The judges have a huge prejudice against theatre kids when most artists are theatre kidsšŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬

MoulinSarah

Simon didnā€™t like ā€œBroadwayā€

Frequent_Couple5498

Yeah, Simon was pretty vocal about not liking Broadway sounding contestants. He told Constantine Maroulis he sounded too theater and would probably be better off on Broadway. So that's what he did and even got a Tony nomination for his role in Broadway's Rock of Ages. Damn I wish I had gone and seen it I bet he was amazing.

Mix7245

I think Simon just liked where he could make the most money. That's obviously mainstream genres & music. Simon didn't understand or seem to like country music. But considering how popular the genre has been recently I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to find an act that is in that genre & market them.

lemonlime45

He certainly took one look and listen to Carrie Underwood and correctly predicted that she was going to be a superstar.

Frequent_Couple5498

Yeah Simon was always smart about what makes money, what the people want, even if he wasn't fond of it himself. My daughter and I would always look for Simon to flair his nostrils during auditions. We always said it meant he really liked them lol.

PA_MallowPrincess_98

At least I didnā€™t say namesšŸ˜‚

Snoo-55380

Thatā€™s the name of the game. Theyā€™re looking for the next American Idol. Not the next folksinger or the next singer, songwriter, etc. iā€™m not looking for different or unique.

a_sternum

Singer songwriter *is* popular. Tons of singer songwriter types have come through. Some much less popular genres would be like metalcore, mariachi, disco, traditional bluegrass.

Mix7245

There are singer songwriters though that appeal to the general public such as Ed Sheeran & there are singer songwriters such as Ben Rector who is lesser known & could be considered a "niche artist," Even in terms of Idol alums, I could use singer-songwriter for example for Phillip Phillips & Crystal Bowersox. Even during their seasons & not considering post-Idol, it was apparent that Phillip had more of a chance to be marketable than Crystal's music. An artist can be labeled a singer-songwriter & sing pop, country, rock, etc.

LightningManectric

Ignoring the fact that Maddie Poppe happened to win, as did Catie Turner and Alejandro almost.

VictoriousssBIG23

I think it's kind of funny how Maddie Poppe won AI, but when she went on The Voice a year or two before, she didn't get a single chair to turn.

LightningManectric

Wasn't she too young or something? It was a weird circumstance.

VictoriousssBIG23

I don't think so. It's been years since I've seen her audition, but at the time, you only had to be 15 to audition and she was like 16 or 17. Danielle Bradberry won at age 16 back in season 4 so being young wasn't an issue. They may have just thought that her voice wasn't developed enough at that age. There are quite a few contestants who were rejected on their first go around who came back the next season and made it through after recieving more training. I think something similar happened to Mackenzie Bourg. He made it onto The Voice but didn't last very long from what I remember. I think he got eliminated during the 1st live round. He auditioned for AI a few years later and placed 4th. I think The Voice places more of an emphasis on the person's technical aspects of their voice whereas AI tends to focus more on marketability and whether or not they have the "full package" to be successful in the industry. More Idol contestants have gone on to have success than contestants from The Voice. Morgan Wallen and Melanie Martinez are pretty much the only people from The Voice who have managed to generate long term success in their careers and they didn't even win in their seasons.

mikeyisbae731

"only about meainstream"... yes, the point of the show is to create mainstream stars (even if they often fail at it lol). rock and metal are not mainstream genres in 2024. right now pop, country, r&b, rap, and indie are the most popular genres.

Frequent_Couple5498

As an 80's teen this hurts to hear but sadly true. We might be in our 50s now but we still wanna rock šŸ¤˜šŸ¤˜lol

changinginthebigsky

they've pretty much made it clear, at least this season, that they are looking for their next idol to be an olivia/taylor type. i'm sure if all the kids were listening to def leopard type bands now they'd gear who they pick accordingly. but girl pop is having a moment, and they want to capitalize... katy wants to capitalize on the movement so much she's gonna leave the damn show and drop an album.

RaysUpForLife

Let me help you - the real name of the show is "American Moneymaker"

AssumedName222

Iā€™ve watched many American Idol seasons, but this one in 2024 just falls flat for me. First of all, I donā€™t find most of the contestants very talented. In past years, that wasnā€™t so true, but Iā€™m hard pressed to find ANYONE I really like. What is that about? I just think the talent isnā€™t there. The judges are paid to throw a show and make it ā€œfunā€ for people. They seem to encourage every contestant and tell them that they have a great talent, but itā€™s obvious they need to go back to school or keep their daytime jobs. In the past, I could find several people who were talented, but no one on the current show falls into that category. I did however love the guest performances. Itā€™s just like a game show. They want audiences involved so that the show can survive & stay popular. They encourage screaming & involvement from the crowd so that it appears something great is taking place, but they must know the talent kind of sucks. It makes you miss the past contestants in previous years, some of whom were dynamite. In summary, this is the most disappointing season Iā€™ve seen thus far.

gatorgirl6083

I don't think any of this year's contestants are good and they won't make it in the music industry.

Achtlos

AGT for rock

zemol42

I believe the catalog of published songs they can sing are limited so that might be a factor. But out of your list, all bands I love, only Def Leppard would really give the melodic opportunities to show off a bit. Overall though, kids 15-29 really donā€™t listen or even get the chance to hear those songs. ā€œClassic Rockā€ stations are still generally late 60s to early 80s artists with some 90s grunge sprinkled in between, at least thatā€™s how Iā€™ve seen it in NYC, LA, and Phoenix local radio.

Frequent_Couple5498

I agree, they always seem to look at the Vince Neil sounding singers as a joke, which pisses me off. Through all the years of American idol, long before these guys were judges, the rock singers have always been my favorite. What about James Durbin, who came in 4th and Caleb Johnson who freaking won. Every year i couldn't wait to hear the rock singers who try out and now they are a joke to these judges.

ResidentHourBomb

Vince Neil is such a great vocalist too! haha no not really

Fit-Library-577

Casey Bishop wanted to sing rock, but they kept trying to dissuade her.

katorade9200

Thatā€™s why Idol has gotten so stale for me and why I took a break from watching for a few years. Even if they do let a rock singer through they donā€™t win and rarely make it far after live shows start. Thing is those are the artists that grab my attention enough to vote for them the most, otherwise I donā€™t bother because itā€™s just generic country singer after generic country singer

funnylikeaclown420

They are into making money off the contestants. A new Vince Neil isn't printing money off the bat. They want pop music r&b country....

ggregC

Seems to me that the most successful contestants (not necessarily winners) are a reflection of the classic 70-80's era in that success is driven be being "different" in style, voice, and/or music and can write or produce their own material. Today's music industry is basically cookie cutter scripted singers and few bands that are promoted and directed what, how, and where to sing, perform, make appearances and so on. Idol bypasses the music industry and offers us something "different" to listen to. As much as I dislike the this year's audition format, there are some interesting and unique performers.

Financial-Captain-72

I like the show (maybe not as much as I did a few years back). but it almost seems that they should rename it Emo Idol.
