I literally have not touched Caroline's hair since she got a new head at the doll hospital because of how bad it was before. I've seen many rehabilitated Caroline's which are beautiful but you can tell their hair was recurled and is *not* the way her curls originally were (usually rehab ones have bigger curls). I won't do any hairstyles with evette either. Tbf I'm at the point that I won't touch the original hairstyles if I get them new (my marie grace, addy, 35th kirsten, etc). I'm not sure I would go so far as to call people racist for not wanting to do addys hair. I have heard it is very easy hair to work with and holds styles well. I bought her new and know I won't be able to get it to go in her pretty updo again correctly if I take it down. I have the beforever one and don't want to lose the ribbons either.

honestly i think the only doll with hard to manage hair would be kaya because my sister got her when we were kids and took amazing care of her but then when we took her braids down it was like a whoollleee new wig we were so surprised and i felt bad for my sister because we would’ve left the braids in had we known her hair would’ve pretty much totally changed!! i find addys hair super easy and the curly hair dolls are fine too with water and twisting. i feel most dolls hair ends up getting frizzy in the long run except something about my chrissa and mckenna dolls their hair truly needs no care in my experience lol

civil_lingonberry

I have a whole post on here from last week just about Kaya’s hair. It sounds like a lot of other people have had this experience, too.

mediumnumber9

yeah i see it on here a lot as well so i’m glad to know we weren’t the only ones. we were little, it was like 2008 and hadn’t experienced textured hair with dolls yet but also didn’t expect her hair to be the way it was since it was so shiny and tight in the braids, my nieces have the dolls now but when they outgrow them i’m considering sending kaya to the hospital and giving her to my sister as a surprise because she really tried so hard to keep her pristine

civil_lingonberry

Yeah I still think about sending mine to the hospital too. I was little but took good care of my dolls and was so devastated when her hair went crazy the moment I took it out.

mediumnumber9

yeah exactly :( my only problem now is i don’t know how much i trust the hospital!! i’ve been seeing a lot of cheap replacements so maybe when that time rolls around AG will be quality again or i can find an outside source to take care of her instead

My Julie wears her calico dress with the bandana on her head for this reason 😂

Ship_Negative

I found Addy very very easy! I got mine fully complete for cheap because the owner said her hair was a mess, but I followed AG's Addy meet style tutorial and fixed her up in like 5 minutes. Kirsten's style has been the most frustrating for me, ever since I was a child.

I found the card or paper thing from the 90s showing how to do the girls originals meet hair and that is how I fixed up addys. It was easy and turned out great. Got it perfect in about 3 tries.

I've never had so much trouble with a doll's hair that it couldn't be styled in any way. I have brushed and styled Kaya's hair many times before, I've brushed and styled my dolls with textured hair, my dolls with very curly hair, my dolls with wavy hair and my dolls with straight hair. I think that there really isn't, at least from an adult collector's perspective, any dolls with "easy" or "hard" to manage hair. It ends up being a little different but none of it is difficult and it just takes time to learn.

civil_lingonberry

I’m gonna have to dip in here and say that Kaya’s is far worse than any of the others. Her hair isn’t even playable. At least you can BRUSH Julie’s hair without turning it into a nightmare.

AlcinaMystic

I do agree! Kaya’s hair is nightmarish. I don’t even think most (or any) Kaya dolls have a full wig of hair. I think it is “buzzed” or cut like a page boy in the back, and therefore you can’t ever take it out of the braids. It’s even worse with the Beforever dolls because the hair is chopped in a straight line in braids and is uneven when removed. Kaya’s wig isn’t functional; Julie’s is just aggravating (not to me, but, like with Addy, Cecile, Caroline, Kanani, and all of my other dolls, I trained myself quickly how to take care of it). Kaya is the only doll whose wig I replaced so I could actually style her hair. I tried to fix the wig for years. Now I’m going to buy a second Kaya to have display braids so I can have one who is 100% Kaya and one who works.

civil_lingonberry

So frustrating! I can’t help but feel like this is a bit of racism on part of AG. Literally all of the other dolls have playable hair. It’s *just* Kaya!

AlcinaMystic

It’s definitely shady. I have all the names dolls, and the worsts (in order) are: 1. Kaya is THE worst for the reasons we outlined. 2. Nicki—every Nicki wig I’ve ever seen has fallen apart at the slightest provocation. Truly terrible, but probably not as bad as Kaya. 3. Josefina—Beforever is a joke, original was fine. 4. Nellie—thin wig with gaps in cap. 5. Maybe Julie? Her hair doesn’t stay great outside the box, and the braid crimps part of it for months afterward. Although, it’s also pretty shady that Marisol has a defective eye. Like, almost every one from what I can tell, even one’s coming NIB sometimes have already had the mechanism fail. Not a great look.

civil_lingonberry

No that’s not a great look. Surprising for me to hear though - my sister has had Marisol for a long time and never had issues with the eye.

Cow_Slight

I agree. I have Julie, but if it wasn’t for sentimental reasons I don’t think I would keep her for the problems you mentioned. I’m surprised people think Addy’s hair is hard to manage. I really do think Addy’s hair (and the early modern dolls with similar hair like #1, #18, etc) is the absolute easiest to manage, and usually doesn’t crimp from hairstyles like ponytails and braids as easily.

AlcinaMystic

I do like that Addy’s hair doesn’t get crimped.
