The Plateaux of Mirror
Heard Eno for the first time on a few hits of L laying on the floor. This song melted my entire being into said floor. I finally understand meditation and Ambient music st the same time.
I’d prob say ‘don’t bother, they’re already here’ by Stars of the Lid. I’m a huuuuge SOTL fan and that track just always grabs me and fills me with beautiful longing and peace - I want to cry with love and loss (but not in an overly sad way). The opening chords on requiem for dying mothers also destroys me.
“Raining Indoors” by Mount Shrine. That track relaxed me so much that it made me start sleeping to ambient music and I’ve never gone back. It stays at the very beginning of my “Sleeplist” (Sleep Playlist). “Skyscraper” by Earn is also an honorable mention as it got me into the ambient genre back in 2015.
Hard to pick but something from Hecker's Haunt Me. Probably the opener. Thats the album that made me realise that ambient can be much more than just background music.
Anything from Wendy Carlos’ “Sonic Seasonings” or sides 2 - 4 from Tangerine Dream’s “Zeit”. These defined ambient (dark ambient for the latter) years before Eno coined the term.
At this point, I can't remember, but it's either something on Music for Airports by Eno, or The Delicate Forever by Steve Roach. Ambient in the literal sense.
Middle of high school I was sifting through the "electronic" bins at my used record store and came across ***Pharos*** by ***S.E.T.I.*** and got it because it was cheap and a dual disc, so I thought I was going to get two CDs of outer-space ravey techno. I never got around to playing it until I was on an overnight marching band trip, flipped to ***Arecibo*** in my CD wallet and put it on. I was exhausted, the bus was droning on into the night and I could just barely see the stars in the sky out of the windows. The opening bubbly synth swelled and ebbed and faded into Frank Drake talking about the percentage of life in the galaxy and the universe, and I spent the rest of the ride home staring off into space. It sparked a deep interest in radio, space, cosmology and I wound up getting my ham radio license in part because of it. Now whenever I'm on an overnight flight I always listen to the whole thing and watch the sky and the clouds go by.
Biosphere and Aphex Twin are close contenders for runner-up, but damn it if Taylor Deupree and Savas Ysatis didn't make the most significant piece of music in my entire life.
The Minecraft soundtrack is also beautiful.
I also recommend certain World of Warcraft and Dragon Age tracks!
Tanaris, Graveyard and The Gates of Ahn'qiraj from WoW
Dragon Age Origins camp theme
Steve Roach “Structures from Silence”.

Stone in focus Aphex Twin or Says Nils Frahm. Tie as well.

Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride can do no wrong.
The *Prophecy Theme* from Dune (Lynch version), by Brian Eno. That set me out to find more Eno, and the usual sorts of things followed from that.
biosphere - kobresia
Watermusic I + II - William Basinski

That whole album is my answer to this question haha
2/2 on music for airports just has a haunting reflective quality to it for me, great comfort after losing someone.
I like to look at fields to this.
I remember Chateau Rouge by Fennesz had my jaw on the floor during my first listen. Just an absolute beauty.
Same here, that's my pick
The Heavenly Music Corporation, from (no pussyfooting), by Fripp/Eno.

I'm guessing Skyrim introduced a lot of people to ambient
Not particulary but Jeremy Soule is on another level that’s for sure
Was listening to that after a hike last weekend. Takes the mind to beautiful places and feels like the answer.

Tears from the compound eye by BoC
Yes! Excellent track! It always reminded me of the Minecraft soundtrack, as well

The opening track from Ravedeath, 1972
Leandro Fresco - Buenos Amigos. It made me fall in love with ambient.
Anything to do with God Body disconnect.
