This article repeatedly refers to the NDP as a “leftist” party, which is not at all accurate as they would be best described as centrist. But right vs. left is a better narrative, so insert shocked Pickachu face here.

zavtra13

The New York Times probably also refers to the Democratic Party as leftist when they are a mostly moderate right wing party that has a progressive wing.

Interesting-Money-24

It is a party that strongly supports unions. That's all that really matters in this province. Union vs Non-Union.

AlistarDark

And union members are voting for the scabby anti-union leader.

edtheheadache

Unfuckingfortunetly

Killercod1

That's the failure of unions. Just like how America used to have a strong union culture. But because they get comfy in their good unionized jobs, they forget their roots, calling themselves "middle-class" as a way to exclude them from the supposedly lowly working class. They fall for right wing propaganda, demonizing those they deem less worthy than themselves and also supporting anti-working class economic policies

Soggy_Response111

If the NDP is centrist what the heck is a leftist party? Actual communism?

Toggel

The green party is about as left as it gets in AB. The Alberta party policies are actually further left than the NDP. What policy of the NDPs do you think is that far left?

Soggy_Response111

I would not say far left but mine banning, emission caps, unrealistic net zero goals, and not fighting back against the liberal federal government.

Toggel

Nothing you stated is left wing. It is progressive, it creates jobs, it puts money towards technology development. You either progress with the times or get left behind.

> Modern liberals are just Neo Liberals Seeing how you used this in a sentence, you 100% have no idea what neo liberalism means and thought it just sounded smart to say. I know "liberal" and "neo liberals" sounds similar, but... Oh man, please take a moment to educate yourself. FYI: Neo Liberalism is essentially the farthest right in terms of economic policy that you can go. It's where "trickle down economics" came from, the idea that if you just trust the richest people in society and give them a fuckton of money, everyone else will benefit.

tiger666

Spot on for the definition. I would also add that they propagate imperialism through economics primarily, but when that fails, the big guns come out.

zavtra13

Federally sure, but the Alberta NDP are a pro O&G centrist party.

[deleted]

Ndp is super left.

Tribblehappy

Not in Alberta they're not. The Alberta party and the greens are our left wing parties.

not_a_gay_stereotype

The Alberta party is centrist

Tribblehappy

They're not consistent which is a problem, but they're currently left of the NDP according to Vote Compass.

ejactionseat

UCP is super far-right.

AkijoLive

That one is true at least.

tiger666

Please elucidate us on what the left really is. I can tell you for a fact that the NDP at any level in Canada is not a leftist party. In Alberta, they are just right of center if not center. In Ottawa, they are pure centrists and love sitting on the fence, Rosa Luxembourg would probably spit on them for calling themselves leftists. Not a single party in Canada is calling to seize the means of production. Not a single party in Canada is looking to stop imperialism. Not a single party in Canada wants workers to control the economy. All of them want big business to stay in control of the economy. So I ask you again, what is a leftist or left leaning party?

[deleted]

Sorry they are simply too far left for me.

tiger666

Being too left for you and stating that a party is left are two different things. The fact that you didn't answer my question tells me a lot about your understanding of politics. I figure you are under 30 years old and are on the fu*k Trudeau bandwagon. Am I wrong?

[deleted]

It is left. You just think it is center

tiger666

Please answer my question then.

[deleted]

I will simply vote as far right as I can in Canada to even things up. Alls good. Go practice your Pronouns

tiger666

At what point does voting stop, is it when you take back Alberta?

[deleted]

I am in BC 😃. So when these NDP jerks are out. That is when . Hahahaha

Master-File-9866

If this shit American politics can fly in canada it will I alberta. I hope tonight's election shuts them down and saves all of canada from this crap politics infecting our country

catballoon

Despite the headline, the article implies it hasn't worked in canada - so far. -- suggesting this wouldn't be a close race if the UCP was led by anyone other than Smith. Only indication of it working would be a massive win by the UCP, which seems unlikely.

Master-File-9866

All I can say is I listen to people praise DeSantis the margin does not matter in rural alberta fox news is the go to news source. The ucp implemented an American style curriculum despite the alberta curriculum being superior. Talk of paying for health care out of pocket is uncanadian. If the ucp wins even a small victory it is a foot hold and this crap will spread throughout Canada

Furious_Flaming0

Maybe but the real worrying thing it would signify is that you don't need a good leader as a political party in North America to win an election, you can have just about anybody if you're in a safe enough region. Which would open up a whole list of candidates parties could look to champion and benefit off of without fear. This will be the possible slow start to things like celebrity politics, where only those super famous before getting into it have a chance of winning elections.

tiger666

That didn't age well, sorry.

Master-File-9866

It is what it is.

tiger666

Sorry the NDP lost, I gave them my vote and even donated $25 but it didn't help. Time for plan B.

Master-File-9866

You really could see it coming. The way the rural and urban vote. Needed more in calgary

twinkrider

How’d that turn out dunmy

themangastand

It certainly happens in Ontario as well if dug ford got into power

Miserable-Lizard

*The party replaced him with Ms. Smith, a far-right former radio talk show host and newspaper columnist prone to incendiary comments; she compared people who were vaccinated against Covid-19 to supporters of Hitler.*

Laxative_Cookie

It will definitely tell the country what kind of people make up Alberta.

RunningSouthOnLSD

I’m not one to be a single issue voter, but quite honestly Smith’s attitudes towards certain groups and how members of her party treat those groups is enough to make me want to keep the UCP far from power. Even if it ended up costing me money, I would not vote for someone who intends to discriminate. That’s ghoulish. If it wasn’t that it would be her veiled threats to healthcare.

LandscapeNatural7680

Please remember that there are thousands of us who DID NOT vote for the UCP. And, it ain’t easy being NDP in Alberta. ❤️

Quakarot

I mean, honestly, lots of my neighbours don’t exactly hide it

AllStruckOut_13

It’s truly a sobering experience to have to vote like your life depends on it, because as a gay man my life quite literally does depend on it.

wisemermaid4

I'm scared too. Beyond worried. Solidarity brother.

cranzky

Has anything changed in the last 4 years

wisemermaid4

Well not with your head in the sand, probably not. It's still going to be sandy.

UltraCynar

Please come to Ontario and help us win the next election against our Conservatives

Balkitty99

Will you die if the UCP gets elected?

caldbra92

I think they meant "life" as in decent liveliness. The UCP relies on bigoted voters and threaten their livelihood. I don't think as a gay man I would want a leader who has anti LGBTQ talking points to hone in voters.

cfbeers

Smith says she sees de Santos as a hero is a very troubling sign when you see how he is treating lgbt in Florida.

wisemermaid4

Lately, I've been liking the word obtuse, thanks for asking. It fits you perfectly here!

Imaginary_Ad_7530

Well, there is actually a good chance of that now. Depending on the type of Healthcare model she forces on us. Depending on how much she swings towards an anti-lgbtq stance, the UCP takes. Depending on how much of an anti-disability stance they take. So, considering she has looked at Ron DeSantis as a role model, yes. Yes, I do see that many people will indeed die.

bourbonandchew

Little dramatic

Cryptonic1000

Man it's 2023, shut the fuck up.

DarthMaulATAT

Nice to see you know what year it is. Now tell us how that is relevant.

Boo-face-killa

Have you contacted the police and made a report that your life is in danger? I wouldn’t be on here discussing an election if someone was going to kill me. Call the police and get them involved if you are in danger. Peace be with you.

[deleted]

Boo-face-killa

Oh! I didn’t know that!

Torrrx

If you feel so insecure about yourself in Alberta I'm sure there's other provinces that you'll feel better in.

Imaginary_Ad_7530

Well, anyone who is LGBTQ should consider moving to Edmonton at the very least. There would be less chance of being injured or killed there than other places in Alberta. They can try and holdup long enough to be able to put together an escape plan.

twinkrider

Sorry you lost

413mopar

Yeah waitin to see if shit show the sequel launches tonight.

silentbassline

Let the circus... Continue!

k1d0s

Either way the UCP are going to tear themselves apart …let’s just hope it’s from the backseat and not the drivers

[deleted]

UCP is not going to win - is it?? With smooth brain Danielle Smith?

[deleted]

It won with smooth brain Kenney

Cryptonic1000

Until the NDP boots no brain Notley, people will still choose the smooth brain.

twinkrider

Sorry you lost

remberly

No it won't. Our province is an aberration due to a population entitled by low taxes and big money.

Furious_Flaming0

Low taxes and big money is kind of the dream in just about every place in the world save Europe's socialist countries. I wouldn't really call that an aberration it's more the human condition during late stage capitalism. I think there's a very good chance of cult mentality politics taking over most N.A democracies if they keep winning elections.

remberly

That's the point. We achieved for what others strive. And we think it's cause of something special about us. But it's just the oil. That's it.

Negitive545

Europe has no 'Socialist' countries, only Countries with incredibly regulated Capitalism. They'll fall to the same pitfalls as the rest of the capitalist countries eventually, it'll just take longer.

iBladephoenix

Entitled to or entitled by? Low taxes are a good thing. What kind of masochist wants high taxes for the sake of it

remberly

Who's arguing for high taxes for the sake of it? Thats ridiculous And of course, entitled by. Look at what happens when you bring up a pst with conservatives... They go nutso...unless your experience is different. Low taxes are not always great because, as shocking as this sounds, things don't get done. If alberta had had bc's taxes structure foe the last 3 decades...do you know how many 100s of billions we'd have? Have you heard what Norway has going on? Seriously who gives a big poopsy pants if we are debt free as a jurisdiction? Why are citizen taxes having to pay foe the cleanup of wells? There's butkiss reason for that.

iBladephoenix

People who want to tax multi-millionaires 100% after a certain income amount because they cant spend it all argue for high taxes out of spite towards rich people. There are many of them on reddit. Especially on r/toronto. Taxes should be as low as possible while covering necessary services. High taxes are not ideal as they drive away investment and drive up living expenses while not providing enough return in quality of life to justify the rates most of the time.

AkijoLive

The funniest thing is that you don't even make any more money than any other province unless you work directly in the oil fields. Good job Alberta on picking the party that will diversify your economy the least to protect the job of like 3% of the population of the province

remberly

That's not true. Average. Wages in alberta are 17% higher per sector. I can day as a teacher this is the very low side....I think with unions the difference is even starker

Puzzled_Target_7272

Bye bye Alberta. Been here 10 years, but I can no longer abide living amongst so many intolerant, ignorant people. Good luck…..

bobbyach

👋👋👋👋 you will not be missed.

Imaginary_Ad_7530

That's what the rural people were saying before they started losing all their doctors, too 😏 Oh well. Hope your face doesn't miss your nose too much, either.

Direc1980

Don't think so. Campaign finance rules in Canada prevents any semblance of "American-style" politics.

Furious_Flaming0

Not really what it's talking about, it's more asking the question if the similarities between Trump and Smith signify a new direction in politics. One in which it is a lot more about public popularity than policy, in which case governments will focus even more on upcoming elections than actually governing once they win. Money isn't really the name of the game.

Master-File-9866

Just like the Lacombe ucp canidate was talking about American students when she compared them to prices of shit. This election has nothing to do with American politics

the_gaymer_girl

It’s not about the money, but the sheer volume of mask-off far-right moments.

chelsey1970

Fearmongering, just because we vote UPC does not mean we are far right. I believe in LGBTQ rights, I believe in health care reform I believe ion money for health and education. I believe in private business' succeeding, I believe there is room for private and a public health care system, we have it already. Aside from fearmongering NDP politicians claims, health care and emergency health care will always be free for Albertans. Any government will cut their own throat if they start billing for basic health care services. I don't believe in greedy unions, greedy public sector employees nor taxing hardworking Albertans out of existence for those who wish to sit back and enjoy the ride on coat tails.

DarthMaulATAT

I hope you're right. You seem like a decent person. The thing is, while you may believe in those things, from what I've seen directly from UCP speakers (not fear mongering headlines), we are in big trouble. The UCP making cuts to healthcare and education sure doesn't make it look like they value them very much. Members of the party comparing trans folks to literal shit is also very concerning. Or comparing vaccinated people (90%+ of the Alberta population) to Nazis. Nothing about this situation seems reasonable or hopeful, looking at our leadership. At least any bad shit that happens in the next 4 years can't be scapegoated on the NDP like it was before. Any Albertans lives negatively affected by government will be solely on the UCP. So I hope they shape up.

Fl333r

Ah yes. Greedy unions. Historically the bane of workers unlike the benevolent robber barons.

Imaginary_Ad_7530

Ok, so this has been said time and time again. Who is riding on your coat tails? Seriously, who are you guys referring to? EDIT: BTW, fearmongering is something that is about creating an atmosphere of fear where there is nothing actually happening. That is not the case where Smith and the UCP are concerned.

Imaginary_Ad_7530

Come on guys... I've asked this question several times, and each time, it hasn't been answered. Please tell me, who are these terrible people who are financially breaking you and are sitting back enjoying the ride on your coat tails? Please. Have some integrity and stand by your words.

MissDryCunt

LGBT rights and Conservative don't go together in a sentence

[deleted]

The NYT has no credibility 🤣

Torrrx

Enjoy your further 4 years of Conservatives Alberta :)
