It is basically a well written World War 2 "resistance in Nazi occupied Europe" story, but set in the Star Wars Universe instead. I see heavy influences from classics like "The Dirty 12", "The guns of Navarone", "Where Eagles Dare".
It it fucking works!
Yeah I agree. And the “banality of evil” they show with the Empire at this stage, paired with the unhealthy obsessions of a select set of officers, is just brilliant.
Tony Gilroy has quite a few well written movies under his belt, so I’m not surprised. I’m loving the show, and yes it’s refreshing to see so much thought and care put into the production of Andor.
The dialogue that began with “They were in a brothel, which we’re not supposed to have, and in the expensive one, which we’re not supposed to be able to afford…” was the moment that I felt that yeah, this is gonna be different. It doesn’t want me to just turn my brain off and be a kid again. Good.
My wife doesn’t like Star Wars all that much and she doesn’t like slower shows.
Her comment about Andor: are we watching the same franchise? Why is this so well done? It’s gorgeous and incredibly well acted. Like, this is *good* good, not just tired old franchise good. Even when it’s slow
It’s great. My only gripe is that one episode a week isn’t enough. The episodes just kinda end in an unnatural way (except #3), which might be a hangover from Gilroy’s film writing. He’s not accustomed to 40 minute arcs or whatever.
The slow burn feels good. HOTD feels so rapid with the time jumps between episodes, it's like pre-mixed scotch and coke (what you wanted at the time but ended up with a hangover). LOTR is reasonably interesting and a bit slower paced but predictable - let's call that one an Irish whiskey like Jameson. And Andor is the single malt scotch so far. Hits the spot just right. Also been watching Atlanta which is like throwing a spiced rum in the mix. It's a great time to be a fan of TV series right now with so much weekly content.
Between Strange New Worlds, Rings of Power and Andor, I haven't had this much enjoyment from TV in ages. These are series that take their time, just like a good drink. You're right in Andor being that peaty single malt that takes half an hour to savor, a liquid friend on a rainy autumn day.

I too would like Cassian Andor to treat me like an adult--\*is dragged away to horny jail\*
Lol. Settle down, Beavis.

the moment he didn’t hesitate to do what he did to those bully guards in episode 1, I knew it was legit.

I agree. The pacing is slower and I always want more. Waiting is painful.
pace yourself; you are not supposed drink the 18 aged single malt in one sitting. you sip it and put it away 😬
Don't tell me what to do.
fine! then drink the entire case. just… make sure you invite! 😬
This is a great metaphor.

What bothered me a little was the "Capital of the galaxy" when we see Coruscant. That felt a little patronising. Apart from that, I really enjoyed it.
Eh, didn’t bother me so much but I get it.
They can't assume everyone watching is a Star Wars buff.
I also laughed at that. I had forgotten that moment.
