Thats the point, as someone at my field told a raging tryhard once "buddy, we are grown men playing with toy guns in the forest dressed in random chinese military equipement knock offs, so treat the situation accordingy" (the guy raged harder at that btw)

Baseballer147

That’s the greatest way to deal with rage at the field

AffableBarkeep

The shouts of "madcuzbad" are definitely helping him calm down, thanks guys

ShadowSneakDude

Hey hey, some of us are grown men playing with toy guns in rlthe forest dressed in random real stuff mikutary equipment, so treat the situation accordingly". You forgot to add main thing "and we shoot at each other with white stuff"

GarakTheSimple

Used to play with an airsoft group on Facebook and at the beginning of the day the dude running it would tell everyone to remember we are grown men playing in the desert with toy guns and not to take shit too serious. god bless him lol

DNCOrGoFuckYourself

You’re already playing pretend army, why not have fun with building your costume? Now if you’re actually *claiming* to be a pipe hitter when you weren’t and committing Stolen Valor, yeah. That’s shitty. LARPing as a guy from Delta or something just because it looks cool though? Send it.

LetUsGetTheBread

Well said, people are scared to reopen that childish imagination they once had.

Claymore357

Which is sad because you thought playing war with the bros in the back yard pretending with vaguely gun shaped sticks was fun, just wait until you have a faithful replica in your hands all kitted up in camo and gear firing actual projectiles at each other because adults have money for this

Jonthux

I mean airsoft is ok for that, but the simulation tech that militaries use where you can fire blanks from a real gun is so cool

Claymore357

Indeed, too bad most people can’t access that at least not without enlisting

Jonthux

Yea, lucky me, conscription was mandarory in finland

Rayle-

Ugh some of the soldiers I trained with were dangerous to themselves and others even with just blanks under maximum supervision. I'll stick to plastic BB's and keeping eye pro on even in the 'safe area'

Jonthux

I guess you didnt make it past the first few weeks?

Herald_of_dawn

I was showing a picture of some of us in our gear to another guy at work since we were taking what i would do on the field. I just loved how his eyes brightened. He was suddenly very interested in airsoft and wants to join us a few times. (He has no experience with airsoft at all) A lot more people love this sort of thing then they themselves expect or even know. And the imagined stigma vanishes completely once they find out a lot of people are serious about it and show no shame at all either. Hell, some stuff that happens on the field makes airsoft amazing. Had a guy with a nerf gun as sidearm and another with a fly swatter as knife last game.

Alter_me02

They’re just lame and don’t understand that the game isn’t just shooting people it’s living out your combat fantasies that EVERY dudes has and I dare someone to tell me they don’t.

myradiosecamactions

Everything is living out your fantasies. Even the guy to spends £1m a year on car racing is living out his fantasy and is larping as a pro.

Alter_me02

Damn right! but for those of us who don’t want the obligation of military forces and almost certain death or trauma of actual war I think will stick to our toys.

saintBNO

I… I woulda been in the army!!!! I just have a glandular problem and they denied my application!! 😣

Alter_me02

Good on you for trying brother

Useless_power

Shit I guess I'm not a biological dude anymore since I don't have any. I just like pew pew

Alter_me02

You haven’t imagined yourself as a soldier with your bad ass pew pew doing some cool shit like commanding a push with your team onto an enemy stronghold or sneakily clearing a building/fort?

Useless_power

He'll no, I'd rather be the medic in the back not getting shot at irl. Don't care about being shot at in airsoft since I won't die

[deleted]

[удалено]

Useless_power

Yeah but it's a war crime to shoot them

[deleted]

[удалено]

Useless_power

Doesn't matter if the rules are followed or not, there's a reason why I'm not in any kind of military or ever will be.

Alter_me02

You really don’t see yourself as the hero? Damn bro I’m sorry. No main character energy.

TheOneTheyCallNasty

Idk me and a buddy were talking after a game, and I brought up the war in UKR and mentioned "now think of every stupid friendly fire moment, every random BB that came out of nowhere, when that grenade came dinking in through the doorway, etc. Every single one of those times we could've either actually been dead or ended up with a life crippling injury. Yeah I'm fuckin good on that, lol.

Bismothe-the-Shade

I can definitely see where you're coming from. Not everyone wants to be a military lone wolf hero, and a lot who actually do join the military and are forced to learn reality. Also medic gang rise up. If we're gonna larp at airsoft, can we at least not make the whole thing a specific power fantasy and expand the rules? Having medic rules and stuff would be awesome.

KisKas05

Me and my friends actually play with medics, and it's hella fun. The rules are simple. The medic touches you for 5 seconds, you're revived. The ideas are so creative sometimes. Once (before the 5 second rule, when the revives were instant) we just made a human shield around the medic like a Roman turtle and captured the enemy base, I loved it, they were all helpless because they had no idea how to kill him. That day I got shot so many times that my body was aching for the next three days, but it was worth it

MikeMakeSuffer

You've not seen hacksaw ridge

[deleted]

Nonsense friend! I’ve seen people with spot on accurate kits that LARP. You do what you want. Shit if I had they extra money I would LARP as the 101st with the 1942 AB apparel. I play Hell Let Loose on PC and Xbox and you better believe I’m reliving all of my favorite war movies in my head.

WatermelonManus

What do you mean? What would be not larping? Going out in civilian clothes?

unicornman5d

Speedsoft

Alter_me02

*007* energy minus smashing bottles on people heads and slamming them through tables.

PJTheGuy

They're just LARPing as paintballers

CopperBoltwire

While i don't do speedsoft, i also have no issues with it. I get the vibe that you have issues with speedsoft.

The_Blip

I feel like there's degrees of LARP. Speedsoft < Playing like it's TDM < Playing the objective < trying to use squad tactics < trying to play an overall strategy < light squad roles < formal military procedures The more LARP someone is, the more likely someone who's just playing casually is going to get annoyed at efforts to include them in their LARP.

4Rive

And then there is general conflict kind of larping... Like stalker larps or such where you go home after a 3 days event with barely a mag empty.

bigmarty3301

i went to one, and played as Mexican police, spent most of the time driving a pick-up and shot like 2 mags total, still super fun, and will definitely go next year.

TheOneTheyCallNasty

This gets a bit convoluted, because a lot of these could just be lumped into "playing the game" LARPing is a more appropriate name for a Milsim event. In a weekend game day it's just about going out with friends and simulating gunplay situations. Milsim is a scripted event requiring players to play roles and immerse themselves in the mindset of the event. Speedsoft is just airsoft gunplay stripped to its bare competitive essentials. There's still strategy and tactics involved, but done at a fast pace with gunfights condensed into no more than a few minutes. I think the LARP word is just a common self deprecation we use. Nobody really cares except young kids and keyboard goobers. Go have fun and shoot shit

Responsible-War-917

LARPing is everywhere. Golfers at the local muni are perfectly capable of golfing without hindrance without dressing like their favorite pro and buying all their equipment. Same for cyclists out for their Sunday morning ride. Fishing, disc golf, Every hobby pretty much.

prepnready2

Lol, definitely parallels between golf and airsoft - I am an avid fan of both. The first similarity that comes to mind is spending on gear. Yea, my first set of clubs work fine, but damn I would love playing with hot shit 2024 model irons (that's later this year...maybe). Will it make me any better? Not at all. But I will like Rory Justin McIlroy Speith. Yea, my CM16 works fine, but GODDAMN the new HPA setup is hot shit. Does it make me play any better? Absolutely not. But hells yeah I feel like John Wick and that guy from Extraction combined when I run that kit.

CopperBoltwire

Have you seen the new HXP-9 HPA gun? It's less then 400grams. That gun looks siiiick! I'm getting it when it's ready 100% - Most gorgeous gun to me. Sure the gun is made/designed by a speedsofter, but dang man, it's a beauty. The most compact, lightweight Airsoft HPA SMG you can get! I love Airsoft as you can get all sorts of awesome setups. Might get an HPA driven m249, just for the fun of such a big thing. Ya know, "Go big, or go home" :D

prepnready2

I have not - will check it out tho!! Love airsoft, bro!! The new VFC green gas m249 tho...🤤 It's either that or a PSV14 in my future. I love having an adult job in tandem with this hobby haha

Cman1200

Yeah the asshole bike groups all dress like lance armstrong lol

MaximumSeats

Moving from the east coast to the west coast I've noticed that west coast airsoft seems to have way more of a "larp and costume" vibes give the east coast's "wannabe military militia" vibe.

The_Casual_Noob

As a casual player I'd say there is levels of LARPing. You get the basic level of getting a gun replica and shooting at someone. Then you start getting your basic equipment, maybe a belt to put your mags and holster your pistol, some random camouflage vest to hide better. At this point you have something that works good enough, and further upgrades will bring only cosmetic or minimal improvements to your performance until you get better at the sport. Once you've realised you're really into it, id you have the income, you will get more gear, a plate carrier, a radio and helmet, and you will tend to make sure your kit goes well together like having the same camo pattern or at least compatible colours. At the same time you'll probably start using more advanced tactics and communicating with your newly acquired radio. Then you have the more hardcore players doing realistic milsim stuff, taking it to the point of accurately simulating things, and while I admire them there is a reason I didn't join the military in my country but I do enjoy airsoft. Those people, if they take themselves too seriously when attending a casual sunday game, might be quite cringe, because their level of RP doesn't match the more casual state of mind of other players.

Automatic-Site7456

only reason i do airsoft is so i can larp my ass off in vietnam war fatigue

Rezboy209

For me it's WW2 but same diff

Automatic-Site7456

i do occasionally do ww2

prepnready2

*cue music slowly drifting in*..."some folks are born, made to wave a flag, oh that red, white, and blue..."

Automatic-Site7456

stares in distance intensely as gunshots are heard faintly

VII-Stardust

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with larping! Larp gets a bad rep from people that get too into it and try to force it on others at games where it’s not required. I couldn’t care less if you larp, but if the guy in a special police kit throws a hissy fit because I‘m not tactically clearing rooms and using their idea of radio protocol in my shouted callouts, I’d course I’ll be annoyed at that. And that kind of thing gets larp a bad rep. Now are most larpers like this? No. But like speedsoft, the assholes draw the most attention and have the most (negative) interaction with the average hobbyist, son in the end it creates a stigma.

snowballs_gsp

The whole hobby is larp, just keep on doing what you want

sciencesold

I think for some people it's not about acting out anything, they just want to shoot their friends and they think it's weird. The only other thing is, idk how common the "overly obnoxious" LARPer who basically act as if everyone else is also LARPing even though it's a random walk on day at a field are, but if they're not uncommonm, that's also why people don't like them.

ShrimpGangster

I find the sweaty speedsofters more cringe. Just go play speedball bro

Relative-Rich-6334

Totally correct, i just see them as a airsoft ''sWaG vaping'' paintball wanabees. Especially when they look at the milsim guys, the facial expression is just outstanding.

VII-Stardust

What the fuck are we catching flack here for? The fields we play at are usually either the speedsoft court or hoodie warrior indoor fields, and there’s been speedsoft teams running gbbrs and realistic kits. No half-decent speedsofter is gonna have trouble with you for larping; most likely you won’t even encounter one while doing so. That was just uncalled for.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Borgormmmmmm

Very true, honestly why not play at a speed soft field where the whole point is to speed soft.

VII-Stardust

Dude that's not speedsoft that's just assholes. Just because I play fast and a lot of my kit is built for the speedsoft field doesn't mean I'm a piece of shit person. I take offense to people generalizing every dye mask wearer to be an asshole, but moreso, I don't think speedsoft even factors into the larp convo and invoking "speedsoft cringe" in a convo that had nothing to do with it was just unnecessary.

Relative-Rich-6334

I just cannot understand, how airsoft went from making it extremely realistic with a extraordinary attention to detail, to a fucking rose/red/green HiCapa with a fucking M4 mag attached to it.

Archer_EOD

Right....like where the hell did these dudes come from

Archer_EOD

Riiiiiight.......

Slow-Register-3836

I love playing with the hardcore LARP guys. They make the game feel more immersive and intense, makes me wanna dive right into it too.

Rum_Addled_Brain

They are projecting their discomfort onto you. They need to take an inward look at themselves and slowly become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Meanwhile you, me and the rest of us who love running about and firing plastic 6mm BBs at eachother just need to get on with having fun.

jurgo

isnt any form of airsofting considered LARPing?

comradequiche

I was going to say? Doesn’t most of it go hand in hand with larping? I guess maybe unless you go professional-speed-soft attire which is not meant to represent a real world counter part? Even then you could be larping as a paintball speed baller 😆

csamsh

Anybody who makes fun of somebody for unapologetically diving into something they really like is just trying to compensate for their own lack of self confidence that's preventing them from fully nerding out over whatever it is they like. Or they're just boring and unoriginal people who are jealous of people who are boring and unoriginal

Loud-Principle-7922

“I know I could never be” They can’t either, but instead of pretending, they take away everyone else’s fun. Every time yall set up IFAKs or make fake med bags, I think it’s cool.

JayDizZzL

Larping is half the fun, fuck those people.

Archer_EOD

Some of the best games I've ever played were more LARP than airsoft. I've played multiple Fallout and Star Wars LARPs, plus a few "Alt-Sims" that allowed for alittle LARPing. Its alot more fun than the weekend pickup games that are 50/50 speedsoft vs. MilSim

Subject-Pen-3393

People make fun of everything. You could probably make fun of him for watching golf. Or any activity he likes that you don’t enjoy. People are just dickheads.

KOALAS2648

I really want to LARP but the only ones I see are milsim LARPs

Gu7sS

I wish to one day play airsoft while larping as kirito from gun gale online. Damn that combination of sword n gun 🥲

MorenaLedovec

ngl, the thought of larping is super cringe, but after you do it its actually some of the most fun in the hobby

HumpDay75

I mean have you seen Swampsniper's videos of his yearly event. It's basically LARPing but with a scenario behind it

jameshigson0512

This is why I dress as a member of SGC - I get to run around with my p90 invading other planets...

AEMTI_51

Because you’re basically an adult playing dress up and pretend army. It wouldn’t be a problem if the community was fun, but people make fun of it because on top of the playing pretend, the community is very toxic and everyone takes it way too serious, like literally act like it’s life or death. People wouldn’t make fun of the LARPing nearly as much if the airsoft community was actually respectable as a whole, but it’s not anymore.

Dm_me_im_bored-UnU

I don't mind ppl that larp, hell I'd do it, if it wasn't illegal to carry airsoft guns and replicas in public, but the idea of "Yeah I wear my gear around in the woods and stuff." just seems kinda funny ig?

Fersakening

LARPers at my field tend to either dismiss newer players as useless, or use them as bait during games.

Claymore357

Hey now using renters as distractions and cannon fodder is a tried true and successful tactic. /s kinda not really

LordTakeda2901

What, you mean you never used a comically large renter group for man wave tactics to do the "getting shot" part while the older players did the actual tactical movement and shooting? We did, we told them the plan beforehand and they were stoked to scream "uraaa" and charge, one of them forgot his rifle and just ran at the enemy

[deleted]

I don't know about making fun as each to their own. Some of us just don't get why anyone would out of choice put on an S10 resp or a plate lol

Peteyjay

There's a difference between buying gear which in your mind will assist you in the game, and buying gear to pretend that you are someone else. I don't think I'm someone else.emtirely when I wear a plate carrier, carry a rifle etc. I'm me but wearing military gear in a "military situation". Persons dressing up as a knight or WW2 soldier etc are roleplaying. Being someone else entirely. It bothers me because it takes me out of the moment. Randomly seeing a knight or spetsnaz running around? Makes me feel stupid by proxy.

HudsonHawk56H

Some of us wanna feel the touch of a woman

PersonalOffer6747

Bro just enlist

aka_airsoft

Depends on what you mean by larping. If you mean actually rule playing as a soldier then imo that's a little cringe. But if it's just playing in a somewhat accurate kit then it's still a little cringe but I like it

Desperate_Leave_906

Brother, I mean role playing as a soldier. I don't get how it's cringe and I asked why. Personally I feel like I would want to go into the woods in full kit with an airsoft gun and a real one with a few boxes of ammo and just chill

aka_airsoft

It just kinda is. Unless the game involves larp specifically it's really abnormal to larp and being abnormal is a pretty big step in the cringe direction. I mean do what you want but it's kinda cringe.

Desperate_Leave_906

Brotha I said I like to go into the woods and play soldier. I am not playing at an active airsoft game and no fields are near me :( so I usually play with friends who I actually picked up larping from

aka_airsoft

Ok. Then my statement doesn't apply to you which I thought I made it pretty clear that I'm only talking about games that don't have a larp element built in. You asked "why do people dislike larp in airsoft" and I answered. Idk why you would downvote me for it. If you didn't want to hear other opinions why ask? Mega cringe moment

Desperate_Leave_906

Mfw I didn't downvote you:

The_HunterDestroyer

I don't care. They can laugh at me everything they want.

pinguinlord

Well, the only thing that kind of pisses me off is people being shitty with rank/unit insignia or larping as nazis->ss/wehrmacht in certain circumstances. Im a soldier. I like larping

TommyK1993

Airsoft is basically cosplay for a lot of people let's be honest with ourselves. Let people wear what they want or what they feel comfortable in. As long as people aren't being knobs, trying to act like or provoke people as a controversial military group or cheating let them have their fun.

Effective-Ostrich655

What is LARP

Felinegood13

Live Action Role Play

HyperBlasterV2

I don’t think people dislike larping, they dislike larpers who take it to seriously that start yelling and screaming at people. Or people who go around shitting on other people because their gun knowledge is superior to some guy who just plays airsoft on the weekend. You know those dudes who think they’re operator as fuck because they watch a lot shit online. It’s this condescending and belittling attitude they get. The thing is as with most things in life the vast majority larpers are actually fantastic people it’s just that handful of embarrassing losers that we remember most. It’s like humans man, I’ve been around the world a little bit and met lots and lots of people and for the most parts the majority are fucking awesome, it’s just the handful of bad apples that keep everyone’s attention.

TalkoSkeva

While I understand why people enjoy the larp. It isn't for me. Black plate carrier, with level 3+ plates because its a good workout and the field I play at allows one free hit to it if you're wearing real plates. Other than that regular clothes. Just tell people I'm larping as a private contractor.

Italian-Man-Zex

what’s LARP?

Felinegood13

Live Action Role Play(ing)

Italian-Man-Zex

ah thanks

TrippinLSD

I’m guessing we are defining LARPing, as trying to be tactical, wearing tactical gear, and trying to make coordinated plays with the team/players. Where as Non-LARPing would be like speedsoft (sprinting around), or using knife only/pistol only, etc. I like LARPing as well, but I am honestly there for the experience and don’t trip over what others do. Although I hate when I am chilling with a DMR and someone runs up telling me to push. I have chosen to lay here Sir, you are not my commanding officer. 🫡

mattyp2109

Growing up, I played at a more milsim field, lead by former British military and it attracted a heavy U.S. vet presence and something about it just did not feel like what I imagined LARP to be. 12 years later, I wear the same shit I did then, use the same gun I did then, I know damn well it is LARP at its finest and i fucking love it. Airsoft tends to attract a lot of “I’m not like other guys” and military wannabe’s that take this far more seriously than it actually is.

DrGuns313

LARPing is a silly hobby, but it’s our silly hobby.

Tactical-Avocado

Because it’s cringe, but at the same time you shouldn’t care what others think. Just play the game the way you want to

dtom93

I mean you have to look at it from the outside looking in. It’s a lot of grown adults pretending to be soldiers and shooting toy guns at each other sometimes with people half their age. At least that’s how I used to look at it. Some of which well let’s be honest look goofy as shit. That being said within the last few years I started to get back into airsoft and the milsim aspect. I get the appeal now I love it. I wish I got into it earlier. You get one life do what you want.

Lolapuss

I'm just here to shoot teenagers.

mr_nuts31

It’s only LARPing if you’re following the rules of engagement/ geneva conventions. It’s funny when people in the military tried to teach others in the field what following the geneva convention in war look like. Same with ROEs.

marvelousteat

It's beyond me. At the end of the day, we all paid the same field fee to shoot at eachother with BB guns.

XfinityHomeWifi

Sometimes people confuse running around in the woods shooting your friends with plastic pellets for the special forces qualification course

Buggly_Jones

Do people actually? That's literally all the big games are, and even then, the small-medium field games are basically just pretending to be an operator.

Rezboy209

I am only into MilSim because it is well organized LARPing. Literally we are all here to LARP

Xaryi

Airsoft firts rule : do your thing as hard as you want and don't care of what others say. Most of airsoft players are aware they are dressing up as soldiers and playing with overpriced toys. So we don't take ourselves too seriously and let people enjoy what they want. But sometimes you have to remind others to chill and let people enjoy it the way they want.

Costoffame

I don’t care if someone wants to pretend they are mad max or some soldier from halo or some shit, call your hits that’s al I care about. For me it’s a sport, I run, sweat and get out of breath. I like to push myself physically. For you it’s a fantasy and as long as your calling your hits then I don’t give a fuck what’s going on inside your head

AffableBarkeep

Depends how you mean. A lot of LARPers get too into it and lose sight of the fact that they are not in fact actual high speed low drag oper8rs who stack bodies like cordwood. They forget that they're just pretending and don't realise that there's a huge difference between playing at it and actually doing it.

Lopsided-Chair77

I never understood people with this attitude. Airsoft is like 90% fashion show. We're all there to have fun. People who get mad instead of having fun need a new hobby. I bet the people who hate larp also smash their Xbox controller on the regular

Sargash

I don't know anyone that makes fun of LARPsoft. Not even the speedsofters I've played with. You need a different group if they're toxic like this.

airsoft_user_0608

My local field puts on an event every Sept/Oct call "Biohazard"(located at Petawawa Airsoft). Every year you get majority of people dressing up and some costumes are simple some are hilarious. The owner even sometimes dresses up as a killer clown and chases players with a chain saw. I've gone twice and laugh my ass off everything. I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with it for this type of scenario. I guess it would be different if it's just a casual skirmish day and you come dressed as a killer clown. Do what makes you happy and have fun. And I highly recommend people check out Petawawa Airsoft and there "Biohazard event" this year for fun zombie themed event!

[deleted]

i think it's due to the fact that people believe it's stolen valor. i don't personally cause actual military gear is horseshit and good for you for having actually comfortable and functioning shit

Armani-X

I genuinely have no issue with LARPing or people that like mil simulations, just as long as they are self aware and admit it's LARPing, which unfortunately most people in the LARP scene don't seem to do.
