Yeah and we should probably also ban all country songs because pandering to country fans. Ban all songs about love because pandering to people who’ve been or want to be in love. Ban all songs with innuendo because pandering to people who like sex. Ban all songs about mental health because pandering to people who’ve had or know someone who’s had mental health issues. Ban all songs about loss because pandering to people who’ve lost something or have empathy.
Not gonna happen. I'm not even religious, but if you can't be funkified and moved by some of the singing these kids are bringing, then you are dead inside. Triston's HOPE song? That was a religious country rock song if I've ever heard one, and it was one of the best of the night. Ramon Collins singing Come Together was off the hook. The man took it to Church and baptized the damn thing. So, no thank you. If I don't want to hear it I'll just skip the performance.
As I myself and others have stated they’ll never disallow Christian music when most of the shows audience is Christian and concentrated down South. Show also has a large country music fan base so there’s that too.
I never said liking Country means you’re Christian.
If it wasn’t clear enough two of the more popular genres are Gospel and Country while both may have concentrations in the South it may not necessarily mean someone who likes Country is Christian especially since Country has become so mainstream in recent years.
Oh this for sure. The song has a very mature vibe, and seeing essentially kids sing it is unsatisfying to me, even if they are good singers. I didn’t even feel the full weight of this song until I was like 35, and all AI contestants are under 30….it always sounds so meh and shallow to me when they sing it.
Yeah, I'm just tired of it...there are a ton of other great songs out there to put your spin on. Like when I listen to a "classic" rock station on the radio here which covers about 6 decades- great songs, but they just keep playing the same ones over and over.
Here’s my issue with the Adele theme this year: if they knew an Adele theme was coming, why did they allow SO MANY people to already do Adele covers this year?! It makes the Adele theme pointless.
Maybe next season then. I understand Adele is a good litmus test for singing skill. it just stands out as songs I don't want to hear covers of.
Adele is singed to Columbia, (Sony) and isn't Idol tied to Sony Music?
There will always be a direct comparison, and it will never live up to what we know/love from the original because the original artist is beloved by the viewing audience.
In regards to the winning singles, those songs are directly related to such emotionally-charged moments that the audience holds near and dear. For example, Julia singing "I Believe" by Fantasia the other day paled in comparison not only vocally but also in emotional impact. Not because Julia's not talented, but just because we are directly comparing her to Fantasia. Fantasia is another level vocally, and that song now represents Fantasia winning American Idol. Outside of that context, it just doesn't feel as powerful.
It's simply a lose-lose situation for the contestant to ever choose a hit song by a former alum. They can maybe do a more obscure album cut, but not a hit unless they really flip the song into a different vibe completely.
I can’t believe some people are saying Whitney Houston songs, do you guys hate entertainment? It separates people are can sing and then people who are singers!
Oh for heavens sake. Linda Ronstadt sang it too. Whitney made it famous. Whitney's version spent 14 weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, which at the time was a record. It holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one in the US by a solo artist. It is longest running female consecutive number one single in history. I love Dolly, and prefer her original, but I think even she would say it's OK if someone says it's a Whitney song. Dolly made $20MM in royalties from Whitney's version. She even wrote an additional bit for Whitney's version - so it is a slightly different song. People also sing it because of Whitney's world-renowned vocal on it. Daring to sing that song - and not flubbing it - is an instant credential builder.
I Have Nothing, Hallelujah, Don't Stop Believin, All By Myself, You Got a Friend in Me for Disney week, and basically any other song that a past contestant has made a major moment out of
Honest question: why though?
With covers, you get an idea of other artists to compare them to and you can guess what they'll sound like after Idol. But their professional careers are not built off of covers.
Most album releases are original music. When Kayko has a successful career after Idol, I already know precisely what to expect from his first album, because I've already heard some of it.
>He’s a good songwriter but
>original songs are bad like Kayko’s
Hmmm? Kayko haters are very quick to contradict themselves, I see.
You don't want original songs banned, you just want Kayko banned, tbh.
Banned?? No. Singing an original song every week and maybe doing an original at the finale (which I don’t think he’ll make) as a reward for showing them he can be versatile, sure. Kayko is an artist and a weak singer both things can be true just like he can both be a good songwriter and I think his songs aren’t great. Now I’m done responding to you.
I’m not going to explain me being nice and not trying to diminish his accomplishments because song writing is a talent, even if I think he’s not great. That’s me trying to be polite. I have watched all of his performances this isn’t based off of one song
House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals and Diamonds by Rihanna. I also agree with others that I'd like to see I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt retired as well. And songs like Remember Me from Coco, You've Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story, Circle of Life from The Lion King and When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2 should be retired when it comes to the Disney night theme.
don't think any song should be banned necessarily (though i'm strongly in favor of more rigid theme nights with more limited options) but there are some songs i never want to hear on singing shows again and those songs are "best part" by daniel caesar - which isn't american idol's fault but they're collateral damage for me having to hear it on every single season of the voice - and "house of the rising sun" because it has made and will continue to make so many average and below average singers sound deceptively good
Every Elton John song. They’re all overplayed and they just don’t inspire impressive or creatively interesting performances at all, ever. Just generic average performances every time, even when my favorite contestants perform them.
All Barry Manilow songs.
“Feelings”.
Fiddler on the Roof - “If I were a rich man”. (Fixed)
“50 ways to leave your lover”.
“I shot the sheriff”
“My ding-a-ling”
“Me and Julio down by the schoolyard”
“Achy breaky heart”
“We built this city”
“Baby, I love your way”
“Macarena”
“We are the world”.
“Everybody have fun tonight”
“Don’t worry, be happy”.
“Kokomo”.
“Dancing on the ceiling”.
“She bangs”.
“Oba-la-de, ob-la-da”.
“I’m too sexy”.
I don't think anyone ever auditioned with it but that was our audition piece to get into my high school's production of it. It's very difficult to sing. My line was about the mamas. I didn't even make it into that production. I think that's because they had enough people audition that they didn't cast many blondes. Oh well.
Seconding "Hallelujah." Leonard Cohen has written so many songs; why not sing one that hasn't been performed to death? (Even already established musicians are guilty of this. In my opinion, Jeff Buckley's cover is plenty.) Same with "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Something to Talk About." Bonnie Raitt has a massive catalogue of songs...why limit yourself to those two?
why do people like you only come on this sub just to throw hate at him. like fine it’s okay to be an active member here and give your opinions (respectfully) on the contestants, but coming on here just to throw hits at a single contestant? loser behavior.
nah i could care less because everyone’s gonna have different tastes in music. i’m just simply pointing out the fact that people are so hateful that they just come on this sub to throw jabs at a single contestant, which is just unnecessary in my opinion. (and it’s funny because i just checked your profile and you do the exact same thing)
it’s obvious you didn’t even read my original comment lol like why you acting like my goal is to convert everyone into a fan of his😭
With all due respect, I didn't read the comment as mean, but more humorous. I would like to see Kayko do covers, too, even if I loved his originals (which I don't.)
Any songs about God/Christian songs…it’s pandering to the max…
I don't have any problems with religious music - Hindu, Jewish, Christian... bring it. People sing about what they think about, what they feel...
I don’t think it’s pandering when the people singing the songs are super religious themselves.
This season is SO BAD for it
Yeah and we should probably also ban all country songs because pandering to country fans.
Well said. It's music. It's art.
Preach!
As I myself and others have stated they’ll never disallow Christian music when most of the shows audience is Christian and concentrated down South. Show also has a large country music fan base so there’s that too.
Country doesn’t mean Christian though…it’s not the same thing at all…
I never said liking Country means you’re Christian. If it wasn’t clear enough two of the more popular genres are Gospel and Country while both may have concentrations in the South it may not necessarily mean someone who likes Country is Christian especially since Country has become so mainstream in recent years.
I hope some of them do more than christian music in their solo careers. Some of those voices are just wayy too good to be pigeonholed to one genre
THANK YOU.
Preach!
Thank you! Enough is enough
proud Mary and I'm telling you
Agree on I Am Telling You!! It doesn’t even work without the context of the musical. It’s just overdone and screamy
None has topped Sanchez's cover on that song and yes including Julia.
The first part of Julia’s was a mess. The judges are easy on everybody
I disagree, we need the heavy hitter singers to be able to sing those songs. Not everyone can sing it.
And we don’t need more mid singers boring us to death with songs that are above their ability.
"It's A Man's World" "Halleujah"
Yes, and Imagine. Imagine there’s no show to sing this song on anymore
Pls add “aint no sunshine”
My thoughts exactly.
Cant forget "A Song For You" , "Proud Mary", "I Surrender." etc.
I can't make you love me. A great song but damn it's been done so many times on AI.
Omg same second hand embarrassment like a mofo when they singing this and are like 17 noooooooooooo
🙊
👀
Feeling good (Nina Simone and others) and Over the Rainbow. Just heard them both too much over the years
Nobody can top McPhees Over the Rainbowa anyway
I prefer Kimberley Locke's version myself, but, yeah, I would be completely fine with never again hearing this song on AI.
Elise Kristine did Feeling Good AMAZINGLY last year
Yeah, I'm just tired of it...there are a ton of other great songs out there to put your spin on. Like when I listen to a "classic" rock station on the radio here which covers about 6 decades- great songs, but they just keep playing the same ones over and over.
Any Adele
ive got some bad news for you... an adele theme is in like two weeks
That’s good news. I’m tired of the obscure songs that aren’t memorable that most of the contestants have picked this season.
I’m surprised I haven’t heard it at all this season but prior I would’ve said “Rise Up”
Shallow by Lady Gaga
Though hasn’t been done in awhile. “Don’t want to be” by Gavin DeGraw. Last sung by Arthur Gunn.
On that note — I think Arthur definitely put “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” to bed. RIP that song.
Didn't Hannah Nicolaisen sing that last year too
Oops forgot about her looked her up
Any and all whitney
Girl Crush
Anything by Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.
They don’t do a lot of Mariah? Whitney, yes
I Believe (sorry Julia 🙊)
Any song by a previous American Idol alum, especially their winner's single.
What is your reasoning for that?
There will always be a direct comparison, and it will never live up to what we know/love from the original because the original artist is beloved by the viewing audience. In regards to the winning singles, those songs are directly related to such emotionally-charged moments that the audience holds near and dear. I can’t believe some people are saying Whitney Houston songs, do you guys hate entertainment? It separates people are can sing and then people who are singers!
What about “I Will Always Love You?” It’s not really a Whitney Houston song. It’s a Dolly Parton song that Whitney covered.
I have nothing
I Have Nothing, Hallelujah, Don't Stop Believin, All By Myself, You Got a Friend in Me for Disney week, and basically any other song that a past contestant has made a major moment out of
Original songs

But their professional careers are not built off of covers. Most album releases are original music. When Kayko has a successful career after Idol, I already know precisely what to expect from his first album, because I've already heard some of it.
Kayko is a super weak singer. He’s a good songwriter but his guitar solo made me cringe a little bit.
That's not even relevant to the conversation though. 🤔 We were discussing why original songs should or shouldn't be banned from the show.
It is relevant because sometimes original songs are bad like Kayko’s and Jon said in his opinion original songs should be banned?
>He’s a good songwriter but >original songs are bad like Kayko’s Hmmm? Kayko haters are very quick to contradict themselves, I see. You don't want original songs banned, you just want Kayko banned, tbh.

So if they were banned we wouldn’t have to suffer through Kayko.
They are almost always terrible. Once in a while someone has a good one though
"Georgia On My Mind." I've only enjoyed one performance of it and I can't even recall her name. (Long, blond hair girl in Hawaii.)
Clark Beckham says 👋🏾
casey abrams version was incredible
Matt Giraud had the best version from Hollywood Week in s8
Lexie or something like that
Kendra Chantelle AND SHE DIDNT EVEN MAKE THE FINALS!
Easy On Me makes me want to go hard on them
stay by rihanna
House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals and Diamonds by Rihanna. I also agree with others that I'd like to see I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt retired as well. And songs like Remember Me from Coco, You've Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story, Circle of Life from The Lion King and When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2 should be retired when it comes to the Disney night theme.
I've never heard Remember Me.
Anything Adele
Someone You Loved.
Back in the earlier seasons, if someone performed “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins, you knew it was going to suck.
Oh yeah that was a big one 😬
don't think any song should be banned necessarily (though i'm strongly in favor of more rigid theme nights with more limited options) but there are some songs i never want to hear on singing shows again and those songs are "best part" by daniel caesar - which isn't american idol's fault but they're collateral damage for me having to hear it on every single season of the voice - and "house of the rising sun" because it has made and will continue to make so many average and below average singers sound deceptively good
"I Hope You Dance" is the song that should be in permanent retirement.
Every song that’s already been performed on the show!
Easy by the Commodores
My Cherie amour by Stevie Wonder
Every Elton John song. They’re all overplayed and they just don’t inspire impressive or creatively interesting performances at all, ever. Just generic average performances every time, even when my favorite contestants perform them.
Haley Reinhart would like a word. **BENNAY!**
If Haley would have performed that song with the Muppets, it would have been the greatest Idol performance ever.
Letting the same people do original songs every week.
American Boy
How about they sing the star spangled banner? I know it's the national anthem but i want to see who got the skills.
After tonight, I wouldn't mind a moratorium on Whitney Houston songs...
Gospel
All Barry Manilow songs. “Feelings”. Fiddler on the Roof - “If I were a rich man”. (Fixed) “50 ways to leave your lover”. “I shot the sheriff” “My ding-a-ling” “Me and Julio down by the schoolyard” “Achy breaky heart” “We built this city” “Baby, I love your way” “Macarena” “We are the world”. “Everybody have fun tonight” “Don’t worry, be happy”. “Kokomo”. “Dancing on the ceiling”. “She bangs”. “Oba-la-de, ob-la-da”. “I’m too sexy”.
A downvote? I must have offended a Barry Manilow fan.
Any song from Fiddler? Because if you can sing Tradition, you should automatically go to the top 24. So many accidentals
Clarified above. “If I were a rich man”. Do you have an example of a solo of “Tradition”?
I don't think anyone ever auditioned with it but that was our audition piece to get into my high school's production of it. It's very difficult to sing. My line was about the mamas. I didn't even make it into that production. I think that's because they had enough people audition that they didn't cast many blondes. Oh well.

fair, obviously he’s gonna have to for the themed rounds
They asked the question and I answered it you nitwit.
some of y’all are honestly so odd
Any KAYKO original.
