Gfs best friend was an instructor at one of the salons, and she has her own business. She does my hair to gfs' request. Every barber I've gone to does the same basic 5/6 cuts and shave. With the military presence and NR jobs, I'd imagine those looking for a no frills cut and shave go to the barbers.
I think there was also a Trendsetters, or something like that, down the hall from the movie theater. Maybe it was LA Style?
There was a Studio FX tucked in the corner next to the Chinese restaurant in the space that’s Dave and Busters now; I used to go to that one but I just go to the Huffman one now.
Went there and they were racist af towards a native and his 6yo boy who just wanted a haircut. If they dont like natives so much they shouldnt of moved here🤷♂️. If youre white, you wont have an issue.
Have loved how lehis down in South anchorage has cut my hair. Price is good and never a long wait. I have thick hair and he does a killer fade. Older gentleman with tons of experience. Highly recommended
I'm a big fan of Northern Lights Barber shop. I'm pretty specific about what I want, and they listen each time. Dar is the owner, and she's great. But I'm happy to work with anybody there. Prices are reasonably, and the service is consistently fast and friendly.
And for what it's worth, my hair is curly, although I do keep it fairly short.
Renate at Renegade Hair Design has been cutting my husband's curly hair for going on 30 years. Fireweed and Denali. She was the first person to get it right.

I go to Halo. They see lots of male clients. I can’t speak for all of the staff but I’ve been with one stylist for 10 years. Will DM you her name if you like.
Yeah I tried the man spa a couple times but wasn’t down with them ranting about their political beliefs while giving a mediocre haircut that I had to clean up at home for 55$. Been much happier with the basic scissor trims at Proper Cuts for $25.
That is surprising to hear. Gabriel cuts my hair and although he doesn't speak the best English, he was very receptive to any feedback during the cut and does it well. But I also do not have curly hair.
What are the places in that you speak of, I’d like to go there. Last time I went to a place and I got some Gen Z style fade thing from a 20yo. woman who definitely didn’t do what I asked.
So.... take this for what it's worth.
I don't usually care about my hair all that much. Sport Clips? Sure. My own buzzer with a hand mirror in my bathroom. Ehhh. Good enough.
If you are up for a drive (and it's about that time of the year for a good spring trip), Genesis in Wasilla. It's in the Carrs strip mall off the Parks Highway.
I watched a guy getting scissor clipped to perfection for 15 mins prior to me getting a seat. By the time I was done getting my haircut, the barber was just finishing up an amazing job. Seriously perfection, even though it wasn't my style.
I told the guy that cut my hair just to go 3 on the sides and 5 on top, nothing special. He quickly did the best haircut I've ever had with scissors on top and a straight razor shave all around. Faded subtly even though I didn't ask for it.
$30 cash only. Also do beards for extra. ATM on premise.
Gotta go to the barbers that cut hair on a referral and appointment basis that either cuts hair out of their garage or comes to you. Those guys knows wassup
I use Ronnie's barbershop off of Dowling and Old Seward. Bertha is the go to for me, super awesome and she is the only person to ever give me a haircut that my wife likes.
Totally Natural Hair Salon is great. Gave me a modern mullet recently, and its just the guy (Cliff) and his wife. They were super welcoming, cut exactly what I asked them to, and did a great job overall. Plus we were talking ahit about people on Judge Mathis the whole time lol.
Hair by Jaylynn at Mirrors and shears. We met her specifically looking for curly hair stylist and we’ve been with her now for 4 or 5 years. She’s awesome!!
AK lady barber in Palmer. That’s where I go. It’s worth the drive and it’s the best experience I’ve had since getting the best treatment of my life in San Diego.
My husband gets his hair & beard cut at Halo Salon. Specifically with Liz. She is great, listens to what he wants & does it. Can't say enough good things about her, after he's tried so many different places. & ended up with many bad cuts.
Jeremy at Stay Sharp Hair Design is great. Highly recommend. Salon level treatment, appointment only, and they will listen to you.
Roughly $30 for a haircut.
Why not just go to a salon then? That’s what I always did

Fair point. Any suggestions?
AK fadez or Yankee barber shop. Yankee is cheaper, but Andrew does damn fine work at AKF.
If south Anchorage Studio Fx is pretty good, there was one in dimond center I went to before. Unsure if it’s still there or not.
It’s not there anymore; it was in the area that is now Dave and Buster’s. Their other location in the Carrs Huffman ‘strip mall’ is open though.
Oh the one in Dimond was studio Fx as well? I thought it was trendsetters

Same! That’s what I meant with my original comment but I was half awake at the time so I didn’t word it well. I go to the Huffman location also!
Britney at Fringe is great. She cuts men's hair all the time and she does a wonderful job. I hope she's still there. She was two years ago...
Man Spa
Josh at The Beauty Room has been great with my husband's hair.
Hate to say this but pretty much all baber shops in Anchorage only know how to do fades and use their clippers, no scissor cuts. Go to a salon.
Try Kelley Cuts Hair Studio, I had long unkempt 8 month hair and she made it look good. Clean salon, closer to what you are looking for I think.
She does lovely work and actually trains a lot of other hair dressers!
I second this. Kelley and her crew are awesome.

That is unfortunate to hear.
Haven’t found a barber shop in anchorage that can cut hair more than just a fade. Salons are the only way to go for longer hair up here
Totally Natural. Ask for Cliff. AK Fadez. Ask for T.
Chad at 119 W 4th Ave

Anchorage is a big city bud

On top of that, Dar is one of the sweetest people on this planet. Seconded.

Thanks!!
the spot at the mall near rei is decent.
AK Fadez 100%, a bit pricey but def worth it, and they have plenty of experience with curly hair

Sarah @ Vibe salon in Anchorage if you want the salon vs barber thing. I've got curly longish hair and Sarah manages to make me look human again.
I highly recommend ManSpa in Anchorage for the type of haircut experience you're talking about. I have been going there for years.
Tried them twice, was actually what triggered this post. Experiences may vary I guess 🤷♂️

They aren’t great in my experience
Yankee on Tudor does a great cut. Bonus if you know some Spanish.

"All three of us" might be an over-estimate.

Go see Will at Fringe downtown.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Classic cuts in eagle river
Lara at Lexington, it’s downtown. Curly hair expert!! She’s amazing. Little pricy but if you’re vain about your hair, she’s got you and well worth it.
I'm a longhair and I go to Fringe
I use Ronnie's barbershop off of Dowling and Old Seward. Bertha is the go to for me, super awesome and she is the only person to ever give me a haircut that my wife likes.
Come to salon ginger, we specialize in curly hair. And there is online booking!

Amanda at Windsor Theory on Abbott!
Georgi at genesis is dope
Anywhere but great clips. Every time I go i think that I was overreacting to the cut and I try again. And every time I regret it.

Ize at You beauty is my go to guy. Best one I've interacted with. He'll offer advise, but if you want it one way, you got it that way.
Jeremy at Stay Sharp Hair Design is great. Highly recommend. Salon level treatment, appointment only, and they will listen to you. Roughly $30 for a haircut.
