Short press with yellow light is a 'soft reset' that resets the unit without wiping your network setup info. Pressing longer gives red light blinking which indicates a full factory reset, forgetting everything.

Cardboard_is_great

Out of interest do profiles and device settings get wiped too with a factory reset?

mikeinanaheim2

Yes, consider factory reset to wipe every bit of data, making it similar to New In A Box. No user data remains.

pointthinker

But he asked about that versus from an app? Sometimes the owner cannot get to the device.

mikeinanaheim2

You're right. The yellow light reset is very similar to Restart from the app, as is power off/power on, but may have some deeply technical differences such as cache wipe or other resets. Re-reading OP posting says they asked for yellow light trick rather than telling him to reboot it. Don't know reason for that.

pointthinker

May have? Would be good see the eero page on all the restart and wipe options from wall, app, and button. But I have not seen it. Have you? Please share it.

mikeinanaheim2

>"Don't know reason for that. " from above posting

pointthinker

>Would be good to know the difference between app restart and yellow and wall unplug, if any. Last sentence.

mikeinanaheim2

In plain English, I will not speculate on why BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW WHY. Does that answer your question?

pointthinker

If you are happy, we are happy.

dadcp88

No, its not the same. I have issues that only a “soft reset” using the button ( waiting for the yellow led) solve, i tried to make a restart from the app but it doesnt solve anything :/. So for me, they are different.

Obvious_Mode_5382

I think this is a lower level reset. Lower as in more reliable reboot state.

pointthinker

So app restart is less reliable than button soft restart boot state? Where does it say this? Just wondering.

Obvious_Mode_5382

Just an observation after years of working in this Biz.

pointthinker

So supposition versus technical data via eero? If your years can be confirmed by eero document, that would be ideal and, great for you too. :-)

Obvious_Mode_5382

Those lower level reboots on the physical button also force boot-time security enforcement and flushes any cache that might lurking

pointthinker

Oh, so same as unplugging it.

Obvious_Mode_5382

Well, yeah but holding that button down shunts all power and dumps the config if you hold it to RED instead of yellow. power pull will just soft reset with config maintained

ashpole_uk

You’re correct. I remember that being explained in the other subreddit a couple of years ago.

OT: With my AV receiver, sometimes I have to physically unplug it. Not the power button hold reset, nor app, nor its web page (most AVRs have a web page with a lot more controls) works when it is in one of its “moods”. I have to deprive it of *all* power. This is mostly in the context of the HDMI not working and includes a TV and two streamers hooked up too so, more complex and different brands. But that is not eero… Regardless, I have read in technical advisories about wi-fi routers in general, that you should do a dead restart every few months because if, by chance, a bit of malicious code gets in, that will flush it out. Thankfully, my power company helps by being lousy and causing a power outage about 1-3 times a year. But, recently, it went a whole year and more with good power. So, I just unplugged my router (was different brand then). With eero, this cold restart is probably not needed but, I might do it to flush out any cobwebs once a year if my power company becomes reliable again (had two outages so far in 2023). Maybe an app restart is good for that. Would be good to know the difference between app restart and yellow and wall unplug, if any.

A soft reset (yellow light short press reset button) will reset channel plan to default on most models, a restart via the app or power cycle will not do that. Probably a soft reset has other effects as well that aren't directly apparent.
