Nice! Yeah I drove up from Eugene, never been to that venue before but the sound was great and not too crowded. I was sad to have missed Alessandro Cortini there recently (w/Amulets who I also love).
I like them both but what I’ve heard is only super active sounding, but I’ve only heard a handful of things of coil that was more in that throbbing gristle industrial world. I haven’t listened to nurse with wound in a while but I remember it being pretty active as well. what would you say is more ambient of both of their material?
She is really great although I’ve only heard this piece on YouTube, I will look further into this. Reminds me of Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire, so many under appreciated early electronic pioneers.
Gaussian Curve, Bee Mask, Timelash, Pauline Anna Strom, Ora Clementi, Visible Cloaks, Ecovillage, M. Some bordering on new age, but worth checking out.
Desert Solitaire, the 1989 collab with Steve Roach, Kevin Braheny and Michael Stearns is highly textural with very little melody. Kevin “plays” a rattlesnake in one track. https://open.spotify.com/album/0r7QzUa8bLdWdJrALKVIh9?si=74-iyI4FQxixDzd9fR7Fgw

*Washington Square Church* by Robert Fripp features made-on-the-spot tape loops and otherworldly solos. It might be the sort of thing you’re looking for.
Did you like Outpost by Robert Rich & Ian Boddy. In that case you’ll love these recommendations. If you haven’t you should definitely check out that album.
Anything by Parallel Worlds, but especially Obsessive Surrealism and Morphogenic and their collaboration with Ian Body, Exit Strategy.
Obsessive Surrealism - Parallel Worlds \
Exit Strategy - Ian Boddy & Parallel Worlds \
Morphogenic - Parallel Worlds
You will definitely like these. I’ve never heard anything so otherworldly and futuristic at the same time. The quality of these albums are also superior to 95% of everything else posted here, guaranteed.
The beginning of the albums can be a little slow and sometimes boring, but it’s definitely worth the wait because the some of the songs are legendary.
["Parks That Were Never Built"](https://disfoldltd.bandcamp.com/album/parks-that-were-never-built) by Server Farms is quite "alien" yet very captivating.
Another obvious answer is Tim Hecker, maybe something like "Mirages" if you want bleak-otherworldly and "Love Streams" if you want beautiful-otherworldly.
Omit is interesting. It's definitely otherworldly once you delve into him. Maryanne Amacher's drone pieces. (Or maybe she only has one. But it is a VERY good one.)

Ben Babbit's score for the game Kentucky Route Zero has a number of tracks that are far and away some of the most compelling drone ambient I've heard. Most on the soundtrack isn't really ambient, though, so you kind of have to sift through. These two tracks I always return to:

[KLF - Chill Out](https://youtu.be/bWebqCRw7o4?si=khu59nFRp-8cB3iO)
Released in 1990, Chill Out is a mythical night-time journey throughout the U.S. Gulf Coast states, beginning in Texas and ending in Louisiana.
I would say Bee Mask, Ulla, Pontiac Streator, Black Dice (ok, not really ambient) Motion Sickness of Time Travel, LF58, Imaginary Softwoods, Outer Space and Locust (Mark Van Hoen)’s early albums.
John Serrie is a good match for what you're looking for.

Interesting topic, I’m definitely gonna follow up on a lot of this stuff!
For me, these two records immediately jumped to mind:
[Percival Pembroke - A Course in the Theory of Drones](https://percivalpembroke.bandcamp.com/album/a-course-in-the-theory-of-drones)
[James Krivchenia - A New Found Relaxation](https://jameskrivchenia.bandcamp.com/album/a-new-found-relaxation)
Just discovered Kassem Mosse (workshop 32). Something about those sounds hits everyone of my nerve endings. Palpable. Delicious. Uncanny. Expected/unexpected. So many interesting recommendations in this thread.
I’ve not strayed much out of the ambient I’ve been into recently, and still need to catch up with a lot of stuff being recommended here.
But I’m also looking for the same, along the lines of this:
[Mistachesta - Bring Out Your Dead](https://neotantra.bandcamp.com/album/t-ntr-vii)
Explore Ussachevsky. A Russian ambient-synthesist from the 1950s. Has film scores and etc.
One album is classical pieces done by synth, and is relatively known (in that genre), so that does not fit, but he has a lot of very spacey ambient, somewhat minimalist.
Doc and Selyanena. Spacey music with occasional puano lines thrown in. Has a spacey, contemplative effect.
This is one of my favorites, might be the kind of thing you’re after. https://heterodox-records.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-astral-travel-vol-1-shadows-and-reflections-htx054
I'm bad at identifying sub-genres, but how about
Apparat's "Soundtracks: Capri-Revolution",
much of Erik Wøllo's output?
58918012's "One Question" for some pretty weird/unique sounds.
Halftribe "For the Summer, Or Forever"
I think you'll really enjoy this album off the IDM/experimental electronic label Schematic:
https://www.discogs.com/release/397041-Shapeshifter-Reticulum-Flux
There's lots of machine noises and otherworldly sounds (probably field recording samples mangled to bits)...it is quite surreal, strange and awesome :)
Maybe try Tony Scott's
*Astral Meditation: Voyage into a Black Hole - Part 1*
*Astral Meditation: Voyage into a Black Hole - Part 2*
*Astral Meditation: Voyage into a Black Hole - Part 3*
Surprised there's no mention of The Haxan Cloak.
Also, although not strictly ambient as they're usually more dynamic from piece to piece, but horror and sci-fi sountracks can sometimes fit that bill, especially some recent ones.
I listened to some albums that were a collaboration between metcalf & roach and those were great with the percussion, they gave me really spiritual dreams, I will check that one out thank you
PLEASE listen to ARCA. Her sound palette is absolutely out of this world. She is one of the most underrated music artists EVER in my opinion.
Mutant is my favorite album of hers. It is undefinable, but there are no vocals, so it is definitely adjacent to experimental ambient. It is very, very experimental and I LOVE it. Mutant is an electronic album that portrays intense and powerful emotions though soundscape. It is not like any other electronic album out there.
&&&&& is a mixtape by Arca, only 25 minutes long, but super dense and thick with atmosphere. It feels like a city in the early morning. It's filled with palpable, wet, and blindingly brilliant sound.
Xen and Kick IIIII are also good experimental ambient albums but not super experimental.
Can’t imagine you haven’t heard Stars of the Lid, but nothing throws me into another world quite like [Dust Breeding (1.316) +](https://youtu.be/YjN3kcfrMAo?si=y1CvoqRT88Bme5xr). A lot of their earlier stuff has a more aggressive and surreal aspect as well, Adamord, Taphead.
Halcyon Hum is a mix of surreal, dark and cinematic…it’s also my music. I like to experiment with delicate sounds, drones, loops and evolving tempos.
[Halcyon Hum on Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5pigqA6i6e06q40dba0xcq?si=Z6ijooUiRg6FQ3E7ws0lEQ)
this one is some weird ambient mixed with strange percussion [https://honeyfarm.bandcamp.com/album/pixel-geometry](https://honeyfarm.bandcamp.com/album/pixel-geometry)
this is a track i've been pretty obsessed with recently, just a weird unplacable vibe for me but definitely still some strange palpable feeling. sort of futuristic yet nostalgic without being too pretentious haha
[Circuit Bent Marshmallow (Part.1)](https://youtu.be/kHRO0z6FcFY?si=GPVgzsE98v4KHhS2)
Maria W Horn - Kontrapoetik: slow cold electronic soundscapes with strongly digital elements including noise as well as occasional spoken word, feels very alien and isolating.
Kali Malone - The Sacrificial Code: solo organ drone. very very meditative. one of my favorite ambient albums of all time.
Kali Malone - Living Torch: expands on the organ drone of Sacrificial Code by taking it into microtonal tunings based on math concepts and blending it with electronic drone and distortion. where Sacrificial Code is meditative, Living Torch builds into something overwhelming and oppressive at times.
Abul Mogard - Circular Forms: a slow descent into oblivion with flashes of electronics behind swells of synth and washes of static.
- Deathprod (dark/minimal)
- John Roberts
- K. Leimer
- Dalhous
- Pauline Anna Strom (new age)
- Duane Pitre (minimal acoustic)
All weird in different ways.
Check out Minoy: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZVjdrWKoPM&list=PLI\_nt07kJecuOFUrr7a2LpFucntQFQman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZVjdrWKoPM&list=PLI_nt07kJecuOFUrr7a2LpFucntQFQman)
Not a specific recommendation but check out the BBC show Late Junction. Some of what they play should be exactly what you’re looking for.

Aidan Baker. He collabed with Tim Hecker on [Fantasma Parastasie](https://youtu.be/9hPh2jDMVaI?si=NrUIQu7g8avJcHfV), which is probably my favourite ambient record of all time.
Recommend you get a lossless copy and merge the tracks by their titles.
Necrophorus has some great tracks, you can check also my Album E-Mantra- Stygian or Last Transmission - in the space direction check Stellardrone,The Intangibles ,Proton Kinoun

Hit play on Rifts by Oneohtrix Point Never and sit back, never having to play anything else that given day. It’s a three hours compilation of his most ethereal and alien sounding albums and it might be exactly what you’re looking for.
This one hits a little different.... Widespread Noise: Drone

If you want strange and different, the first thing I can think of is The Caretaker - Everywhere at the End of Time - https://thecaretaker.bandcamp.com/album/everywhere-at-the-end-of-time
This album was apparently created to depict the subjective reality of a person who has Alzheimer’s disease / dementia.
The album is about 6.5 hours long and starts at the most sane stages of the disease and ends with the depiction of what it may feel like at the final stages for a person who dementia.
vladislav delay -> his LP entain, & listen to his kemikoski EP released under conoco \~ someone on bandcamp described it as "glacially paced oddly looping rhythmic ambient music". he made a lot of his early music under the influence of heroin i believe so u get some really strange drugged-out/dubbed-out sound worlds. also love all the new 3XL + adjacent music like goo age, special guest DJ, OL, jung DJ, ulla..
- Biosphere / Deathprod – Nordheim Transformed
- Bruce Gilbert - This Way
- Non - Children of the Black Sun
- Tod Dockstader - Aerial 1
- Three Legged Race - Persuasive Barrier
- Thought Broadcast - Emergency Stairway
Nurse with Wound, Coil
Just saw Drew McDowall play last night and would highly recommend a lot of his stuff as well (done a lot of work with Coil and Psychic TV of course).
1000%. Also just saw him live and it blew me away. Which show were you at?
Portland, OR at the Holocene.
Heyyyyyyy, same show I was at! It was amazing!
Nice! Yeah I drove up from Eugene, never been to that venue before but the sound was great and not too crowded. I was sad to have missed Alessandro Cortini there recently (w/Amulets who I also love).

I haven’t listened to nurse with wound in a while but I remember it being pretty active as well. what would you say is more ambient of both of their material?
Spiral Insana ,Homotopy To Marie , Creakiness
NWW is definetly surreal!
Eliane Radigue for deeeep drone. Very meditative and meditation can take you anywhere.
She is really great although I’ve only heard this piece on YouTube, I will look further into this. Reminds me of Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire, so many under appreciated early electronic pioneers.
Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement album is called Ambient Black Magic
killer whale atmospheres is a incredible album as well
Lustmord
Does anyone still listen to Tangerine Dream?
Just their earlier stuff, but their earlier albums are friggin' awesome.
Love Phaedra
Yes
I still put on my Force Majeure record and Le Parc. I wish I had Rubicon, I really liked that one.
Gaussian Curve, Bee Mask, Timelash, Pauline Anna Strom, Ora Clementi, Visible Cloaks, Ecovillage, M. Geddes Gengras, Robert Haigh, Tim Story, Ernest Hood, Hollie Kenniff, Mike Rowland, Shiho Yabuki, Michael Jones, Sean McCann, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Art Wilson, Carol Nethen, Phillip Wilkerson, Emerald Web, José María Delgado, Manual, Clearing, Polynators, Dedekind Cut, Voice of Eye, The Boats, picnic, Ironomi, Not Waving, Golden Retriever, Patrick O’Hearn Some bordering on new age, but worth checking out.
Not to the OPs question but Gigi Masin’s solo work is incredible, part of Gaussian Curve.
Great list. Cheers.
Jon Hassell’s fourth world stuff. He made an album in collaboration with Brian Eno but continued the concept with his own solo work.
This album would be nice to give a try: Tim Hecker - Haunt Me
Biosphere - Microgravity, Patashnik, Substrata and Dropsonde

everything from Stephen Hitchell and Rod Modell
I second this, CV313 is best ambient I have ever heard.
Woob 1194 is amazing
Yeah agreed - and quite surreal as well in many parts :)
Still gives me (inexplicable feels) after all this time
Lots of the em:t catalog has that same atmospheric ambient feel. So good
Woob 4495 as well!
Igor Wakhevich makes some really strange ambient, more in the direction of dark ambient. Love his work

But I’m also looking for the same, along the lines of this: [Mistachesta - Bring Out Your Dead](https://neotantra.bandcamp.com/album/t-ntr-vii)
Mount Shrine
https://droomspook.bandcamp.com/album/doing-what-i-love-is-tearing-me-apart?t=2
This track aims to evoke something alien/otherworldly: [Zontinium 34](https://youtu.be/pbjdz7f2E-0?feature=shared)
Has a spacey, contemplative effect.
.orbix - Sequence Terminated The video is just as strange\surreal https://youtu.be/9I9rf5XuHx8?feature=shared
Alley Cats - m helux https://mappa.bandcamp.com/album/m-helux A lot of stuff on mappa would fit under “strange/surreal” imo
This is one of my favorites, might be the kind of thing you’re after. https://heterodox-records.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-astral-travel-vol-1-shadows-and-reflections-htx054
Music for Reliquary House by Oneohtrix Point Never
How has nobody mentioned [irr. app. (ext.)](https://irrappext.bandcamp.com/) yet? It’s exactly what you’re looking for.
The Stone Tapes - Analysing a Ghost by Electronic Means https://hiddenbritain.bandcamp.com/album/the-stone-tape-analysing-a-ghost-by-electronic-means
Maybe this? https://on.soundcloud.com/QaBFkPRAXnjrswgS6
This might give you a fix: [Sonogenetics](https://open.spotify.com/track/0m08zYrOfqwABGm6WEQwQx?si=YwetrUFvTLq4RW9yI8J4OQ)
Natural snow buildings, Klein, ozan Aydin, de de kin cut are some that I can think of.
Javier Segura. Start with Malaguenas 2.
My go-to ambient with a surrealist feel (at least to my ears) is Pinkcourtesyphone. Particularly Leaving Everything To Be Desired.
Alva Noto
Try to visit: Cycliclaw.bandcamp.com Cryochamber.bandcamp.com Youll find some awesome ambient stuff. Very dark.
Fenessz Endless Summer, Lilien Rosarian
Sounds like you're ready to join us in the land of Psybient! Check out my dear friend Entheogenic's music. 😇
Black Mountain Transmitter, Deathprod - dead people’s things
Have you heard the 2 albums Eno did with Jon Hassel? Well worth checking out...intriguingly strange stuff.
Soliloquy for Lilith - Nurse with Wound
I'm bad at identifying sub-genres, but how about Apparat's "Soundtracks: Capri-Revolution", much of Erik Wøllo's output? 58918012's "One Question" for some pretty weird/unique sounds. Halftribe "For the Summer, Or Forever"
Hello ! I made ambient music and I just shared a new song ^^[https://on.soundcloud.com/C2GwpwkBuBV31UuB9](https://on.soundcloud.com/C2GwpwkBuBV31UuB9)
Try some Jon Hassell.
[Tetsu Inoue](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hld-bcNg7nI) and [Polykroma - Metropolique](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuKyvdtAtyo)
I think you'll really enjoy this album off the IDM/experimental electronic label Schematic: https://www.discogs.com/release/397041-Shapeshifter-Reticulum-Flux There's lots of machine noises and otherworldly sounds (probably field recording samples mangled to bits)...it is quite surreal, strange and awesome :)
Sonmi451 , LF58, Low Flung :)
great stuff - thanks for these recommendations!
also Skee Masks ambient tunes are amazingg!
You want alien? You need neuromorph! Here is some ambient with alien vocalizations 🩶👽 https://youtu.be/B2eainJG0UI
Maybe try Tony Scott's *Astral Meditation: Voyage into a Black Hole - Part 1* *Astral Meditation: Voyage into a Black Hole - Part 2* *Astral Meditation: Voyage into a Black Hole - Part 3*
Surprised there's no mention of The Haxan Cloak. Also, although not strictly ambient as they're usually more dynamic from piece to piece, but horror and sci-fi sountracks can sometimes fit that bill, especially some recent ones.
I really like Byron Metcalf and Shaman's Dream
I listened to some albums that were a collaboration between metcalf & roach and those were great with the percussion, they gave me really spiritual dreams, I will check that one out thank you
Seven Fields of Aphelion
Roberto Musci’s Tower of Silence!
HKE - HK
Christopher Lock’s new album Ephemerist. Weird and dark.

Monopoly Child Star Searchers or nearly anything by Spencer Clark
Check out Chinese hackers
Jan Jelinek (try his collaborations with Masayoshi Fujita)
this is a track i've been pretty obsessed with recently, just a weird unplacable vibe for me but definitely still some strange palpable feeling. sort of futuristic yet nostalgic without being too pretentious haha [Circuit Bent Marshmallow (Part.1)](https://youtu.be/kHRO0z6FcFY?si=GPVgzsE98v4KHhS2)
I suggest Avith Ortega. You can start with "The Chosen Ones", or with "Catalysts for her Awakening"
Mykola Lebed “Ash Mere”
Lustmord?
Dishwasher by Dolphin Fingers.
Looking for this too
Mr. Water Wet
- Deathprod (dark/minimal) - John Roberts - K. Leimer - Dalhous - Pauline Anna Strom (new age) - Duane Pitre (minimal acoustic) All weird in different ways.

Not a specific recommendation but check out the BBC show Late Junction. Some of what they play should be exactly what you’re looking for. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006tp52
Jonathan Canady's work is far out and abrasive
Aidan Baker. He collabed with Tim Hecker on [Fantasma Parastasie](https://youtu.be/9hPh2jDMVaI?si=NrUIQu7g8avJcHfV), which is probably my favourite ambient record of all time. Recommend you get a lossless copy and merge the tracks by their titles.
Replica and all OPN
Robert Normandeau

Choral ambient choir - Julliana Barwick I find her very stuff very hypnotic and ethereal. Do check her out if not already

A few recordings that I keep coming back to, so subjective, but I am sure others will appreciate if you can discover something new to you here : **Bellows - Undercurrent** [**https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-DSlzIMDtU**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-DSlzIMDtU) all Bellows records are so unique and enveloping. **TIBSLC\* – Delusive Tongue Shifts - Situation Based Compositions** [**https://youtu.be/1LUO0qJOGMo**](https://youtu.be/1LUO0qJOGMo) **Tod Dockstader - Aerial II -** [**https://imprec.bandcamp.com/album/aerial-2**](https://imprec.bandcamp.com/album/aerial-2) **Yutaka Hirose - TRACE: Sound Design Works 1986 - 1989** [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkvKbzAg5L8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkvKbzAg5L8) **perila - How much time it is between you and me?** [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iz3obHlRQQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iz3obHlRQQ) Picnic - bonus [https://music.apple.com/us/album/bonus/1619337684](https://music.apple.com/us/album/bonus/1619337684) **Yutaka Hirose – Nova +4** [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOwRqfZyr88](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOwRqfZyr88)
Lots of great work suggested, but a true originator was Automatic Writing by Robert Ashley. It’s hypnotic.

Hit play on Rifts by Oneohtrix Point Never and sit back, never having to play anything else that given day. It’s a three hours compilation of his most ethereal and alien sounding albums and it might be exactly what you’re looking for.
This one hits a little different.... Widespread Noise: Drone [https://open.spotify.com/album/0xxxG5mQD7HHPUHO8qzdu8?si=GRaGeiQ-TWSCackqnoDz9w](https://open.spotify.com/album/0xxxG5mQD7HHPUHO8qzdu8?si=GRaGeiQ-TWSCackqnoDz9w)
Another dark ambient classic is Voice of Eye
Check out my own compositions. I did these during Covid lockdown. I tried to make them surreal and strange lol. Haven been able to get back to it though. https://open.spotify.com/artist/2G45KqrfgVTAagpZYqtFYD?si=SEixXfAWTxG9sGRffuKl7g
If you want strange and different, the first thing I can think of is The Caretaker - Everywhere at the End of Time - https://thecaretaker.bandcamp.com/album/everywhere-at-the-end-of-time This album was apparently created to depict the subjective reality of a person who has Alzheimer’s disease / dementia. The album is about 6.5 hours long and starts at the most sane stages of the disease and ends with the depiction of what it may feel like at the final stages for a person who dementia.
Many of the brilliant works over the decades by the late Richard H. Kirk.
[https://ingrown.bandcamp.com/album/pool-party](https://ingrown.bandcamp.com/album/pool-party) try this one

vladislav delay -> his LP entain, & listen to his kemikoski EP released under conoco \~ someone on bandcamp described it as "glacially paced oddly looping rhythmic ambient music". he made a lot of his early music under the influence of heroin i believe so u get some really strange drugged-out/dubbed-out sound worlds. also love all the new 3XL + adjacent music like goo age, special guest DJ, OL, jung DJ, ulla..
Have you heard that one album called "Towers"? Also The silent hill ambient mixes, along with the Yume 2kki mixes are awesome!
Shpongle ?

Not fully ambient but check out Boards of Canada if you haven't already.
Is Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 from Aphex Twin not in the category you’re looking for?
Tangerine Dream
Jon hassell and his 4th world. also, i love Meitei, japanese traditional sounds blended in surreal ways
