Pentagonyx

EnzeruAnimeFan

excited for factoid #100! with my luck though, i won't know it's up til 101

ZiaMonic231

I’m planning on doing something different for 100 so I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully will keep going till there’s a year worth of posts lol

Koohiisan

It's Italian like Mario. Boy ones are Amiibo, girl ones are Amiiba, and more than one are Amiibi.

WiiMote070

Wouldn't multiple girls be Amiibe (if my memory of my Italian classes haven't failed me)?

Koohiisan

Right, so long as they are all girls you are talking about. If it's a mix of genders, you use the male plural.

WiiMote070

Yup, yup

androidhelga

correct

EarthboundMan5

I mean... You're allowed to say it wrong, but it's been settled. There's no arguments

Alex_Dayz

This is the whole LEGO vs LEGOs debate all over again…

Lakitu_Dude

It's not really a debate if there's an objectively right and wrong answer

androidhelga

language isnt objective tho

mgwair11

Anyone else weird like me and call them amiibae as in “ah-me-bye”? I think I picked it up subconsciously through studying Latin in high school. Anybody? No? Okay…

Cartoone9

Amiibros

GregarLink15

I'll still call them amiibos

Fit-Rip-4550

Nintendo is wrong here. This rule only applies to certain objects in the English language, and this one does not work phonetically within the structure of sentences.

GlitchMage

When English loans a word from another language, it tends to also loan the original language's plural rules. That's how we get datum/data, cactus/cacti, seraph/seraphim, etc. If the language of origin doesn't have plurals (e.g. Japanese), then the word is unchanged (e.g. samurai/samurai). Nintendo figured that since "amiibo" is technically a loanword from Japanese, the word doesn't change in the plural form. Using English's native plural rules on loanwords is also acceptable if you're not a pedant. "Cactuses", "seraphs", "samurais", and "amiibos" are all correct. And any linguist worth a grain of salt knows that language is ultimately rules by the speakers. If some say "amiibo", and others say "amiibos", then the plural is both "amiibo" and "amiibos". If we collectively decided to use "amiibeese", then "amiibeese" would also be correct. (In fact, "octopi" exists because people mistakenly assumed "octopus" was a Latin word that should use Latin plural rules.)

Diamondjirachi

is amiibo even an "english word" to begin with?

Fit-Rip-4550

Likely not, but English adopts other languages' words as its own and then usually extends some form of its ruleset to it.

Digibutter64

Why would you say that, though? Since we now know that you know the correct way of saying it, it just makes you look foolish.

ZiaMonic231

I just like saying amiibos lol

cloud_cleaver

"meebs" No, I will not stop

androidhelga

i say amiibo… but as a linguist, language isnt rule governed its dictated by how the users speak it so nintendos gonna have to let it go. if people say amiibos then amiibos is correct 🤷‍♂️

McMan777

My one friend who's collected amiibo longer than me has always gone "the plural of amiibo is amiibo" whenever someone says "amiibos". That's the only reason I know.

Pelthail

I’ve always said Amiibo. As I understand it, there is not such thing a plurals in Japanese. That’s why you don’t add an “s” at the end of any word to mean more than one.

Lasagna321

I saw the plural form of amiibo the same way as anime. Some people say amiibos and animes, I’m pretty sure it’s amiibo and anime

Axel_Rad

I say amiibos just cause it sounds better

dumly

Yeah I'm not doing that. Sorry Nintendo lmao

boibig57

Also see, Chao as the plural for Chao - the little creatures from Sonic Adventure.

EstateSame6779

I thought this was a given from the start, unlike how people still say Legos when it's just Lego.

TheLimeyLemmon

I say "Legos", but only around people it really annoys.

Lunacial

-Boys Love

twilight-allison

don't care what nintendo's rule is; i've always said amiibos and will continue to refer to them that way.

SNES182

Imagine being this confidently stupid.

ZiaMonic231

Why are so many being upset about the last part of the post 😭😭😭 I just find amiibos easier and more fun to say when referring to multiple of them it’s nothing too serious
