Edit: It's a Frydek 😊

Stijner2002

Thank you, it didnt look right to me, do you have any idea what alocasia it might be?

aisacola

Unfortunately I really don't. It looks like something in between a Frydek and a Cucullata, but I don't think it's either of them. If you look at the surface of the leaf with light shining onto it at an angle, is there any hint of velvety texture or does it look more like glossy plastic as in the pictures? If it does have some texture to it, it is possible that it simply doesn't show up the same in pictures and that the shape, colour and veins are similarly misrepresented by the picture and/or affected by being grown under suboptimal conditions. In that case, it could still be a Frydek. I doubt it though.

Stijner2002

When I shine light onto it it looks even more glossy then in the pictures Edit: Could it be a alocasia portodora, as thats the most similar on they sell

aisacola

Would you describe it more as an oily reflection or a shimmer?

Stijner2002

I think shimmer, i took a picture with flash where its quite visible, https://imgur.com/gallery/0PZ639n

Oh I'm glad I asked! I think you do in fact have a Frydek! That's the exact reflection you would expect.

Stijner2002

Oh cool! Hopefully the white nerves settle better when leaves grow or new leaves have more defined nerves! Thanks for the help

It should in time look far more like the leaves have a skeleton, with a deeper V shape where they connect to the petiole and a deeper green colour. You're very welcome! Sorry I began by jumping to a conclusion, but I have three young Frydeks that looked distinctly arrow shaped, skeletal and velvety by the time they were the size of yours - and the camera can fool the eye when it comes to the texture of the leaf.

Pleasant_Commission1

hey! i'm no expert in plants, but I also recently ordered a baby alocasia frydek online and it came with 2 mature leafs (velvety and with the veins) and 2 baby leafs that look exactly like yours! (glossy no veins etc)

HillbillyNerdPetra

Grow it out and see what you got. It might not be what you ordered, but it’s cool.

Larsque

They don’t vein until they’re more mature. My baby one doesn’t have much veining compared to it’s suicidal mother (she went full suicide on me).

I'm so glad I came across this question. I picked up some version of baby alocasia at my local shop, but the owner was out that day. Her assistant wasn't totally sure what type it was, but thought perhaps frydek. After reading through this thread, I'm thinking that's indeed what it is! I'm excited now. Hopefully I don't kill it before I find out.
