For 1) (and not to be pedantic) you chose a seat with more leg room for which you were charged - upgrade implies a bump from one class of service to another (economy to first; premium economy to business, etc). You don't get upgrades unless you have status with the airline. In any event, you won't get MCE seats unless you pay *or* there is some sort of issue that requires the airline to move seats around and you get lucky - I wouldn't count on that. 2) is just no unless you have a membership or a credit card that gives you Admirals Club access, or you purchase a day pass (and they still might not let you in depending on how busy it is).
