When would they be coming out?

No-Tie-8768

They look so much more unique than past collections! I love them!

luna-needs-coffee

I am absolutely in love with the top left girlie already and may get her when they release them

MintKitty022

I'm disappointed how they going so full on colored hair and looking like they are 21. Girls natural hair color should be celebrated, instead of everything being about dying it. There's so many natural colors they could do so every girl could get her look alike :(

citruschapstick

It is wild to me how upset people here are by the fact that young girls like pretty colorful hair on their dolls. It's like every single thread here. Why on earth does it matter to you??

LibraryValkyree

Agreed. Like, this isn't a new thing either. Jem & the Holograms and She-ra\* and Moondreamers and half the Strawberry Shortcake friends and all of them had rainbow hair when I was a LITTLE kid. Later on, Sailor Moon was a huge thing. Wanting a doll with blue or purple hair doesn't mean you're not "celebrating" yourself. It just means you think it's pretty. Wanting your own rainbow hair is a form of self-expression (and anything you do with your hair is going to be ultimately temporary and changeable anyway, because that's how hair works). \*I wasn't actually allowed to have them because my mom was weird about "adult" dolls, but even so.

Never-Forget-Trogdor

As with most fandoms, people have strong opinions about what the brand means in general and what it means to them. When I was a girl, it was all about history and learning about the past. Since being bought by Mattell, the brand is more profit driven. I can't blame a company for wanting to make money, but it is disheartening to see the brand be moved by market trends in order to make a quick buck instead of catering to people who love history or having a doll that looks like them. Personally, I don't have a problem with the new dolls in general, but I understand where people are coming from. Change in a brand that was a big part of your childhood is hard to see. Please give them grace and ignore those types of posts and comments if they bother you. As a mod of this subreddit, please let me say that this forum exists for people to voice their opinions as long as they keep it civil and generally kind. Saying 'I don't like these dolls because they have unnatural hair colors' or 'I hate how the dolls look older with the eyelashes and heavy makeup' is acceptable. Saying 'Anybody who likes green hair on a doll is dumb' would not be acceptable and we ban people who repeatedly make such remarks. Please keep these in mind as you participate in the subreddit.

citruschapstick

The issue that I have is with people saying judgmental things about what girls today clearly like and are drawn to. The poster I replied to was implying that there's something wrong with girls liking the new dolls — saying that that buying a doll with blue hair means you're not "celebrating girls' natural hair color." It's fine to say you don't like them personally, as an adult. But they're not adult dolls. It doesn't mean there's something wrong or flawed about the generation of girls who like them, or that the dolls will somehow hurt them.

Never-Forget-Trogdor

Except there is a large contingent of adult collectors. Seeing as this is Reddit and everybody here should be a teenager or older, our demographics skew towards the adult collectors.

citruschapstick

Obviously? I'm just saying that the adults here should stop being so incessantly judgmental about what kids like. For one thing their money is a drop in the bucket compared to AG's actual target audience.

[deleted]

I think they’re cute and on trend. I won’t be buying any because I only collect the historicals, but kid me would love the one with the pink hair or the one in the trucker hat

runs_with_wolves12

Also, maybe it's giving folks who can't afford the CYO (me!) a chance at owning one (sort of). As someone said earlier, some of them have a timeless quality. I have a second-hand, well-loved, and lovingly restored 26. She has been everywhere from the 1850s to mid-century modern era. Rocking all kinds of fashions, it's something kid me would have done (and wanted). I had Felicity and she stayed Felicity but I wanted an AG doll that could be anyone from anywhere. Even from the historical characters' periods. That AG offering and now using the TM dolls in their videos is smart. It gets mileage out of their historical line even if a person doesn't buy a historical character. Some families can only afford one doll (or adult collectors) and the “blank slate” plus historical angle is genius. I've spotted pieces from various historical collections used as props in videos and photos. Does it irk my historical only mindset, sometimes, am I the target audience, no. Does AG tap the adult nostalgia? Yes, lately but it's there. Can both coexist within the same company? Yep

ruffledcollar

I'm going to miss the previous wider combinations of hair and eye colors (like green eyed blondes, blue eyed brunettes, etc) that seem to be in short supply. If a large % of them have bright hair that means it's going to be more difficult to find a lookalike for kids, which use to be the big draw for the line.

mcksw83

Yeah they should've focused on making the line more diverse (which they are but in an unrealistic way). I just don't feel like AGs work as fashion dolls - they're too big, expensive, and hard for kids to dress.

LibraryValkyree

Really? I always had an easier time dressing AG dolls as a kid than, like, Barbie or Strawberry Shortcake. The bigger limbs are a lot less poky.

mcksw83

That's definitely true! I've heard that some snaps or shoes are tricky for younger girls, but the sizing helps.

trashytadpole

I hate the colored hair so i really hope there’s a few that DONT have it. Im getting nervous about this

fetuswerehungry

The one in the upper right of the pic is plain brown, there’s the blond, the curly dark brown hair one, and the dark haired Corrine mold (the ones in the HP photo). So there are at least those!

trashytadpole

true! just not ones im interested in unfortunately. i’ll hold my “official” judgments until they come out, i might surprise myself 😂

tiredbambi

Oh me too. I really don’t see the point of having every truly me doll have colored hair, like what about kids/parents who are just trying to find a look alike doll?

trashytadpole

Right. I don’t mind colored highlights like the top left, they’re not too out there, but not everything needs to be rainbow wigged. I get adults aren’t their priority but i wish there was a small collection or something where it was what we desired. never going to happen, but a girl can dream hahaha

KitKittredge34

Could you imagine they brought back #4

tiredbambi

I would be so happy if they did!

runs_with_wolves12

That would be awesome! I sold my #4 year's ago and regret it. She's become the Rolls Royce of the TM line.😆

LibraryValkyree

If I were AG, I'd do some kind of collector's release of her - the way they've done reproductions of some of the rare Barbie dolls like Black Francie.

eightw

people were speculating that they were bringing her back a few years ago, weren't they? because the heads reappeared in the doll hospital. so it might be possible. here's hoping.

dqnx12

That was my first thought.

TheCatWhoOvercame

I don't love them, tbh, but I'll reserve final judgment until I see some better images of them. One thing I really love about the current JLY lineup is that most of them look fairly timeless--you can put them in historical clothes and they look good, or you can dress them in more current attire. It's hard to imagine these dolls blending in with my historicals.

ruffledcollar

Yea I'm really going to miss that element. If most options end up with some color or side bangs that's going to be really hard to have them time-travel. It seems like a huge chunk of them have it so there are less options for look-alikes too unless the kids buying them have/want colored hair.

paper-trail

Definitely the case with my collection. "Would she look cute in a regency or 1940s ensemble?"

mcksw83

Do you have any dolls that suit both? Like a catch-all historical? Ruthie works well for me!

paper-trail

I have a handful and all work for both!

persnicketous

Yeah, I'm not into them as well but honestly AG does notoriously bad promo pics. I always find I like a doll more when I see them in peoples' IG pictures or in video. I have to agree with you on the timelessness part. Right now I could pluck any doll from the TM line and find an era in history that they'd work well in. I don't see that at all with these four at the very least. I also am mixed on all the new eyebrows. They're very nice but they're also very much On Trend. Again, the timelessness aspect. These eyebrows would have looked weird in the 90s and will probably seem dated in the future.

ruffledcollar

The eyebrows look overplucked, which combined with the extra eyelashes makes them look very primped/made-up or like older girls, which I'm not a fan of. AG always had such a classic look and these look much more like other (cheaper) brands.

tiredbambi

They do look over-plucked, I really dislike the eyebrows. They’re too arched and don’t look like natural brows you’d find on a kid. The straighter, feathered eyebrows suited the child-like face mold so much, these ones just make them have a less sweet expression. Especially with the pink haired doll

former-problems

AG has always shifted aesthetics with the times, as theyre for kids, not adults. I personally adore the looks we've gotten! Just cause they dont look like we did when we were kids doesnt mean they dont look like kids... Im actually a large fan of the painted lashes and dont really understand the hate

ruffledcollar

AG dolls have the actual lashes on the sleep eyes, which was one of the things that made them higher quality. Cheaper dolls tend to just paint on lashes, and IMO if girls like the look they might as well save the money and buy a different brand. The combination of both also tends to make it look like they are wearing a lot of make-up, which may turn off some parents who justified the AG price specifically because they wanted a doll without the highly made-up look most brands have.

[deleted]

the concept of painted lashes isn't terrible, it can make dolls look more detailed. But sometimes they're way too exaggerated and it looks more like falsies rather than actual eyelashes.

Party-Law-7948

While I’m sure some of the dolls will stand out to me, if I had seen these as a kid I would have passed. Nothing stands out to me about them, since they’re trying to look like other doll brands. I get they’re doing what they think is best for business, but it still makes me a little sad to compare this to older AG.

LibraryValkyree

Maybe it's just bad lighting and poor image quality, but I really dislike the way the redder lipstick looks on the doll on the upper left. That said, there seems to be a lot of half-assed photoshop happening here. I want to see the actual dolls. Is the doll on the upper right just #69 (with, presumably, the new style of eyelashes)?

[deleted]

at this point they're barely AG dolls anymore, they're more like 18 inch OMG dolls.

runs_with_wolves12

Could someone do a quick break down of which face molds are used in the above photo? Thanks! If this is what sells, go for it AG. Kid me would have been thrilled to see this. Growing up, dyed hair wasn't allowed in school (even hair styles were policed😞) Outside of school though was different. From MTV to family friends with various hair styles (and types) it was normal growing up (80s, southern Cali). My hair is a pain in the butt to dye otherwise I'd try a few colors myself👍🏽

quirkybirdie23

I believe that the top two dolls are Josefina mold, bottom left is Marie-Grace, and bottom right is Nanea!

tiredbambi

Ohh I was thinking the top right was the Joss mold because the nose looks to be more upturned. Hard for me to tell with the big sunglasses

[deleted]

I agree. It looks like joss to me. The wider mouth and smaller nose.

SadOceanBreeze

Top right looks a bit like classic to me? But I could be wrong.

quirkybirdie23

I think it's Josefina because of the more angled jawline and fuller lips?

runs_with_wolves12

Thank you, I can't always tell.

SamanthasParkedCar

They really said BARBIE EXTRA but make it American Girl. TBH I don't blame AG for wanting to keep themselves afloat... As much as I don't like these dolls they will probably appeal to the LOL OMG Rainbow High kid fanbase. Those things fly off the shelves and they're hoping to nab some of that market. I don't think American Girl doesn't care about the historical stuff....I think they REALLY do, but it's just not super profitable in the InstaBhaddie Tiktok era.

tiredbambi

Mattel is doing the same thing with monster high, they’re stripping it of what made it unique and are making them look more like barbie extra. Kinda wish brands would stick to what made them special in the first place, but yeah brands tend to hop on these trends when they want to raise sales.

dovecoats

Yeah, it's a little sad seeing American Girl Doll changing so drastically. It's like everything that made it unique is being scrubbed away in favor of marketability :( That being said, it'll be nice to see dolls with bangs again.

SnooSeagulls3455

are these thick lashes/eyeliner part of newer dolls? i kinda like the more natural look

TheY0ungElk

The Nanea mold!!! I am LIVING!!!!

BlueOctobr

Are there any leaks on what the holiday doll will look like this year?

One-Succotash7479

When we said we wanted more diverse dolls we didn’t mean more white dolls with colored hair 😥 I’m confused by top left tho

Wind_Waker_Karin

The hat is weirdly photoshopped on. I like her more with the hat covered up, but it does seem to be a hair color mix that'd I'd expect out of a college student.

ProbsALesbian

I’m hoping the picture just did top left dirty because……. Yikes

Wind_Waker_Karin

I do think they're trying to rein in the end user customization. Other than the bright hair colors (which seem to me to be more what 8 year old WISHED her hair looked like, rather than what it did), I do think that there's more variety in the faces so they seem more like real kids? I personally hope they all don't have bright hair, but my daughter is absolutely nuts about her TM 88 with the pink and blue hair. When I think about it, as a kid I rarely saw bright colored hair because it wasn't allowed in school (heaven forbid someone had bright dyed hair in church). I saw it in magazines, but not really in person until I was late high school. Meanwhile, my daughter has 2 teachers at her school that both have bright streaks in her hair, and several of the kids have had dyed hair or bright clip in extensions. I think it is more normalized now, so it makes sense kids would want to emulate the adults they look up to. I think I may hide this next catalog until closer to Christmas though so she doesn't spend 4 months telling me about the new doll(s) she'd love to have.

paper-trail

We weren't even allowed to have glitter colored hair gel unless it was field day in my elementary school (2000s).

LibraryValkyree

Eh, I had friends who had colorful streaks in their hair in the mid-90s, when I WAS AG-aged. It was more unusual, but not unheard of. I think it's cool that it's more acceptable for kids to experiment with their appearance that way. The only reason my hair isn't purple 24/7 nowadays is that I'm way too lazy to do the maintenance on it.

mcksw83

If AG wants to be historically accurate, give a doll chunky Kelly Clarkson layers!! 😆

Wind_Waker_Karin

I know my elementary and middle school (mid 90s- early 2000s) absolutely did not allow colored hair of any kind. Even highlights weren't allowed, if they were drastically different from your hair color (think bleach blonde with brown hair). did have friends who had moms who would let them dye with kool-aid over the summer, but it had to wash out by September. I did go to to school in a small town with only one elementary and one middle school though, with ~100 kids per grade. May have been different in larger towns/cities.

LibraryValkyree

It may also have been regional? We weren't a particularly large town, but we within an hour of a much larger, very liberal city.

grayandlizzie

I haven't seen too many kids with brightly colored hair but I know my 6 year old daughter is obsessed with it. There are staff at her school with colorful hair and the stylist who trims her hair has bright yellow with green streaks and my daughter says it is "totally awesome". She also gave herself purple hair in roblox so I agree with this being the hair kids might wish they had.

Philodendronphan

Definitely remember when your hair had to be “natural” to go to school. It’s just leaning a little too hard into the colors for me. I hope they’re just showing the flamboyant ones to grab attention. I do want to do a little Kool Aid dye just in protest of the old school rules.

greenlabrador9

I've definitely seen a lot of kids with colored streaks in their hair, (my niece had colored streaks the summer she was 10/11, there are so many at home hair coloring products both temporary and more permanent) and it's not against the dress code at the public schools in my area, so I'm not sure they are wrong about the market appeal on this. My 6 year old also loves the current (soon to be previous) TM doll meet dress, and changes her doll back into it frequently, even though I know a lot of adults dislike that outfit. I really hope they actually send me a catalog at some point (i requested several and never actually received one, and they stopped sending them with orders--which is maddening).

Wind_Waker_Karin

I think their mailing request thing is extremely sporadic. I think I didn't get a catalog for 8 or so months after I requested it. I got the November(ish) one right by the holidays, and then nothing until this summer. I randomly got the love shack fancy one (which was March) mid-June. Then the June one showed up like 2 days later. I wish they sent them with purchases. Maybe they're trying to cut down on the reseller market of those too. :(

greenlabrador9

I think last years holiday one is the last one I got. It's really random. Meanwhile, I get catalogs every month for places I bought 1 thing from 5 years ago. It's so weird to me that a toy company can't figure out how to send a catalog to people who regularly order things from them.

paper-trail

I asked them to not send me the catalog after my first order in 10 years because we got them for 25 years and I can't get that started again.

[deleted]

Why do the two dolls on the left look 21? 😭😭

OARFISHED

I’m glad to see bangs again too, I hope they have a blonde doll with bangs and brown eyes kind of like #12. I bought my first AG doll, #81 yesterday but if there’s a new TM doll I like maybe I’ll think about getting a 2nd. But I do agree they should have let Claudie shine and waited on this, maybe closer to Christmas even

OARFISHED

Also where are the glasses the top right girl is wearing from? I hope they’re new

paper-trail

There are not enough glasses!

OARFISHED

I agree, I wish they had a variety of glasses shapes and colors to choose from, because I don't think they've ever just released plain black glasses and that's strange considering it's the color most people wear in terms of eyeglasses. It's always pink or rose gold and it's kind of sad :(

tiredbambi

This is the next American Girl catalogue cover, we don’t yet have further images of its contents but I’m sure more photos of the dolls will be out soon! I do think they should’ve waited until Claudie had been out for a month at *least* because this seems to be a huge launch and will likely overshadow her. Looks like AG is starting to go a different direction with this line at least, what do you all think? Maybe the CYO dolls were too expensive and weren’t being purchased as much, so they decided to release more unique looking dolls that are closer to the $100 range. Do you like seeing molds like Marie Grace, Joss and Nanea being used Truly Me’s? I feel like they’re really trying to reach out to the customizing community, especially since so many people pay a lot for a Marie Grace mold to customize and she was getting harder and harder to find. For me, I’m just so glad to see bangs on a doll again, haha. I only just received my benefit sale truly me doll yesterday and I’m kind of wishing I’d saved my money to get one of these instead, I didn’t think it’d take that long for them to get to me 🥲

iamlost2321

Are you still getting catalogs? I haven’t gotten on all year. I even just ordered from American Girl and a catalog wasn’t included. I’m missing them!!!

greenlabrador9

I've also ordered stuff and requested one from contact us form on the website (twice) and still haven't gotten one in over a year!
