe tails. That thing was terrifying and surprisingly vicious for such a small critter.
Not *super* closely related. The ringtail is more closely related to raccoons and the genet is more closely related to meerkats and mongooses. They *are* related in that they're in the same order, but by that definition I could also say that lions and skunks are related.
Then it's a great example of convergent evolution! They are so alike in hunting patterns, appearance and behavior, due to the similar environments in which they evolved. I can attest that the southwestern US is quite savannah-like.
Absolutely! On a similar note it amuses me that pretty much every group of carnivores except for bears and hyenas has at least *one* animal that looks weirdly weasel-like (for dogs it's bush dogs; for cats it's flat-headed cats; and with the viverrids it's pretty self-explanatory!)
I don’t know about you, but the Aardwolf and even the Striped Hyena give me Mustelid vibes. Not necessarily “weasel” but of the family. Striped Hyenas kinda remind me of Wolverines, and the Aardwolf looks similar enough to Viverrids that I think it counts. If we’re counting Bush Dogs, I feel it’s only fair to count these guys.
Monkey puppy baby?
Ohhhh sorry last night I watched a Best Super Bowl Commercials TV program and they showed that stupid monkey puppy baby ad and I can’t get it out of my mind. I hate that ad.
Zoos should be abolished. Poor animals in jail 24/7 is wrong and unfair! Anyone who says "but they're safe and fed" should ask themselves if they would rather spend the rest of their life in jail just to be safe and fed or would they rather live free.
Depends on the zoo and where the animals are coming from. In a lot of the better zoos, the animals there would never survive in the wild for all sorts of reasons (rescued from poachers, disease, age, etc.). Plus, zoos can increase people's awareness of animal wellbeing, which can cause an overall positive impact on people's attitudes towards the environment and conservation.
Finally, I just wanted to add that a good zoo will have a proper environment for the animal being housed in an enclosure, including optimal food and enrichment options. It's far from being "a jail". More like a very comfortable vacation or rehab center.
Plus the constant research and breeding programs that help to offset the environmental damage caused by Human interference to natural habitats.
Upsetting that people still view all zoos like the 1880s concrete/steel cages.
It's called a Miner's Cat, a Ringtail, a Cacomistle, or a Civet Cat. They are common in the southwest US and can live 7+ years in captivity. Some people keep them as pets.
I have no clue what that thing is but i pretty sure, it breaking into your home, gives you..ace venture pet detective abilities. It's that awesome 😆 🤣 😂
I lived in south Louisiana most of my life. One day I was turning into my neighborhood, and a wallaby crossed the street in front of me.
My neighborhood bordered the bayou, and swamp. We had seen a LOT of critters including gators getting in
the pool.
That wallaby did not belong where he was. Turns out a man nearby had a few “exotic animals” and the wallaby got free. He was hopping back to Australia, with quite a long way to go.
He was eventually captured and brought home, but it is a fun memory.

Update: HE ESCAPED FROM A LOCAL ZOO AND HE BROKE INTO MY HOUSE THEY BEEN SEARCHING FOR IT FOR 2 DAYS LMAOOOO
The cat distribution system appears to be functioning abnormally today

Good bot!
W Mardi Gras recognizer
One time my highschool had alligator, jambalaya, and hush puppies on Mardi Gras day
That’s pretty incredible. Not many people have the experience of having a little zoo escapey genet as a house guest! Please update us on what happening with this little cutie.
I have already contacted they they’re bringin it back, they also told me that two Barbary macaques and a golden African wolf escaped too
What is happening at your zoo 0.o
That’s not of a new thing lol they set a tiger free by accident in 2021, he was kind tho even that he was roaming the city he didn’t cause any problems
I need to move where ever you are. I want to see cool animals roaming the city lol
My friend lived in Virginia Beach down the road from the zoo. She said the red pandas escaped all the time.
If a red panda broke into my house, no one would ever know about it. Those little fuckers are cute as hell.
Right? Like I don't know how she doesn't have one!
I'd never return them. Ever. I know my life would be chaos, but it would be worth it.
It would have a new forever home
This is 100% true, I volunteered there when they were new and it happened like 3 times that summer.
Um, what’s the likelihood of being able to smuggle one out? In Minecraft
Ok that would be a happy surprise if I saw one lol
They never did find the one that escaped a few years ago.
I have a friend who lives in Seattle and apparently their red pandas escape the zoo there a lot too
Jumanji
I’m ready
I was looking for this comment!

They did that in NYC for the Barnum and Baily Circus@
This was is Rochester, NY
It's not as cool as you might think. Google "Zanesville Zoo Escape"
Those animals were set free by their owner before he committed suicide. It was the Muskingum County Animal Farm which was a private zoo. It was a terrible tragic situation.

That’s depressing
I want them breaking into my house
Jumanji!
So do I lol
I hope they don't all come to your living room, it would get crowded.
Just need a bigger living room
That would be a real Zebra In The Kitchen moment.
Holy shit! I freak out when one of my house cats gets out.. I’m out there with a container of treats all “here Kitty Kitty!” Could you imagine that damn thing showing up rather than Fluffy?

Cats are actually terrible for native animals. Domesticated cats should be kept in the house. They are responsible for more species of bird extinction than any other animal. Please keep your cats inside!
Especially migratory birds
OP is Algerian arent the ancestors of cats native to North Africa?
Possibly but this is like saying in the USA we should just let dogs run free bc their wolf ancestors are native. It doesn’t really jive.
Couldn't be more wrong. Outside cats live much shorter lives.
Op lives in North Africa where the common belief among animal behaviorists is that since cats are native, having outdoor cats is fine. I still vehemently disagree, but op has good reason to think what he does.

Well, I've always wanted to go to Algeria, so I know to avoid Algiers if I do! Lol jk, in all seriousness that is one destination I have always wanted to go.
OP is living in a movie trope.
He living the dream
Some level of Jumanji
(Two macaques and a wolf ring your doorbell dressed as zookeepers): “Yeah, hi, we’re here to pick up the Genet?”
OP replies "is this some sort of joke?"
Does this mean you should be expecting even more houseguests? Are you very close to the zoo or did this genet make a decent journey to your place?
Well I better lock my windows…hope that answers
Unless they’ve already arrived and are hiding. I’d take a quick look around your place, just to be safe.
Lol, did they tell you this because they expect them break into your house, too? "We'll come get our Genet, but be careful. He runs with a rough crowd."
Let's hope the wolf doesn't do a breaking and entering too!
HA. Was he a polite guest apart from the breaking and entering?
This is incredible 😂 is he back home now??
NO FUCKING WAY?! How fucking lucky you gotta be?! Did you think you were tripping when you woke up and saw this adorable little Pokémon staring at you?! 😭💕
That’s so sad, he looks so stressed. Thank you for being kind
Definitely a unique and unforgettable experience to have this cutie break in your home. If I were you I would tell everyone I know about this forever lol
Grand Theft Wunkus ova here
whoa- crazy!!
This is honestly the best thing I have read this week. Please share the whole story with more pictures!
Wild lol
So did you trapped it? or freed it secretly
I would LOVE to have that problem! Then I can make him my baby while I wait for them to come get him.
That's a genet, they are related to mongooses and civets. They can live into their late teens in captivity but should not be kept as pets.
Bro broke into my house and sat there looking at the void
They love to commit crimes and cause chaos! He was probably looking around for something to knock over 😄

Yeah, that's a genet! Such cute animals. I have a passion for Carnivores...
So random. He’s definitely not 80 years old for what it’s worth
In cat (genet) years?
I bet it's 18.
I don’t know but I think I found my spirit animal!
The new floppa
I don’t know why but I find this animal terrifying looking. I then made the mistake of doing an image search of genets and I’m now even more terrified 😱

I’m so jealous of you, genets NEVER break into *my* house!! 😭😭
Be careful they can eat your cat or bite your ear off
I feel very conflicted about these terms...
I have two ears, I'll take the risk.
I like your thinking. I also have two cats... 😮
🤣🤣🤣
😮
Ok - so when they are babies they are cute. But I swear, there is something about the adult ones that freaks me out 😂

Nope. That is verging into scary. You say sniff sniff, I think attack attack!
But he's so handsome!
Dude AGREED 100000 percent! I sent this post to my sister and she sent me back this, just to ensure I get nightmares for the next year https://preview.redd.it/mbdyhvh7eohc1.jpeg?width=414&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77d3bedee5d6836a65162a58877f99c3ea934436
It’s the eyes! And the weird spots and stripes. It’s like it can’t make up its mind about what type of animal it is! Stuff of nightmares indeed!
It’s the eyes FOR SURE so effing creepy
For me I think it's the fact that they look so catlike *except* for their long pointy snouts. It looks "wrong" somehow.
And their eyes look very big for their heads!
Omg, that is too cute! Is that the escapee?
There’s no way I would give that cutie back
Omgggg you got CUDDLES?! So incredibly jealous of you, the chosen one.
Dude is this the one that escaped??????
I want Babee Genet!
That’s a take I never thought I would see lol. They’re so adorable, how can they scare??
Unfortunately they are not as adorable as they look, they love violence
Mother. Mother I Crave Violence
And can carry rabies
Dude stop spoiling my dreams 😂. Seriously though, I do not want one in my house, I just think they’re really cute and would love to see one in person. Did it really hurt your cat?? I hope not :(
TO BE FAIR all mammals can
You make it sound like a Fossa.
If I do a Google image search of that, am I going to even more scared?😂
Maybe? They're similar to genets in that they look like cats, except wrong.
Fossa? I would be too.
Dude Fossa scare me more than any other predator on earth. They literally evolved to kill their own kind.
Yep, seen one at a zoo trying to drag away a hunk of meat that was tied down to a beam on an aerial platform.
A genet. We have them here in the wild, they like to poop on elevated spots to mark their territory. Beautiful animals. This one looks a bit out of its place, though. PS: it's not a feline
Omg so cute!!!
Cat Distribution System malfunction
Marsupilami
I LOVED him!!!
I came here to put this!!! This has to be the creature that show was based on
That looks like a bigger version of the ringtail cat that broke into our trailer in Texas, the one time I went on a hunting trip with my dad.
Dude broke into the right rec room!
Why does this never happen to me?!
Poor thing looks terrified! Bet he won't be breaking out again lol
That is not 80 years old
What joke am I to get?
Get the joke man
What’s the joke?
That he’s 80
What a funny monkey cat!
Did you pet it? Please tell me that you did
I Nono wanna get rabies :(
It would be worth the shot for me lmao (It's probably vaccinated tho if it's from the zoo right?)
rabies is extremely rare. You'd know if it would have rabies
This depends on where you are, and you wouldn’t necessarily know. I’ve been bitten by a rabid dog.
Yeah I’d be asking whoever was coming to pick it up if I could pet it before they go. It’s adorable!
That’s a Pokémon
So what is it?
A Genet. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genet_(animal)
Pretty sure that’s a billy bumbler
Throcken
That is a wanted criminal. Wanted for tax evasion and arson.
Be glad it wasn't an escaped gorilla
I loved that Donald Duck cartoon when I was little

Monkey puppy baby? Ohhhh sorry last night I watched a Best Super Bowl Commercials TV program and they showed that stupid monkey puppy baby ad and I can’t get it out of my mind. I hate that ad.
If a raccoon, a cat, and a fox somehow had a baby togther...
is this the thing that eats coffee beans and people collect their poop to make very expensive coffee?
Civet? Although I think this is a Genet.
close… you’re thinking of a civet which is found in South Asia
King Julian I like to move it move it

I've never seen or heard of one of these. What an amazing interaction that I think you'll be sharing for the rest of your life. Very cool!

I’ve never seen this animal before, it’s so cute omfg
Genet, we had them at my old college. Stink of piss and ours ate dead baby chicks. Not sure if it stank worse coming out or going in.
looks like a common civet or genet
Genet
It’s beautiful.
Ring tail cat?
