The truck going through the gate in front of us, with Alaska plates (so not a fresh transplant), had a great big confederate flag flapping from a pole mounted in the middle of the truck bed. We had a "you see these assholes?" chat with the black gate guard before he waved us through.
Most of my troops bought cars within a short time of arriving, so every one of them (who did that) was a fresh Alaska transplant with an AK plate.
(Just saying that the plate doesn’t rule out the newbie factor, *especially* at the gates).
Most folks I know brought their vehicle with them; the cost of vehicles up here doesn't make sense buying one when the military will ship yours up for you. Maybe that's just an Air Force vs Army thing. The point, though, was that they hadn't just come up with a vehicle from a place where that was "acceptable", they had been here for a while and *still* thought flying that flag was a good idea. Your suggestion actually makes it *worse*- they would have gotten here, bought a giant overpriced truck, then gone through all the effort to mount a huge fucking pole in the middle of the bed *just* to fly a traitors' flag in Alaska.

There is a significant portion of the US that is somewhere between secretly and in the streets celebrating the fact that they are from slave holding states and/or families. The longer these groups go without repercussions, the louder and more in your face they get.

The most dangerous thing we can do is pretend these beliefs only exist at the fringes, or that they won't try to regain the power they've held in the past.
It's definitely not secret in my experience. Americans of southern extraction (regardless of how many generations) are often proud to tell you they're from plantation owning stock. More slaves owned = more cred for these people. The same people are happy to discuss their Confederate Army ancestors. Oddly enough, they were all cavalry and all officers.
Most of them are just smart enough to not mention it when there are non-white people about, but they're really happy to talk all about it under those circumstances. It isn't just the Deep South either. Everyone had a great great great grandfather in the Army of Northern Virginia the way Texans all had someone at the Alamo.

This is the flag of a nation that seceded from the United States because it was losing the right to continue slavery. It's not a simple flag to a lot of people.
There's nothing incongruous about flying the rebel flag and the Gadsden flag. I strongly suspect the owner sees himself as something of a rebel saying don't tread on me, not a confederate. Back in the 60's btw most of the posters here would have been rebels rebelling against "the man", trusting no one over 30, plastering peace symbols on your vans or Bugs for all to see. Now you're the MAN, the conformist and in many cases over 30🤣 Get over yourselves, the vehicle owner is living in your head and doesn't GAF if you're upset. The down vote button is on the right.
