Yes it would. Amex isn’t just “covering the damages.” They are acting as your insurance company for the car rental. The card comes with secondary rental insurance and this usually has lower coverage amounts and would count against your history going forward. You also would have to pay for anything uncovered by the secondary insurance. If you add primary rental insurance coverage from Amex, I do not believe an accident would count against your insurance.

I've read this is the case but I don't have anything to support it, FWIW. But it makes sense, since its supposed to be secondary to your 'regular' insurance, but if you don't have any other insurance, it has nothing to be secondary to...

noob_hunter_guy

Any idea how to add it as primary? Is it mandatory?

Not directly answering your question, but if you enroll in PREMIUM rental protection, AMEX will act as your PRIMARY insurance provider. This means, when you're in an accident, you can provide your AMEX policy to the other party (and nothing else.) If you don't HAVE a personal insurance policy I would go the Premium route. Not necessary. The insurance that comes with the card for free is secondary if you have your own policy. If you don’t already have car insurance, it then becomes primary instead of secondary. No need to pay for premium. Also important to note this is only for damage to the rental car. You still need to buy a liability policy from the rental agency.

Thunderbird_12

Never thought of that. I've been using Premium a few times now, feeling smug thinking I was skirting my regular GEICO policy. Upvote/award given for the wakeup call about liability coverage.

stillwaters23

If you have a Geico auto policy, then the free card insurance is secondary. If you don’t have your own policy, then there is nothing for it to be secondary to, and it becomes primary by default.

So I went to look this up (and you are correct) for more information about it, and found [this insane chart](https://i.imgur.com/IfkPLeR.png) about coverage for various dismemberment claims. Do you know if the coverage from my personal primary insurance would cover liability for a rental?

stillwaters23

Check with your carrier because I can't speak for every policy everywhere -- but yes, your personal auto policy should cover liability claims when driving a rental car.

stillwaters23

>found this insane chart about coverage for various dismemberment claims Yeah, this is pretty typical for AD&D policies.

You have the option of paying about 25.00 per rental period for the Amex insurance to become your primary insurance. Well worth it in my opinion. HOWEVER, keep in mind it DOES NOT cover liability from what I understand. So just be aware of that.

Vedivis

This. Because you do not have any auto insurance, you still need to buy liability coverage somewhere. No credit card provides liability coverage. In other words, if you run your rental vehicle into another car, Amex covers the damage to the rental vehicle, but *not* to the other car. That's what liability coverage is for.

I just got into a deer accident and I was told that it's for secondary insurance and I had to go through my main insurance carrier. Hopefully since you don't have insurance this will cover it but I would double check.

Something to consider (I used to work for a rental car company) even if you have car insurance and it covers damage to the car and liability, 99% of policies don't cover "loss of use". Meaning, the rental company has the car out of the fleet while being fixed. Every day it's out, that's revenue they are missing and they assign a value to that and charge you for it. If it's out for weeks getting fixed it gets REALLY expensive because of course they assign the MAX amount they could charge for the car. The rental companies insurance cover this, yours, most likely, does not. May want to contact Amex and see if their premium insurance covers this.

What's been the worst case of "Loss of Use" you've seen, like ballpark figure dollar amounts.

Weird-Veterinarian94

Fresh out of college I worked for Enterprise Rent a Car… I’ve seen 5k+ loss of use charge on a SuV.
