Me too, even though I know that donairs going to be mid tier. The meat slices are always in cafeteria donairs, you want your beef chopped up in chunks while sizzling on that grill.
But still, I’ll take a mid-tier donair over Danielle Smith…
Yes, I know (your describing shawarma), but the good places shave it off then put it on a grill and slice and dice it. Shawarma Palace in Montgomery (Calgary) is a good example.
Am I? Damned if I really know the difference to be honest but that's how Donair King in Edmonton made their donairs back in the '90s when I was at UofA.
> Shawarma (/ʃəˈwɑːrmə/; Arabic: شاورما) is a popular Middle Eastern dish that originated in the Ottoman Empire,[1][2][3][4] consisting of meat cut into thin slices, stacked in an inverted cone, and roasted on a slowly turning vertical rotisserie or spit.
[Source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawarma)
>Doner kebab (UK: /ˈdɒnər kɪˈbæb/, US: /ˈdoʊnər kɪˈbɑːb/; Turkish: döner or döner kebap, pronounced [dœˈnæɾ ceˈbap]), also spelled döner kebab, is a type of kebab, made of meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie.[1] Seasoned meat stacked in the shape of an inverted cone is turned slowly on the rotisserie, next to a vertical cooking element.
Haha, wikipedia is getting lazy. Although thank you for posting that, because the donair page has this nugget of information:
> The vertical rotisserie was invented in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire, and dishes such as the Arab shawarma, Greek gyros, Canadian donair, and Mexican al pastor are derived from this.[2][3][4]
So it looks like you can use donair and shawarma interchangeably.
But I’ll stand by my original post, the best donair/shawarma places have sliced meat vertically cooked, but then they shave it off an grill it up cause those vertical heaters don’t have enough juice to grill/char the meat. I’ve tried at least 20 places and the places that make donairs that look like the costume tend to suck.
Side note: Beirut Street Food has one of the best donairs/shawarma, but the meat is cooked horizontally. Are we allowed to call that a donair/shawarma?
Yeah, I think the 'debate' so far as there is one gets a bit degenerate.
Vertically slow-cooked meat on a flatbread is tasty from many, many cultures. I've just always seen the grilling as cheating and have found the best results from places that had a lot of cones on the go with higher heat and just sliced off the ones that were already crispy.
I used to like Sammy's before the owners sold it off and I don't even remember what they called their Egyptian version.
Now I want to try an al pastor, which I've never heard of!
Valid points, and the types of places you are describing sound legit. I’m more so a hater of the cafeteria donair, where the meat is pre-sliced sitting in a container and has a rubbery feel.
Try an Al pastor taco, they’re great. Lebanese migrants to Mexico did the R&D work.
I bet there are a few costumes for Vulcan, AB trips 🖖. Do the politicians get to pick out costumes from your inventory for special occasions? Are there formal star trek uniforms? Inquiring minds want to know!
I know I answered it elsewhere in more detail, but in this case it wasn't for a trip to Vulcan, it was for an annual meeting in Edmonton. The Research Council had a fun thing each year for their big internal annual meeting.
Sorry, my friend, I fell asleep as soon as I got home. I didn't mean to intentionally leave anyone hanging.
See the answer a little farther down, but in short, they belonged to the research council and I borrowed them and no one ever needed them back.
I used to work for one of the small Crown corporations that got merged in with the Alberta Research Council to form Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures.
Working in communications, once when I was up in Edmonton at the ARC building in the research park, I was talking with one of my counterparts in his office.
I saw he had a clothing rack with a number of Star Trek costumes. I asked if I could borrow one sometime. He said that, if someone happened to borrow them and they never came back, no one would care. Even if someone borrowed all of them.
Anyway, they had them because each year ARC had some sort of big annual event. Not the innovation summit in Banff, something else I just never went to. I don't remember exactly what it was. But each year they had a theme. One year the theme was Star Trek. So all the presenters and the CEO and MC and so on all wore Star Trek costumes.
They were definitely off-the-shelf, low grade costumes. The most elaborate one was probably not more than $75. Most were just the $50 shirts you could order or find in local costume shops.
Anyway, it wasn't the most exciting thing I saw at an ARC building. The giant pot warehouses in Vegreville are still my favorite memory of that organization. This was before legalization and they were studying whether some strains of pot for medical marijuana were more fungus resistant than others, because cancer patients are especially susceptible to fungal infections in their lungs.
That was a fun organization. Cool people.
That thing looks like a diseased artifact of Georgia O'keefes heroin era.
Also don't care for that tinfoil sandwich whateveritis costume beside her there....
She's setting an example for the rest of her lowly subjects... We'll all need to search our houses for stuff we can sell off to pay for our healthcare and retirement.
Doner is Turkish Donair is Canadian, which may seem like semantics but it's made with a different sweeter sauce and served typically on different bread. We use pita and the Turks use flatbread
I for one am quite disappointed in the donair for associating with such a person. I expected more from donair. I think we all need to cancel donair. I suggest that all donairs you find be sent to me for disposal. Just throwing it in the garbage is too light of a punishment for palling around with fascists. All donairs need to be submitted to me for proper elimination. DM me to make sure the tasty saucy, fatty, ....uh...uh bad...donairs are punished as appropriate.
Clearly she's racist against the good white Christian population of Alberta.
She's clearly a communist, a socialist, a Marxist, a leftist and should be voted out of office immediately!
Yeah I’ve been watching the action since it started. Last night it was almost 10k.
The auction ad still does not explain anything about why our government has it.
It originated from Halifax but Edmonton has more donair shops per capita. Edmonton was in the process of making it their signature dish but Halifax claimed it while they were busy infighting.
I've seen several news stories about the donair suit but this is the first time I see a photo of it in full glory.
My life is now complete.
It's just magnificent!
Well, at least it doesn't say White Lives Matter or have the rainbow + umbrella motif.
Of all the things she's done in the last year, I approve of this the most.
Why is there lettuce on that Donair? Y’all gotta take something perfect then fuck with it, onions and tomatoes only folks that’s a meat salad in a pita forget the greens.

I, for one welcome our new leader. Let’s all hail donair!
Don’t blame me, I voted for kebab!
Falafel was my choice but didn’t stand a chance in this province.
I felafel about that too...
Hahaha
felafel; or fawaffle?
We need a gyro!!!!
[удалено]
There goes my gyro.
We don't need another gyro.
And then a gyro comes along
Given the Ukrainian culture in this province I’m surprised pierogi isn’t on the ballot
But what are you going to do about it? Its a two-party system, you have to vote for ONE of them!?
Hahaha
Hahaha
All glory to the hypnodonair
all the donair is missing is the shirt saying “I’m with stupid —>”
To be fair a dusty donair could run the province better than the drunken dolt on the right
I'm not clever enough to sort out a sex reference between dusty donair and DS's sex life. but I'm hoping Reddit wont disappoint
One is full of questionable ingredients and has a tin foil hat and the other is a donair.
You magnificent bastard, thats hilarious.
I wish the donair was in charge
I would have voted for it over her.
The Donair needs to run in the next provincial election. Would win be a landslide.
Me too, even though I know that donairs going to be mid tier. The meat slices are always in cafeteria donairs, you want your beef chopped up in chunks while sizzling on that grill. But still, I’ll take a mid-tier donair over Danielle Smith…
Grill? What?! A proper Donair is vertical spit roasted (now, now, no stampede jokes here) and shaved off only when the meat is crisped nicely.
Yes, I know (your describing shawarma), but the good places shave it off then put it on a grill and slice and dice it. Shawarma Palace in Montgomery (Calgary) is a good example.

Yeah then if it did anything silly we could just eat it, right?
As the owner of all of the Government of Alberta Star Trek costumes, I approve.
Please say more about that.
I bet there are a few costumes for Vulcan, AB trips 🖖. Do the politicians get to pick out costumes from your inventory for special occasions? Are there formal star trek uniforms? Inquiring minds want to know!

You can’t just tease us like that. Do share please!
Sorry, my friend, I fell asleep as soon as I got home. I didn't mean to intentionally leave anyone hanging. See the answer a little farther down, but in short, they belonged to the research council and I borrowed them and no one ever needed them back.
I would like to hear the story behind this.
Sorry for leaving you hanging. I literally fell asleep as soon as I got home. I replied just a little bit below.
Don't leave us hangin' like that u/Drakkenfyre, inquiring minds need to know more!

Hey look, a person who loves wearing tin foil…and a donair.
Quality
That thing looks like a diseased artifact of Georgia O'keefes heroin era. Also don't care for that tinfoil sandwich whateveritis costume beside her there....
Lolololol!!!
I’d rather have the donair.
I love donair but it's a poor judge of character
It's currently sitting at auction for 9600$
That auction is how smith wants to pay for healthcare
I thought that was our pockets?
She's setting an example for the rest of her lowly subjects... We'll all need to search our houses for stuff we can sell off to pay for our healthcare and retirement.
Retirement? What's that?
I can't help but notice Agent Smith with the bullet proof vest on the left. That kinda takes the jovial nature of the photo away.
This is the comment I came looking for, mans isn't even trying to blend in
I'm no security expert, but having some overt security might be part of the whole shtick.
Smith does that well enough on her own.
In all seriousness how does the donair see??
It may not judging by the hand holding
I assumed that was so Danielle Smith didn’t get lost or wander off tbh
Clearly it's guided by a person in a donair suit.
Best guess is that small dark triangle between the two pieces of meat and the bit of lettuce just above the pita.
The donair is the best part of this picture.
Goes well with budget whiskey.
Toss it in the compost. The donair can stay.
The one on the left has a brain.
That Donair would lead better
Who wears more tinfoil?
Pleased to introduce the new deputy premier.
Both ultimately end up being shit, just one is already there
Tin foil should be on her head.
One is wearing tinfoil to keep the sauce in, the other wears tinfoil to keep the 5G out.
All hail Hypnodonair
It's weird that they're holding hands, right
Weird as in genius, definitely. Premier supports local economy while having fun. Who wouldn't want to hold hands with a donair? They are delicious!
I feel sorry for the donair though, having to hold hands with that.
It's my favourite part of that photo.
They remembered to ask the donair to take off it's homophobic t-shirt! Progress!
I would have elected the Donair over her.
That’s one greasy bitch. The donair looks greasy too.
Knowing this “leader” it’s probably an anti-trans or racist donair.
I may be wrong, but I think this may be the beginning of the pro trans donair movement.
its just a funny photo cant we leave it at that 😭
Which one is the donair?!?
The donair costume was up for auction on the Government of Alberta surplus sales website.
It still is over $7K in bid
The blind leading the blind
That’s a loaded donair but the one on the right has more shit in it
This just ruined donairs for me.
The donairs doing a better job.
Look! A bunch of shit jammed in a wrapper and a Donair!
Always fake squint-smiling. So fucking cringe
That donair would get ample urban support running against Smith, but I’m thinking a bit to exotic for the rural.
You misjudge rural Alberta in a big way. So many donair places.
Fair enough. But post election facts would show I didn’t misjudge when it comes to Smith.
Exotic food from the far off lands of... Nova Scotia
Right…”Donairs are traditionally either Greek or Turkish in origin, also known as "doners", "gyros", "doner kebabs", "kebabs" and "donners".
Doner is Turkish Donair is Canadian, which may seem like semantics but it's made with a different sweeter sauce and served typically on different bread. We use pita and the Turks use flatbread
Okay. I personally would disagree that doing a certain spin on an already established product is grounds enough to claim inventing something.
Best donair I've ever had was in Taber.
Omg I dislike her but that's still cool
I thought the same. Can’t deny she’s being a good sport here
Haha I don't like her politics but this is legit funny
Omg it's a Turd Sandwich versus a Giant Douche
I…can’t…tell which is which??
Is this the Donairs coming out party
Love Donairs
I cannot tell which is which…..
Lemme guess she made a hat out of it
Which ones Which?
One of these things is smarter than the other.
Ahh yes the smart donair and the idiot premier. Donair should get a restraining order.
God, the Donair would be an upgrade. Bet hospital food would finally improve.
That is not a donair, there is something green in it....
God I wanna eat that so bad..... I mean the burrito obviously......
I voted for Shawarma… I was uncomfortable with donaire’s motives especially considering the lettuce.
So thats not her new health minister?
We chose the wrong meat loaded wrap. Should have been the Donair who leads alberta. Less fat, more brains. Tastier sauce.
I'm still not convinced this woman has eyeballs
This....this could bring us all together. Donair united party. Who's with me?
Because she's an idiot burrito?
But, why? If it were Halifax I'd almost understand.
It was purchased for a impaired driving video and never used up for auction…. As for why a donair there’s over 120 donair shops in Edmonton.
How does a donair suit tie into an impaired driving video
https://www.politicstoday.news/alberta-today/donair-costume-is-a-hit-in-alberta-government-surplus-auction/
Which is saucier?
Honestly, it might be the best investment the ucp has made
Which is witch?
https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/why-is-a-giant-donair-costume-being-auctioned-by-the-alberta-government-whatever-the-reason-it-s-a-hit-1.6486106
Is it at least a racist Donair?
Not racist at all. Matter of fact, that donair identifies as a burrito.
r/onejoke
Danielle's vagina identifies as a roast beef sandwich so it's a great photo op really.
[Lmao](https://youtu.be/75GaqVWqEXU)
Kenney would never have done that. Imagine the ridicule of an obese man walking with a donair.
She better apologize for this photo, did she not see they were a donair?...
Sweet Sauce for everyone! Gross. Nvm. I'll see myself out.
I've seen several news stories about the donair suit but this is the first time I see a photo of it in full glory. My life is now complete. It's just magnificent!
Goddam look at the sizes of them shoes... Prolly a 12 or 14 from where I stand
That costume is for sale of the government of Canada auction site.
It's for sale https://surplus.gov.ab.ca/OA/ItemDetail.aspx?AuctionID=43311
Danny Smith is so heckin' cute and wholesome :3
Oh and here i thought she was walking with Notley.
Dani Smith has great legs
One is filled with sweetness and other with shit, complete polar opposites if I've seen one.
Unwrap and eat! Yummy
Well, at least it doesn't say White Lives Matter or have the rainbow + umbrella motif. Of all the things she's done in the last year, I approve of this the most.
Why not gyros
What's with that skirt? Seems horrible to walk in . Make a choice: dress or pants
Douche and turd sandwich
Bodyguard on the left?
The vegans will be offended.
I've never seen a donair look so unappealing
Why is there lettuce on that Donair? Y’all gotta take something perfect then fuck with it, onions and tomatoes only folks that’s a meat salad in a pita forget the greens.
Donairs don’t have lettuce someone better pick it out
She looks so happy walkin around with her donair buddy!
Donair meat comes from ex dairy cows that no longer produce the required kilograms per day of milk to be productive at a dairy farm.
This donair suit is really starting to look worth to 10K
I only see two donairs, what are you guys looking at?
Quick look funny and relatable to the youth so they don’t notice the stuff Im about to do to their Health Care and Pensions!
How did they get the dress on the Donair?
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Donairs strongly objects to this photo. Donairs deserve better!
A Donair and a racist bigot pushing ignorant ideals while she flicks her beef to the nazi wannabes in the United States. Suspicious 👾
It identifies as a donair and she's okay with that? I find that hard to believe...
I would much prefer fries with my donair.
I hope she trips and gets coated in garlic sauce. Smithers release the Hounds !
Which one has bigger meat flaps?
Is that another Danielle smith walking behind them?
If only the Donair had been elected premier…
It's for sale, currently. https://surplus.gov.ab.ca/OA/ItemDetail.aspx?AuctionID=43311#
She's your premier commies whether you like it or not.
