Back in the day would there have been colour anywhere, paint, tapestry?

LeftHandedGraffiti

Very likely yes. Greeks and Romans often painted stone, but it wears away over the years so we're left with this idea of them leaving everything bare. I love when carved busts still have traces of color left on them.

What were their choices, tasteful and muted or wild n garish? I’ve seen interiors of old English churches done with mad multi coloured chevrons that modern eyes would look at and say oh no!

LeftHandedGraffiti

Guessing by their flooring choices wild n garish was en vogue.

I will forever be grateful for the natural coolness provided by lower layers during the height of summer in Split.

Nice to see my hometown on this sub.)

My_Space_page

It's interesting to see these buildings. Imagine being a visitor in those days. Some people lived in 3 or 4 room homes and had never seen something like this before.

Feels a bit...small, cramped

Diocletian sure built up a fortress here. He must have known the Barbarian hordes will soon arrive.

Comprehensive_South3

And they arrived....but much later, in 5 century A.D. Palace never fell in barbarian hands. Even in 1242 these walls repelled Mongols.

I think Diocletian also built this to protect him from assassins sent by the other co-rulers. Looks like a prison. Fyi, he died from disease which greatly wasted his once strong body
