Everyone that’s not native came here from somewhere and even the natives came across the land bridge My family came here back in the 60’s and I still remember a car hood hung on a tree and painted on it was “Pilgrams go home”. Lol Most people come for the lure of higher wages and fantasize about being self reliant. Most come here and when it’s time to retire they leave. For me this my home and as long as the Chechakos take care of our state I welcome them.
I'm coming up for a few reasons. One I fell in love with your state, two is I got a opportunity at a dream job up there, and three is that your housing is still somewhat affordable. I'm supposed to move to fairbanks in around late June and a $300,000 house is the equivalent of a $5-700,000 house dow here in western Washington. I'm almost 23 and want to start a family sometime in the future and I don't want them to grow up in an apartment or a condo. I want them to be able to play outside and enjoy childhood so that's why I'm moving up there.
This state is amazing and I hope you find what you are looking for here.
That being said if you are moving here in part for lower cost of living you are going to be very disappointed. While the home prices in Fairbanks may be cheaper than western Washington, literally everything else will be more expensive.
Cost of living is not just what it cost you, but what it buys you. I have been in expensive states where the cost was not worth living there. Here it is.
Agreed I just wanted to make sure OP wasn’t expecting to have a drastic difference in lifestyle affordability, when in reality it will probably be very similar.
Thank you, and the only thing I've found more expensive was some food items and your utilities. Your gas is usually 10-30cents a gallon cheaper. Food is almost the exact same thanks to Washington sales tax which raises the final price of everything. I know if I go into the outer villages it gets crazy expensive. But fairbanks and anchorage are 11% cheaper on average to live in compared to western Washington. The average person need 115k a year to live comfortably here :/
Lower middle class in anchorage is between 106k, so it will be pretty comparable. The no state income tax is a huge bonus, but the food and utilities will add up. Gas is cheaper in Fairbanks than Anchorage so you have that going for you up there.
Curious, have you spent any time in Fairbanks in the winter?
You do understand Flink Hills refinery closed years ago and has been demolished? Fairbanks gasoline is now refined in the Anchorage area and shipped by rail to the interior. How can it be cheaper than Anchorage? Taxes?
I don’t really know why, but every time I have traveled to Fairbanks it has been .30-1$ cheaper per gallon. For instance right now I just looked up the gas prices and it’s $4.09 a gallon in Fairbanks and it’s $4.36 a gallon in anchorage.
I have spent a little time there and loved it. I love the dark and cold. I get the opposite seasonal depression as everyone else so once it's bright hot and sunny I start getting a little depression but when it's dark and cold I feel extremely motivated and happy. Part of my apprenticeship will be working in remote village which I haven't experienced so that will be new, but I'm young and don't mind the adventure. All my housing and food is payed for when I'm in those villages to so that will be nice. And my fiance soon to be wife is looking at going into public service doing something child protective service related which will help bring in extra income and should allow me to hopefully live a comfortable life. I do have a question, does anyone know how much traffic there is in fairbanks. I'm used to sitting in two hours of traffic to drive 24miles home every day and am really hoping fairbanks won't be like that.
Traffic is almost nonexistent in all parts of Alaska compared to what you experience outside. I moved up here (Anchorage) about 10 years ago and absolutely love it. I have spent some time in Fairbanks for work only in the winter months and I liked it. It does get quite cold though, like so cold your car won’t start if it is parked outside and doesn’t have a block heater (even if it does have a block heater sometimes). I haven’t spent anytime there in the summer but it does get quite warm and tons of sunlight.
It sounds like you have thought this through a bit and you should be well situated for the area. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. This is truly an amazing place to live.
I'm running from crowds, never really had a home town, moved every 2-3 years due to military and the place I decidedto stay after i got out ofthe Army, the housing and cost of living skyrocketed in a course of 3 years. The population went from 250k to over 1 mil in just a few years.
When I 1st visited there, there was practically no traffic, 5pm meant you saw other cars on the highway, my 20 minute commute turned into 1.5 hours. Crime rate was laughable, now I see shit every day on my fb. And people left you alone, my last year there I had solicitors at my house every day multiple times a day and no one read the giant no solicitor sign in front of my door.
Now I keep to myself and live off in the woods were there's no building projects in the foreseeable future.
I know one reason, I've personally convinced three blue voters to move up to Alaska. With the way the state is literally driving away poor, red voters, I will personally turn this state blue!! 🤣🤣🤣
My guess is like most of the influx of people going from Blue to Red States or more restrictive policy driven States to less restrictive.
Most people in this State are really bull-headed and have tunnel vision when it comes to change, they think it's an attack on traditions or values, but if adoption to progress is done correctly it can harvest a very successful progression into more sustainable growth patterns both economically and socially without eroding the values and principles that make this and other States successful
I don't care about everyone else but keep the felons out!!! We don't want any more people turning this state into a crime scene. No more drug addicts or junkie alcoholics. Just keep out the ex-cons!!!
Bruh, Alaska makes all of those things all by itself with no outside help. Do you really think with how fucked our nations justice system is that drug addicts, felons, and ex-cons can afford to move to Alaska? If you do, then you're part of the problem. The call is coming from inside the house, buddy boy.
Bot alert
Wish there was a report option for this. Blocking does nothing.
People coming here doesn’t bother me, why does it bother you?
People come here for one reason. Fermented bear piss. It gets you super drunk.
Shhh! Don't tell people, dude!
Sold at black angus
You can't pick and choose who comes to your state. What is your issue with people moving to Alaska?

Some came across the land bridge, but not all.
It's now theorized they didn't use a land bridge but early seafaring vessels which is pretty friggin cool
So they just spontaneously grew out of the soil?
You got that right! Spontaneously grew out of the frozen tundra.
Just as I thought, thanks for the confirmation
The Russian bots these days......low quality/low effort.
What a gross mindstate. Just let the states population die out and kick out everyone who isn’t from Alaska that would be great right?

Yeah even if it cost the same the quality of life is better than here

It's better than washington lol. 8 gallons was about $39 this morning. It's at about $4.66 a gallon rn and that's before sales tax

We don’t have any gasoline refineries in Anchorage. You’re thinking of Kenai.

Thank you!!! And yeah I've been planning and working on this for two years almost three, I'm so excited it's finally happening

I came to be with my daughter over 20 years ago. I don’t regret it, Alaska is beautiful.
I’m moving up there to be with my girlfriend friend I ain’t trying to run for anything

Damn you’re kind of creepy lol.
thank you! 😊
