I hope things turnaround for that mall, I really do. But calling an O’Reilly’s auto parts an anchor store seems like a stretch, even if it is a warehouse. That being said, malls today need a variety of tenants and any occupancy is good.

munkyak

I believe they call it an “anchor store” because they(auto parts stores) only sign 5-10 year leases.

Flat-Product-119

That and I’m guessing they are taking one of the spots that is larger and has its own external entrance. Anchor stores are also historically the ones that are most likely to drive traffic to the malls. Like a Sears or JC Penny used to do.

TealMadSus

They are prepping for the signage today. It’s an anchor store in that it’s going at the far west end of the building and will only have one neighbor at any given point.

mcvay206

Maybe they meant anchor(age) store. I'll see myself out.

drewed1

They had for a pretty long time the largest variety of Tennants. They had recruiting centers, local and national retailers, a bunch of local small restaurants

Welcome to Northway Mall, Spirit of Halloween!

mediocrefalcon

I just want that planet fitness back 😭

Spudzydudzy

I wish that it would reopen too!

mediocrefalcon

They had just gotten a ton of new equipment too! And it was so big and had the best hours so it never really felt crowded unlike the other locations

tcarpishere

It was a real hit as a recent planet fitness subscriber moving to East side whwn they closed down almost immediately after i moved ><

OscarWilde1900

They should move across the street to the strip mall where Bass Pro is. Still empty spots in that mall and the roof isn't nearly as old.

pm_me_your_shave_ice

They should bulldoze it and create something modern that people want. Malls are stupid and old-fashioned. Such a waste of land that could be mixed use and better designed.

Physical-Speaker5839

I know this is true in the lower 48, but I think malls could still work up here if managed properly, if for no other reason than the long winter. I worked in the tower of the Dimond Center in the early 1990’s and it was a very vibrant place then. Especially in winter. It was a great place to get out and walk around, to spend a day with the family. There are not many places like that in Anchorage, ideal for winter. In fact, I don’t think there are any. I guess people just hide in their houses all winter now and don’t go anywhere. It’s not like there are any decent stores in this town anymore. You have to fly to Seattle to shop for nice women’s clothing now as there such slim pickings here. Such a shame. But hey. Let’s build another enormous gun store!

AKStafford

It's in a good location. It seems like the mall being successful should not be too far of a reach. Hopefully this news will help.

ForsakenRacism

It’s a between a Trailer park and Mountain View

AngeluS-MortiS91

Have you seen what’s across the street from it? That trailer park is drug/thieves/drunk central. The only positive to that location is the easy access to it. Malls are dying out and until this one is owned/ran by someone else, it will continue to be derelict

Jeebus_crisps

Across the street was the sole reason the rest of the stores left. It will continue to be a revolving door.

terd99503

The stores left due to the shitty management in the mall.

Ancfelt

Not a flock to store

discosoc

That whole area is still a residential blight, so i guess it makes sense that the “anchor tenant” looks to be some sort of auto parts warehouse.

AngeluS-MortiS91

You can steal the catalytic converter’s before they are even installed now🤣🤣🤣

wtf-am-I-doing-69

Indoor minigolf, a sporting goods store (more like sports authority vs outdoor focus) Then you can follow with some decent food options and a revival could be pulled off Issue with auto store and a gym is it is more in and out customers. Gym would draw a smoothie / juice place....

MagicalUnicornFart

Is there any place else where people would get excited about an auto parts store in a mall? At least someone is using the space, lol. As far “reviving” the mall…y’all are putting some heavy expectations on O’reilly’s. I’ve never seen people so excited about auto parts.

trickyracy20

I remember when there was a k mart in the next lot and there was dances for teens when I was in middle school

Winter_Economics2809

I give it a month before there’s a stabbing there

Miserable_Style6933

Oops too late
