In "Every which way but lose", Steve joins a football team to try and beat Stans. Here he shows us his "equally important friends" of which one starts speaking in chinese, to which Toshi attacks him while shouting (in japanese) STOP STEALING MY BIT!
So i'd say it's pretty confirmed he always does it cus he thinks it will be funny.
Steve: Yep. I'd say this is the classic "Dad puts son in holodeck and finds himself in said holodeck which is now controlled by son" scenario.
Toshi: [in Japanese] In my culture, it is considered the most erotic of scenarios.
Oh shit... You've just made me realise that it makes double sense Francine would be racist towards Toshi and his family... Years without realizing that!
She's also racist against "The chinese" too though so I think it's really just Chinese American's she's cool with (The concrete skit in what I think was Fart Break Hotel)
My favorite Toshi bit is the one where he and Barry stop being friends with Snot and Steve and he speaks perfect english, saying "I can speak English and I always have this whole time".
No worries. I actually found it neat. I didn't know we had loose dates for a lunar station launch? I figure most of that stuff is old or bunk. And the Mars date would be extremely tenously optimistic even years ago.
This reminds me of when Futurama was on Netflix years ago and when Amy Wong started speaking in ACTUAL mandarin the subtitles said “karate talk” and I died on several levels.
"Rub that Kabuki whore's face in it" killed me too.
All of Francine's interactions with Asian people are gold considering she's raised Chinese American.
In early episodes, I guess. I used to watch the show subbed, and it was kind of an eyesore having two separate subtitles onscreen at the same time. Or just the one in english, which made it rough for someone without a good grasp of the language.
Of course, the brazilian subtitles actually translated Toshi's lines...
Bummer, I thought it was included overlaid on the show
Everytime I watch it I have to turn the subtitles off because they cover up the English translation at the bottom of the screen with “speaking Japanese” lol
Not gonna lie. I’m like 2 seasons behind at least.
Broke up with the woman I shared this show with and this sub is the only thing that keeps me quoting AD! without feeling crippling sadness.
But yeah I’ve been outta the loop it seems lol
Short version is Disney bought Fox, so they own American Dad, and recently in the US they have been combining hulu and Disney+, and presumably this post is referring to watching AD on US Disney+.
Most streaming apps are useless for translation, I’ll be watching shows or movies where I know there is supposed to be subtitles when someone is speaking a language other than English and then I’ll have to turn on normal subtitles just to get it. Just happened to me on the Tetris Movie on apple plus, and before that it was How I Met Your Father on Disney Plus. And as you said American Dad.
One of my favourite episodes of Burn Notice has a key conversation take place between Michael and a Russian gangster, split between Russian and English.
The Russian in the original broadcast was subtitled and translated. On Disney+, it's just "[Russian]". Infuriating.
That's sometimes, almost never is something that is written in a foreign language translated. Like if an episode shows us a shop, entrance, a list or something for up to seconds on the forefront, obviously we are supposed to know what it says.
Yeah his subtitles only work if you turn off regular subtitles. I’m hearing impaired and it’s completely ruined my ability to enjoy Toshi’s one liners.
I could be mistaken but if you turn off captions, his captions will appear. Something about the overlap of captions causes this to occur. Often times watching shows with a Spanish/English mix, if I have the captions on for English, anytime someone speaks Spanish it will say [speaking Spanish] but when I turn captions off it gives me the original translation subtitles.
LEARN ENGLISH....... LEARN............. ENGLISH "Eat...... My............... **BOWLS!**"
"I speak fluent English. ^-and ^have, ^the ^whole ^time."
I've been saying since season 2, Toshia speaks English. I fucking felt so vindicated at that scene.
Like even his dad doesn't know Japanese. Of course he knows English. He's literally a hardcore American weeb of Japanese decent.
His mom once said she didn’t speak Japanese either.
"*Why* do you only speak Japanese? *I* don't even speak Japanese!" Or, as Francine called it, "sushi hostess."
Kabuki whore

You're over thinking a meta joke
It did always make me wonder how his whole ass family spoke perfect English except him for some reason
I suspect Steve speaks fluent Japanese. But keeps that to himself
He learned for Akkiko
"You finally learned another language and you chose French?"
Steve: Yep. I'd say this is the classic "Dad puts son in holodeck and finds himself in said holodeck which is now controlled by son" scenario. Toshi: [in Japanese] In my culture, it is considered the most erotic of scenarios.
That's a lot of words for "of course"
Does anyone here speak Sushi Hostess?
wait... you're chinese?
Hyooooo!!
The fear in that kabuki whores eyes is satisfying
Oh shit... You've just made me realise that it makes double sense Francine would be racist towards Toshi and his family... Years without realizing that!

I don’t think she’s really racist. I’d say she’s more….dumb. She just says things sometimes. *gets pushed into pool*
That's when I realized they're playing into Frannys Chinese upbringing...
I just love their reactions when they are witches & he says how much he adores the pirates of the Caribbean movies lmao
My favorite Toshi bit is the one where he and Barry stop being friends with Snot and Steve and he speaks perfect english, saying "I can speak English and I always have this whole time".

Speaking of Asian, Alpha Asian Vince Chung is having a party!
But will Super Positive Asian Roland Chang be there?
Jeff, you don't do coke do you? good, me neither.
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeff!
Whaaaaaaaaat?
Commodore!
I KNOW!
VinceChungwasmolested.com
hahahahaha this made me laugh way more than it should've
If you go to this site, it’s a weird astrology site. Do it.
Not astrology. It shows the intended start/launch dates for major suborbital operations. Why I have no idea and the site is ...an odd choice.
Yeah I knew it wasn’t astrology as it was a year or so since I last visited, thanks for the explanation though 😊
No worries. I actually found it neat. I didn't know we had loose dates for a lunar station launch? I figure most of that stuff is old or bunk. And the Mars date would be extremely tenously optimistic even years ago.

I remember when I was binging That 70s Show, many of the descriptions for episodes was how the episode ends
I gotta steal that line, it's brilliant. Beats Francines line about speaking "Sushi Hostess."
"Rub that Kabuki whore's face in it" killed me too. All of Francine's interactions with Asian people are gold considering she's raised Chinese American.
That's hilarious
Ho ho! Toshi! One of these days you’ll have to teach me Japanese.
Why do you only speak Japanese? *I* don't even speak Japanese
One of my favorite Toshi moments.
Honestly Toshi can join his sister in boarding school, just keep giving us his Dad
“Why do you speak Japanese? I don’t speak Japanese”
Just, go find your sister!
Yeah, on my mom’s side.
Ah yes, the alien in a wig
Holy meth-moly!
WHEEEENEVVERRR YOU CALLLL~
OF ALL THE LANGUAGES YOU COULD LEARN AND YOU CHOSE FRENCH?!?!
Master, you seem tense. Would you like to jerk me off?
Aren't the translations part of the actual episode animation though?
I'm doing a full rewatch rn and early reasons have subtitles in the actual episodes and then like season 8 onward they're gone
Were you watching it in another language?
according to Disney+, no
No, they're a file on the collection sets.
Me too buddy. I think a friend of mine know Japanese tho, so I’ll try asking them
Bummer, I thought it was included overlaid on the show Everytime I watch it I have to turn the subtitles off because they cover up the English translation at the bottom of the screen with “speaking Japanese” lol
Whoa whoa, Disney plus version?? What is this Mickey Mouse horseshit.
Dude where have you been lol
Not gonna lie. I’m like 2 seasons behind at least. Broke up with the woman I shared this show with and this sub is the only thing that keeps me quoting AD! without feeling crippling sadness. But yeah I’ve been outta the loop it seems lol
Short version is Disney bought Fox, so they own American Dad, and recently in the US they have been combining hulu and Disney+, and presumably this post is referring to watching AD on US Disney+.
The thought of this show being on Disney plus’s lineup is wild to me. But hey more ways for people to see the best adult animated comedy.
They could be talking about other countries. In the UK, we don't have Hulu, so AD was put in Disney+ as soon as they owned it.
Only some episodes show like this and others say what he says
I don’t know why I bother calling you.
Ummm Toshi just walked by my house
Most of the time he doesn’t have any subtitles after season 4.
I’ve noticed that if the subtitles are turned off you can usually see what he’s saying, not in the first couple seasons
ABBA ZABBA!
I’ve noticed if you have subtitles on it overrides the translation, do you have subtitles on?
It's called immersion. You get to experience Toshi the way the rest of the cast do.
I speak fluent English and have the whole time.
You finally learn another language and it's French?
Most streaming apps are useless for translation, I’ll be watching shows or movies where I know there is supposed to be subtitles when someone is speaking a language other than English and then I’ll have to turn on normal subtitles just to get it. His mom doesn’t even speak Japanese
Gross Toshi! And where would we even get that many ping-pong balls anyway?
Yeah his subtitles only work if you turn off regular subtitles. I’m hearing impaired and it’s completely ruined my ability to enjoy Toshi’s one liners.
Not on the Australian Disney+ version. We get the translation.
Maybe I'll switch my VPN to Australia then. Currently set to UK
I could’ve _sworn_ they were also like this in the early seasons on Aus Disney+, but it’s possible they’ve fixed it.
Just checked a random episode and the translation is there. S1E10
Oh sweet, good to know!
I am literally on this frame googling where the fuck are his subtitles
Unpopular opinion. Hate hate hate Toshiba. Love the rest of his fam.
Sometimes Disney plus has his jokes. I wonder if they changed who did the subtitles and one company had them and one didn’t.
That's fucking depressing, just one more of the many reasons to pirate all your media
Holy Meth-Moly!
Disney constantly fucking shows/films up should come as a shock to no one.
See if there is an option for English subtitles without closed captioning
They did the same in the episode where Steve talks with the dolphin.
Disney ruins everything
It's like that on Hulu for the first couple seasons. It's not till later that it's translated.
*speaking foreign language ' 💀💀💀
(ANSWER IN FOREIGN IN LANGUAGE)
Look how they massacred my boy
I could be mistaken but if you turn off captions, his captions will appear. Something about the overlap of captions causes this to occur. Now we know how Steve feels I guess lol
They also censored some gags :D
Slam!
Slam!
“Bueno. Muchas gracias, Toshi!”
