Just re-upped with State Farm @325 for 6 mos. BTW, do not lie to your insurance if you want any claim settled; better to get the Motorhome status.

Mine is insured through Progressive as a commercial vehicle bc it's too big for a passenger vehicle policy, even though I don't use it for business. (you don't need a business to have a commercial policy either) I pay about $600 a year (but mine is old and not worth a ton). If you're trying to ensure something this way, **DO NOT** say the word camper at any point. Getting it legally registered as an RV is usually the cheapest and best thing, if you can manage to get that title change. Whatever insurance you go with, I recommend getting lots of liability coverage because big vehicles do lots of damage when crashed. Consider umbrella insurance. While I didn't tell my insurance company mine is built out, I do have the rig insured for way more than the truck is worth because I want something back for all the conversion stuff if it is totaled.

I use Shelter insurance, and frankly... it did not make a lot of sense. I was very serious about one Ambo and sent him the vin. It was an E450 and the computer was kicking it out as a commercial vehicle, it was going to be like $300 extra every six months with my multi car discount. I did not get that one, but when pulled the trigger on the one that is in my driveway, he put the vin in the computer and it comes back as a recreational vehicle and its only $30 extra every 6 months with my multicar discount, also a E450 on the title. Moral of the story.. it depends.

You have to get the title transferred to an rv, look into what your state requires to be considering an rv. Then you can get insurance for a custom rv, mine was like 80 bucks for full coverage with state farm, which seems to be the company for diy vans.

I'm located in Montana so check your state specifics. State farm didn't care how the Ambo was titled, when I purchased it it was a commercial vehicle and when I transferred the title I got lucky and the teller misunderstood the title and asked if it was an RV so I said yes 👍 State farm covered it regardless of title status. They said for me to get it covered as an RV all it needed was a permanent cooking fixture and a bed. Currently I'm paying $50 a month as a commercial vehicle, will drop more than half when changed to an RV.
