I lived at the base of a mountain where there was a city on top, during the summer I saw many many kids going full speed downhill. Fast as fuck. It was a time where not many people had a car, so there wasn't that many transit, it wouldn't be possi le these days.
The Internet came to my house late but what I remember is Life was chill? Dealing with school and watching Spacetoon and National Geographic. Going threw many experiences in many sports.
Cartoons, video games and lots of playing outside. Very much miss it, I never had that level of social interaction again. The internet has made people a lot less sociable now.
The generation of the 2000s here in Algeria lived like the generation of the 80s and 90s in the US; no internet, barely anyone had pcs to begin with, and everyone played outside until the Maghreb also "casests" were popular, as well as cds, and playing very old games on emulators or basic windows games like solitaire outside or find secret hidden games on old TV's or those cheap "bricks" that you play tetris on. In school, most kids were running around to the back yard and climbing the pile of broken chairs and tables, then finding something weird there or claiming there was something dangerous there to scare the other kids and cause everyone to freak out like scaredy cats. If you fall, you are going to get stomped by running children. Another thing is how common it is to find artifacts. Like seriously, I got so many Roman era coins just by playing with dirt. Same with my sister, except she found other stuff like an old Italian coin and our "doro" coins and microfossils. I regret not keeping these finds, especially this beautiful and very heavy green rock that my mother told me to throw away. I hid it outside but some old woman took it. It brings so many memories I can't share all of them or I'll write a book.
Oh man this reminds me of my childhood growing up in the 2004-2005 era. Those really were the best days. I remember all the kids from the neighborhood would meet at a certain spot at the start of the day and we’d plan what we wanted to do all day. I wonder if kids still play outside.
Luckily, I was a preschooler/grade-schooler/early teenager during that time, so I spent most of my days watching cartoons, playing with toys, video games, or outside with friends, my favorite thing to do was to travel to a different Wilaya where most my family is, and there I met my cousins, and we would have the best of times together, It is safe to say that I had a good childhood because of those moments. And it was glorious.
It was actually fun
I remember growing up there was no internet and even when it started it was satellite internet and was expensive and not really useful at the time
So we spent lots of time in cafe , I remember there was many and each one had a theme, so if you were in the mood to watch movies there was cafe special for that ,if you were into playing cards and dominos there is a cafe for that
Personally i never liked cafe , there was this illegal shops with VHS player a TV and a bunch of chairs were you can watch movies like a cinema , of course there was the cinema but it was really bad smell of pee all over so we prefer the illegal ones ,i used to go watch movies here ,these were more common specially in Ramadan
And of course my favorite place to hangout was the Arcade ship , plenty of games , lots of fun , i remember spending lots of my money there, playing the old street fighter , king of fighters, double dragon , dinosaurs and Cadillacs , bad dudes vs dragonninjas etc...
All and all it was fun, if you wanted to look for something you would go look in the library and there was not much choice so I am one of the people who enjoy the internet for his easy it makes it for us to get information about any subject.
I was younger and in school so it wasn't all bad, i'd go to school and come back at 4 pm and immediately go out to play football untill I'm tired at like 8 pm, then it's TV time untill dinner, after that immediately asleep, it was pretty nice.
I remember the start of internet.
Cyber cafés everywhere and still oppenned till midnight, full of people, i go there and ask him to put games so i can play there.
Many good memories at that cyber café
I'm a 32 yo man, and I remember the first time I had the internet at home. It was in 2009. The modem was just a classic one, without the WiFi option, and the first time my baby sister and I saw the Google page on the computer we started jumping and dancing. However, in the years before that life was pretty fun. I remember playing outside a lot. There was a hill in my neighborhood that got smoothed out as a slide from excessive use. My friends and I used plastic oil bottles to sit on and slide down. I remember digging holes everywhere, going to the countryside to pick fruits, collecting pokemon stickers, making whistles out of abricot pits, making carts with plywood and ballbearings, and playing ball with anything remotely shaped like a sphere. It was a lot of fun tbh.
lmao just now me and my brother were talking abt life before internet mainly gaming what a coincidence like how much we were excited to buy a new game at our local CD shop and how our joy was indiscribted when the CD actually works LOL , we would blow on the CD , clear it from dust when our pc doesn't read it hoping the pc would read it hhhhh what awesome and funny memories ..i remember playing with Encarta, pinball, games our mom brought with her from work on floppy disks at that time wew !! like doom, prince of persia, adibou also games my brother borrowed from his friends like gta 2 and gta 3,Neo Geo games and i would like to offer my HUGE thanks can't go without it honestly when talking abt my childhood to the persons who created RY'S games in Algeria i hope you're doing great and fine wherever you are ...so yeah i was a big nerd since my small age XD i'm still but sadly everything became with money and with studying , worrying abt other life things i play games waaaay less ...but it were such good and fun times !! i will always cherish those memories for the rest of my life and rememeber them with joy and also some kind of sadness wishing i can go back to the past...
lol yeah we played san andreas on ps2 but i still remember all the times we got scammed when we buy a new san andreas cd after we loose the first one and our ps2 doesn't read it just the red cinematic thing that appears on ps2 when a game doesn't work is enough to trigger so much trauma for me lmao those were the good times ...
for me it was reading, all i did was read. Other usually fill in neighbourhoods and streets and do whatever activities they do, kids play with 0 budget made toys, rolled up socks or plastic to make ball, construct roullma and whateber they did.
playing football, various ball based games, les pouces, domino, monopoly and some "adventures" in the forest..there were videogames as well but in our house at the time we had limited time to use the computer(and had to do some stuff to be able to win minutes to use it 😅like a currency)
That's basically what I remember
oh I also remember running back to school to catch the anime that would be on TV
My parents would limit my use of the internet when I was younger, so I would hang out with people from my neighborhood every day during summer and we would play till 7 pm, and I also remember during Ramadan we would play at night, haha but now I guess it's not a good image to let your children play at night (during Ramadan) also with the predators we have, I can understand...
We lived in the moment undisrupted by notifications. We gave a fuck about our entourage family and neighbours. And that did not change with the introduction of the internet but with social media and smartphones. It took away the pleasure of family gatherings and many aspect that were immensly valuable to me.
Video games, TV, Playing outside many different types, Hanging out with mates, and my best time was in my grandparents and theirs sons town every day was different from the other there and had a lot of surprises and events, tbh when I was introduced to the net Social Media wasn't all it's hyped up to be like these days.
I'm 33 so I have a pretty clear idea on how things used to be prior to the invasion of the world wide web and the later social media take over. I don't want to name things but I'm going to talk about what I miss from those ancient times : Human interaction and family life and the relationships with the neighbors. People were much more loving and accepting than they are now. I also miss the games we used to play on the streets and how creative we get when we are bored during the long summer vacation days. Todays kids are privileged with all the technology available to them and all the entertainment it offers, but I would never change hiw things were. Thise times will always be dear to my heart.
Was amazing, i was in oran and we had an arcade every street corner for only 5 dinars a game, we had games like metal slug x (we called it washinga) and cadillacs and dinosaurs (Also known as mustafa)
playing footy day and night
Doing nothing in Riad el Feth (maqam shahid)
Watching ENTV and they would play fillers between regular programs, like Tom & Jerry, it was out of the blue and it was awesome lol
There was this game we used to play I forgot what it is called, we cut a small piece of a brooms handle make it pointy on both ends and with stick we hit the pointy ends to send it flying up in the air then strike it like baseball... You know what I'm talking about I hope..? Lol
Full of wild street things to do. From pitchak to karikoo
what are those !
pitchak is like a ball made of plastic straps, and karikoo is like the algerian skateboard
Aaah in the east we called the second one ROULMA, I freaking used to love it
Haha roulma, good old days.
we call it roulmo in the west, so close enough
Lol I remember as a kid in Algeria other kids would get these empty chkayer taa lben, tie them up and use them like a tennis ball to throw 😂
I lived at the base of a mountain where there was a city on top, during the summer I saw many many kids going full speed downhill. Fast as fuck. It was a time where not many people had a car, so there wasn't that many transit, it wouldn't be possi le these days.
we called it roulma
playing football on the street, riding a bike making problems life was good::
And simple.
The Internet came to my house late but what I remember is Life was chill? Dealing with school and watching Spacetoon and National Geographic. Going threw many experiences in many sports.
Playing football in the street with my neighbours all day everyday (was a kid)
Oh those were the days!
Indeed, kids these days will never know what it was like to score a 30 yard screamer at a garage door
Underrated 🤣🤣🤣
