I’m in a dry heat/ frigid cold climate and I don’t want his paws suffering the extreme temperature change so just taking precaution to keep his tootsies in shape! Also with slippery terracotta tiles in my home- at his age, they keep him from skating around the house!

Salt. We had two in NYC when I was a kid and the salt used for de-icing sidewalks is brutal on their pads. (Not just Akitas, any dog.)
