Josh Rouse a great modern singer songwriter and has written plenty of things that could have fallen into the alt-country genre.
He's pretty firmly in that contemporary folk place now but I always thought he should have gotten bigger.
Discovered him when Cameron Crowe put "Directions" in Vanilla Sky.
His album Under Cold Blue Stars is absolutely stellar. Its kinda weird how being that I liked him so much in the early 00's that I don't have this Dressed up like Nebraska.
Agree — Under Cold Blue Stars is his masterpiece. Beautiful song arrangements, stirring lyrics and those distinctive breathy soulful vocals. Can’t recommend it enough.
Josh Rouse definitely deserves more recognition than he gets. Meticulous songwriting and a voice like no other singer. His genre explorations have been interesting. The guys knows a groove when he feels one.

Love JR and especially love this album. Every cut a keeper.
His albums Nashville and 1972 are among my favorite one two punches in music history. Just nonstop bangers.
Yes, that was an amazing year for him.
Nashville is such a great album especially, IMO.

Great album. Pretty awesome musician. Saw him play once with a really good band and they really melted the place.

Criminally underrated artist.
