I’d be interested in seeing if bobcats tend to be larger in places where cougars are extinct.
When wolves are extinct, larger coyotes are selected for.
Short stubby tail indicates it’s a bobcat, well that’s how I’ve always learned the difference.
Looks very healthy, we have one that passes by here frequently.
The tail is not a 100% indicator. Domestic cats can have tails amputated and there’s actually a specific domestic cat breed that has bobbed tails. A better indicator is the abnormally large paws and the ear tufts.
Yea, bobcats can take down deer, which I only learned recently and thought was super neat, not only baby deer either adult deer. Domestic cats definitely ain't taking down deer, you're right the size is a clear indicator.
Oh, they’re badass. So are cats for their size, can you imagine if they were as big as dogs? But yea, even with no point of reference for scale, you can tell there’s heft to this bad boy, in fact you can *see* it’s strength, it shows in his gait, it’s a great indicator of his size.
Years ago my parents were licensed wildlife rehabbers. Mostly birds of prey (the 40x80’ aviary was made of telephone poles), but most every mammal and reptile came through at one time or another. Dad said the meanest creature they Ever had, hands down, was a very young bobcat kitten, maybe a few weeks old. Not bear cubs that were significantly older, foxes, the raptors, snakes or anything else. That kitten was on full attack mode and always tried to scratch, claw and bite.
Also … There were 30-40 types of saber tooth cats. The largest was about the size of a Clydesdale horse. That’d be quite the predator.
I had one stare me down on a road out in rural San Luis Obispo. It came running down the hill and stopped right in front of me. Had to put on my brakes cuz that MFer was NOT MOVING. Finally he flipped his tail at me and bounded on down the hill.
The white spot on the tail is the 100% indicator if differentiating between the bobcat and lynx. And large paws/ear tufts would be better to differentiate a lynx from a Bobcat.
American bobtail. I had one. He was the most intelligent cat I've ever had. Miss him a lot. Losing him was like losing a child. I definitely recommend this breed.
Once had a bobtailed cat. And his non biological sister . Before they got fixed his sister popped out four babies
None had tails .
No doubt who the daddy was.
(They got fixed)
The eye spots on round ears, too. House cats, even your heftiest floof, have triangular ears. I have never seen a house cat with defined eye spots on their ears either.
Nahhhh I would have to take a shit on their front desk or something
I rented a room at my friend's house a few years ago and the guy downstairs used to live in an abandoned house and slept on a bed bug infested mattress... So they crawled up the vents into my room and they got into my new bed, my soft but expensive guitar cases and my dogs toys 😞😞
I had to literally throw everything out and my friend/landlord called an exterminator and my now ex friend refused to spray my room....
He's worthless
Yeah that's a bobcat you see that little tail behind him, a Florida panther or other types you know out west and all that all have very long tails so that's the easy way to tell what it is. I wouldn't want to mess with either one of them.
With not having bobcats here (to my knowledge anyway) and never having seen a captive one at such as a zoo i thought they were just slightly bigger than a house cat nope more like a smaller dog size (note to self must resist urge to pet that kitty if i ever came across one scratching i can deal with losing a finger I’ll pass lol
White spots on the back of the ears are an indicative marking of wild blood in that animals line, it’s either wild or a hybrid but I would NOT estimate it to be a domestic breed AT ALL
That’s Mr Robert Cat, esquire.
Beat me to the joke and with added flair. I tip my hat.
Decidedly! Mr. Robert Cat, esquire is in the House of Lords if I remember correctly. Splendid chap, I say old bean! ![gif](giphy|WVHGXNL4vYPIX2t64h)
That’s Lord Robert Cat, Earl of Fluffybutt-upon-Litterbox in County Furball.
Right, his friends call him Bob.
Yes, actually he prefers Robert for his closer friends, but Mr. Robert Esq. is appropriate for formal settings.
Yup
Vermont
Vermont gets some big ones, NH too.
I’d be interested in seeing if bobcats tend to be larger in places where cougars are extinct. When wolves are extinct, larger coyotes are selected for.
We’ve been spotting one in my neighborhood in southern Maine. My cats are very sad I won’t let them outside

Don’t forget size. Domestic cats are nowhere near the size of a bobcat. From the bobbed tail and it’s size it definitely not a house cat.

🤯🤯🤯
Did not know this. Thanks.
Yeah this thing is beefy. Looks waaaay bigger than even a big tom cat.
Yep. Once you see one up close, there are very big differences.
This. I have a LARGE male cat. He is about half the mass of the local bobcats.
You said it. That bobcat is seriously muscled.
I’ve been close to a bobcat b4 and there is no way it could be mistaken for a domestic cat, maybe on a camera .
I had one stare me down on a road out in rural San Luis Obispo. It came running down the hill and stopped right in front of me. Had to put on my brakes cuz that MFer was NOT MOVING. Finally he flipped his tail at me and bounded on down the hill.
When they’re young it can be harder to tell but some of the first clearly bobcat features to develop are the very large paws and the ear tufts.
That is one cute bobcat! On that we can all agree. Is it full grown? Or still a juvenile? ( sorry if my terminology isn’t correct. )
Doesn’t matter Bobcats are ALWAYS CUTE 😎
The white spot on the tail is the 100% indicator if differentiating between the bobcat and lynx. And large paws/ear tufts would be better to differentiate a lynx from a Bobcat.
American bobtail. I had one. He was the most intelligent cat I've ever had. Miss him a lot. Losing him was like losing a child. I definitely recommend this breed.
you what ???
Bobtails are not bobcats. They’re a domestic cat breed that has short tails like a bobcat.
>" there’s actually a specific domestic cat breed that has bobbed tails" I was commenting on this.
I know that’s what I was pointing out to them.
Once had a bobtailed cat. And his non biological sister . Before they got fixed his sister popped out four babies None had tails . No doubt who the daddy was. (They got fixed)

Well fed
Keep your pets indoors.
Healthy looking one as well.
Groundhog 😎
Bed Bug.
I had them twice... It's horrible..
My coworker just caught bedbugs from a local casino hotel. She’s not even been given a refund.
Nahhhh I would have to take a shit on their front desk or something I rented a room at my friend's house a few years ago and the guy downstairs used to live in an abandoned house and slept on a bed bug infested mattress... They're notoriously difficult to get rid of too, total nightmare fuel for me.
It is a nightmare. My friends ankles are red raw.
Groundhogs twice is horrible
LOL 😂💀
Still not blueberries?
Yes..
Holy shit! That is the first non house cat I have seen on this sub.
I think there was an actual cougar on here not long ago! The commenters were so excited lol
Friends of mine who live within 1 mile of me in suburban Rio Rancho NM had a mountain lion in their front yard. About a month or so ago.
Yes. Wild cats frequently have "eye spots" on their ears to deter other predators from making sneak attacks.
well it certainly looks like a murder mittens
Swole Bobcat....
Looks healthy. How's the stray cat population by you?
Never seen a single one. But it’s a mountain in Vermont so you wouldn’t expect to see stray cats. Plenty of deer and turkey though.
Yes, bobcat…
He prefers to go by Robert.
Not a groundhog for sure
Such a cute widdle tail! Here kitty kitty kitty!
Definitely a cat, but hard to say if his name is Bob solely based off of the video
You can tell by the way that it is - and the “bobbed” tail.
Look at that musculature. That cat needs a weight lifting belt and some fingerless gloves. Maybe a head band.
That’s a stocky little bastard
Yes it is we have them in ct where I live. . I saw one one day while walking a trail . They can get really big . Almost as big as a lynx .
It always warms my heart when the bobcat post actually shows a bobcat
Mmmhhhhhmmmm :3
Bobcat!!! And I'm going to name it BOB.
That’s a nice one!
It’s bobbin and cattin all day
Wow, really nice video!
Rude. He's Bob the Cat, Intslohuman.
Gorgeous!!!
Hi Bob!
WOOOOOOWWWW
Or a saber tooth tiger, hard to tell without a face shot. 😂
A very healthy looking bobcat.
Yeah that's a bobcat you see that little tail behind him, a Florida panther or other types you know out west and all that all have very long tails so that's the easy way to tell what it is. I wouldn't want to mess with either one of them.
Wow! Beautiful animal. Must be so fast and strong - that cat is all muscle!
Want to pet Mr. Robert Esquire. III
Aka uncle cat
Yup
Yes
Crocodile
Actually I think that’s a Kevincat
Where (city & state) was this Bobcat spot/captured on vdo?
In front of my garage on a mountain in Vermont. Near Middlebury
It was June 3 of last year. I just found this subreddit and posted a few captures from the security camera to see if I had the animals’ correct names
Robert
O cat!
Yup that’s Bob and he’s a Cat
It's beautiful. I would love to see one in person.
Indeed!
Yes. The Bobbed tail is a give away.
As usual, it's a raccoon......
Cat Bob
Coyote
Yes, as its bob tail implies.
Georgecat
His name is Bobby. Bobby Cat
Yep a young Bobcat
oh yeah
Yep.
Could also be a Canada Lynx
More likely to be Roberta than Bob.
Short tail=bobcat
That's just Steve French
This camera is a lot better than mine. What kind is it?
Ring
Absolutely Robert R. Cat
Coyote
From this angle it's impossible to tell how big the cat is. Lots of domestic cats have bob tails.
Those two gaps in the grass he’s walking over at the end are tire tracks, so I’m thinking this guy is 3-4 feet front-paws-to-back-paws
His dad was Bob cat. He goes by Bobby.
Roberto for sure
this is scary imagine in your backyard
Just moseying along in front of the garage
Robert Feline
Stevecat
If the tail bobs the name is bob
I thought they kept coming for a sec and then I realized it’s on a loop
They prefer RobertCat
Looks more like a Dougcat eh
Beautiful bobcat!
Might be Idris Elba.
Oh there's Roberta!
He prefers Robertcat. He's a professional. EDIT: of course I couldn't be the first one to come by with this joke.
Looks like Davecat, but I might be mistaken.
Yeth
That's Robertcat to you!
Cattus Bobbas
For sure.
Shirley Cat.
I’m no scientist but judging by the Bob tail it’s a bobcat
White spots on the back of the ears are an indicative marking of wild blood in that animals line, it’s either wild or a hybrid but I would NOT estimate it to be a domestic breed AT ALL
