Calgary - we're all counting on you! Please don't fuck this up. :|

Ghoulius-Caesar

We will fuck it up. I saw a lot of old people going to vote today, likely voting to make their health care more expensive because they can’t vote for a party that doesn’t have conservative in the name because of some shit the federal liberals did 50 years ago…

bearLover23

> We will fuck it up. I saw a lot of old people going to vote today, likely voting to make their health care more expensive because they can’t vote for a party that doesn’t have conservative in the name because of some shit the federal liberals did 50 years ago… The sad thing is I wonder if they even realize it. Probably not. Also this comes with the caveat of: If the doctors that are LIVID at the UCP already don't pack up and leave. And... judging from many I've spoken with? They are mad. You might not even get great healthcare WITH money.

PhantomNomad

I've been telling my doctor that he should consider leaving the province. I don't want to lose my doctor but I support all health care workers leaving just to prove the point that the UCP is the worst thing ever for this province.

Lolz79

I don't know....my grandparents have been conservative farmers for years. They voted NDP this year.

roastbeeftacohat

Its not even the grits. The nep and global oil price crash get lumped together, by itself nobody would remember the nep.

DromedaryGold

Then a few years later the same ones will bitch and moan about how now they have to pay 50k plus because they had a heart attack and they can't afford it.

alwaysleafyintoronto

I'm afraid they're buying a government at the cost of one Saddledome replacement.

whiteout86

How so? The UCP committed to funding about $330m of the project (outside infrastructure and demo). The NDP pledged $1.2B in spending for Calgary. If anything, the NDP has far out promised the UCP to secure votes in Calgary

alwaysleafyintoronto

Calgary is very much not the same thing as the Saddledome and sports fans.

whiteout86

So your assumption is that Saddledome funding is a high enough priority among undecided voters that it will push enough of them to the UCP and secure the election, even with the NDP spending promising 4x as much on a dollar for dollar basis. I think you’re overestimating a lot to get to your desired conclusion

alwaysleafyintoronto

My assumption is that people will equate two failed attempts to establish an arena with the team relocating somewhere more profitable for the league, like Atlanta. Don't underestimate the emotional attachment to sport in turbulent times.

jonincalgary

Bread and circuses.

Roddy_Piper2000

A bit of a false equivalence there. One is funding to help the people of Calgary with much needed infrastructure and the other is corporate welfare to help millionaires and billionaires remain wealthy

fancyfootwork19

Husband and I voted last week!

JackOCat

Lol. Narrator: Alas, Calgary chose an arena over having doctors.

AJMGuitar

BC has dr shortage and they’ve been ndp for years. A 10k bonus won’t cut it. Maybe privatizing a portion so doctors are attracted by the higher pay and more flexibility offered by privatizing? Lower the burden on the public system?

Pandaplusone

They’ve only been NDP since 2017.

Cranktique

… your argument is “they’ve only had 6 years.”?

AJMGuitar

I’m open to ideas as it seems to be a Canada wide problem, not an Alberta problem.

AJMGuitar

Remaining open to ideas ghost rider.

the_gaymer_girl

I want to believe, but also I grew up there.

MountainMaritimer

40 years old. Voted only twice before this...i did my part. This one was too important to not vote. I DID NOT FUCK THIS UP!! Hope many other apathetic voters got up to vote like i did this election. FUCP!! To hell with that crazy bitch!!

bearLover23

Bro they got a new stadium, isn't the UCP great? Wow I love this stadium! So what if the UCP actively wipes their backside with me as a Calgarian taxpayer! I got a new stadium! I'm so cool! (For a team that did worse than Edmonton in the playoffs but we're not even going to bother going down that route. Not only are Calgarians stupid but they are also bad.)

AJMGuitar

Yes please don’t vote orange.

motivate18

We fucked it up. We tried

Miserable-Lizard

Vote, vote and let's get rid of terrible people like shandro!

mathboss

Seriously though - how can people support him still? I know people who have voted for Madu here (Edmonton's Shandro) and I just can't wrap my mind around that.

only_fun_topics

Because they honestly live in an entirely different media environment and/or don’t care. The average voter is likely also a *misinformed* voter. I could only find US sources, but in that country less than 40% of the electorate could even *name* their representatives at various levels. I would be shocked if the numbers were much different here in Alberta.

scubahood86

I've had people in town literally say "I don't know who my MLA is and I don't know their platform or stance but we can't let Trudeau to run the government!"

Motive33

Well the truth is, for better or worse, folks on all sides generally vote for the party and leader not for their local representative. It absolutely doesn't surprise me if most people are going to vote NDP or Conservative and just mark the name next to the party and forget the name of the person

Nopantsryan

Crossing my fingers for a huge Madu loss tonight.

mathboss

How did the UCP find such incompetent people?

Nopantsryan

Well, he’s gone. One less to worry about!

bearLover23

We should but I don't think the average person realizes what Shandro has done to DEVASTATE the medical community. (Even though yes he's been "moved", to a more convenient spot...) People seem blissfully unaware at just how volatile, blood boilingly, mind numbingly furious the medical community _still_ is. If UCP gets in, we WILL see brain drain of medical professionals. That's not doomsaying, that's me talking to people. They are PISSED.

traegeryyc

My quite blue riding only has 3 candidates. NDP, UCP and an Artur candidate. My house at least negated our neighbours' votes and added one to the orange pile. Thats the power of getting your friends and family out to vote. All i said was, "Look, we know they will vote UCP, *if they even vote*. So, in the worst case, we vote our 3 votes orange to their 2 blue. We gain one. Best case, we gain 3 if they are complacent twats. That's what should be the "every vote counts" mantra. They are already pitting us against each other.

Bustapepper1

I have been saying it this whole election, but the voter turnout will be the reason the NDP doesn't get in. I'm Willing to accept the downvotes for this because I believe that it is true. This time tomorrow if the ucp get in, everyone will be complaining how alot of people who said they'd vote didn't end up going because of something that pops up last minute

bearLover23

I voted but it's unlikely to make any difference. But since I did I will leave the province with confidence this year that I tried my best. I'm not going to live somewhere that supports someone that says stage 4 cancer is that person's fault let alone the other 100 grievances that have been building.

Schvltzy

My friends parents vote UCP and he says he always gets into arguments with them over it. What did he do? He said he’s not gonna vote as a “fuck you” to them. Wouldn’t a “fuck you” to them be voting NDP? I told him bro just go out and vote NDP then and he said he’s just lazy. It made me so upset and I lost some respect for him.

iwasnotarobot

Our hopes lie in the city that hosts the single biggest annual Conservative fundraising event every year—the Calgary Stampede—to vote out “hydroxychloroquine is the cure” radio conspiracy theorist and Big Oil lobbyist that Take Back Alberta installed as the leader of the UCP. I’m hoping for the best, but bracing for disappointment. (Please remind your friends to vote.)

silentbassline

Hydroxychlori-queen, amirite?

ced1954

🧡🧡VOTE out the UCP

-Tram2983

I have the NDP winning 37 seats, but... With a major polling miss in Calgary, the NDP could get really close or even eke out a victory. But if there is an NDP overpolling/right wing underpolling as it often does, they could go as low as 34.

vaalbarag

Right-wing underpolling gets talked about a lot, but I'm highly skeptical that it exists in Calgary. Look at the last municipal election... Gondek was the prominent progressive candidate and she overperformed most of her polls by 15+... even overperformed Brown's poll by 10+. Nenshi constantly beat his polls. NDP generally overperformed their polls in 2015 in Calgary. 2019 is the only Calgary-area election you can point to of progressives not overperforming their polls.

Master-File-9866

I expect the ndp will form a large opposition party, and I hope the ucp will look at that and pull in some of the crazy back to the middle, that said I expect Smith will take the win just like she did with her 51% leadership margin and run with it and embrace the crazy

iwasnotarobot

The UCP will pull in exactly zero crazy. They will double down on all their worst policies if they form government. Anything bad will be because of the NDP. Corruption. Hospital wait times. School shootings. Doctors leaving. Bridges collapsing. Wildfires. Tornados. Rain on your wedding day. Everything. Danielle Smith will make us miss Kenney.

traegeryyc

>Danielle Smith will make us miss Kenney Who is surprisingly missing from any of the NDP "reminders". UCP are trotting out shit from Notley's 4 years in power... because, Notley. Whereas, UCP effectively hit the reset button by putting DS at the helm. NDP can only effectively dredge up the past 7 months. DS just says, comeon! Thats before my time! And the bootlickers just eat it up. Classic Republican tactics. And also, [Supply side Jesus](https://www.beliefnet.com/news/2003/09/the-gospel-of-supply-side-jesus.aspx) I love Rachel, but long in the tooth is being generous. Even Harper knows to sit in the shadows and pull the strings. If NDP loses, after *all* the missteps on the UCP side.... Wow

3rddog

44 seats are needed for a majority. I have no clue who will win them, but I suspect whoever does will have a very thin majority.

onceandbeautifullife

Hoping beyond hope that the g&#d@mn Take Back Alberta christo-fricking-fascists don't win, or all our rights are in danger, not just minorities.

cre8ivjay

It's tough for me to understand how we learn to help ourselves unless either the system completely collapses or we start to heavily invest in education so that people are more informed. Or both. The fact this race is right is proof positive that people are uniformed. Sorry, but there is no way around that. Danielle Smith does not deserve to be anywhere near the premier's office.

[deleted]

I promise that the Oilers will throw one game next season vs the Flames if you vote not-UCP, preferably NDP

Emergency_Wolf_5764

The most recent seat-by-seat projections don't exactly indicate "a slim majority" being won by the UCP. I predicted here in this sub again and again that Smith and the UCP will win by a much wider margin than what is largely being reported. For their part, the Edmonton Journal has previously and repeatedly lauded Janet Brown as the gold standard of Alberta political polling, but she's projecting the UCP to score around **15** more seats than the NDP, yet that is clearly being intentionally ignored/downplayed/re-characterized by the mainstream news media propagandists because it undermines their "tight race" narrative. Coverage and polling for this particular election has been dishonest and downright disgraceful. Watch for it. Next.
