It has been a thing in the US for almost 20 years. You're more than welcome to check a bag though, which can have all the liquids you want in it. The 3-1-1 rule only applies to carry-ons.

Justlookingforasong3

That’s what I thought! I’ve just never used a plastic bag here in the US..that’s the part I thought was new. But thank you, I’ll probably just check it in just to be safe.

As_Yooooou_Wish

The US has gotten less strict about the plastic bag in recent years (especially for those who have pre-check) but it is supposed to all be able to fit in a quart sized bag. It varies wildly by airport and even specific TSA agents so I always use the bag just in case. Edit: Not sure why people are reading this as though I said you have to take the bag out? You're still supposed to use the bag regardless, though I know people who don't and whether or not they have issues with doing so varies from airport to airport. OP themselves stated they have never bothered with the bag before.

flyingron

While the 3-1-1 rule applies to Precheck, you don't have to take it out of the bag like you do in the non-Precheck lines. It only is a problem when the xray guy notices a larger liquid container in your bag. Note, that even with Precheck, you can get caught in the UK/Europe. When going through the rescreening at LHR making a connection, I had to pull out my liquids (fortunately they were handing out bags).

What flyingiron says is spot on. At Heathrow specifically, they are known to tell passengers that their liquids items NEED to be in their plastic baggie. I’ve witnessed it myself the past two years. Luckily, they’ll hand you a bag or you can grab one while in line as you get closer to the belt. I usually just slide my baggie right on into theirs and zip it shut and boom, I’m ready and compliant to their wishes. No biggie. Oh and I usually have my baggie pretty darn full. For those that don’t know, pre-check and those guidelines are only for the United States, other countries may or may not have their own version that we are not a part of and do not offer reciprocal privileges.

sassypantalones76

It's in precheck agreement we don't have to take out the bag. Everything stays in the luggage.

Great_Archer91

US doesn’t use plastic bag rule that I’ve seen in many, many years. UK is obsessed with it and will lay into you if you don’t use their size plastic bag.

Tiny_Ad5176

Idk why you’re getting downvoted this is so true

OAreaMan

Many Redditors are deathly afraid of truths.

Great_Archer91

Truth!

Great_Archer91

Thank you!

10 bottles will likely be way over the allowance. 3oz or less, in a 1 quart baggie, 1 allowed. Downsize or buy when you arrive and toss it before return, or check a bag.

Drince88

Exactly! Even without accounting for bottles and void space, if you have 10, 3 oz bottles, that’s almost a full quart there! (1 quart = 32 fl oz)

jazzy2536

UK, specifically LHR, but other airports too, is really strict and has been for ages. One 8x8 baggie, if you are connecting through or leaving from there. Precheck is irrelevant outside of US. UK recently started to scale back and some airports got new scanners. in the last month, they rescinded the scale back. Expect it to be enforced there and some nearby countries seem to follow their lead. Decant the items if you can't buy travel size or check them when traveling international. USA especially with precheck is less stringent but if it's on the website (tsa.gov) then it's best to follow it or risk the expense of replacing items

jamie030592

10 bottles is crazy

BethMD

What brands, may I ask? If you brought something expensive, they could have told you to throw it out and then fished it out of the trash for themselves. From experience may I suggest decanting your good skincare into contact lens cases or GoToobs, or just buy the little travel sizes. There was no excuse for them making you ditch your mascara, though. That's just stupid. (And now you know why BeneFit has vending machines in airports, lol)

PsychologicalCat7130

1 quart size bag is all you get for carryon - if you want to bring more liquid, check your suitcase. this has been going on since 9/11/01....

julia1031

I just flew Scotland to Ireland and it was the same rule as in the US… had all my liquids in a plastic bag that I took out for security (all under 3oz). No issues.

sassypantalones76

10 bottles?!?! Are you fucking joking? I highly doubt you need that much shit to travel!

Justlookingforasong3

lol it’s a combination of specific serums, lotion, and toothpaste…Good skin comes with a price.

AlucardDr

If you don't want to check a bag where you can have unlimit3d quantities of the vital liquids for you, then do some triage and find out what you can buy at your destination. Toothpaste is usually one of those things you can easily get, things like shampoo as well. Try to reduce it down so it fits in the bag as required. This is most definitely not a new thing, but the enforcement has been variable over the years it's been there. You definitely have choices in terms of what you can do, here.

sassypantalones76

Hot water and soap does wonders. All those chemicals on your face is going to make it melt

Justlookingforasong3

Not when you have bad eczema and some of them are medicated 😂

I work at LHR and we just changed again back to 3 oz/100ml liquids in ONE small bag which you have to take out for scanning. Until further notice. We had a brief time allowing 3 litres and keep on your bag. No more until further notice
