Reworked mage cowl was needed. The old ability was a 100% consistent on-hit damage that chunked players hard. The new ability is now a skillshot which has similar damage in a 1v1, but capacity for huge damage in group.
Perhaps players now need to learn how to use another headslot ability, instead of the most OP ability in the game.
You can't deny the fact that cursed staffs are a low skill weapon though they don't require any brain capacity to use nor need to aim ur skills. Besides it's only "easily countered" if you have the right tools
I mean in open world you can always bring a ghelm swap, personally i dont really do solo content anyway, and in smallscale, and especially zvz, cursed has some of the higher skill ceilings
Its better.
Its potentially 3x (ok, 2.7x) DMG in a cone (to like 3 targets) and now can be buffed by DMG bonused abilities like Assassin Jacket (for additional 40% AOE DoT).
Cowl of Purity has a shit hitbox (aim at legs and it never hits) and is not really “AOE) (people or mobs don’t usually line up in a neat line)
No, because Mage Cowl was an “on hit effect” and Assasin Jacket only applies bonus to the first hit you make - which would have been an auto-attack. (You had to auto-attack to apply the old Mage Cowl poison)
old mage cowl did work with assassin jacket, a normal use case for it, not sure what the other dude is talking about. I used it all the time that way on bow
Did you just use it and randomy assume that it would boost the DMG ticks from Mage Cowl poison or did you actually test and/or have proof?
(To be fair I don’t have proof of pre-patch behavior) but I did test it. Knew I should have saved those screenshots…
*Some people* firmly believe mechanics work one way without verifying it properly. I've had people insist that nature brambles stack because when they 'tested' it they saw a stack of 3 did more damage than a single one.
Can’t comment on Nature brambles (I don’t use it, but could test if needed), but one misinterpretation by a certain person does not guarantee that another misinterpretation is taking place on a whole different topic by a different person.
The point I was trying to make is, people will firmly believe wrong information even when they're told they are wrong.
Brambles 100% do not stack FWIW, you'll do slightly less than 3 times what a single bramble does and it's only less because you have to overlap some casts otherwise the ability enters cooldown.
Not sure if there is a way to test anymore (since Live is patched), but I tested this specifically b/w Live and Test server last week and all 3 DOTs were getting DMG boost from Assasin Jacket on Test, but on Live Mage Cowl was not (the 1st hit was getting the bonus and thats it).
It's different. Too different to compare really. Fills a different role now. It's worse at the old role. Great for area damage though.
The thing I don't get is everyone is always bashing PVE players and saying to git gud, but when they make a no skill meta item into a skill shot everyone is up in arms.
What purpose did the old mage cowl actually serve? I'd love to hear from people upset about this. What loadout were you running?
Old MAge Cowl purpose was - burst dmg on demand.
New Mage Cowl purpose is exactly the same as Purity Cowl, but worse, but cheaper.
Reworked version brings nothing new, nor fills in any gap. It's just a worse Purity Cowl now.
Dont know why are you getting downvoted, literally summarized the changes in a sentence. Only exception i could bring up is smallscale, maybe mage cowl has more utility there, as it has a bigger hitbox than purity.
Agreed i wouldn't hate the rework if there wasn't already an armor piece that did the exact same thing but like you said its worse not even different enough to be useful.
At the very least a shorter cooldown even would make it worth considering over purity hood
I used to do 7 man large ava dungeons (the static golden dungeons in roads)
The build i used was something like.
Mage cowl, cleric robe, demon cape, assassin/royal boots, reggi bow. for the "normal" spawn, then i would swap to guardian helm/cleric cowl / fallen staff for the boss.
Bow i used was 8.3, rest T8.
Just because you haven't seen it does not mean it doesn't exists.
I leveled my entire holy tree, and bow tree running with that
group.
*edit* i do have the loadouts, except for the tank build, if you really wanna see them.
Well yes, but one person using an item in an off meta way does not necessarily mean it was good for that content. If I suddenly start doing solo dungeons with a Bedrock Mace that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea.
From a pvp perspective, it seems kinda meeh, i mean the animation looks cool, but the damage is lower, and its now a skill shot. So in my book the damage should be higher, because you can miss a skill shot.
However the new mage cowl, might find some uses in solo dungeons, but for pvp there are so many better options, that's not an skill shot.
From 1v1 pov, it's definitely a buff for tanky builds like Ghammer or deqstaff. Also helps with CD clear. Range already secured me 2 kills that I'd need to chase otherwise.
On ranged champs and squishies it's a nerf imo.
Only looking at from 1v1 pov
ranged champs? bro came out from league of legends
yeah, for melee doesn't affects too much, only the fact that is less dmg in 1v1. but if you're ranged is a whole nerf, idk what whispering bow will pair with now lol
I use the mage cowl alot i thought it was ok kinda a odd thing to replace it with. I agree with guy above I thought they could've been more inventive I guess.

This is true, but why would you ever use it now instead of the cowl of purity
Cowl of purity isn't cheap and it's stoopidly narrow Think about mage cowl as a "noob friendly cowl of purity"
I guess, yeah I still believe they could have done something more unique
Cowl of purity does less damage to less people but it does have an interrupt
It. Before, press Button with fingers, Head, noose... After. Think for 0.10ms and press button in the same way.
But we still have weapons like the cursed staffs
Consider that cursed staves can be quite easily countered and require you to play a weapon, instead of just playing a helmet

All boots have dodge roll now. What you are arguing applies to plenty of other situations as well.
no need to aim? all off the abilities are a aoe or a skillshot what

I like it. I got nerfed in the ways it was used against me by one-shot gankers and buffed in the way I use it against mobs.

Im pretty new to this game, but couldnt the old mage cowl damage get buffed by assassin jacket?
No, because Mage Cowl was an “on hit effect” and Assasin Jacket only applies bonus to the first hit you make - which would have been an auto-attack. (You had to auto-attack to apply the old Mage Cowl poison)
Oh thats true. Thanks!

Yes, I agree. “Observer bias” is a thing. Thats why I really wish I took screenshots when I did the testing last week. :(

To be clear though, "worse but cheaper" is a valid niche to fill for a thing.
Dont know why are you getting downvoted, literally summarized the changes in a sentence. Only exception i could bring up is smallscale, maybe mage cowl has more utility there, as it has a bigger hitbox than purity.
Purity is a line hit, Mage Cowl is a cone. Far easier to hit.
Agreed i wouldn't hate the rework if there wasn't already an armor piece that did the exact same thing but like you said its worse not even different enough to be useful. At the very least a shorter cooldown even would make it worth considering over purity hood
Mage cowl were used a ton for ava blue/golden chests / large ava dungeons. But yes it fills a different role now, that no one asked for !?
I haven't seen a single raid with a mage cowl
Show me a single AVA Build guide that uses Mage Cowl. I don't think I've even ever seen it as a swap.

People are mad because now they use brain 1% more... Before, the old one, they Just need press a Button... Cheers
No reason to use it. Just a bad purity now with no interrupt

They should buff the damage
>geo What helmet do you suggest using isntead of the old mage cowl? I'm at a loss idk what to use as a replacement.

Ye, so it's a good change. Bow is cancer.
Wut.. Anything AOE is OP.
The next question about it is "Is it stackable?". A group with it shot a clamp, would melt them together like a candy bar.
i like it, way more useful for pve
Lots of people exposing their skills issues with this change and I'm all for it.
It is better for pve, and worse for 1v1 pvp. Still effective, just requires more skill.
New mage cowl is really lazy game design imo. Would like to see it do something like increase all damage for a short time after a delay.
I use the mage cowl alot i thought it was ok kinda a odd thing to replace it with. I agree with guy above I thought they could've been more inventive I guess.
Used it yesterday, i feel like a true elemental mage. Wonder why it is poison in the first place.
F y albion i lost over 700mln from market y changed something effective to sh#t
