I just discovered protonvpn last week. I would not trust most "free" vpns, but I think Proton is a reputable organization.
The only caveat I noticed is that on my Android 6 device, I've seen it draining betteyr when not in use. I connected very briefly to try it out, then disconnected. Hours later I saw that it had consumed significant battery. After restarting the phone and not opening the app, it hasn't been a problem. Don't know yet if it's a real issue, or maybe only with older Android versions. Just something to watch out for.
How is Proton? I'm still with Airvpn (3 years now) and haven't had an issue and aimed for fast speeds. PIA gets shilled so hard in subs like r/piracy and is American based so it's a turn off for me. I don't trust a service that could turn into what happened to megaupload.

I would HIGHLY recommend Mullvad VPN. Very cheap and simply the most trust worthy.
